"Tito,"theCommander-in-Chiefof thepartisanforcesinYugoslavia,is nowrevealedtobeJosipBroz,aformermemberoftheInternationalBrigadesinSpain.Itisalsoannounced thattherankofMarshalhasbeenconferredonhim,butwhoconferreditis notstatedandisnotatallclear. KingPeter,whoalonehadauthorityto doso,hasrepudiatedhimaltogether.
Brosis,webelieve,thethirdtobear thetitleof"Tito,"thesuccessortothe RussianLebedevandtheHungarian KostaNagye.Attemptsarebeing madetorepresenthisactivityinthe InternationalBrigadesastheprofessionalactivityofasoldierseeking militaryexperience:whereasitisthe dearestsignofinternationalCommunistideology.

TheconversationsinCairobetween PresidentInonuofTurkeyandtheAlliedleaderssuggestverystronglythat amilitarycampaignintheBalkans isinprospect,perhapswiththeTurks asactiveparticipants;butnoRussian principalwenttoCairo,andtheRed Armyisnotlikelytoparticipate. lIewasPresidentofitatthetime whenitexpelleditssixtydemocratically-electedCommunistmembers,after theCommunistshadshownthemselves unfittotakepartingovernmentby manyoutrages,includingthemurder ofaformerMinister,Drashkovitch, andthehurlingofabombatthe
PrinceRegent.LaterDr.RibarbecamefirstspeakeroftheYugoslav Parliament.Hispositionpriortothis nowappointmentwasvice-presidentof theDemocraticParty;buthehasa sonwhoiswell-knownasaCommunist,andisoneoftheleadersofthe partisans.

amongYugoslays.Theothers,allarbitrarilynominated,prestimablyby thesameauthoritythatmadeTitoa Marshal,aremenofwhomnotone Yugoslavinahundredhadpreviously heard.
ItisapparentthatCommunistinfluenceinthemovementisconsiderable, anditisdoubtlesstheCommunistdesiretocaptureitentirely.Butthe movementcontrolsoraspirestocontrolforcesclaimedtoincludenearly aquarterofamillionmenindistricts whichareverydeeplyCatholic-mainlyCroatiaandSlovenia-and,whatevertheassociationsofitsleaders, stitiibroadly-basedsupportwould hardlybeforthcomingforaregime committedtoCommunismandexclusivelyconductedbymenassociated withtheThirdInternational.Anumberofpriests,bothCatholicandOrthodox,haveidentifiedthemselveswith it,anditspublishedprogrammeis, doubtlessfortheirbenefit.'inbroad andmoderateterms,disavowing"every formofviolenceandlawlessness"as wellasthedesirefor"radicalchange" beforetheendofthewarmakesfree debatepossible.Itstressestheimportanceofprivatepropertyand"initiativeinindustryandtheeconoarkic field."

SpeakingattheYorkConvocation, theArchbishopofYorknotmerelyminimisedtherestrictionsimposedon ChristianityinRussia,butsaidthatin somewaysitwasbetteroffthanin GreatBritain.

Itisnotonlyimportantinthemajor thingslikehearingMassandreceivingtheSacramentsregularly,butalso ineverydetailofdomesticlife.The childrenwillbenobetterthantheexamplesettheminthehome.Parentsshould,therefore,bemostzealous toseethatthechilddoesnotneglect itsprayers,thatithearsnowordof improperlanguage,orseesanything whichmightscandaliseitinthehome. Herearethebasicfinancialfigures oftheAct:
1.Eachveteranmustpayin.cash10 percent.ofthecostofthelandand improvements(maximum,3,000dollars),sothathemayhaveapersonal stakeintheenterprise.
2.ThetotalloanfromtheGovernmentmustnotexceedtwo-thirdsof thecostofthelandandimprovements;repaymentcontractsextend over25years,withinterestat3iper cent.perannum.
3.Aconditionalgrantequaltoonethirdofthecostofthelandandimprovements,plusthecostof'stockand equipmentuptoamaximumof1,200 dollarswillbemadetoeachsoldier settlerfullycomplyingwiththeterms ofhisagreementduringaperiodof tenyears.
Accordingtotheseprovisions,atypical160-acreplaceinamixedfarmingregionwouldcostareturningveteranadownpaymentof360dollars. FatherBreslinsaidthatnoone couldbeatruefollowerofJesus ChristanddenyHisDivinity.Noone :wasentitledtothenameofChristian whodidnotbelievethatChristis God.Itwasthebasicdogmaofour holyreligion.ForifHewerenotGod thenHewasamadman,afool.
Comebackwithmeinspirittothe sceneenactedonGoodFridaymorningbeforetheSupremeTribunalof theJewishpeople.Jesuswason trialforHislife.Herealisedwhat pas HighPriestputs thequestion:"Doyouclaimtobe God?"AndJesusanswered,"Ido." TheJewsinventedotherchargeswhen theybroughtHimbeforetheRoman Governor,becausetheyknewPilate wasnotinterestedinwhattheyconsideredblasphemy.ButtheycondemnedHimandHediedforsaying HewastheirGod.Mereadoptive Sonshipwouldnothavebeenablasphemousclaim,TheHighPriest asked(wasitrealSonship?WasHe claimingtobetheirGodinthestrict sense?AndJesussays,"Yes."If Hediedforafalsehood,Hewaseither afooloraknave.HewasdeliberatelyandcallouslydeceivingHisfollowers;orelseHewassufferingfromdelusions.TheJewishCourthadnoalternative.Itsmemberseitherhadto adoreHimorsentenceHimtodeath. Therewasnologicalgroundforcompromise.
Soitistothisday.Menmust eitheracceptHisclaimtoDivinity orrejectHimtotally.Noreasonable beingexaminingChrist'scredentials canafterwardsremainneutral.He waseitherGodorafraud.IfHe (wereanimposterthentheChristian Religioniswrong.
Everyheresyhasbeenanindirect attackontheDivinityofChrist.The teachingauthorityoftheCatholic Churchisproudhumanarrogance, senselesstyranny,wereitnotthatshe teachesbyHisauthorityandHeis God.Soeveryblow,althoughaimed ather,hasbeenindirectlyaimedat Him,sinceHeisherguarantee.Her infallibility,herSacramentscamefrom Him.Toquestionherteachingisto questionHisrighttoteach,toquestionHisrightistoquestionHisDivinity.
"WhatthinkyeofChrist,whoseSon islie?"isaquestionasvitallyimportant,aspregnantwithconsequences,to-dayasit.wasnineteencenturiesago.Uponitsacceptancedependstheeternalsalvationofmen. Uponitsacceptancedependseven men'stemporalhappinessandwelfare

Holymen,Prophetsandleadersof God'speoplehadraisedotherpeople fromthedead.Butnomanhadever raisedhimselffromthedead.The challengewasaccepted,andJesus keptHisword.Inchallengingthe factoftheResurrectiontheveryenemiesofJesusstandwitnesstothe factofHisdeathandthefactofHis prophecythatHewouldriseagain fromthedead.Whenitactuallyoccurredtheydidnotattempttodeny thefact,buttriedtokeeptheknowledgeofithiddenfromthepeople. Theywerethemselvesthebestwitnessesoftheirownduplicity.
OnlyGodcanforgivesin.Itisan
Him. OurDivineLordforgavesinsinHisownName andbyHisownauthorityasbeingthe personagainstwhomtheoffencewas committedandwhen,asontheoccasionofthemansickofthepalsy,the unbelieversqUestionedHisaction,He workedaphysicalmiracletoprove thattheinvisiblespiritualcurehad alsotaken,place.HeforgaveMagdalengravesinsbecauseofthegreat lovesheshowedtoHim.Thesins werecommittedagainstthePersontowardsWhomsheshowedherlove, namely,Himself.
JesusclaimedthatHewasGod.He emphaticallydeclaredittoHisdisciples,tothepeopleandtoHisjudges. OntheoccasionofthevisitmadeduringHispubliclifetoJerusalemHe said:"Godsolovedtheworldasto giveHisonlybegottenSonsothatall thatbelieveinHimmaynotperish butmayhavelifeeverlasting."
JesuspraisedandrewardedSt. PeterforhisprofessionoffaithinHis Divinity.Itwouldnotrequireaninspirationforadoptedsonshiporsonshipinanywidesense;itmusthave beenrealSonship,notsomethingspecialtoChristinsenselessthanreal Sonship.
HisownpropheciesproveHisDivinity.Jesusforetoldthingswhichactuallyhappenedlateron.OnlyGod canforeseethefuture.Heforetold Hisdeathanditsattendantcircumstances,thatHewouldbecrucified, thatPeterwoulddenyHimandJudas betrayHim.HealsoforetoldthedestructionofJerusalem.Thoseprophecieswerefulfilledtotheletter. Thefulfilmentoftheseprophecies provesthatChrist'steachingwasthe teachingofGod.ButJesustaught thatHewasGod.ThereforeChrist isGod.Theconclusionisinescapable. HeistrulyGodwhoiworksmiracles inHisownnameandbyHisown power.Jesusdid,andsoHeisGod. TheApostles,ProphetsandSaints ascribedtheirmiraclestoGodandacknowledgedtheirpowercamefrom Him,TheyworkedwondersinHis name.Thecircumstancesortheir ownstatementsshowthis.ButJesus didtheminHisownnameandbyHis ownpower.ForHimthegiftofmiracleswasnotaborrowedgift,but somethingessentiallyHisown.
Resurrectionandthe
Hispubliclifewasablazeofmiracles.Heraisedthedead,restored sighttotheblind,hearingtothedeaf: natureherselfobeyedHim,thewinds andthewaveshearkenedtoHis voice,thedumbspokeagian,lepers werecleansed.Hispresenceevenwas notnecessary.Hecuredatadistance,MoreoverHeworkedthose miraclestoconfirmHisclaimtobe God.AtnotimedidHesayHedid thesewondersmerelyasalegateof God.IfHewereamessengerofGod andnothingmoreHewasboundto havemadesomepublicacknowledgement'ofit.OnlyGodcanworka miracle.SowhenGodtheFatherset Hisseal-miracles-onChrist'steachingthatChristwasGoditmustnecessarilyhaveHisfullapproval.Heis responsiblebecauseweacceptthe teachingHehassealed.Godcantolerateerror,butHecannotbethe causeoferror,sinceHeisabsolute Truth.Hehacledusintoerrorif ChristisnotGod.
Jesus,eventhemostrabidatheist admits,wasaperfectman.Tothose whowithheartsfullofhatewatched Himdaily,observedHiseveryaction, listenedtoHiseveryword,Heissued thechallenge,"Pointoutonefaultof mine-whichofyoucanconvinceme ofsin?"Andtheycouldn't.And He,theperfectman,claimedtobe God.
What,then,didthismostperfectindividualonthestageofhistorysay aboutHimself?Hewho,inthe mindsofallmen,believersandunbelievers,ismostperfectshouldbe bestabletoanalyseHisownperfect personality.TheGospelsarecrowded withstatementsofChristaboutHimself.Eachoneofthemisclothed withsimplicity.Notoneofthemis wrappedinthetinselofhumanboasting.Everyoneofthemisreducible tothis.ChristclaimedtobeGod,the SonofGod,notinthegeneralsense inwhichmenareentitledtocall
themselvesthechildrenorsonsof God,butinarealandnaturalway, inawaywhichsetHimapartfrom thisrestofmenbecause,inverytruth, HewasonewithGod,Thisisthe truthwhichthefollowingGospelquotations,chosenatrandomfromscores ofotherthatmighthavebeentaken, insistentlyandinvinciblyshowforth:
"IandtheFatherareOne"(St. John,X,30).

Herhusbandpredeceasedherin 1924.Sheissurvivedbyonesonand sixdaughters.TheeldestsonLieut. W.V.Fitzpatrick)waskilledinthe lastwar,andasonanddaughterdied ininfancy.

Time,placeandconditionshadbeen predictedandfulfilledtotheletter, butwhenHecameuntoHisownchosenpeopletheyreceivedHimnot,they rejectedandcrucifiedtheirGod;in theirblindragetheytriedtoextinguishtheLightthathurtthembyits strongshining,fortheirworkswere evilandtherebyunwittinglyfulfilled anotherprophecy,.
