MeantimetheGermanshavebeen pumpingoutcommentson"CruxAnsata"overtheradio,implyingthat Mr.Wells'attackontheVaticanexpressedthemindoftheBritishGovernmentandarguingthatitisclear fromMr.Wells'bookthattheBritish bombedtheVatican!

Thecontroversystartedwhenthe "CatholicHerald"printeclareview of"CruxAnsata."Mr.Wellsreplied withsomewarmth,andthe"Herald" editorinvitedhimtolunchtodisctiss thebook,suggestingthatFatherHeenanshouldbebroughtin,too.

Mr.Wellsaccepted,stipulatingonly thatthediscussionshouldbeconfined toallegedmisstatementsinhisbook

Mr.delaBedoyere'slettercontinues:"However,sinceIpersonally amveryanxioustomeetyouIam quitepreparedtoabidebyyournew conditions.Imust,however,inform youthatinthecaseofabooklike 'CruxAnsata'theyaresomewhatonerous.Inmyviewtheworkissostiff withmisstatements,half-truths,innuendoesandlogicalfallaciesthatany attempttofurnishyouwithafullcase againstitdemandswhatistantamounttoanotherbook,overburdened withauthoritativereferences.Asit is,Ihavebymesomefiftypagesof close-typedmanuscriptwhicharethe roughnotesofathoroughexposeof thehistorical,philosophicandreligious misconceptionsandfallaciesinvolved inthe'smallsectionofforty-four misstatements,thereferencesofwhich Ihaveforwardedtoyou.Idonot, however,shirkthetaskofputtingthese notesintoreadableform,sinceinany caseIhavebeenthinkingofpublishingarefutationofyourbook. NowheredoesGodforbidalcoholic drink.WhenonearthasmanHe evendrankwineHimself.Risfirst miracleswastochangewaterinto wine,andthegreatSt.PaulrecommendstheBishop,Timothy,tousea littlewineforhisstomach'ssake.No oneisdenyingtheabuseofdrink,but theChurchrefusestoadmitthatsuch asweepingthingt,s,theabolitionof drinkaltogetherisjustifiedbecauseof theparticularabusesTheChurch drillsintoeveryoneofhermembers thatdrunkennessisanunjustifiable sin,butsherefusestoadmitthatprohibitionshouldbeenforcedonall,It isnotdrinkinitselfwhichisevil,but theabuseofit.AndtheChurchtries topointthatoutinasaneway,aashe doeswithgambling.Toadopt'any otherattitudewouldbeanunjustinterferencewithindividualliberty.And inanycaseyoucan'tFORCEpeople tohevirtuous.

Sohowcanyousaythatbothareof theCatholicfaith?Theirdoctrines differ,notinaccidentals,butinessentials;thereisafundamentaldifference betweenthem.Theofficialteaching ofbothmakesthatveryclear.

WearetaughtthatGodisLove,yet seeallkindsofphysicalsufferingin theworldamongstbothanimalsand men,itiscommonlyobjected. itdoesnotthereforefollowthat GodisnotLove.Thatphysicalsufferingcreatesaproblemforthehuman mindwedonotdeny.Thereismuch intheworldthatwecannotexplain, andthatwedonotseehowtoreconcilewithourideasofaninfinitelylovingGod.Butourinadequateknowledgeisnotasufficientreasonforrejectingthepositiveevidenceforthe factthatGodisLove,providedboth byreasonandrevelation.Thereis goodintheworldaswellasevil.In fact,thesum-totalofhappinesssooutweighsthesum-totalofpainthatthe normalinstinctofbothanimalsand menistoclingtoliferatherthanrelinquishit.Fortherest.wecanbut takeitforgrantedthat,increating thisparticularkindofworld,andpermittingitsconcomitantevils,Godhad apurposewecannotyetfullycomprehend.Sowespeakofthe"mystery ofsuffering."Butitisamystery whichdoesnotjustifyourdenyingthat GodisLove.Nordoesthedenial thatGodisLo'vemakepainandsufferinganylessofaproblem.The onewhobelievesinGodmaynothave acompleteanswer,buthehastheconvictionthatwhateverGodhaspermitted,Hehaspermittedinviewofsome greatergoodwhichwilleventually beattained.Buttheonewhodenies Godisleftwithoutanansweratall, andcanviewtheevilshecan'tremedyonlywithpessimismanddespair.

TheOldTestament,insomeplaces, mayseemharshonafirstreading,but thatisnotso.TheCatholicChurch unquestionablyacceptstheGodofthe OldTestament,anddeclaresthatall recordedofHimthereisinkeeping withHisjusticeandmercy.Butshe naturallyinsiststhatwhatisrecordedtheremustnotbedistorted.And itisdistortiontospeakofHishaving "commandedtheslayingofuntrespassingwomenandlittlechildren,"asif thatisalltherewastoit.Menare notonlyindividuals;theyarealsosocialbeings.Therearenationalcrimes

aswellaspersonaldelinquencies.And thepunishmentofanationorofacity assuch,eventhoughinnocentindividualsaswellasguiltysuffer,isaconsequenceofsocialsolidarity.Itmust alsobekeptinmindthatGodisthe SupremeAuthoroflifeanddeath.He isnotobligedtocreatelivingbeings, andHeisnotobligedtopreservein lifelongerthanHewillsanybeingHe haschosentocreate.Heisnottobe judgedasifHeHimselfwereacreature,andnotaCreator.Itmustalso bekeptinmindthatbeingputto deathinthisworldisatemporaldisasterwhichdoesnotofitselfaffect one'seternaldestiny.Theinnocent whosufferinthisworldforthecrimes ofothersteceiveacompensatinghappinessintheirtrueandeternallife comparedwithwhichtheirsojournon earthwillseembutmomentary,howeverlongorshortitsdurationseems tousnow.

Itwaswithsincereregretthatthe parishionerslearntsomeweeksago thatRev.FatherLynchwastoleave ustobecomeparishpriestofMidland Junction.DuringFatherLynch'sthree yearsinNorthammuchhasbeenaccomplishedintheparish,Spiritually andmaterially,andthewell-beingof everysectionofhiscommunitywas everhisfirstcare.Religiousceremonies,rareincountryparishes,were madepracticablebythepresenceof priestsministeringtotheArmyestablishmentsinandaboutNortham,and FatherLynchtookeveryopportunity tomaketheseceremoniesavailableto hisflock,Theparishwasconstantly visited,missionsandretreatswere conductedmorefrequentlythanusual, andnewsocietiesforthewell-beingof thefaithfulwereinaugurated.The taskofreconditioningthechurch buildingswasundertaken,newfurnishingswereprocured,andthegrounds andfenceswereputinorder,andnow withhisworkcomplete,FatherLynch passesontoanewworkandNortham isgratefulforthosethreeyears.It waswithprideandgratitudethatso manyfilledSt.Joseph'sHallonSunday,February27.togivetangible proofoftheirappreciationofallthe workssowelldone.

Thefarewellsocialwasunderthe chairmanshipofMr.E.Grant,who readlettersofapologyfromRev. FatherLenihan,Rev.FatherRegan, andRev.FatherLinane,allofwhom joinedinextendingtheirbestwishes toFatherLynch.

Mr.Grant,speakingonbehalfofthe HolyNameSociety,reviewedthe workdonebyFatherLynchinhis threeyears,andexpressedthesatisfactionofallthatsomuchhadbeen accomplished.HeregrettedthatHis GracehadfounditnecessarytotransferFatherLynch,buthefeltsure thatwhereverhewentgreatthings wouldbeaccomplished.Onbehalf oftheHolyNameSocietyMr,E. Grantwishedeveryblessingandgrace toFatherLynch.

Messrs.TankardandLynch,onbehalfoftheparishioners,supportedthe remarksofthechairman.

Forthefirsttimeinitshistory,BunburyhasaMayor(Mr.Payne),who itappearsisreadytomakereckless andoffensivestatementsaboutour ConventschoolsandtheCatholiccommunity.Theseassertionsprovethat thegentlemanmustbeastrangernot onlytoBunbury,buttothetimehonouredcodeofhighregardandfellowshipalwaysshowntooneanother inthefulllifeandintercourseofthis town. Thereisonethingentirelycertain thattheCatholicshavenointention oftakingwordoractofanoffensive naturefromthepresentincumbentof theMayoralofficewithoutfulland promptcounter-action.

Sir,-OnmyreturnfromPerth,myattentionwasdrawntoremarksmade byhisWorshiptheMayorinyour paper,February24th.,1944.''Mr. Paynesaidthatitwasadeplorable stateofaffairswhentheeducationof childrenwasinterferedwithjustbecausetheycouldnotfindaccommodation.Thespeakerwentontosay that;manyofthesechildhenhadbeen divertedtotheConventfortheireducation,insteadofbeingabletoenjoy theprivilegesofHighSchooleducation onaccountoftheaccommodationproblem."Thestatementamazedme andhurtmyfeelings.Iimmediately setaboutascertainingthefacts.I havepersonallyquestionedthepupils andfoundtwocasesinall-onewhere thegirlleftherlodgings(whichshe didnotlike)andcametoboardat theConvent;theothercamebecause shecouldfindnoothersuitableplace. Sothe"many'divertedtotheConventarenowreducedtothetwoas stated.

TheConventSchoolshavenoneed ofanemergencytofilltheirclassrooms.Theycarryontheirrolls(includingSouthBunburyandCommercialClass)400pupils.TheBunbury Schoolistaxedpracticallytocapacity. Regardingthelosstopupilsattending theConventSchool,Iwouldremind theMayorthatlongbeforetherewas talkofaHighSchool,St.Joseph'swas functioningefficiently.Almost40 yearsagothisschoolwassuccessfully preparingcandidatesfortheAdelaide University.Sincethefoundingof PerthUniversityourschoolsprepares annuallycandidatesforJuniorand LeavingSince1937thirty-ninecandidateshavesatforJuniororLeaving-allhavingpassedwithoneexception.InPostOfficeExaminations (opentoallschools)onfouroccasions ourpupilswonfirstplacesandmany highplacesaswell.Everybusiness maninBunburyknowshowCommercialWorkistaughtbytheMercyConvent.sEvenif''many,"astheMayor falselystated,hadbeendivertedtothe ConventSchool,theycouldtravelfartherandfareworse.

AttheGenevaConventionin1929a RedCrossComissionwasappointed, whichwasdenedtomeetthespiritualneedsofrisoners-or-war.Anarticlewasagreedtobytheparticipant nationsthatall prisoner's-of-war shouldhavefreedomofreligion,and thatanyministersintheirmidst mightfreelypreachtheirdoctrinesat servicesinthecamps.

JacquesCourvoisier,Vice-President oftheCommission,duringaseriesof toursofprisoncampsinGermany, sawtheestablishmentoflittlechurches,withagrowingnumberoffollowers.

Hisfirstvisitwasin1940,whenthe menhadnotbeenincaptivityvery long.Theywereunsettledasyet, andnothingdefinitehadbeenorganisedinanysphereofactivity.In somecases,wheretherewereministersamongtheprisoners,littlegroups werejustbeginning,butotherwise theywerenotbroughttogetherforrgligiousservicesatall.Someofthe campsdidnotevenhaveaBiblein theirownlanguage.Therewereno chapels,notevenaspecialroomto meetin.Whatservicestherewere consistedofanumberofmenassemblingsomewhereonaSunday,witha prisoner-of-warministertoleadthem.

Whenhereturnedayearlater,a greatchangehadoccurred.Themen hadbecomeresignedtobeinginterned forthedurationofthewar,andlibraries,workrooms,theatresandworkshophadbeenestablished.Prisonerof-warChaplainsvisitedasmany campsasoftenastheycould,andone ofthemhadhimselfbuiltabeautiful littlechapelwithinhisowncamp.In manyoftheofficers'camps,there werechapelsforservices,andinthe Stalagsalocalhallwasusuallylent forthepurpose.Numbersattending serviceshadgrownenormously,and arestillgrow:ng.

Anintensefaithisevidentamong prisoners-manyofthemhavebeen baptisedandtakentheirfirstCommunionthere,andsomesaytheyhave learnttheirfaithbehindthebarbed wireoftheprisoncamp.

RedCrosshelpsthelittlechurches bysendingpamphletsandbooksto themDuring1942,100,000booksand pamphletsweresent,including25,000 BiblesorportionsofHolyScriptures, andsomehymnbooks.AtEaster andChristmas,specialbookletsare issuedtohelptheprisonersintheir services.

Internalandexternalinfluenceshave undoubtedlyledtomarkeddifferences invariousorganismsfromcharacteristicspossessedbyoriginalancestors. Thatnewspecieshavearisenbyevolutionisnomorethanaplausible theorywhichCatholicsarequitefree toholdasanopinionifitappealsto them.Wheremanisconcerned,the CatholicChurchhasnotofficiallycondemnedthetheorythathisbodyis derivedbyevolutionfromloweranimals.ACaeholiccouldholdthat withoutoffendingagainstwhatisof faith,thoughitwouldbeagainstthe judgmentofmostCatholictheologians, philosophers,andscientists.AllCatholicsmustholdthatthesoulofman isdirectlycreatedbyGod.That,at least,iscertainlynottheproductof evolution.
