ByLESTERLUTHER.OnAugust20,1943,IwashonorablydischargedfromtheArmyoftheUnitedStates.IhadenlistedinJune, 1942,andbeforeIwasdischargedI 'hadtospendoneyearandthreedays inArmyhospitals.Ihadseenmy shareofsufferingwithoutgoinginto combat,forIsawthosewhoreturned fromthecombatzones,Ihavenot verymuchtotell;butwhatIam goingtowritewill,Ithink,stick Withthereaderforalongtimeto come.
Whathappenedtomeisunimportant.Briefly,itstartedwithaterrific strepthroat,afterwhichcomplications setin.Finally,whenallwaswell physically,mynerveswentsmash. someoftheArmydoctor'sattributed thistothehospitalsurroundings.All ofuscanthinkofabetterplacethan ahospitalinwhichtospendoneyear ofthebestpartofourlives.

Georgeisonlyoneofhundreds,and beforetheWarisovertherewillbe manythousandsmorelikehim.

broughtbackwiththemtothelittle hillocklustoutsidethewallsofJerusalem,aquantityoffinelinenanda mixtureofmyrrhandaloes,abouta hundredpoundweightasamatterof fact,touseintheburialofChrist.But timewaspressingandtheycoulddo nomorethanhurriedlyplacethestiff, lividbodyinoneOfthelonglinen clothsorburialshroudsandcarryit overtothenewtombofJosephof Arimathea,whichhadrecentlybeen hewnoutoftherock-faceaboutforty yardsaway.Now,thestoryIwant totellyouto-nightisaboutthatsame longlinenburialsheetinwhichChrist's sacredbodywasplacedwhenitwas takendownfromthecross.The sheethasbeenpreservedfromthat daytothis,andisnowinthepossessionoftheKingofItalyandkeptin theCathedralofTurin.Itisoften referredtonowdaysastheShroudof Turin.
Itisalongpieceofveryfine,orientalmaterial,aboutfourteenfeetin lengthandaboutthreeandahalfin width.Onitcanbetracedthefigure ofaman,tallanddignifiedinappearance.Itrevealsadoublefigure,actually-thatis,thefrontandtheback ofthesameperson.Thebackshows thatHeiscompletelynaked,andboth backandfrontshow,fromheadto feet,thetracesofaterriblescourging. Youmightbewonderinghowthe sheetcametobeartheimpregsionof adoublefigure.Well,rememberitis verylongandnotverywide,The BodyofOurLordiwaslaidonone endofthesheetandtheremainderwas drawnlength-wiseoverHisheadand stretcheddownagainasfarasHis feet.Thisexplainsthedoublefigure.
Curiouslyenoughthemarkingson theShroudarewhataphotographer wouldcallnegativeimagesandnot positive.Consequentlyitwasnot untiltheadventofphotographythat themysteryoftheShroudwasbrought tothenoticeoftheworldasascientificphenomenon.ForwhentheShroud wasphotographedforthefirsttime duringanexhibitionin1898,theincrediblehappened,forthedoublefigure,

Therearevarioustheoriesastohow thesenegativemarkingscametobe madeonthelinensheet,butuptodate nosatisfactoryexplanationhasbeen offered,andtheShroudofTurinremainsascientificmystery.Certainly theammoniafumesemanatingfrom thedeath-sweatwhichcoveredthe bodyofChristasHewastakendown fromthecrossseemtohavehada largeparttoplayinmakingtheimpressionsonthelinensheet,soaked andtherefore"sensitised"withaloesas itwere.ManyofthegreatestScientistsanddoctorsinEurope,bothCatholicandnon-Catholic,havetakenup astudyoftheShroudofTurin,many simplybecauseofitsscientificinterest. Allacceptthegenuinenessoftherelic, andeventheatheistsandagnostics amongstthemareagreedthatitisthe burialsheetofamanwhohadbeen crucifiedsometwothousandyearsago intheMiddleEast,whohadbeenviciouslyscourgedfromheadtotoe,who hadbeencrownedwithsomesortof crownorcapofthorns,whohadborne someweightonhisrightshoulder.The nailshadbeendriventhroughthe wrists,notthepalmsofthehandsas generallydepicedinChristianart.One nailonlyhadbeenusedinpinningthe feettothecross,fortheleftlegwas evidentlystillalittlebentwhenthe impressionwasmadeonthesheet. Yousee,rigormortishadsetinand thevictim,ofthiscrucifixionhadapparentlybeenhurriedlyburied,the thumbsstillremaincurleduponthe palmofthehands,theleftlegwas stillbentinthepositionthatithad beenplacedovertherightleg,sothat onenailonlyneedbeusedtopinboth feetbytheinstepstothecross.On therighthandsideofthechestthere isthewoundleftbysomeinstrument suchasaspearwhichhaspiercedthe bodyofthemanbetweenthefifthand sixthribsandtransfixedtheheart. Fromtheheartthereflowsastreamof bloodmixedwithsomewateryfluidremindingus,incidentally,ofSt.John's remark,"butoneofthesoldierswith aspearopenedHisside;andimmediatelytherecameoutbloodand water."
Therearemanyotherdetailsofthe victim'spassionthatarerevealed throughastudyofthisShroudof Turin.ForChristiansgenerally,and forCatholicsinparticular,thereisno doubtbutthattheto,rncrucifiedbody thatleftthesemarkingsontnewinding sheetwastheBodyofChristHimself. Everydetailrevealed,everynewdiscoverymadeintheyearsofresearch since1898hasonlyconfirmedthetraditionalbeliefthatthisShroudisthe actualburialclothinwhichtheBody ofChristwaswrappedwhen'taken downfromthecross.Onecouldspeak foranhouratleastonallthelittle detailsofChrist'sPassionandCrucifixionthatitdoesreveal.Moreover,

theevidenceoftheShroudfullysubstantiatestheGospelaccountofthe sufferingsanddeathofChrist.LookingatthenegativeplatesofaphotographoftheShroudwehaveactually aphotographoftheBodyofChristat themomentwhenitwastakendown fromthecross,andbeforethelimbs hadbeenstraightenedandthoseburyingHimhadwipedawaytheclotted bloodandthephlegmthatthemob hadspatalloverHisfaceandbody. Yes,ithasahideousstorytotell,the ShroudofTurin,andittellsitinall itshorrifyingdetail,forthethought runsthroughyourmindthewhilethat youlookattheseimagesonthesheet. "AndHewasGodallthetime!"
ButtheimagesontheShroudmust beseentotelltheirstory.Itisuselesstotryanddescribethemoverthe airtoyou.Beforethewarbrokeout IwasinTurinandsawthesephotographicplatesofwhichIhavebeen speaking.Theyshowedthelacerated figureofChrist,life-size,inalltherealisticdetailofanactualportrait.Yet. theShroudprovidesmorethanamere portraitofOurLord,forthebloodstainsontheclothareactual-bloodstainsandnotmademerelybyvapoursemanatingfromthewoundsand THUSstainingthelinen.ThefeaturesandtheimageofChrist'sbody wereevidentlymadeinthisway,but strangelyenoughthebloodstainsare madethroughdirectcontactbetween theclothandtheactualbloodthat trickledfromthewoundsallover Christ'sbody.
Andsonootherrelicintheworldis guardedwithsomuchcare.Thelate Pope,PiusXI,referredtotheShroud ofTurinstainedthroughoutwiththe bloodofChristasperhapsthemostsacredthingintheworld,evenifitisas yetstillsurroundedwithmystery.
AndIthinkitanappropriateexampleofhoweveryinventionofman hasitspurposeinthedivineplanof ourredemptionandisutilisedbyGod withthatendinview.Forafterhavingkeptitssecretfortwothousand years,itwaslefttothemoderninventionofphotographytorevealtotwentiethcenturymanthefullsignificance oftheHolyShroudbequeathedtous byChristindeath.Millionsbefore ushavelongedtoseethesacredfeaturesoftheManwhowasGod,butthe Fatherreserveduntilourownday -thisextraordinarygiftinmemoryof HisSon.
Naturally,theworldhasnotyet beenfloodedwithphotographsofthe FaceofChristtakenfromtheShroud ofTurin,becauseafterthefirstcrude photographstakenin1898theShroud wasnotagainremovedfromitssilver casketandphotographeduntil1931. SincethenimagesofChrist'sbodyand, aboveall,ofHissacredFacetaken fromtheShroudhavefoundtheirway alloverEurope,andhaditnotbeen forthewarIamsuretheywouldnow beobtainedhereinAustraliaHowever,maybeitwillnotbelongbefore wetoomaybeabletoplaceinour homesandinourchurchesthisactual likenessofChristatthemomentwhen Hewastakendownfromthecrossand laidunwashedandun-annointedin theburialsheetthatstillbearsthese imagessomysteriouslyleftonitsfabric.Butnomancanlookonthe ShroudofTurinwithoutbeingleft aghastatthehideousness,thebrutalityandtheintensityofthePassion ofChrist,andasIsaidbefore,the thoughtwillhauntyouasitdoeseverybodyelse:thatallthiswasdonetothe LanwhowasGodHimself!

God(andHisgrace,allthingsarepossible.Andtheproofofthatisinthe numberofKingsandrulersandwealthymenandwomenwhohavebeen canonisedasSaintsbytheChurch, simplybecausetheyusedtheirwealth alwaysforthebenefitoftheirfellowman.Theydidn'tmakemoneytheir god,andeveninthemidstoftheir wealthlivedChrist-likelives which theycouldn'thavedonewithoutGod's help.

A.:Christspokethosewordsaftera richyoungmanhadaskedHimwhat

Well,thatisthefullpassagecontainingthetextyouquote,andreading Christ'swordsintheircontextalmost makesanexplanationunnecessary whenwerememberthattheJewshad anoldsayingtodescribeathingas beingverydifficult,anditwasjust that:It'seasierforacameltopass throughtheeyeofaneedlethanfor such-and-suchathingtohappen.Christ wasusingacolloquialism,andHe simplymeantthatitwasnotimpossiblebutverydifficultforarichman toenterheaven-thatis,onhisown accountandwithoutGod'shelp:that istwhyHeadded,"withmen(ontheir own)thisisimpossible,butwith

Duringthecourseofnextweek,theChurchNvillcelebratethe mysteriesofOurLord'sPassionandDeath.ThehistoricalnarrativeofthefourEvangelistsisreadduringHolyWeek,toreviveinourmindsthedetailsofthedolorouspathwhichChrist trodforthesalvationofthehumanrace.Forthemostpart,the storyofthePassionisimprintedinCatholicmindsandheartsfrom earlyinfancy,butwhatisthesignificanceoftheDeathofJesus Christ,whatitsnecessity?Itshouldberememberedthatthe answertosuchaqueryinvolvesthewholecourseofhumanhistory fromtheFallofAdamtotheendoftime.Thehistoryofthe JewsdowntothetimeoftheIncarnationderivesitsfullandchiefestsignificanceinthatitlooksforwardtoChrist.Fromthe promisemadetoAdamafterthefirstsin,thelongsuccessionof Jewishprophetsaddseachsomeline,somedetail,totheportrait oftheMessiahtocome.Thehistoryofmansincethedeathof Christisregeneratedandinspiredwithnewhopefromthemerits ofCalvary'sSacrifice.

Thepreachersaidhewouldnot speakthatnightonthegloriesofour ImmaculateMother.Hewouldnot attempttodescribeherprivilegesor theloveshebearsus,herchildren,but wouldtrytoshowhowthosesweet names,JesusandMary,linkedtogether bytheAlmightyinanunbreakable bond,wereunitcdalsobyanidentity ofinterests.Theirinterestswereinterwoven:loveofoneledtoloveof theother.Toreachtheonewemust findtheother.'OfthepartMary playedinthedivineeconomyofour Redemption,howsheresembledHim evenindeath.

HadyoulookedforHiminthestable atBethlehem,youwouldhavefound HiminMary'sarms.Hadyousought HiminHistenderboyishyears,you wouldhavefoundHimunderthesame roofasMary.DuringHispubliclife shewasneverfaraway.Howfull theGospels-Hisbiography-areof suchsentencesasthese:'Theyfound theChildwithMaryHisMother.'The MotherofJesuswasthere.'Showing sheaccompaniedHimeverywhere.She waseverbyHisside.AndinHis lastagonyshestoodbyHisCross. "SoitisintheChurchHefounded. \\-herelieis,sheisalsoTheirinterestsevenareidentical.ItisthelessonofhistorythatattacksonMary areindirectattacksonJesus,Here enemieswereHisenemies;herfriends wereHisfriends.TheheresyofNestoriusinthefifthcenturyseemeddirectedagainstMary.Inrealityit wasanattackonJesus.Becauseif theChildbornofMarywerenotaGodManandOnePersonthentheIncarnationwasrendereduseless.TheexplanationsofNestoriusseemedplausibleandevensuperficiallytoincrease thehonourduetotheGod-man,but logicallyitnullifiedtheRedemption. WhentheCouncilofEphesusdeclared anddefinedthedogmathatMarywas theMotheroftheWordmadeFlesh, MotherofGod,Mary'sprivilegemade plaintheOnePersonandthedual natureofherSon.
SoalsowhenthedogmaoftheImmaculateConceptionwasdefined.Men weredenyingtheFallandconsequentlytheneedofRedemption.SoindefiningthedogmaoftheImmaculate Conception:ThatMaryhadbeenpreservedfromoriginalsin,fromthecommontaint,theChurchtaughtand broughtintoboldreliefthefactthat therewasacommontaintandaFall, andthatoriginalsinisareality.And moreimportantstillthatChristwas ourRedeemer.
"OnceagainatthetimeofthesocalledReformationinthesixteenth
centuryevilmenrejectedMary.They saiddevotiontoherwasunnecP.Kory andevenworse.ThatshecamebetweenthemandGod.Thatthey wouldreservealltheirloveforHer S,,iiButtheyforgotwhathadhappenedHisfirstnightonearth.The lessonthentaughtmenbyGod.That inturningMaryawayfromtheirdoors, theywereturningawayherSonalso. TheinnkeeperatBethlehemonChristmasnightclosedthedoorinherface, andJesuswasnotbornunderhisroof. Thinkofwhathemissed.Posterity wouldhavepraisedhisname.Generationsofmentotheconsummation oftheworldwouldhaveenviedwith aholyenvy,wouldhavereveredthe oneprivilegedtoplayhosttotheRedeemeroftheworldonthatmomentousnight.Butno,hehadnoroom fortheVirginMother,andasaconsequencenoroomforhisGod.Men havealwaysactedthus.Theybegin byrejectingtheMother.TheyendupbyrejectingtheSon,Thatisthe lessonofhistory.InthemanysocalledChristianchurchesthathave noroomforMarythereisanever-inreusing-umberofpeoplewhoreject theDivinityofChrist.Theybegan bydenouncingtheMother,theyare endingupbyrejectingtheSon.On theotherhand,intheCatholicChurch, JesusandMaryhavebeeninseparable andunseparated.Nowhereissheso muchlovedandvenerated,andinno otherreligiousbodyistheDivinityof Christsomuchinsistedon.Itwould seemthatdevotiontotheMotherfar fromlesseningloveoftheSonhasactuallystrengthened,deepenedandperfectedit.
Protestantsaremodernimitatorsof Nestorius.Hewaswillingtoadmit thatshewastheMotherofChristas ManbutnotofChristasgod.That isthatshewastheMotherofHis humannatureonly.Protestantsare willingtoadmitthatshewasthetrue MotherofJesusregardedasaprivate individual,butnotofJesusasSaviour oftheworld.Adistinctionwithouta difference,becauseJesusexistsonlyto betheleaderofhumanityregenerated byHisBlood.Theywoulddivide Christ!ThewholelifeofJesus,birth, labours,sufferingsanddeathisaunity. Shewasnomerecasualinstrumentin themysteryoftheIncarnationtobe usedforatimeandthenleftaside.Her co-operationwithJesuswasfree,conscious,deliberate,andtherewasonly theoneChrist.
Dothosemeneverrealisewhatthey owetoMary?ThattheRedemption theynowenjoywasonlypossiblebecauseofherconsent.Faithlessthan herswouldhavefaltered,humilityless thanherwouldhavequailed,heroism lessthanherswouldhaveshrunkback fromtheacceptanceofadignityso awful,atthepriceofsuchunutterable pain.Butnotheyrefusetoseethings asGodwishesthemtobeseen.The oldfault:"Paintingthingsastheysee themfortheGodofthingsasthey are."
Thereisoneincidentrelatedinthe Gospelswhichdemonstratesprofoundlytheunionthatexistedbetween MotherandSon.Andbyablindperversenessrootedinignorance,itisthis preciseoccasionthatisselectedby Mary'santagoniststotryvainlyto
provetheopposite.Irefertothe MarriageFeastatCana.Theenemies ofMarytakeumbrageattheword "Woman,"forgettingthattheGospels werenotwritteninEnglish,butarea translationofatranslation.Textand contextprovethatthecorrecttranslationofthetermusedbyOurDivine Lordwas"Lady,"aformofaddress showingHisrespect,loveandreverenceforHisMother.AugusteNicolas,afamousFrenchApologist,said ofthismiracle:"TheEvangelistdoes notmerelypermitittoberemarked fromastudyoftheincidentthatthis wasthefirstmiracleoftheSaviour; butitbringsitpointedlyunderour notice.Andnotmerelyisitthefirst miracle,butthe'beginningofmiracles, initiumsignorum.'AstheVisitation hadbroughtthebeginningofallspiritualfavoursthroughthemediationof Mary,sothe'beginningofmiracles'inthetemporalorder-isalsodueto themediationofMary.Thus,the GospelshowsJesusnotmerelygiving HimselfthroughMaryintheIncarnation,butgivingthebeginningofall temporalonesthroughMaryatthe marriagefeastofCana-andnotmerelythis,butHeanticipatesthetimeof miracles:'Myhourisnotyetcome,' inordertomanifestHisglory.'And HisdisciplesbelievedinHim.'But iftheywereHisdisciples,musttheynotalreadyhavebelievedinHim? Whatthendothesewordsmean?
Theysignifythatthediscipleswere strengthenedinfaith,andthisconfirmationresu:tedfromthemiracleaccomplishedatMarv'sintercession. Thus,dotheScripturesinthisincidentshowMary'sinfluenceinthe r.almsofNature,Grace,andGlory."
Howunfortunateforthemthatthe adversariesofOurLadychosethis passage.Verilytheyhavebeenhoistedontheirownpetard!
"ThroughMarytoJesus,"hasbeen acharacteristicofCatholicism.In theearlycenturieswholenationswere rapidlyconvertedtotheFaith,andSt.
Cyrildidnothesitatetodeclareatthe CouncilofEphesusthatitwasby MarytheywereallwontoChrist.It was'Mary'sRosary,the"IrishMau," thatkepttheFaithaliveduringthe longnightofpersecutioninIreland. LookattheuniquepositiontheIrish andtheirdescendantsholdintheCatholicChurchintheEnglishspeaking worldofto-day.Theyareitsbackbone.AllpraisetoMary.Shekept themfaithful.Theyhavealwayslovedher,Totheirnativeintelligence itwasobviousthat:

St.FrancisXavier,thatoutstanding missionary,saidhefoundbyexperiencethatwhenhepreachedtheCross ofChristanddidnottelloftheMother whostoodbeneathit,hishearersrevoltedagainsttheGospelhehad taughtthem.

SeveraloftheclergyandChristian Brotherswerealsopresent.Theweatherwasidealandthebathspresentedacolourfulpicture,withthecolours ofthevariousschoolsandIreland's nationalemblemverymuchinevidence.Fremantleagainassertedits superiorityinthenatatorialart,winingtheaggregate,seniorandjunior cups,withHighgateaveryclosesecondintheaggregateandsenior,and Perthinthejuniordivisions.Leederville,competingforthefirsttime,performedverycreditably,gettingone firstplaceandbeingplacedinmost oftheevents.Thecarnivalwasremarkablefortheenthusiasmofthe spectators,theexcellenceofallthearrangements,andthehighstandardof theswimming.Therewere'threeState championsamongthecompetitors:H. "Booksareweapons"istheslogan publishersandlibrarieshavebeen usingtochannelourreadingintobecoming,initsway,partofthewareffort.Thephraseisverytrue,and notonlyinwartime.BooksARE weapons,butnotallweaponsarein thehandsorinthesoulsofthosewho arefightinginajustcause.Thewar iscausingtobeputintothehandsof manyanAmericanaweaponthat seems,atfirstsight,trueandserviceable,butwhichwillturnouttobea traitorousknifeintheheartofAmericanhomeandfamilylife.
TheAmericanLibraryAssociation, releasingitsannualreportgathered fromstatisticsofsome110libraries,revealsthat,amongothersignificant trendsinwartimereading,marriage manualsandhandbooksforexpectant mothersarefarmorepopularthan everbefore.Thisisdoubtlessaccountedforbywarmarriagesandthe attendanthurryandhastethatforestallsanymoreleisurely,moresound andthoroughpreparationandinstructiononthedutiesofmarriedlife.John andMaryhaveonlytwodaysbefore hisshipsails;theyhavenottime foralongtalk,oraseriesoftalks,with parents,apriestorotherreligiousadviser;theycanthinkofnothingtodo butpopintothenearestlibrary(or drug-store!)andskimthroughamarriagemanual,inpreparationforasublimeactivityandvocation.
Evenatbest,wereallthebookson thistopictotallyunexceptional;were theywrittenwiththesuffusingglowof adeepspiritualitypulsingthrough
them,theirrushedperusalwouldnot beaproperpreparation-theyshould bestudied,Butwhenwerecallwhat thevastmajorityofthemarriage manualsarelike,weshuddertohear thattheyaregettingpopularasnever before.
Fortheplain,ifdistasteful,factis thatnineoutoftenofthesebooksare absolutemoralpoison.Birthcontrol, withallitstechniquerevoltinglydetailed,istakenasamatterofcourse; thespiritualsoulofmarriageisignored, andundueinsistenceonitsphysical sidegivestheyoungcoupleatotally distortedview.
Tocounteractthisgrowingmenace tothesanctityofmarriage,wemust admitthattherearefewCatholicor soundlyChristianbooksthatwecould recommendforthelibraryshelves, whichareatoncesteepedinspiritualityandpracticalandexplicitenoughin detailtofillalloftheinquirers'needs. Butthereissomethingfarbetterthan booforthispurpose;thereisthe livinginstructionthatCatholicshave alwaysfoundfromthesourceswhence itshouldcome-fromhomeand church.Inthesedaysofhurriedmarriages,parentsandpriestsalikemust holdfasttotheirsacredprivilegeof instructingtheyounginthesematters.
