Enquirer,Sixth-Avenue,Maylands:

QUnlessIammistaken,yourecentlydescribedMartinLutherasan apostatemonk.Would)youpay thatCardinalNewmanwasnotalso anapostate?Thiswordmeans, accordingtotheConciseOxford Dictionary,"oneguiltyofapostasy"-whichmeans"abandonment sofreligiousfaith,vows,principlesor Party."

A.:MartinLuther,asIsaid,was anapdstatemonk,whopubliclyrenouncedtheCatholicfaithandstarted theso-calledProtestantreform.He wasanapostatebothinthebroad popularmeaningofthetermandalso inthestricttheologicalsense.For theword"apostate"isusednowadaysnotonlyinthetraditionalChristiansenseofonewhohasdeserted thetruereligion,andespeciallyone whohasdonesoinbadfaith,butalso inamoregeneralsensetosignifyone whohasdesertedANYreligiousfaith orprinciples.Sothat,strictlyspeaking,andIshould'saycorrectlyspeaking,CardinalNewmanwasbyno meansanapostate.Toabandonerrorfortruth,ashedid,isnotapostasyinthetrueandcorrectsenseof theterm.ThatwasjustthedifferencebetweenNewmanandLuther. Oneactedtogoodfaith,theotherin badfaith.Anyonewhoisfamiliar withthehistoryofMartinLutherwill knowthathewasbornandbrought upaCatholic,andthathetookthe vowsofaCatholicpriestandmonkor friar.Beforehebrokeawayfrom theChurchhehadalreadyfailedin hisobligationsasapriest,anditis notunreasonabletosupposethatthe violentandindecenttiradesinwhich hegavehisreasonsforhischangeof religionwerebuttheexpressionofa mindconsciousofitsownbadfaith.

Ontheotherhand,ifanyonedoubts Newman'ssincerityorgoodfaithhe hasonlytoreadtheCardinal's"ApologiaproVitaSua"tohavehisdoubts setatrest.ItisuniversallyadmittedthatNewman'sbookisnotonly amasterpieceofprose,butoneofthe mostsincerebookseverwritteninthe Englishlanguage.

Aposthsyreallymeans,then,to abandonthetruth.CardinalNewman,ontheotherhand,recognised andembracedthetruthwhenhebecameamemberoftheCatholic

Onemorepoint.ChristwasGod andmanatthesametime.SometimesHespokeasGodandsometimesasman.AsGodHewasequal totheFather,asmanHewasnot.As GodHecouldsay:IandtheFather areone,anditsaysintheGospelthat "theJewsthentookup'stonesto stoneHim."AsmanHecouldsay: TheFatherisgrEaterthanI But whereyouseemtobeconfusedisin thefactthattheSeconddivinePersonoftheGod-headiscalledtheSon ofGod,thereforewhenSt,Petersaid: "ThouareChrist,theSonofthelivingGod,'hemeant"ThouareChrist, theSecondPersonoftheTrinity,and thereforeThouartGodHimself,'and THATiswhyChristsaidtoHim, "Blessedartthou,Simon:because fleshandbloodbathnotrevealedit tothee,butmyFatherwhoisinheaven."Simon,orPeter,ashewas calledlater,couldneverhaverealised thatChristwasactuallyGodHimself unless,asChristsaid,HisFatherin heavenhadrevealedittoPeter.It wasanawfulbigactoffaithon Peter'spart,youknow,tolookat thatmanstandingthereinfrontof himandsay,"IbelieveyouareGod."
