Thirdly,theDawnServicehasasacramentalnote.Itemploysmaterialsymbolstoexpressspiritualthings.Thecrowdare gatheredforworship,butitisnotforworshipofthesun.Consciouslyorotherwise,theyareemployingthemostvenerablesymbolofGodwhichmaninhislossofrevealedtruthfoundthemost satisfyingandexpressive.Therisingofthesun,accompanied bythefanfareoftrumpetsandthehymnsofpraise,sympolisesthe RisenSonofRighteousnessandHisworship.Butallthisconsidered,wemaystillaskisitwisetoperpetuateapagancustom evenifitcanbemadeserviceabletoChristiantruth?Isitwise toemptychurcheswhenthegreatneedofthedayistofillthem? Theevolutionoftheideacanbestbe seeninthehistoryoftheUniversityof Paris-themotherofuniversitieswhereitbecamecustomaryforthe Pope'srepresentative-thechancellor -topassjudgmentonthefitnessof Studentstobecometeachersinthe UniversityofParisorelsewhere.Later theuniversitiesthemselves,withthe jointsupportofPapalandcivilauthority,conferreddegrees.Thecreationofthissystemofensuringthe soundnessofateacher'slearningwas
duetotheChurch'ssenseofthesanctityoftruth,andtoitsawarenessof itsrightanddutytosafeguardtruth. Forthedegreewas,andis,meantto safeguardtheunlearnedortheless learnedfromdeceptionatthehandsof thecharlatan.
Naturally,theChurchwasalways, asitisto-day,primarilyconcerned with'thepropagationofreligioustruth: butalltruthisfromGod,anditwas naturalandcongruousthatthesystemofdegreesshouldbeextendedbeyondthesphereoftheologyandof thosesubjectsthataredirectlyancilliarytoit-Thesystemstoodthe testoftime,andstillenduresinour ownday.,AsIhavesaid,itisthe grantingofdegreesthatistheessentialnoteoftheuniversityofto-day; whilethemajorityofmodernuniversitiespaynoallegiancetotheChurch, theyowetheirexistencetoher;for theyhavereceivedtheiressentialcharacteristicfromher.
Astheuniversitygrewoutofthe Church'sresponsetotheDivinemandatetoteach,sothereisto-day,and mustalwaysbe,aplacefortheChurch inuniversitylife."Goyeintothe wholeworldandpreachtheGospelto everycreature."Thesearecomprehensivewords.TheChurch'smandatetoteachextendsfromtheprimitiveinthemission-fieldtothemanof learningandscience.Itbelongsto theChurchtomotivatethescientist andscholarinthesearchfornatural truth,andtoguidetheminhisinterpretationofitsrelationtoreveal truth,andthetruthofnaturalreligion.TheChurch;sstillloyaltoher mission,andshestillfindsscholars andscientistswhogratefullyaccept herguidance-Iwillnotwearyyou withalonglistofCatholicscholars andscientists.ButIthinkitiswell llatweshouldexertourselvesto iscepintouchwiththeworkthatthe cl-tirchisdoingintheacademicfield. i.--ntlyImetayoungAmerican,a grail'ateofanAmericanCatholicuniversity.HelearntfrommewithhorrorthattherewasnoCatholicuniversityinAustralia."Youmeantotell me,"hesaid,"thatthereisnoinstitutioninAustraliawherealaymancan studyScholasticPhilosophy."

Herewasayoungman,fullycompetentinhisownsubject,Science,andat thesametimewellversedinCatholic philosophyandinalltheliterature thatsurroundstheFaith.Hownaturalitwasforhimtoseehisscienceas formingpartofawholesynthesisof truthallemanatingfromGodand findingitstrueandcompleteinterpretationintheRevelationmadebyOur Lord!Surelyweoughttotakean interestintheAmerican-Catholicuniversities.
IhaveheardthewholeAmerican systemofuniversitiesusedasatheme forabitingAmericanvisitorstoEuropeanuniversities.Playfulbanteris harmlessenoughbutsurelythiswar hasrevealedthecompetenceofthe technicianstrainedinAmericanuni-
versities?Then,too,youwillhave noticedhowitfrequentlyhappens thatAmericansgotoEuropeandcompetesuccessfullyforachairinaEuropeanuniversity,andthenelectto returntotheirowncountry.WhatevermaybethevagariesofAmerican universitylife,itisevidentthatthe systemto'whichsuchmenbelongis notunworthyofournotice.Nordo theCatholicuniversitiestakeanunworthyplaceinthatsystem.Statisticsofundergraduateattendanceare difficulttointerpret,butIthinkthe numberofauniversity'spost-graduate students-menwhoareseekingmore thanasmatteringoftheirsubjectgivessomeindicationofthestandard reachedinitscourses.Well,forthe lastfewyears,theyearlyaverageof studentsattendingpost-graduatecoursesinAmericanCatholicuniversities hasforsometimebeenjustonfour thousand,thoughIcannottellhow thewaymayhaveaffectedthisfigure. Itisevident,then,thattheCatholics ofAmericahavedone.andaredoing, muchtorestoretotheChurchher rightfulplaceinuniversitylife.
HereinAustraliawemustdoour bit;wearefarfromthetimewhen wecanhopetohaveaCatholicuniversity.Inthemeantimeweought torealisethatwehavesomethingto givetouniversitylife.TheCatholic contributiontouniversityworknaturallyincludesindependenceandclarityofthought.Auniversitywillalwaysbenefitbythepreseneeofa vigorousbodyofCatholicstudents. Theymakementhink;Ihaveseen somethingoftheeffectofvigorousCatholicthoughtonOxfordandanMelbourneUniversity,andIamsurethat theCatholicstudentsinPerthcan makealikecontributiontotheintellectuallifeoftheiruniversity.
ButIdonotwanttospeak'as thoughtheaverageCatholicstudent wasamanofgenius.Indeed,itis wellforustorememberthattheCatholicstudentis,likeanyotherman, acreaturesetonearthtoworkouthis salvation.Hisfirsteffortmustbe toserveGodandsavehissoul.He muststriveforpurityoflifeandpurityofintention.Hemustbeloyal tothepracticeoftheFaithandearnestinhisfrequentationoftheSacraments.Butheshouldrememberthat hehasreceivedtalentsfromGod.He maynotbeclever,buthisintellectual talenthasbeenprovedtobeatleast uptomatriculationstandard.He hasgottorenderanaccountofhis useofittoGod.Heaughttoremember,too,thathisdegree,hissocial position,andperhapstheextessive esteemmenhaveforsuchthings,will givehimspecialpower'sofinfluence. Infactories,offices,shops-infact, everywherewhereyouthcongregates, theenemiesofourFaithareactively employingeverymaterialartificeto lureourgirlsandboysawayfromtheir wholesomeassociations.And,though manyofusmayshrugourshoulders atthiswarning,thedangertoyoung Catholicsisveryrealindeed.
WhyThisPeril?
Becauseinmanycasesthereareno counterattractions-bywhichImean socialandsportinggatheringsarrangedbyCatholicsforCatholicsinCatholicsurroundings.
WhatfineravenueisthereforkeepingyoungCatholicsinregularcontact witheachotherthaninparishtennis clubs,andhowmanyparishesinthe Archdiocesehavetennisclubs?
,Thisiswartime,weknow,andneither materialnormanpoyerisobtainableto laycourtsandconstructclubhouses. Buthere'sasuggestion:
Ineveryparish(whetherithasa tennisclubornot)theyoungpeople couldgettogether,andwiththeguidanceandassistanceoftheparishpriest, whoseco-operationwouldbegladly andreadilygiven,organisefortheir fellowparishionersthesocialactivities that"must"beundertakeninorderto keeptheyoungpeopletogether.
Theavenuesofentertainmentare considerable:amateurtheatricalsgive everyone-participantsandaudience alike-considerableenjoyments;there areoutdoorrecreationsforsummerand winter,andthereisthenever-failing avenueofawell-conducteddance.

Oneday,whenIwaslyingstretched outonthedeckwithmyfavourite bookandbottleofJemonade(That madetheLemonadeBottleprickup hisears,anyway!)Ihappenedto glancesideways.Soaccustomedwas Itothesightoftheundulatingbillows thatforamomentIdidnotnotice whatInoticedamomentlater.
