TheRomecorrespondentofthe"DagensNyheter,claimingtobethefirst newspapercorrespondentallowedto visitCastelGandolfosinceitwas bombed,saysthat18,000refugeeshad fledthere,believingthattheyhad foundasaferetreatinthePope'scasandpark.He.goeson:"Itisbest tostateinadvancethatIdonotintendtoanswertheverydelicatequestionastowhetherthebombing,which damagedeventhePapalestate,was formilitaryreasons.Whatawitness maystateisthattheactualPapalVilla wasonMarch5undamaged,whileanotherbuilding,whichhadnospecial importanceandwhichbelongstothe PontificalCongregationdePropaganda Fide,andispartofthe60ha.estate, receivedmanydirecthits.Itwas underthecollapsingruinsofthisbuildingthatmostofthe500victimswere buried.

The"OsservatoreRomano.'ofMarch 2,commentingonthepreviousday's raidinwhichVaticanpropertywas damaged,said:
"Andyet,moderntechniqueaffords effectivemeansofdetectingevenat nighttime,selectedtargetswhich shouldinanycaseneverbethedwellinghousesofpeacefulandunarmed citizens,norbuildingsconsecratedto religion,cultureorart.Moreover,the reprehensibleandtoofrequentflying overtheVaticanCityisaviolationof InternationalLaw.Yesterday'sattackcomesafteraseriesofmostgrievousincidents,whichareoccurringrepeatedlyinmanycountries,andwhich notonlydonotproduceanyresult, howeverslight,suchasmighthasten thesolutionoftheconflict,butcontributeatanincreasingratetoprovoke fearfulbewildermentanddangerousreactions,ofwhichthoseresponsiblefor theirrepeatedoccurrencewillperhaps
onedayseethelamentableconsequences."
Itisnotonlythedevelopmentof AlliedbombingpolicywhichiscausingdismayintheVatican,however.It isthegeneraldeclineofstandardsthat istobeobservedeverywhere,bothin theconductofthewarandinother fieldsoflife.Thereisespecialapprehensionaboutthe"scorchedearth" policywhichtheGermansarelikelyto pursuewhentheirgeneralretreat begins.
Anarticleentitled',ScorchedEarth" appearedinthe"OsservatoreRomano" ofJanuary15Itbeganbysaying thattheidealofpeacewhichChristianitybroughttotheworldhasalwayshadanindefatigablechampion intheCatholicChurch,whosepractical geniushasledhertoadoptamaximum andaminimumpolicy-thefirstaimingattheabolition,thesecondatthe humanisationofwar.Inantiquity, the"Osservatore"wenton,warwas entirelyruthless,notonlyinmoreremoteperiods,buteveninthecentury ofAuglistus,themostbrilliantperiod oftheRomanEmpire.Theso-called "PaxRomana"wasbasedessentially onforceandcoercion,andhadnothing incommonwiththat"PaxChristiana" whichChristianRomesubsequentlyadvocatedandwhichwasfoundedupon charityandjustice.
ThearticlethenreferredtothevariouseffortsmadeduringtheMiddle Agesbytheecclesiasticalauthorities invariouscountries,andbytheHoly Seeitself,tomitigateandreducetoa minimumtheevilsinherentinwar; anditinstancedthelargelysucc, effortsmadeduringtheninth,tenth, andeleventhcenturiestoestablish thatTruceofGodwherebybelligerents consentedtorefrainfromwaronmost daysoftheweekandduringcertain liturgicalseasons,andtorespectnot onlywomen,childrenandtheclergy, butalsootherclassesofpersonssuch asfarmers,fishermen,merchantsand thosewhoseactivitieswereregardedas essentialtothecommonwelfareSoit wasthat,inthatmedievalperiodin whichgenerosityandchivalry,egoism andcruelty,weresostrangelycombined,menneverlostsightcompletelyof
thePolarstarofChristianprinciple, andtheymadeofitagoaltowards which,inspiteofeverydeviation, theirfootstepswereforthemostpart directed.
"Butwhentheagesoffaithdeclined andthenewdayofrationalism,secularismandmaterialismdawned,allthe charitableinstitutionswhichthe Churchhaddevisedwererejected rejectedaspartofwhatwasregarded asanobsoleteobscurantism,whilehumanitymarchedonward-filledwith prideandself-confidence-towards aimswhichareto-daysodiscredited. ThemenofthenewepochweresarcasticabouttheChristianconception ofamildformofwar.Undersuch conditions,theysaid,warwouldnot haveroomtodevelopitsfullstriking power;theclevermightsometimesprevailoverthestrong,anditwasonly strengththatshouldcount.Warwas war!"
Itwasnolongerunderstoodthatthe Church'saimhadbeentobridlewar asthoughitwereafierysteed,and thiswithaviewtoitseventualabolition.Norwasitunderstoodthatthe sameendwouldotherwisebeattained notbyaroadofcivilisationandprogress,butbyoneofretrogressionand barbarity.Warwouldeventualybecomeimpossible,asaresultofitspitiless,itsruinousamplitudewherebythe wholeterritoryofanationwouldbecomethebattlefrontwhileitswhole populationwouldbeinvolvedinthe conflict.
Thus,thankstotherejectionofa "pietism"oncedenouncedas"defeatist,"wehavefoundourselvesfacedinsteadby"thenewconceptionoftotal air-warfarecarriedoutbymeansof aerialflotillas,"astheencyclopedias say;wefindourselvestreatedtodeclarationsofprinciplelikethefollowing:"Thelimitationsimposedoncertainmethodsofwarfareontheground thattheyareuncivilisedoratrocious, areduetodemagogichypocrisy"-"the distinctionsmadebetweenbelligerents andnon-belligerentsarenolongeradmissible,"

TheThanksgiving,whichwasalways madeinpublic,wasaninspiringsight. Theprayerswereusuallyrecitedby oneoftheCatholicofficersormen(the happyprivilegefallingtomyloton manyoccasions).Itwasanunforgettableexperiencetolistentothatchorus ofvoicesshoutingouttheprayersafter theirleader:"SoulofChristsanctify me BodyofChristsaveme":but moreinspiringandtouchingstillwas themomentwhentheCross,wasraised aloft.Then,alleyeswouldreston themangledformoftheircrucified God,andanoutburstofdeepfaithandtouchingloyaltyfromhundredsof voiceswouldrendtheair:"Behold,0 goodandsweetJesus,Icastmyself onmykneesinThysight."Therewas nomistakingtherealityofthefaithso proudlyexpressed.Thesincerity,the devotion,andthereverentialdemeanourofthatkneelingcrowd,nottomentiontheirobviousprideinthisoft-repeatedprofessionoffaith,didnotfail toleaveadeepimpreSsiononmany non-Catholiconlookers.Thesewerealwaysmovedbysuchmanifestationsof :devotion,andinanatmospherehallowedbythepresenceoftheBlessedSacrament,they,too,caughtsomethingof thebeautyandthesacrednessofthe occasion.Silentreverencewastheir tributetoamanifestationoffaithwhich theycouldrespect,eveniftheycould notpenetrateitssecret.
OnourtriptoNewGuinea,there wassomedifficultyinprocuringasuitableplaceforHolyMassandConfession,butourgoodAmericanfriends gladlyhandedovertheirlimitedquarters,and,beforethelittlealtarerected inthecornerofthesaloon,Australian andAmericansoldiersandsailorsknelt shouldertoshoulder,eveningbyevening,asthebigshipheavedandlurchedonher-waytothesceneofbattle.
OursojournofsolveweeksinPapua wasaproximatepreparationforthe realthing.Trainingwasintense;and sowasourchaplain'swork-evenmore intense,ifpossible,thanithadever been.Wewerehavingourfirstreal tasteofjungle,asortofpre-viewto thetryingdaysthatlayaheadwhen Mass,HolyCommunion,andtheconsolingteachingsofourfaithwereto beouronlycomfortandstrength.And ourchaplainwaspreparingusforthe ordeal.
Warfare,undertheenervatingcondi. tionsofjungleexistence,isanexperiencethatteststhestaminaofthe strongestandbravest.Ourmenare ceaselesslyfightingtwofightshereoneagainstacunningfoe,thefoxy Jap;andtheotheragainsttheinimitableterrain.Therearenottheusual incentivesinthejungletoperformsuperhumanfeatsofenduranceandcourage,nocrowdstocheerthevictor,no townsorcitiesat"Base"inwhichto relaxforatimeandforgetthetrials. Itisatotalwarwithavengeance, everydayandeverynight;arelentless warofendurance,andarelentlesswar ofnerves.Theevilvapoursofthis jungleforest,thefeverishfiresofmalariaanddengue,havesappedthetropicalsun-bronzefrommanyaface,and havedrawntheirmuscularbodiesto sinewandwhipcord.Addedtothis, thefadedgreenshirtsforeverdrenched withperspiration;slackscontinually bespattered-withmud,clammywith sweatandrain;theconstantgoing throughkunaicoveredpatcheswhere theheatisoven-likefromtheblazing sun-aheatthatrisesupfromthe groundandcausessweattostream intotheeyes,andsalttosettleonthe lips.Inthethickofthejunglethe airiscoolanddamp,butthehard trackbecomesmuddyandslippery.... silenceofdesolationishere.Itisa fantasticpicturefromaGrimm'sfairy tale andoverallhangstheper.

Insuchconditionsastheseourchaplaintoileddaybyday,bringingthe spiritualconsolationsofourholyreligiontothescatteredportionsofhis largeflock.Itwasadailysightfor ustoseehimknee-deepinmud,clothes dripping,facecoveredwithhonestperspiration,packonback,goingamongst hismenrightinthefrontline.How oftendid-weseehimsittingonalog, hearingconfessions,andbyhiswords ofencouragementupliftingmanya wearyheart Comealongwithmeto-daytoone ofourjungleMasses.Wecan'tpromiseyouverymuchinthewayofa church-notevenanativehut,formost ofthemhavebeenblastedtothe groundbyartillerybarrages.Butwhat wecanofferisthesightofabodyof Catholicmenkneeling-perhapson dryground;moreprobably,however, inmud-indeephomagetoaGodand Saviourbroughtclosertothembythe presentconditionsandbytheordeal thatlayahead.Thespotwearein, althoughnearenemylines,issecluded. Thesimplealtarerectedbythede"usedhandsofthemenconsistsoffour uprights-vinesbranchessomehow madeintoatable.Itlooksrough, andunworthy,perhaps,ofthenoble purposeforwhichitisintended.'But soonitwillbetransformedintoa Throne-theThroneoftheKingof Kings,fromwhichtheDivinePresencewillradiate,andshedlight,joy, andforgivenessonthemud-stainedsoldierswhokneelaroundit.Overhead thewidearmsofthejungletrees spreadtheirgreenshelter,givingexcellentcamouflagefromtheenemy's Zerosintheskies.Thereisdanger there,nevertheless,fromwhicheven theseeminglyimpenetrablejunglecannotprotectyou.Thewhiningof straybullets,thescreamingofshells overhead,andtheburstingofmortars comingacrossfromenemylinesarea warningthatdanger,andevendeath, arenotfardistant.
Someofthemenaresittingaround ingroups,patientlyawaitingtheirturn toqueueupforconfession.Thereis atactfuldistancebetweenthefirst maninthelineandtheplacewherea penitentsoldierisaskingforgiveness forhissin's.Onebyonetheydrop ontheirkneesuntilallare"heard."The hourforMassislongoverduesolely becauseeverymanavailshimselfof thegraceofmercifulforgiveness.No urging,noappealisneededhere.The menjustcome!Irememberone suchmorningespeciallywell.Our Masswasalreadyhalfanhouroverdue.Thelastsoldierhadjustriser fromhiskneeswhen"suddenlyaround thecornerappearedtheformofouradjutant-anexcellentCatholic-givinga gracefulexhibitionofthe"double." Itwasveryinspiringtoseethemen, immediatelyafterconfession,go straighttothealtarandkneelin thanksgivingbeforealargepictureof ourBlessedLady,whichFatheralways carriedandplacedonthealtarat lass.Howwealllovedthatpicture! OurBlessedLady'spresencefeltcloser everytimewelookeduponit,and surelyweneededhernowmorethan ever.
Nowthatallare"heard,"thebellis rangforalltoassemble.Thisbellringing-nowapartofourdailyritual -oftencausedalarmamongsttheless religiousmindedforfeartheJap,who wasamatterofyardsaway,shouldsuit ablyrespondwithhisbugleandwoodpecker'sserenade(theJapheavymachine-gun).Thepriestwalkstothe altar.ThereisnoCararamarble here-justafewsticksandboards. Butitlookspretty,foritisnotunadorned.Thewholeiscoveredbya largepieceofcreamgauze-aprizecapturefromaJapanesedumpbyFather's batman.Japanesecandles,too,are beingused.Andjungleflowersgive themakeshiftaltaradelightfulsetting.
Themenkneel,andwiththeirsweatsoiled,raincrumpledprayersbooksfollowtheHolySrcrificelinebyline. Oftentimesthewordsofthep;iestare hardlyaudiblebeneaththethunderof theartillery;butthemencontinueto pray-topraytheEternalSacrifice whichalonewillgive strength andconsolationinSuchmomentsas these.
HawoftendidIseeourchaplainsettingoutthroughthelong,lonelyjungletrailswithaheavypackonhis backtovisithiscompaniesofmen scatteredthroughthehills.Arriving inthelateafternoon,afterawearytrek ofseveralhours,hewouldvisitand collectallhismentoheartheirconfessions.ThenthewordsoftheHoly Sacrifice,accompaniedbythesayingof theRosary,wouldpenetratethedeep stillnessofthesurroundingareas.
Theseopen-airMasseswereoftenenhancedbythenaturalbeautyofthe jungleandskies.Tropicalsunsetsare verybeautiful,presentingatalltimes aperfectconflagrationofcolour.They areoneofthefewscenicattractionsin tropicallands.Onestandsand'watches themwithakindofaweandreverence.Theyhaveanincomparabledelicacyofcolour,andawriterwould seedtodiphispenintotheirveryhues todescribethem.Inwhatlovelier circumstancescouldCalvary'sSacrifice beoffered?Thedazzlingraysofthe settingsun,focusseduponthealtar, andgreetingtheSacredHostasItwas raisedforadoration,upliftedourpoor heartsandmindstotheEternalSon sowsotrulyinthehandsofthepriest. If,atthatmoment,thegreatwhite Thronehadrisenupinthemidstofit, andifthevoicethatofoldechoedon Thabor'sMountwasheardtoacclaim onceagain:"ThisisMyBelovedSon,in WhomIamwellpleased,"itwould scarcelyhavesurprisedus.Forwho

Nowfollowmethroughoneofour campaignsinthedensejungle.
ThedefeatoftheJapanesegarrison atLae,andtheirwithdrawalnorthwards,madeanotheramphibiousoperationnecessaryatFinschafenifwewere tocutofftheJapaneseretreat.Our force,inlandingintheearlyhoursof' themorning,metwithfierceopposition.Ourchaplain,wholandedwith theforwardtroops,wasamongstthe firstonthebeach,tendingtothe wounded,absolvingandanointingthe dying,givingwordsofencouragement toallaroundhim,overcomingjungle terrorsinordertobewithhisboysin thehourofdanger,andreminding themtoputtheirtrustintheirCreator-agreatsoothingagentwhen nervesarefrayedinalife-and-death struggle.
Fornineweekswithoutanyrespite myunitwasincontactwiththeJap. Hardfighting,sleepiestnights,andterrificconditionsbegantotelluponeven thehardenedsoldiers.Buttherewas alwaysthecry:"Whenareyougoing tosayMass,Father?"Andhere, again,cladinhisjunglegreens,pack onback,mud-stained,blood-stained, reekingwithhonestsweatourgood priestwouldbeseenmakinghisway totheforwardelementstosayMass. Healwayshadacheery''Hello,boys!" ashepassedthesmallgrouppartaking oftheirbullybeefandbiscuits.
OnthemainroadtoSatelberg-then anenemystrongholdnorthofFinschafen-manybraveAustraliansoldiers lieburiedinsmallcemeteries,closed outfromtherestoftheworldbydense jungle.Itwasintheseplacesthatwe hadMassonmanyoccasions.Here largecongregationsalwaysassembled toprayfortheirfallencomrades,and itwashere,too,whereforthreelong weeksdangersurroundedusonall sides,thatwesooftenthankedGodfor havinginourmidstatalltimessuch azealousandself-denyingapostle,who waseverreadytoofferuphislife's bloodthathischildrenmightnotbe wantingintheirspiritualneeds.
Duringallbattlesourchaplaintook uphispositionwiththedoctoratthe RA.P.,wherehereceivedthewounded-oftenbandagingtheirwounds-a'ssistedintheamputationofshattered limbs,buriedthedead,andborethose woundedanddyingtosaferareas.I haveseenhim;duringaragingbattle, crawlingnoiselesslyonallfours throughthethickjungle-theJaponly twenty-fiveyardsaway-togivethe lastritestosomeofhisboys.No Viaticuminsuchcases,asthehead, arm,andchestmayhavebeenblown off;butwhatremainedofthetwisted, mangledformwasabsolvedandanointedwiththeHolyOils.
Thelastphaseofourcampaignin NewGuineawasnearingcompletion
aswechasedadefeatedandstubborn enemynorthwardstowardsSio-over seventymilesfromFinschafen.This operation,likeallpreviousones,was verytrying,beingdoneonfootwith fullpack.Moreover,weoccasionally hadtomopupJappocketsofresistanceontheway.Itwasduringthis advancethatChristmasDayovertook us,andwehaltedtospendtheDayin thesmallandmuchbatteredvillageof Hubika.ButChristmasdidnotmean arestforthechaplain.ThreeMasses hadtobesaid,hundredsofconfessions tobeheard.Andsohetrudgedthe hillsfromeighto'clockinthemorning toseven-thirtyintheevening,making surethatontheBirthdayoftheSaviourofmankindnonewouldmissthe opportunityofMassandHolyCommunion.
Throughoutourstrenuouscampaign thereweretimeswhenHolyMass couldnotbecelebratedowingtothe proximityoftheenemy,theconstant sniping,andtheragingbattlesthat oftencommencedatfirstlight.On suchoccasionsourmen,takinglegitimaterisks,weretobeseeninsmall groups-whenthingsquietenedsomewhat-recitingtheRosaryinpublic. Thisgrandactofdevotionandlove forourBlessedMotherwasmainlythe workofourwell-establishedCatholic Actiongroups,whichcontinuedtodo yeomanserviceinconjunctionwith theirpriestandchaplain.Tothese greatCatholiclaymenweoweanout-
standingdebtofgratitudefortheir zealandinterestinallthingsCatholic.

OnFridaymorning,September10, 1937;Icamefacetofacewithamiracle.
Themeeting-placewasabustlingrailwaystationinFrance.Therewasno mistakingthemiracle,aswiththe weightandstrengthofsixteenstone ofburlyhumanityithelpedmetofight mywayontoacrowdedtrain.
ThenameofthemiraclewasJohn Traynor,Ifirstbeheld.himasIcame alongtheplatformwithmysuit-case andsawhimwaitingtoboardthe coachonwhichIhopedtotravel.A powerfully-builtman,aboutfivefeet teninheight,withastrong,wholesome,ruddyface,dressedinarather rumpledgreysuit,carryinghistravellingbag,hestoodoutfromthesurroundingcrowd.Twoofhislittle boyswerewithhim,andeightorten IrishandEnglishpilgrimsontheirway fromLourdes.
NowJohnTraynorwasamiraclebecause,byallthelawsofnature,he shouldnothavebeenstandingthere, heftyandhealthy.Heshouldhave been,ifaliveatall,paralysed,epileptic,amassofsores,shrunken,witha shrivelled,uselessrightarmandagapingholeinhisskull.Thatiswhat hehadbeen.Thatisthewaymedicalskillhadtoleavehim,aftermakingitsbesteffortsThatistheway medicalsciencehadcertifiedthathe mustremain.Onlyamiraclecould curehim. Amiracledid.
Itravelledwithhimforaboutten hoursonthetrainthatday,andwhen Isaidgood-byetohiminParisthat evening,itwas.withthecertaintythat Icouldneverforgethim.Hewasa delightfulcharacter,thisbigLiverpool Irishman,withhisfamiiyfaithand piety,lackingalltraceofexaggeration inonedirectionortheother;unaffectedandunassuming,yetobviouslya fearlessmilitantCatholic;withonlya primarygradeeducationbutwitha clearmindenrichedbythefaithand preservedbyagreathonestyoflife. Notforhispersonality,however,amI boundtorememberhim,butforhis story,whichhetoldmeonot.rlong journeythatday.Hetolditsimply, soberly,exactly,anarrativethatitwas agracetohearandisadutytorecall. Verified.
AfterwardsIwroteitdownandsent myversionhacktohimforchecking. Painstakingly,withtheaidofMr. JohnMurray,theoldschoolmaster whohadtaughthimasaboyinSt. Patrick'sSchool,hewentoverthe manuscript,correcting,fillingingaps, addingdetails.Ihadthefilesofthe Liverpoolnewspaperssearchedtorind thecorroborativeevidenceoftheirreports.Iobtainedcopiesofnewspaper photographstakenatthetimeofthe miracle.Ireadtheofficialreport signedbysixdoctors,fourEnglish,one FrenchandoneBelgian,andissued bytheMedicalBureauinLourdes whenmorethanthreeyearshadelapsedtoallowforcarefulexaminationof alltheevidenceandtoestablishthe permanenceofthecure.

JohnTraynorwasbornandrearedin Liverpool.HisIrishmotherdied whenhewasstillquiteyoung,buther
faith,herdevotiontoMassandHoly CommunionandhertrustintheBlessedMotherstayedwithhimasamemoryandafruitfulexample."Shawas adailyCommunicantwhenfewpeople were,"hetoldme.
IntheFirstWorldWar.
Thefirstworldwarbrokeoutin1914, andJackTraynorwasn.obilise.iwith theRoyalNavalReserve,towhichhe belonged.HewasinthenavalbrigadethattookpartintheunsuccessfulAntwerpexpeditionofOctober, 1941,andwasinthelastbattalionto retreat.Hewascarryingoneofhis officerstosafety,whenhewashitin theheadbyshrapnel.Hedidnotregain consciousnessuntilfiveweekslater, whenhewokeupafteranoperationin amarinehospitalinEngland.Ile recoveredrapidlyandwentbackinto service.In1913,lenttothe1st.Dub. linFusiliers wasamemberoftheexpeditionary forcesenttoEgyptandthe.Dardanelles.
OnApril25,1915,hetookpartinthe landingfromthesteamshipRiver ClydeatGallipoli.Hevasincharge ofthefirstboattoleavetheshipand wasoneofthefewtoreachtheshore thatday.Fromtheirpositionsinthe steepbanksabovethebeachtheTurks rakedtheClydeandtheboatswith deadlygunfire.Thecasualtieswere soheavythattheoperationwassuspendeduntilnightfall.Meanwhile,all theofficersinthelandingpartieshad beenkilled,andTraynorfoundhimself inchargeofabout100men,whotook coverinashallowtrench.ACatholicchaplain,FatherFinnwaskilledin thesecondboat,fromwhichhefell. Traynordraggedhimfromunderthe barbedwireandlaterheandhiscomradesburiedhimonshore.
Afterduskmoreofficersandmen landed,andthesmallforcebeganto tightitsway,withseverelosses,upto thesandhills.Fordaysthebitter fightingcontinued.Traynortookpart, withoutinjury,untilMay8,whenhe washitbymachine-gunfireduringa bayonetcharge.
Heseemstohavebeenliterally sprayedwithbullets.Hewaswoundedintheheadandchest,whileabullettorethroughtheinner'sideofhis upperrightarmandlodgedunderthe collar-bone.
Medicalcorpsmenbroughthimback, dazedandsuffering,tothebeach,and hewasshippedtothebasehospitalat Alexandria,Egypt.Nowbeganhis longyearsa'saninvalidandasthepatientofunsuccessfulsurgicaloperations.Awell-knownEnglishsurgeon operatedonhiminAlexandria,inan attempttosewtogetherthesevered nervesintheupperarm,whichthebulletwoundhadleftparalysedanduseless.Theattemptfailed,andsodid another,madebyanothersurgeon,on thehospitalshipthatbroughtTraynor fromAlexandriatoEngland.InSeptember,1915,intheHaslarnavalhospital,England,athirdoperationwas performedwiththesameobjectiveandthesameresult.
WhileonthehospitalshipTraynor sufferedhisfirstepilepticattack.These attacksbecamefrequent.

THEBASILICALOURDES.
Incurable.
Thesurgeoi.generalofthenavynow advisedamputationoftheparalysed arm,asthereseemedtobenohopeof everjoiningthetornandshrunken nerves.Traynorwouldnotconsent. InNovember,1916,anotherdoctor triedtosuturethenerves,bringingthe numberofunsuccessfuloperationsup 'ofor.BythistimeTraynorhad beendischargedfromtheservice,first on80percentpension,thenon100 percent.,asbeingpermanentlyand completelydisabled.liehadtospend monthsinvarioushospitalsasanepilepticpatient.InApril,1900,adoctorrealisedthattheepilepsywasprobablytheresultoftheheadwounds andoperatedontheskull.Whether bitsofshrapnelwerefoundandremovedisnotknown,butwedoknow thattheoperationleftTraynorwithan openholeaboutaninchwideinhis skull.Throughthisopeningthepulsationsofthebraincouldbeobserved. Asilverplatewasinsertedtoshield thebrain.Theepilepticconditionwas nobetteraftertheoperation.The fitswereasfrequentasthreeaday. Bothlegswerepartlyparalysed,and nearlyeveryorganinTraynor'sbody wasimpaired.
Anambulancebroughthimbackto Liverpool,wherehelivedwithhiswife andchildreninahouseonGrafton street."Wewereverypoor,"hetold me.Theministryofpensionssuppliedhimwithawheel-chair;inthis hemouldsitforhoursoutsidethe house.Hehadtobeliftedfromhis bedintothechairandbackagain.
Theyear1923-theeighthafterhe becameacasualtyinGallipoli-found himleadingthishelplessexistence.I havecountedthenamesoftendoctors throughwhosehandshehadpassedup tothen.Theresultofalltheirefforts andexaminationswastoprovethathe wascompletelyandincurablyincapacitated.Unabletostandorwalk,subjecttofrequentepilepticfits,with threeopenwounds,oneoftheminhis head,withoutthepoweroffeelingor movementinhistornandshrivelled rightarm,hewasindeedahuman wreck.Somebodyarrangedtohave himadmittedtoMossleyHillHospital forIncurablesonJuly24,1923.But bythatdateJackTraynorwastobe inLourdes.
Whatfollowsishisownnarrative,as Iwroteitdownandashecheckedit.
JohnTraynor'sNarrative.
Ihadalwayshadagreatdevotionto ourBlessedLady,havingacquiredit frommymotherespecially.Ifelt nowthatifOurLady'sshrineatLourdeswasinEngland,Iwouldgothere often,Butitseemedtobeafar-away placethatIcouldneverreach.
Inthe'monthofJuly,1923,Iwasat home,helplessasusual,whenaneighbourwomancameintothehouseand spokeofanannouncementthathad beenmadeinourparish.ALiverpool diocesanpilgrimagewasbeingorganisedforLourdes.Itwouldcostthir-
teenpoundstogo.Adownpayment ofonepoundwouldengageaplace. MywifewasoutintheyardandI calledherin.Ifoundafterwardsthat shehadalreadyheardaboutthepilgrimagebuthaddecidednottotell me,fearingthatI'dwanttogo.I toldhertogoupstairsandgetacertainboxinwhichwekeptagoldsovereign,whichmybrotherhadgiven meandwhichweweretreasuringfor somespecialemergency.Sheasked mewhatIwantedtodowithitnow. IsaidthatIwantedtogiveittoMrs. Cunningham,aneighbour,asafirst paymentonatickettoLourdes.My wifewasverydisturbed,butfinally didasItoldher,and'theneighbour wentofftomakethebookingforme.
Afewdayslater,oneofthepriests inchargeofthepilgrimagecameto seeme.Hewasupsetatthethought ofmygoingandwantedmetocancel mybooking.
"Youcannotmakethetrip,"hesaid. "Youwilldieonthewayandbring troubleandgrieftoeverybody."
MyanswerwasthatIhadmademy firstpayment,Ihadbookedmyplace andIwasgoing-toLourdes.
Aftermuchtalkinghesaid,finally: "Well,youwon'tbeallowedtotravel unlessthedoctorgiveshisapproval.If yougetamedicalcertificate,we'lltake you."Clearlyheseemedtothinkthat itwasimpossible.
Ithoughtthatmydoctorwouldapproveofthetrip,butherefused.We calledinseveraldoctorsandevery oneofthemsaidthatitwouldbe'suicide.Later,whenthegovernment ministryofpensionslearnedthatIhad gonetoLourdes,theyprotestedvery strongly.
Thepriestcameagaintovisitme andflunghimselfacrossmybed,beggingmetogiveuptheidea.Iwould not-andfinallysucceededingoing withoutanymedicalcertificate.To raisethetwelvepounds,thebalance dueonmyticket,wesoldsomeofour belongingsandmywifepawnedeven herfewbitsofjewellery.
BythistimeithadgotaroundLiverpoolthatthecrippledandparalysedex-servicemanwantedtogotoLourdes,andthepapersbegantowrite aboutit.IwasthecentreofmoreattentionthanIliked.Everybody,with theexceptionofmywifeandoneor tworelatives,toldmethatIwascrazy.
DepartureforLourdes.
ThedayforleavingLiverpoolcame. Thepilgrimsweretotravelontwo trains.Itwasaterribletasktoprepareme.Ihardlyrealisedwhatthe journeywasandIhadnothingIcould

wasaskedtosacrificestillmoreofhis time(nothisleisure)tomeethisfellowCatholicfarmersandtodiscuss thesestartlingideas.Butthepriest hadspoken.Hesaiditwasthewish oftheHolyFatherand,thoughitrockedtothefoundationshisconservatism andmostofhispreconceivedideas,the priesthadgivenaleadandthatwas godenoughforhim.Andso,infour shortyears,thetinyseedhasbecome agrowingtree,spreadingitsbranches fromRockhamptontoStreakyBay. Thisphenomenalgrowth,apartfrom theblessingofGod,isduetotheloyaltyofthemanonthelandtohis priest,butthatloyalty,wouldhave beeninvainifthepriesthadnotgiven thelead.

Inmostcountryparishout-stations wherethereisMassonceamonth,the only-sociallifeamongCatholicsisthe shorttimeafterMassthattheyaretogether.Thereshouldbeacustomof havingcommunitybreakfastatthis time.Itprovidesahitof,Catholic sociallifethat,isverywelcome,butit isveryimportantbecauseitprovides anopportunity,almosttheonlyone, forthevarioussocietiestohavetheir monthlymeeting,andtogivethepeopleandpriestachancetoconverse.
