CQDoCrinalSimilaritiesBetween CatholicandRussianChurches (CondensedfromRev.Dr.Rumble'sRadioReplies.)

'ThedeathofMetropolitanSergius, unanimouslyelectedPatriarchofthe RussianOrthodoxChurchbytheEpisopalAssemblyinMoscow,onSeptember8oflastyear,wasannouncedfrom Moscowlastweek.

Hissuccessor,Alexei,Metropolitanof LeningradandNovrogod,waselected bytheHolySynod,asincumbentPatriarchfromMay21,therebyconformingwiththetestamentofthelate PatriarchSergei.

TheHolySynod,consistingofthe PatriarchandsixMetropolitans,of whomAlexeiwasone,wasalsoelected onSeptember8,1943.ItsinaugurationwasobviouslytoassistintheefficientStatecontroloftheChurch,and thisisfurtheisuggestedbyanextract fromaletterfromMetropolitanAlexei toMarshalStalin.Initheundertakesto"workincompleteunitywith theChurchCouncilandtheHoly Synodasaguaranteeagainstmistakes andfalsesteps."

Itmayberecalledthatsomeweeks agothelateMetropolitanSergeifiguredinthenewswhenherepudiatedthe Pope'sclaimtobeVicarofChrist.

Commentingonthechallengeby MoscowMetropolitanSergeitothe Pope'spositionasVicarofChrist,the ArchbishopofYork,Dr.Garbett,declaredthattheChurchofEnglandundoubtedlywasmoreinagreement withtheRussianOrthodoxChurch thanwiththeRomanCatholic.He pointedoutthatbothrepudiatedthe Pope'sclaimtobeVicarofChrist.To thatthereplymustbethat,insofar astheRussianOrthodoxChurchrejectsthesupremacyofthePope,the ChurchofEngland,whichalsorejectsthatsupremacy,iscertainlymore inagreementwiththeRussianOrthodoxChurchthanwiththeCatholic Church.Butwhereotherdoctrines areconcerned,andalsoformsofworship,theChurchofEnglandisno nearertheRussianOrthodoxChurch thanitistotheCatholicChurch.How-

InregardtothepresentchurchsetupinMoscow,undertheleadershipof MetropolitanSergei,Russiansinexile donotrecogniseisasgenuine;butit wouldbetoomuchtocallitaCommuniststunt.Thehistoryofitisas follows:AfterthedeathoftheMoscowPatriarchTichon,in1925,noPatriarchwasimmediatelyelected.In 1927Sergius,RussianBishopofNovgorod,afternegotiationswiththeSovietGovernment,announcedthathe hadobtainedlegalauthorityforthe generalcontroloftheRussianChurch. andcondemnedalloppositiontothe SovietGovernment.Russiansinexile refusetoacknowledgehisauthority, andaresubject,sometotheMetropolitanAnastassy,exiledinSerbia;others totheMetropolitanEulogius,exiledin Paris.TheCommunistrecognitionof SergiusinMoscowisundoubtedlya concessiontothereligiousconvictions oftheRussianmasseswhichhavesurvivedalleffortstostampthemout. Butexpediencyalsodictatedthemove. Ifreligioncan'tbeexterminated,the SovietGovernmentcanseetoitthat theChurchisunderStatecontrolby havingitsownnomineeelectedPatriarchofMoscow.AndSergiushas madeitclearthathedoesn'tmindpresidingoveraState-controlledChurch.

TakenforgrantedthatMetropolitan SergeiisthegenuineheadoftheRussianChurch,wouldherecognisean AnglicanArchbishopashavingvalid orders?Theanswerisquitepossibly hewouldFromtheOrthodoxpoint ofviewthiswouldnotnecessarilybe chicanery,foraccordingtothepeculiarOrthodoxprincipleof"economy," theveryrecognitionwouldvalidateOrdersalreadyinvalid.Thisisavery involvedmatterwhichwouldtaketoo longtoexplaininfull.Needlessto say,norecognitionofAnglicanOrders byanyoftheOrthodoxChurchescarriestheleastweightwiththeCatholic Church.

Sofar,however,theRussianChurch hasnotrecognisedAnglicanOrdersat all.Butitisquitelikelytodoso,followingtheleadofothernationalChurchesprofessingtobeOrthodox.For example,AnglicanOrdershavebeen recognisedasvalidbytheOrthodox ChurchesofConstantinople,Jerusalem, Cyprus,AlexandriaandRumania.No opinionhassofarbeengivenofficially bytheOrthodoxPatriarchsofAntioch,Russia,Greece,Jugoslavia,Poland, orBulgaria.Butitistobenoted thattheapproachtotheOrthodox ChurcheswhichhaverecognisedAnglicanOrderswasmadebyHighChurch Anglicans.LowChurchAnglicans denythattheHighChurchpresentationoftheAnglicancareallyconveysthetruth,andinsistthatAnglicanismhasbeenmisrepresentedtothe OrthodoxChurches.Inanycase,no recognitionofAnglicanOrdersbyany sectionoftheOrthodoxChurchwill havetheslightestinfluenceuponthe CatholicChurch.FortheCatholic ChurchAnglicanOrderswillforever beregardedasnullandvoidfromthe viewpointofthetrueChristianpriesthoodhandeddownthroughtheages fromtheApostles.

SomethinkthattheRussianOrthodoxChurchresemblestheCatholic ChurchmorenearlythantheChurch ofEngland.Thisistrueonlyuptoa point.ByitsrepudiationofPapal Supremacy,ofcourse,theRussianOrthodoxChurchisasmuchoutsidethe CatholicChurchastheAnglican,Methodist,Baptist,oranyotherProtestantChurches.Inmanyofitsdoctrinalteachingsanddevotionalpractices,ontheotherhand,theRussian Churchbearsagreaterresemblanceto theCatholicChurchthantotheAngli canChurch,exceptperhapstotheextremelyHighChurchsectionofAnglicanismwhichhasadoptednea.lyall Catholicteachingsandpracticessave acknowledgmentofthePope'ssupreme authority.

Thereisagreaterdifferencebetween CatholicandOrthodoxteachingthan mostpeoplesuppose.Andinmany sectionsoftheOrthodoxChurchmodernismandrationalismhavebeenunderminingOrthodoxfidelitytotraditionaldogmaticteachings.Butifwe haveinmindthetraditionaldogmatic teachingsofOrthodoxy,thereisnota verygreatdifferencebetweenCatholic andOrthodoxdoctrine.Ontheother hand,thereisaverygreatdifference betweentheteachingsoftheOrthodox ChurchandthoseacceptedbythemajorityofAnglicans.Forthemajority ofAnglicansdonotbelieveintheSacrificeoftheMass;inConfession:in

Purgatoryandprayersforthedead: inthevenerationandintercessionof theVirginMary,andoftheSaints:in theuseofsa'redimages,votivecandles,andmuchelsesanctionedbythe OrthodoxChurch.

Itisquitepossible, ofcourse, that Sergeiismovedtosomeextentby diplomaticconsiderationsregardinghis friendshiptowardstheAnglican Church.ItisbyfavouroftheSoviet GovernmentthatheisPatriarchof Moscow;andoneofthefirstactsof theSynodconvokedbyhimwasto callforasecondfront.Itmay'well bethatheregardsadditionalcourtesy tothevisitingAnglicanArchbishopas aservicetoSovietinterests. But, apartfrom1.,oliticalreasorte,itmust berememberedthattheRussianOrthodoxChurchandtheAnglican Churchhaveacommonbondintheir antipathytowardsRome-abond which, ingivencircumstances, canbe moreinfluentialthantheattachment ofeitherofthoseChurchestoitsown positiveprinciples.

Immigration.

OneofthesubjectsdiscussedattherecentConferenceof EmpirePrimeMinistersinLondonwasimmigration,anditappearsthatthebroadlinesoffuturepolicyinthisregardhavebeen laiddown.Theimpossibilityofsecuringsufficientpopulation fordefenceanddevelopmentalpurposesfromthenaturalincrease ofourstockisnowgenerallyadmitted,andthequestionofimmigrationisthereforeaprimarynationalconcern.ButitisamistaketobelievethatAustraliaisregardedabroadasalandflowingwithmilkandhoney,andthatmigrantswillbepressingfor entrancetothiscountry.Europehaslargelybeenbeggaredof population,andeventothosecountrieswhichcanaffordtolose surpluspopulationthereareotherprospectsmoreinvitingthan Australia.Henceimmigrationwillneedtobeactivelyencour- agedwithsufficientinducementstoattractthetypeofimmigrant Australiamostneeds

Nobody,however,'oughttopretendthatimmigrationisa simpleandclear-cutissue.Itisacomplexmatterofgreatnationalmoment.Hence,apartaltogetherfromconsiderationsof politicalexpediencyandimperialistsentiment,extremecareshould beexercisedoverthetypeofimmigrantadmittedtoAustralia.
