Puzzled,StirlingHighway,Cottesloe:

Q.:Iamaregularlistenertoyoursessionsandanon-CatholicveryhappilymarriedtoaCatholic;thisletter isoccasionedbyafeatureinarecent issueoftheperiodical,"Piz."

A.:FormypartIamveryhappyto knowthatyouarcaregularlistener tothesession, andalsothatyouhave thoughtitworthwhiletobringupfor discussionthequestionthatyoudo, foritmighthavestruckotherreaders ofthismagazinethatthereweresomethingofananomalyaboutthemarriageofCarolLandis.

Q.:Ihadalwaysunderstoodthatthe marriagebetweenaCatholicanda non-Catholiccouldnotbeperformed intheChurchproperbeforethealtar, butonlyinthepresbyteryorsacristy.Ibelievethatuntilsomefour yearsagosuchmarriagescouldbe performedataside-altarinthe church,butthatconcessionisnow disallowed.

A.:Yes,thatisallquitetrue.Until aboutfouryearsagoaconcessionwas oftenallowedinAustraliaformixed marriagestobecelebratedbeforea tside-altar,butfrom1939onwardsthat privilegehasbeendisallowed,andall suchmarriagesmustnowbecelebrated inthesacristyorpresbytery,aslaid downinthecodeofCanonLaw.One reasonforthisregulationwithregard totheplacewherethemarriageisperformedisthatthewholeceremonyis consideredaprivateandnotapublic oneintheeyesoftheChurch.Furthermore,the131essedSacramentisusuallyreservedinthetabernacleonthe altarofaCatholicChurch;itishardly fitting,then,thattheceremonyshould beperformedinthepresenceofthe BlessedSacramentwhenoneofthe principalpartiesdoesnotbelievein thedoctrineoftheRealPresence,does notbelieve,inotherwords,thatChrist isactuallypresentintheHostreservedinthetabernacleonthealtar.Out ofsimplereverencefortheBlessedSacramentitismorefittingthatsucha marriageshouldbecelebratedelsewhere.

AlthoughthelawoftheChurchprohibitsmixedmarriagesbeingcelebrat-

Naturally, theBishopsdonotmake suchdecisionswithouthavinggiven thematterdeepconsiderationfrom everypointofview.Itisaquestion whichtheyrealiseisboundtoaffect many, manyCatholics, andifforthat reasonaloneonecanrestassuredthat suchadecisionwithallitspossibleconsequenceswascarefullyweighedbefore beingpromulgated.

Q.:Iamenclosingacuttingfromthe before-mentionedperiodical("Pie), fromwhichyouwillseethatthe marriageofthefilmstar,CarolLandis(twicedivorced,andherselfa Catholic)wasapparentlyperformed intheCatholicChurchbeforethe altar,herhusbandbeinganonCatholic.

Thefactmustbehonestlyfacedthat menawayfromhomeandengagedin warfarehaveneverbeennotoriousfor asenseofresponsibilityinsexrelations, andthereisabundantevidence thatmanyofthesemarriagesareundertakenbythemenconcernedwithouttheslightestintentionofhonouringthecovenantsenteredinto, but merelyforthesakeofovercomingthe objectionsofthemorescrupuloustype ofgirltotemporaryconnections.
