ATLOURDES..
WereachedLourdesonJuly22,and Iwastransferredwiththerest,ofthe sicktothe"Asile"hospitalinthedomainoftheGrotto.Iwasinaterriblecondition,asmywoundsand soreshadnotbeenfreshlybandaged sinceIleftLiverpool.
MeanwhileaProtestantgirlfrom ,.4,-erpoolhadcometotheContinent rtaholidaytour.Shegottiredof alltheshopplacesandhappenedto cometoLourdes.Shewasatrained nurseand,seeingallthesick,sheofferedherservicestohelpinthe"Mile." HerparentsinEngland,upsetather decisiontostayas.1volunteerworker inLourdes,sentouthersistertokeep hercompany.Thesetwogirlswent downtoseetheLiverpoolpilgrims. Theyrememberedhavingseenmesittinginmywheel-chairout:id my houseathomeandtheyvolunt,eredto takecareofme.Igladlyaccepted theirkindoffer,andtheywashedand dressedmysoresandlookedafterme duringmystayinLourdes.
Ourswasalargepilgrimage,comprisingabout1,200peopleinall,includingmanypriests,headedbythelate ArchbishopKeating,ofLiverpool.We spentsixdaysinLourdes.During thattimeIwasdesperatelyill.Ihad sevetalhaemorrhagesaswellasepilepticfits.Infact,onewomantookit onherselftowritetomywife,saying thattherewasnohopeformeand thatI'dbeburiedinLourdes.
Inspiteofmycondition,however,I succeededinbeingbathedninetimes inthewaterfromtheGrottospring, andIwasbroughttothedifferentdevotionsinwhichthesickcouldjoin. OnthemorningoftheseconddayI hadabadepilepticfitasIwasbeing
wheeledtothebaths.Bloodflowed frommymouthandthe.doctorswere muchalarmed.AsIcameto,Icould hearthemsaying:"Bettertakehim backtothe'Asile'atonce."
Iprotested,saying:"No,youwon't. I'vecometobebathed,andI'mnot goingback." "You'lldieinthebath,"theytold me.
"Verywell,"Isaid."IfIdo.I'll dieinagoodplace."
Iputthebrakeonthewheeledchair byholdingthewheelwithmygood hand,theleftone,andthebrancardiers 'volunteerstretcher-bearers)hadto givein.Theybroughtmeintothe bathandbathedmeintheusualway. Ineverhadanepilepticfitafterthat.
Medicallamination.
OnJuly24,,Drs.Azurdia,Finnand Marley,whohadcomewiththepilgrimage,examinedTraynoratLourdes.Theirsignedstatementisonrecord.Ittestifiesthattheyfoundhim tobesufferingfrom:
1.Epilepsy("Weourselvessawseveralattacksduringhisjourneyto Lourdes");
2.Paralysisoftheradial,medianand ulnarnervesoftherightarw;
3.Atrophyoftheshoulderandpectoralmuscles;.
4.Atrephineopeningintheright parietalregionoftheskull:inthis opening,about2cm.5,thereisametal plateforprotection;
5.Absenceofvoluntarymovement inthelegsandlossoffeeling.
6.Lackofbodilycontrol. Weweretoleaveonthemorningof July27.TheafternoonofJuly25 came,andIseemedtobeasbadas ever.Alreadypreparationswerebeing madeforthereturnjourney.Ayoung Frenchman,FelixDouley,whousedto
cometothe"Asile"sellingrosaries, medals,etc.,cameintoourward,and thelastfewshillingsIhadIspenton litlereligioussouvenirsformywifeand children.Thenitwastimetoget readyforthebaths. Mirada.
Iwaswheeleddowntowaitmyturn. Thereweremanytobebathedandwe allwantedtobefinishedbeforethe afternoonprocessionoftheBlessed Sacrament,whichbeganat4o'clock. Myturncame,andwhenIwasinthe bath,myparalysedlegsbecameviolentlyagitated.Thebrancardiersbecamealarmedoncemore,thinkingthat wasin.anotherfit.Istruggledto getonmyfeet,feelingthatIcould easilydoso,andwonderedwhyeverybodyseemedtobeagainstme.When Iwastakenoutofthebath,Icried fromsheerweaknessandexhaustion.
Thebrancardiersthrewmyclothes onhurriedly,putmebackonthe stretcher,andrushedmedowntothe squareinfrontoftheRosaryChurch toawaittheprocession.Practically alltheothersickwerealreadylined up.Iwasthethirdlastontheoutside,totherightasyoufacethe church.
Theprocessioncamewindingitsway back,asusual,tothechurchand'at theendwalked.theArchbishOpof Rheims,carryingtheBlessedSacrament.Heblessedthetwoaheadof me,cametome,madethesignofthe crosswiththemonstrancean'dmoved ontothenext.Hehadjustpassed by,whenIrealisedthatagreatchange hadtaken'placeinme.Myright arm,whichhadbeendeadsince1915, wasviolentlyagitated.Iburstthe bandagesandblessedmyself-forthe firsttimeinyears.
IhadnosuddenpainthatIcanrecall,andcertainlyhadnovision.I simplyrealisedthatsomethingmomentoushadhappened.
Iattemptedtorisefrommystretcher,butthebrancardierswerewatchingme.IsupposeIhadabadname formyobstinacy.They.heldme downandadoctororanursegaveme ahypo.Apparentlytheythought thatIwashystericalandaboutto createascene.Immediatelyafter thefinalBenedictiontheyrushedme hackto"Asile."ItoldthemthatI could'walkandproveditbytaking sevensteps.Iwasverytiredandin pain.Theyputmebackinbedand gavemeanotherhypo.afterawhile.
(Drs.Azurdia,FinnandMarleycertifythattheyexaminedTraynoron hisreturntothe"Asile"afterthepro-
cessionoftheblessedSacrament.Apparentlythiswastoseeifhecould reallywalk,asheclaimed."Wefind thathehasrecoveredthevoluntary useofhislegs;thereflexesexist.There isintensevenouscongestionofboth feet,whichareverypainful.Thepatientcanwalkwithdifficulty.")
Theyhadmeinasmallwardonthe groundfloor.AsIwassuchatroublesomecase,theystationedbarncardiersinrelaystowatchmeandkeep mefromdoinganythingfoolish.Late thatnighttheyplacedabrancardier onguardoutsidethedooroftheward. Thereweretwoothersickmeninthe room,includingonewhowasblind.
Theeffectofthehypos.beganto wearoffduringthenight,butIhadno fullrealisationthatIwascured.I wasawakeformostofthenight.No lightswereon.
MiracleMadeManifest.
Thechimesinthebigbasilicaofthe Rosaryrangthehoursandhalf-hours asusualthroughthenight,playingthe airoftheLourdes"AveMaria."Eariy inthemorningIheardthemringing, anditseemedtomethatIfellasleep atthebeginningofthe"Ave."It Couldhavebeenamatterofonlya fewseconds.butatthelaststrokeI openedmyeyesandjumpedoutof bed.First,Ikneltonthefloortofin. ishtherosaryIhadbeensaying.Then Idashedforthedoor,pushedasidethe twobrancardiersandranoutintothe passageandtheopenair.Previously Ihadbeenwatchingthebrancardiers andplanningtoevadethem.Imay sayherethatIhadnotwalkedsince 1915,andmyweightwasdownto eightstone.
Dr.Marleywasoutsidethedonr. Whenhesawthemanoverwhomhe hadbeenwatchingduringthepilgrimage,andwhosedeathhehadexpected, pushtwobrancardiersasideandrun outoftheward,hefellbackinamazement.Outintheopennow,IrantowardstheGrotto,whichisabouttwo orthreehundredyardsfromthe "Asile."Thisstretchofgroundwas gravelledthen,notpaved,andIwas barefoot.Iranthewholewaytothe Grottowithoutgettingtheleastmark orcutonmybarefeet.Thebrancardierswererunningafterme.When theyreachedtheGrotto,thereIwas onmyknees,stillinmynightclothes, pr,yingtoOurLadyandthanking Jcr.AllIknewwasthatIshould 'hankher,andtheGrottowasthe placetodoit.ThebranCardiersstood hack.afraidtotouchme.

Thenewswasbeginningtospread, eventhoughitwasstillearlyinthe morning.AfterIhadprayedfor abouttwentyminutes,Igotup,surprisedandnotpleasedtofindacrowd ofpeoplegatheredaround,watching me.Theydrewasidetoletmepass, asIwalkedbacktowardsthe"Asile." AtthefarendofRosarySquare standsthestatueofOurLadycrowned.Mymotherhadalwaystaught methatwhenyouaskafavourfrom OurLadyorwishtoshowhersome specialveneration,youshouldmakea sacrifice.Ihadnomoneytooffer, asIhadspentmylastfewshillingson rosariesandmedalsformywifeand children.butkneelingtherebefore theBlessedMother,ImadetheonlysacrificeIcouldthinkof.Iresolved togiveupcigarettes.Allthistime, whileknowingthatIhadreceiveda greatfavourfromOurLady,Ihad noclearrecollectionofalltheillness thathadgonebefore.
BynowthehotelsofLourdeswere emptyingthemselves,andacrowdof excitedpeoplehadgatheredinfront ofthe"Asile."Icouldnotunderstandwhattheyweredoingthere,as Iwentintodress.Iputmyclothes on,inahurry,butkeptawayfrom thebed,forfearthosedoctorsand brancardierswouldtacklemeagain andtreatmeasasickmanoncemore.
Iwenttothewashroomtowashand shave.Othermenweretherebefore me.Ibadsthemallgoodmorning, butnoneofthemansweredme-they justlookedatmeinascaredway.I wonderedwhy.
Itwasstillprettyearlyinthemorningwhenapriest,FatherGray,who knewnothingaboutmycure,entered thewardwhereIwasandaskedifanybodytherecouldserveMass.IansweredthatIwouldbegladto,and wentoffandservedtheMassinthe chapelofthe"Asile."Itdidnot seemstrangetomethenthatIcould dothis,afterbeingunabletostand orwalkforeightyears.
Iwentintobreakfastinthedining roomofthe"Asile."Theothermen drewback,asiftheywereafraidof Isle.Icouldnotgraspthesituation norcouldIunderstandwhypeople werestaringatmesohard.After -breakfast,whenItriedtowalkout fromthe"Asile,"Ifoundalargecrowd outside.Theymadearushforme, andIhadtoretreat,goingintothelittleenclosure,feelingratherupset.
AMr.Cunninghamcameouttotalk tome.Icouldseethathefoundit hardtocontrolhisexcitement.
Hesaid:"Goodmorning,Jack.Are youfeelingallright?"
"Yes,Mr.Cunningham,"Ianswered. "Quiteallright.Areyoufeelingall right?"ThenIasked:"Whatareall thosepeopledoingoutside?"

Finally,afterappealstothecrowd, Igotthroughinanothercarriage, whichbroughtmeuptothehotel whereIfoundthepriest.He,too, askedmeifIwasailright.Iwas quitesurprisedbythequestion.I toldhimthatIfeltquitewell,thanks, andthatIhopehedid,too.Hebroke downandbegantocry.- -
Thatdaywasanightmareofexcitementandcrowds.Iwasthecentre ofattractionforallthepeopleinLourdes,itseemedtome.
Weleftonthenineo'clocktrain nextmorning,July27.Ifoundthat afirst-classcompartmenthadbeenset asideforme.Iprotestedagainst takingit,butIhadtogivein.
(EarlyinthemorningofJuly"27the threedoctorsexaminedTraynorbeforethepilgrimageleftLourdes.Their statementsaysthat:
1,Hecanwalkperfectly;
2.Hehasrecoveredtheuseand functionofhisrightarm;
3.Hehasrecoveredsensationinhis legs;
4.Theopeninginhisskullhasdiminishedconsiderably.Therehavebeen nomoreepilepticcrises.
AsfarasTraynorknew,themetal plateinhisskulljustdisappeared. Whenhetookoffthelastofhisbandageson,returningfromtheGrottoon themorningofJuly26.hefoundevery oneofhissoreshealed.)
ThetrainwentupthroughFrance, andIwasstillinasortofdaze.At oneofthestops,thedoorofmycompartmentopenedandtomyamazementIsawtheredskull-capofArchbishopKeating.Hecameupinto thecompartmentandIknelttoget hisblessing.Heraisedmeup,saying:"John,IthinkIshouldbegetting oorblessing."Icouldnotunderstandwhyhesaidthat.Thenheled meoverandwebothsatdownonthe bed,Lookingatme,hesaid:
"John,doyourealisehowillyou havebeenandthatyouhavebeen miraculcuislycuredbytheBlessedVirgin?"
Theneverythingcamebacktome. theii,einoryofmeyearsofillnessand thesufferingsofthejourneytoLourdesandhowillIhadbeeninLourdes itself.Ibegantocry,andtheArchbishopbegantocry,andwebothsat there,cryingliketwochildren.After alittletalkwithhimIfeltcomposed. NowIrealisedfullywhathadhappened.
ArrivingHome.
Meanwhilethenewsofthemiracle hadbeentelegraphedtotheLiverpoolpapers,butmywifehadnot heardofit.Somebodyonthetrain -FatherQuinlanorFatherMcKinley-saidtomethatIshouldsendher awire.Ididnotcaretomakeafuss inatelegram,soIjustsentherthis message:"Ambetter.Jack."
Oneofthepriestsinourparish, FatherDawber,gotthenewsfromthe papersandrusheddowntomywife, forfeartheshockmightbetoogreat forher.By-nowthetrainwasdue toarriveshortlyinLiverpool.He askedherifshehadanynewsfrom me.
"Ihadaletterfromawomanonthe pilgrimage,"sheanswered,"anditupsetmeverymuch.ItsaidthatJack wasdyingandwouldneverleave Lourdesalive.Butjustto-dayIhad atelegrArnfromhimselfsayingthathe isfeelingbetter."

Mywifewentdowntothestation withherfriend,Mrs.Reitdyk.It seemedasifallLiverpoolhadgathered there.Thepeoplehadseen-thenews ofthemiracleintheeveningpapers andhadcomedowntoseeme.There wereextrapoliceondutytohandle thecrowd,whilerailwayofficialsstood attheentrancetotheplatformto septhepeoplefromrushingthe train.
Withdifficultymywifeandher friendreachedtheplatformgate, 'whereshetoldtheofficialthatshe wasMrs.Traynorandaskedtobeallowedthrough.
"Well,"repliedtheman,"allIcan sayisthatMr.Traynormustbea Mohammedan,becausethereareseventyoreightyMrs.Traynorsonthe platformalready!"
Anyhow,heletthemthrough,and theywaitedontheplatform.Meanwhiletherailwaycompanyhaddecidedthattheonlysafethingwasto stopthetrainoutsidethestation. Theydidthis,andthentheArchbishop walkedtowardsthecrowd,nowahuge one,andaddressedit.Heaskedthe peopletobeorderlyandaskedthem topromisethatiftheyjustsawTraynorwalkdowntheplatform,they wouldhesatisfiedandwoulddisperse. Theyassuredhimthattheywould.
ButwhenIdidappearontheplatform,therewasastampede.The policehadtodrawtheirbatonsto forceapassageformywifeandmyselftoataxi.Mybrothergotablow onthesideoftheheadbeforehecould tighthiswayintothetaxiwithme.
Wedrovehome,andIcannotdescribethejoyofmywifeandchildren. Ineveracceptedapennyfromanybodyatthetimeofmycureorafter it.IcamebackfromLourdespenniless,exceptformywarpension.I haveneverpermittedanymoneyto cometomyfamilyinconnectionwith mycureorthepublicitythathasfollowedit.Nevertheless,OurLadyhas improvedmytemporalaffairs,too, andthanksbetoGodandtoher,I amnowcomfortablysituated,and mychildrenareallwellprovidedfor. Threeofthemhavebeenbornsince mycure,oneagirlwhomIhavenamedBernadette.
Thetwonon-CatholicgirlswholookedaftermewhenIcametoLourdes joinedtheChurchasaresultofmy cure.TheirfamilyathomeinLiver-
Man
poolfollowedtheirexample,andso didtheAnglicanministerofthe churchtheyhadbeenattending.I knowofanotherparsonwhowould liketofollowsuit,onlythatheisa marriedmanwithafamily.Alarge numberofconversionsinLiverpool haveresultedfromthemiracle.
IgotoLourdesnoweveryyearand workasabrancardierthere.Ihave gonetwiceandthreetimesinone season.
FinalMedicalReport,
(OnJuly7,1926,TraynorwasexaminedagainatLourdes,byDr.Vallet,presidentoftheMedicalBureau, togetherwithfiveotherdoctors.Drs. Azurdia,FinnandMarley,ofLiverpool,whohadexaminedhimbefore andafterhiscurein1923,Dr.Harrington,ofPreston,andDr.Moorkens,of Antwerp.Theyfoundnotraceof epilepsyorparalysis.Hisrightarm wascompletelyfreefromatrophy.The pectoralandshouldermuscleswere fullyrestored.Hiswristworkednormallyandhecouldusehisright hand.AsoftenhappensinLourdes cures,hehadasouveniroftheinjuries 'fromwhichhehadbeenmiraculously liberated.Therighthanddoesnot hangquitenormally;itisslightly"en grille."Therightforearmisbarely 1cm.5lessthickthantheleft.The onlytraceoftheholeinhisskullwas theslightdepressionthatcouldbe feltinthebone.)
Theofficialreportissuedbythe MedicalBureauatLourdes,onOctober2,1926,declaredthat'thisextraordinarycureisabsolutelybeyond andabovethepowersofnature."
Themoststrikingpartofthismultiplemiracleisprobablytheinstantaneouscureoftherightarm.The nerveshadbeenseveredforeight years.Foursurgicaloperationshad revealedthattheyweretrulysevered andhadfailedtoreunitethem.More thanmeresuturewouldbenecessary beforethearmcouldfeelandmove again;theshrunkennerveswould needtogothroughalongprocessof regeneration.Afeatthatexpertsurgeryhadfailedfourtimestodoanda processthatrequiresmonthsofgradualrestorationwereachievedinstantaneouslyastheBlessedSacrament wasraisedoverJohnTraynor.
Anothergroupofexpertstestified -thoughunconsciously-tothemiracle.Thesewerethedoctorsand officialsoftheBritishWarPensions Ministry.Thesegentlemen,after yearsofexamination,treatmentand inspection,certifiedthatJohnTraynor wasincurable,andtheyshowedthe strengthoftheirconvictionbyawardinghimfulldisability.pensionfor life.Theyhavenever1evokedthat decision.
Epilogue,
AsIwasabouttopublishthisaccount,newshascomethatJohnTraynordiedontheeveoftheFeastof theImmaculateConception,1943.The ,aus,eofdeathwashernia,innoway relatedtotheillnessandwoundsof whichhewascuredinLourdes.For morethantwentyyearsheliveda vigorouslife,everymomentofwhich heowedtothemiracleofJuly,1923. Formorethantwentyyearshewasa standing,stalwarttestimonytothe powerofAlmightyGodandtheefficacyoftheintercessionofMaryImmaculate.Inhisruggedpersonhe presentedatangibleargumentwith whichunbeliefcouldnotwrestlewithoutbeingoverthrown.Forsomethis miraclehasbroughtthesurrender whichisagainandavictory.Others -ithashappenedfromthebeginning andwillhappentotheend-havetakenflightfromthefacts,inonedirectionoranother.
MiraclessuchasthecureofJohn Traynorare,ofcourse,rare,while theyarereal.Theypointtheway notawide-openexitfromallphysical suffering,butrathertothespiritual recoveriesandtriumphsthatarecertaintocomefromunhesitatingfaith andachildlikeapproachtoJesus Christ,through,Mary,HisMother andours.

Inthebook,"WhoCrucifiedJesus?" byProf.SolomonZeitlin,theJewish professormaintainsthatneitherthe modernJewnorhisancestorswasresponsibleinanywaywhatsoeverfor thedeathofJesus.Hedeclaresthat Pilatealonewastoblame,putting Christtodeathasapoliticalrebel againstpaganRomanimperialism.He insiststhattheGospelssaythatthe JewsonlyrejectedJesus,anddonot accusetheJewsofHisdeath.Andhe addsthatthebeliefofChristiansthat theJewscrucifiedJesusisatragic libelagainstaninnocentpeople,which hasledto1900yearsofantagonism andmisunderstanding.Hehaswrittenhisbookinthehopethatitwill promoteabetterunderstandingbetweentheJewsandChristiansoftoday.
Whilstweareinfullsympathywith anyefforttosuppressrace-hatred, and,aboveall,anti-Jewishfeeling,'we donotthinkProfessorSolomonZeitlin'sbookwillbeagreathelp.For hisexplanationisnottrue:norwill Christianseverbepersuadedthatit istrue.ChristHimselfwarnedthe Jewishleaderspertonallythatthey wouldputHimtodeath,whenHe gavethemtheparableoftheowner

3.Specialisedfarmingdependstoo muchonbanks.Tospecialiseaman musthavealargeacreageandcostly machinery.Thisputshimintothe banks,whoingoodtimesencourage himtobuymoreland,andinbad timesrefusetohelphim.Nearly everyspecialisingfarmeristhehelplessvictimofpastoralcompaniesand banksthathaveobtainedastrangleholduponhim.Tothemhemust paytribute-Thistypeoffarmeris oftenregardedasarichsquatter,but intruthheismostlyalittlemanstrug- glingforasmallincome,withlittle ownerthipofhisproperty.Twenty percent.ofhiscostsareforinterest, a:cordingtotheRoyalCommission.
Thisinterestisforlandthatisnot worththeinflatedpricepaidforit. Thispresenttypeoffarming(specialisedfarming)isbadforthefarmer andishadalsoforthesoil.The farmerSuffersbecausewhenpricesfall hesuffersprivations;whenmarkets disappearhegoesbankrupt.Thesoil suffersbecausetheproductionofone kindofcropstarvesthesoilofhumus andcausessoilerosion.Soilneeds naturalmanures,bothanimaland vegetable.Independentfarming,on theotherhand,extractsfromtheland thefoodforone'sfamilyandonly thenconsidersfarmingformarkets.It regardsthesoilnotasasourceof wealthbutthedivinebountyoutof whichmanmaylive.
1.Itguaranteesagoodlivingindependentlyofthevicissitudesofthe outsideworld,forcomewhatmaythe familyhasfoodtoeat.Themarkets hedoesaimatarelocal'marketsnear athand.Heisindependentofworld conditionsandprices.

Theassembledprelatescouldnotbut bemovedbythepresentconditionof theVicarofChristandthestoryof hisindomitablecourageandall-embracingcharity.
