WearetaughtthatGodisLove,yet seeallkindsofphysicalsufferingin theworldamongstbothanimalsand men,itiscommonlyobjected. itdoesnotthereforefollowthat GodisnotLove.Thatphysicalsufferingcreatesaproblemforthehuman mindwedonotdeny.Thereismuch intheworldthatwecannotexplain, andthatwedonotseehowtoreconcilewithourideasofaninfinitelylovingGod.Butourinadequateknowledgeisnotasufficientreasonforrejectingthepositiveevidenceforthe factthatGodisLove,providedboth byreasonandrevelation.Thereis goodintheworldaswellasevil.In fact,thesum-totalofhappinesssooutweighsthesum-totalofpainthatthe normalinstinctofbothanimalsand menistoclingtoliferatherthanrelinquishit.Fortherest.wecanbut takeitforgrantedthat,increating thisparticularkindofworld,andpermittingitsconcomitantevils,Godhad apurposewecannotyetfullycomprehend.Sowespeakofthe"mystery ofsuffering."Butitisamystery whichdoesnotjustifyourdenyingthat GodisLove.Nordoesthedenial thatGodisLo'vemakepainandsufferinganylessofaproblem.The onewhobelievesinGodmaynothave acompleteanswer,buthehastheconvictionthatwhateverGodhaspermitted,Hehaspermittedinviewofsome greatergoodwhichwilleventually beattained.Buttheonewhodenies Godisleftwithoutanansweratall, andcanviewtheevilshecan'tremedyonlywithpessimismanddespair.
TheOldTestament,insomeplaces, mayseemharshonafirstreading,but thatisnotso.TheCatholicChurch unquestionablyacceptstheGodofthe OldTestament,anddeclaresthatall recordedofHimthereisinkeeping withHisjusticeandmercy.Butshe naturallyinsiststhatwhatisrecordedtheremustnotbedistorted.And itisdistortiontospeakofHishaving "commandedtheslayingofuntrespassingwomenandlittlechildren,"asif thatisalltherewastoit.Menare notonlyindividuals;theyarealsosocialbeings.Therearenationalcrimes
aswellaspersonaldelinquencies.And thepunishmentofanationorofacity assuch,eventhoughinnocentindividualsaswellasguiltysuffer,isaconsequenceofsocialsolidarity.Itmust alsobekeptinmindthatGodisthe SupremeAuthoroflifeanddeath.He isnotobligedtocreatelivingbeings, andHeisnotobligedtopreservein lifelongerthanHewillsanybeingHe haschosentocreate.Heisnottobe judgedasifHeHimselfwereacreature,andnotaCreator.Itmustalso bekeptinmindthatbeingputto deathinthisworldisatemporaldisasterwhichdoesnotofitselfaffect one'seternaldestiny.Theinnocent whosufferinthisworldforthecrimes ofothersteceiveacompensatinghappinessintheirtrueandeternallife comparedwithwhichtheirsojournon earthwillseembutmomentary,howeverlongorshortitsdurationseems tousnow.
TheCatholicChurchdoesnotteach thatGodacceptedthephysicalagony ofChristinassuagementofHiswrath. Wrathorangerisahumanpassion whichcannotbeattributedtoGod savebyanalogy.Again,astheCatholicChurchteachesthatGodisimmutable,therecanbenoquestionof assuagingHimfromastateofirascibilitytooneoftranquillity.Asregardstheworkofredemption,Godso lovedmankindastogiveHisonly-begottenSon,thatSoninturnfreelybecomingmaninordertorendertoGod inthenameofthehumanbeings whosenatureHesharedtheobedience andloveevenuntodeathwhichmen hadrefused.BecauseHewasthe verySonofGodHisofferinghada meritandvaluewhichmorethancompensatedforthetinsofmen.Not vindictive'anger,butaperfectblendingofmercyandjustice,neitherexcludingtheclaimsoftheother, promptedGod'sacceptanceonourbehalfoftheself-offeringofHisSon, WhohadmadeHimselfonewithus. Itwaswithsincereregretthatthe parishionerslearntsomeweeksago thatRev.FatherLynchwastoleave ustobecomeparishpriestofMidland Junction.DuringFatherLynch'sthree yearsinNorthammuchhasbeenaccomplishedintheparish,Spiritually andmaterially,andthewell-beingof everysectionofhiscommunitywas everhisfirstcare.Religiousceremonies,rareincountryparishes,were madepracticablebythepresenceof priestsministeringtotheArmyestablishmentsinandaboutNortham,and FatherLynchtookeveryopportunity tomaketheseceremoniesavailableto hisflock,Theparishwasconstantly visited,missionsandretreatswere conductedmorefrequentlythanusual, andnewsocietiesforthewell-beingof thefaithfulwereinaugurated.The taskofreconditioningthechurch buildingswasundertaken,newfurnishingswereprocured,andthegrounds andfenceswereputinorder,andnow withhisworkcomplete,FatherLynch passesontoanewworkandNortham isgratefulforthosethreeyears.It waswithprideandgratitudethatso manyfilledSt.Joseph'sHallonSunday,February27.togivetangible proofoftheirappreciationofallthe workssowelldone.
Thefarewellsocialwasunderthe chairmanshipofMr.E.Grant,who readlettersofapologyfromRev. FatherLenihan,Rev.FatherRegan, andRev.FatherLinane,allofwhom joinedinextendingtheirbestwishes toFatherLynch.
Mr.Grant,speakingonbehalfofthe HolyNameSociety,reviewedthe workdonebyFatherLynchinhis threeyears,andexpressedthesatisfactionofallthatsomuchhadbeen accomplished.HeregrettedthatHis GracehadfounditnecessarytotransferFatherLynch,buthefeltsure thatwhereverhewentgreatthings wouldbeaccomplished.Onbehalf oftheHolyNameSocietyMr,E. JacquesCourvoisier,Vice-President oftheCommission,duringaseriesof toursofprisoncampsinGermany, sawtheestablishmentoflittlechurches,withagrowingnumberoffollowers.
Hisfirstvisitwasin1940,whenthe menhadnotbeenincaptivityvery long.Theywereunsettledasyet, andnothingdefinitehadbeenorganisedinanysphereofactivity.In somecases,wheretherewereministersamongtheprisoners,littlegroups werejustbeginning,butotherwise theywerenotbroughttogetherforrgligiousservicesatall.Someofthe campsdidnotevenhaveaBiblein theirownlanguage.Therewereno chapels,notevenaspecialroomto meetin.Whatservicestherewere consistedofanumberofmenassemblingsomewhereonaSunday,witha prisoner-of-warministertoleadthem.
