"ThosewhoaxebornCatholicsandmaintaintheFaitharemostfortunate.Theycanliveanddiewithoutbeingbesetwiththe doubtsthattroublemostothers. Theyhavesignpostsatevery corneroftheroad.

ThespeakerwasGeneTunney, formerheavyweightprofessionalboxingchampionoftheworld,nowholder oftherankofcommanderintheUnitedStatesNavy-themancharged withdevelopingthephysicaltraining programmebywhichthepersonnelof thatNavyarekeptinfightingcondition.

"Astrangeboy,"hewascalledlong agobyhisfriend,Dr.FrederickVan Vliet,oftheGreenwichVillagesection ofNewYork;andprobablymostpeoplewouldcallhimto-day"astrange man."ButGeneTunneyis"strange" onlyinthathewasbornwithathirst forknowledge,astrongphysiqueand /withthatmysticalqualitythatcan makethepoet,theidealist,thereformer.

HeFoughtandWon.

Genehasknownwhatitistobe laughedatandsneeredatbecausethepossessorofthosegifts-hechose toundertakeawayoflifemoreoften associatedthesedayswithsensationalism,withmoneygrubbing.andwith gangsterdom'svicesthanwiththe thing'softhespirit.

NoonewillknowthefightthatTunneyhadtomaketoreachthetop rungoftheprofessionhechose.It wasnotjustamatterofcleanring battles;itwasthethingsoutsidethe ringwithwhichhehadtocontend. ButGeneTunneyfoughtinthering andwon;foughtoutsideit-andwon. Theimpressisonhimnow.

Youcanreadit,ifyouwill,inthe messageheofferstotheyouthofNew Zealand-aquotation,asyouwould expect,fromShakespeare.

"Tothineownselfbetrue,andit follows,asthenightfollowsday,that

thoucanstnutthenbefalsetoany man. ."

Orinthatotherquotation,thistime fromMarcusAurelius,Emperorof Rome,whichTunneyofferedtothe boyboxerswhomheaddressedfrom thestageoftheTownHall,Auckland, recently.

"Untilamanhasfoughtandbeaten himselfheisnotproperlyequipped totakeonothers."

Itwastowardstheendofhisstay inNewZealandthatGeneTunney grantedtheinterviewofwhichthis storyistheresult,anditseemed ratherstrange,actually,tocarrythe discussionofspiritualthingstothat busyoffice-anactiveway-postonthe pathofwar-tositbyforamoment ortwowhilethatbig,easy-sittingfigureofamanfinishedapieceofdictation,andwroteabriefletter.But yougetusedtothestrangenessof GeneTunney.

"Studious,Religious,Athletic."

Itisjust,actually,thattheworldas awholeisapttoclassifypeople.This manisascholar,thismananorator, thismanapersonageofaffairs,and thataprize-fighter. Andhere,all ofasudden,youcomeacrossonewho issomethingofallthosethings.All thatcausesareactionintheinterviewer.Youseekmorethanwords andthoughtsandflashesofpersonality.Youseekthroughamazeofsubjects,aconversationalpotpourri,for thekeythatwillsolvetheriddleof GeneTunney.

"Studious,religiousandathletiche mostsurelyis;andIbelieveIhave ratedthequalitiesintheorderofimportanceastheybearonthecharac-

terofGeneTunney...:'Thatwas lwrittensixteenyearsagobyaNew Yorknewspaperman,EdVanEvery. Youthinkthosewordsoverasyousit overthedeskfromhimandstudyhim, andmostlyyouagreewiththewriter. Butthereisonewordthatseemsto encompasshismajorqualities "clean."Cleancut,cleanlimbed, cleanthinking.Aninherentcleanness.

Allhisqualitiesareanaturalpart ofhim.Thereisnothingoftheshowman,theposeur.Theworldfigureis ;listadecent,cleanman-withthe bodytofightWith,themindtoacquireknowledge,andthespiritof idealismthatdirectsthOseothertwo atributesalongtherightchannelsof development.

Youlearnofhimthatinhisyouth cleanmindednesswasnotablyapartof hischaracter.Boyhoodplaymates havetoldhowhewouldimmediately removehimselfiftherewasasemblanceoffilthintheconversation.Yet itwasnotmerepriggishness.Itwas somethinginstinctive:somethingthat hadbeennurturedinhimbyhis mother,andbyhistrainingatLaSalle Academy,theChristianBrothers' schoolwherehegainedhisprimaryand secondaryeducation.

Probablyhisreadingassistedalso Hewasanavidstudentofbooksand, withthefreerunofDr.VanVliet'slibrary,heshowedeveninthoseearlydaysaspecialpreferenceforancient GreekandRomanhistory.Theideal oftheancientGreeks "asound mindinasoundbody,"wassowell implantedinhismindthatitprobably influencedhiswholecareer;hisentry intotheringaswellastheotheraspectsofhislife.

Hequotedthatidealtotheyouthof NewZealandinthecourseofatalk toAucklandboys,andtold,too,ofthe classicistsoftheMiddleAgeswho addedtothatidealthenecessityfor "spirit'aswell."Courageisthe noblestqualityofall,"hetoldthem and,fromhisownexperience,showed howthatqualitywasdevelopedand howitcouldturndefeatintovictory.

Forthemanwhowouldmakegood intheprofessionalboxingringitwas anessential.Hehadtolearn"tolick himself,"tocarryonfightingwhendefeatseemedinevitable.Andinthe veryfactofcarryingonheacquired 'thequalitythatwouldeventually makehimthemaster.

Itwasinhisfirstmatchwiththat grandscrapper,HarryGreb,lightheavyweightchampionofAmerica, thatTunneybecamethemanwho wouldinevitablywintheheavyweight championshipoftheworld.Grebwas atgoodasany,andbetterthanmost ofthetop-flightprofessionals,andhe gaveTunneytheworsthidingofhis career.

Fromthefirstfewsecondshisnose bledinwardly.Inthethirdroundan eyewascutopen.Inthefifthboth eyeswerepouringblood.Hesaw Grebthroughahaze-"adancing shadow."Buthecarriedontothe fifteenth,andGrebcouldnotK.O. him.Withhiscontusionshecarried fromthatmatchtheconvictionthathe coulddefeatGreb,andtheknowledge, too,oftheultimatethathisbody couldendureinthewayofpunish. ment.

YOUhave.afeelingasyoufaceGene Tunneythatnothingcoulddefeathim. Themasterythathehasofhimselfradiatesfromhim.HarryGrebmust havefeltthatmastery-andJack Dempseyalso.Andyet,Tunneyadmitsfranklytheneedofguidancefrom ahigherauthorityinmattersofconscience,thenecessityforfaithinthe SupremeBeing.

Ithasbeensaidofhimthat"althoughGenehasneverbeenknown totalkaboutit,itisplaintheladwas headedforthepriesthood."Inthat interviewbeforeheleftNewZeaalnd Tunneyadmittedthatitwouldhave gratifiedhismother'sdearestwishif hehadenteredthepriesthood."But," headded."theolderIgetthemoreI realiseIneverhadavocation.Ithink therecanbenothingmorebeautiful intheworldthantohavethatfeeling ofvocation,butI,honestly,didnot."

Thepenitentialpracticesoffastandabstinenceduringthe LentenSeasonaredesignedtotrainthesoultovirtueandholiness oflifebydestroyingsin,theonemortaldiseaseofthesoul,byimpellingittorepentanceandtotheuseofthosemeansofforgivenesswhichChristhasentrustedtoHisChurch.Mortification evenanticipatessinbydealingwithtemptationstosin.against whichitstrengthensthesoulbyinducingittoaccepthardships, howeversevere,ratherthanyieldtothetemptation.Hence,mortification,thoughfromonestandpointalawof.death,accordingto itsderivation,isultimatelyandfundamentallyalawoflife,elevatingandnotdestroyingnature.St.Patilhadthisinmindwhen hewrotetotheRomans:"IfyouliveaccordingJothefleshyou shalldie;butif,bytheSpirit,youmortifythedeedsoftheflesh,you shalllive."Mortificationis,then,tohepractisedinthebestinterestsofthesoul,forbydestroyingthediseaseofthesoul,itrestoresandinvigoratesitstruelife.

Haugh(SuperioroftheOblate Fathers),andRev.Father'sMcGillicuddy,M.Reidy,J.Lynch,T.Conway, O.M.I.,D.BreslinandE.McQuinn, O.M.I.,werepresentinthesanctuary.

MissLeonieChidlow,ofNortham, receivedtheHolyHabit,andthe nameofSisterMaryLeonide.

AttheconclusionofHolyMass, Rev.FatherBreslin,0.M.I.,preached anappropriatesermon,takingashis text:"ThatyouwalkworthyofGod, inallthingspleasing;beingfruitfulin everygoodworkandincreasinginthe knowledgeofGod."(Col.1,10.)St. Paul,saidthepreacher,hadbeautifullysummedupthepurposeofthereligiouslifeinthattext.Thatwaswhy thenewly-receivedSisterwouldstrive topleaseGodineverything,andtoincreaseintheknowledgeofGod;because,increasingintheknowledgeof Godwouldmeanincreasinginthelove ofGod.Thedifferencebetweenour experienceofearthlythingsandour experienceofspiritualthingswasthat themoreweknewofearthlythings themorewetiredofthem.Onthe contrary,themoreweknewJesus ChristthemorewelovedHim.If peopledidnotloveHimitwassimply becausetheydidnotknowHim.

TheSisterthatmorningbeganthe periodinherlifeknownastheNovitiate.ItwasatestingtimeappointedbyourHolyMotherChurch;everyonewasnotsuitedtothecloister. "Manyarecalledbutfewarechosen," andtheChurchwasveryparticular whomsheadmittedtothereligious life.Thatwaswhyshehadsetaside thatspecialtrainingandtestingperiod.

TheywouldnoticethattheSisters' habitswereblack,signifyingdeath.A religiouswasonewhowasdeadtothe world,deadtoself;puttingitonevery daywouldbeadailyreminderthat thepresentfleetingexistencewasnot toberegardedasourtruelifebutasa merepreparationforthegloriousand never-endinglifethatwouldbeours hereafter.Theymustbedeadto everythingtheworldprized;thespirit oftheworldwasopposedtothespirit ofGod.St.Paulremindedusthat

"thewisdomofmanisfoolishness," withGodandthethingsthatthe worldapplaudsGodcondemns.The worldworshipswealth,honour,birth, talentsandgreatintelligence,butGod, whoseopinionalonematters.prizes virtue.OurDivineRedeemerhas promisedtothosewhofollowHima hundredfoldherebelowandeternal lifehereafter.Hehadlaiddownhis conditions;thereligiousmustleaveall thefollowHim-notonlythefriends whohadcometoseethatceremony, notonlytheparentsandcompanions ofherchildhood,butshemustleave herownwill,herownopinion,and thatwouldbethehardestofall.That waswhytheypromisedtoprayto Godthatshemightaccomplishthat duringherNovitiate,sothatshe mightpractiseiteverafterwards. Thereweretwovirtuesthatcharacterisedagoodnovice,obedienceandhumility.Obedienceforthereligious wouldbethewaytoLove,forthetest ofherloveforGodwouldhethemannerinwhichshekepttheRule.

TheparentsandfriendsofareligiousshowedtheirloveforGodbykeepingHisCommandmentsandthePreceptsoftheChurch;inadditionareligiouskeptthethreevows.She wouldshowherlovebyobedienceand humility.Thesewerethestrongcornerstonesofthereligiousedificeshe musterectduringthenoviceship.It wouldbedifficult;theReligiousLife wasnotabedofroses;apoethas said,"Godmadearosetoadorna thorn"-inthatsenseitwasabedof roses,becausethethornswereplentiful.ShewouldfindthattheCross weighedheavily,buthowill-fittingfor onewhoprotestedtofollowacrucified RedeemernevertohavesharedHis Crucifixion!Shehopedtobethe SpouseoftheManofSorrows,surely shemustwishtobeabletosay,"Iam likeYounotonlyinmychoiceoflife; butinsuffering."

DuringHolyMasswhichHisGrace hasjustcelebrated,continuedFather Breslin,hesaidinthePreface,"SursumCorda;"-"Liftupyourhearts!" Thatiswhatwesaytoyou;donot worryaboutthetrialsanddiscomforts,butputyourtrustinGod,He hasbroughtyousofar;ifyouclingto Him,putyourfaithinHim,ifyou putyourhandinHis,Hewillgiveyou thegracetogoforwardgenerouslyand perseveringly,andweshalllivetosee thegreatdaywhenyoutaketheirrevocablestep,thatofyourFinalProfession.

Thesimpleyetimpressiveceremony wasbroughttoaclosebyBenediction oftheBlessedSacrament,during whichtheTeDeumwassung.

AftertheceremonyHisGrace,the priestS,relativeandnumerousfriends oftheyoungNoviceweretheguests ofRev.MotherRegional,Rev.Mother, andtheSistersofSaintJosephofthe Apparition.

TheEffectsofthe SacramentsofPenance

I.-Whenapenitent,withduedispositions,confessesmortalsinscommittedafterBaptism,nothitherto sacramentallyforgiventhen,bythe SacramentofPenance:

(a)hisSupernaturalLifeisrestoredandhissinanditseternal punishmentareremitted;

(b)thetemporalpunishmentdue tohissinsisatleastpartiallyremitted; (c)hispreviously-acquiredmerits -whichwereannulledbyhismortal sins-arerestored:thatis,beregainshisrighttoeternalrewardina degreeproportionatetohisprevious merits.

(d)aspecialactualgraceisgiven toenablehimtoavoidsininthe futureandtolivevirtuously.

II.-Ifapenitenthasonlyvenial sinstoconfessormortalsinsalready

sacramentallyremitted,thenthe ecectsofthereceptionoftheSacramentofPenanceare:

(a)theremissionofallvenialsins forwhichheistrulysorry;

(b)anincreaseofsanctifying grace;

(c)aremission-atleastpartialofanytemporalpunishmentwhich maybedueonaccountofhissins;

(d)aspecialactualgracetoavoid ininthefutureandtolivevirtuously. ThevalueoffrequentConfessionis abundantlyclearfromthisenumeration.Ifapersonshouldhavehad themisfortuneoffallingintomortal sin,prudencedemandsthathebe reconciledtoGodassoonaspossible: Nobodyhasaleaseoflife-"weknow notthedayorthehour'ofoursummonsbeforetheJudgmentseat.Frequentconfessionmaybeurgently necessaryifapersonbeingravedangeroffallingintoserioussin,whether byreasonofhisownfrailtyorbyreasonofthespecialoccasionsofsinin whichhemayfindhimself.Aswe notedabove,theSacramentofPenancegivesaspecialgracetoenableus toovercometemptations.Instances ariseinwhichfrequentreecptionof theSacramentistheonlymethod wherebypeoplemayrisesuperiorto temptationsoccasionedbytheirenvironmentormaycastofftheshacklesof viceinductedbydeep-seatedbad habits.

Apartfromthequestionofgravesin orserioustemptation,frequentreceptionoftheSacramentismostdesirableforthosewhodesiretoadvance invirtue.EachreceptionoftheSacramentbringsanincreaseinSanctifyinggrace.Theresultsofthisare manifold:(a)onebecomesmoredear toGodand,consequently,entitledto amoreperfectparticipationinthejoys

ofEternalLife;(b)everygoodact.. becausedonebyapersonmoredear toGod,becomesofgreatermeritorious valueand,so,thetempoofincreaseof one'smeritisconstantlysteppedup; (c)actualgracesaregivenmorefreelyandmoreefficaciously,sothatincreasinglyitbecomeseasiertoavoid sinandtodogoodandmeritorious acts.

(b)Inaddition,ourdebtoftemporalpunishmentisreducedorwiped outsothat,whenonedies,one'stime inPurgatoryiscorrespondinglyshortened.

(c)Finaly,thereisthespecialactual gracewhichistheparticularcharacteristicoftheSacrament.Thisoperates,firstly,byenlighteningourminds sothatwemorereadilyperceivewhat istherightcourseofactiontopursue inthedevelopmentofourspiritual livesandwhatarethebestmeansto usetoaccomplishourpurpose,and, secondly,bystrengtheningourwillsso thatweintenselydesiretoaccomplisb thatwhich'weperceivetobegoodfor usandsothatwecanreadilycarry outthenecessaryactioninorderto thatend.Itistobenotedthatevery sinfulactmakesthecommissionofthe samesinmuchmorelikelyinthe future;ourpsychologicaldefencesare, infact,increasinglyweakenedbyeach suchact.Theactualgracereceived intheSacramentofPenancesupernaturallystrengthensournaturallyweakeneddefences.
