EightBishopsandnearly500Priests andNuns,ofwhom100areAmericans, areamongthe1,800AlliednationalsinternedbytheJapaneseinWeibsien, NorthChina.

InaradioreporttotheUnited States,FatherJ.F.Smith,aMaryknollPriestnowinChungking,gives agraphicaccountoftheinternment campwhereabout300Massesarecelebratedeveryday.

"Followingtheoutbreakofwar," saysFatherSmith,"theAmericansand otherAlliednationalsinNorthChina wereallowedpartialfreedom.Several monthsagotheJapaneseannounced that,inordertoforestallenemyespionageandtostabiliselivingconditions, allAmericans,British,DutchandBelgianswouldbeinterned.Thatprocesshasnowbeencompleted."

Sixty-tworedbrickbuildings,formerlytheUniversityoftheUnited ChurchofCanada,formtheinternment camp.Livingconditionsaregood, butallmenarerequiredtodofour hoursofmanuallabourdaily.The Sistersarenotcompelledtowork,but havetakenoverthekitchens,andthey seethatallreceivethemaximumbenefitofrationedsupplies.Theyhave alsoopenedschoolsforthechildren. Fifteendoctors,mostlyProtestant missionaries,havecareofthehealthof theinmates.

"TheBishopsweregivenaroomfor themselves;thePriestsliveincommonrooms.Aspecialconcessionwas madetothereligioussocieties,and,as faraspossible,theyareallowedto livetogetherandcarryouttheircommonrule.TheBishopsandPriests mayofferMassdailyiftheyareable todoso."

OnePriestwhocomplainedofhis treatmentbytheJapanesewassentto livewiththeinternedTrappists,whose membersobserveperpetualsilence.

"ThemindsofallthePriestsand Sisters,"saysthereport,"arefilled withlongingandapprehensionfor theirChristianspreadovervastspaces ofNorthChina.Theyfeelthatthey shouldbewiththem-caringfortheir needs,solvingtheirdifficulties,consolingthemintheirsorrows.Instead theyfindthemselvesofnousetoanyone,forcedtoleadalifeofintellectual stagnationforthedurationofthewar.

"ThePriestsandSistersaregrieved bythetragedythatfollowedtheirinternment.Theirgreatworksof mercy-oldfolks'homes,homesforthe blind,orphanages,hospitals,schools, dispensaries-areallclosed,andthe poorandhelplesshavebeenthrown intotheworldtostarve.Reports acomeintotheMaryknollhousein Chungkingtellingofbandsofchildren whoroamthecountrysideinsearchof food;whentheycannotbegit,they stealit."

Althoughtherearepeopleinseveral countrieswhostilllongforthearbitramentofthesword,andtheusualtalk of"thenextwar"isheardintheland, thereis(accordingtoalearnedwriter,DonSturzcOnothinginhuman naturetorenderthisscourgeeternally necessary.War,likeslavery,polygamyandprivatevendetta,isthechild ofaparticularformofpoliticaland socialorganisation,andwiththeadvanceofcivilisationbecomesoutof date.

DonSturzo,whohaswrittenmany worksonsocialandpoliticaltopics, discussesinhisbook,"TheInternationalCommunityandtheRightof War,"theeliminationofwarinitshistorical,sociological,legalandethical aspects.

Theauthor'sconceptionofsociety isorganic,notstatic.Heisconvincedthatmankind,whichhaschanged somuchandadvancedsofar,willcontinuetochangeandadvance.Our ancestorscouldnotforeseetheemergenceofsocialandpoliticalrelations whicharetheaxiomsofto-day,and manyofourfellow-citizensofthepresenttimeareequallyunabletoimagineaworlddifferinggreatlyfromour own.

Civilisationasweknowithasbeen builtuproundthetwofundamental institutionsofthefamilyandtheState, andtheauthorslooksforwardtoa third,theInternationalCommunity, withanorganisationandapolicyof itsown.ForthesovereignStateis notenough,sinceitnolongerfulfils thelegitimatedemandofitscitizens forwell-beingandsecurity.Thereis asturdyindividualisminthespirited pagesofthisbook."TheStateisnot theendofthecitizens,butthecitizens aretheendoftheState,andthefount oflawisnottheStatebutpersonality."

Historyistherecordoftheefforts ofmankindtosatisfyitsgrowingneeds andtoembodyitsidealsininstitu-

tionalforms.Theauthor'sreligious convictionsreinforcethelessonofhistory,forheseesintheInternational Communityanexpressionofthespirit ofChristianity.

DonSturzoshowsnodispositionto minimisethedimensionsofthepolitical,economicandpsychologicalobstaclestotheeliminationofwarasa legalinstitution.ThemapofEurope andtheworldisfullofroughedges, somecreatedbytreatieswhichended theGreatWar,otherssurvivingfrom anearliertime.Theoldconception oftheself-sufficientsovereignState stillcumberstheearth.Largearmamentsremain,atonceasymbolanda causeofinsecurity,Conscriptionstill suppliescannon-fodderbyautomatic process.

Facedwithsuchdifficulties,theauthorderivesencouragementfromthe triumphsofthepast.Theidealist needsinexhaustiblepatiencenoless thanindestructiblefaith.Theseeds ofthemovementfortheabolitionof slavery,whichweresownwhenChristianityenteredtheworld,haveripened inourownera.Pioneersconvertthe societiesofwhichtheyaremembers, andthemoreadvancedcommunities serveasmodelsfortherest.

Wemaystillhavetowaitfor"the internationalsolidarityofinter-dependentStates,"whichwilleliminatewar asithasbeeneliminatedwithinthe BritishEmpireandtheUnitedStates. Butthebandsoftheclockcannotbe putbackto1914.

"Whatevertheoscillationsofpolicies andofsingleStates,politicsarealreadycaughtintheinternationalmachine,andareeffectedbytheideal oftheabolitionofwar.Oncethe peopleshaveentertainedthisidealas somethingpossibleitcanneverfade fromtheirmindsandhearts."

Thewarhasgivenafillip,sometimes withgood,sometimeswithbadresults, toanoldcontroversy:Can"Christians"bereunited?says"TheCatholic Times"(London).Thecontroversy hasbeeninsomedegreevitiatedbecausedeeplyrootedprejudiceshave blurredwhatoughttobeaclearissue. Onthefaceofthematterandinsimplelogic,thereisno"problem"atall. IfcertainpeoplelefttheChurchto formsectsoftheirawn,theycanreturntotheChurchonconfessionand "detestation"(thatis,witnessing against)theirerror:andbehold!reunion.Butinourimperfecthuman naturetheveryprocessesofthought itselfaresubjecttoerror.Someof theseparatedgroupshavecanvassed thenotionofsomesortofostensible reunionconditionedbyaretentionof allthedifferencesindoctrineandin Faith.

BugbearForMany-

Thebugbearformanyisanyform ofdoctrinalauthority,asindeed shouldbethecaseinlogicifwerememberthatthewholeoriginofthe break-upofChristendomwastheLutheranrevoltagainsttheauthorityof thePope.Whiletherevoltlaststhe "splintering"ofsectswillbeacontinuingphenomenonoutsidetheChurch.

In"TheTimes"recently,however, continues"TheCatholicTimes,"aletterappearedoverthesignatureof theBishopofGloucester"ontheconditionswhichmaymakereunionpossible."Dr.Headlamroundlywarns thoseAnglicanswhotalkofunion that'onabasissuchastheysuggest noreunionwouldeverbepossible."He arguesineffectthatnoprogresscan bemadeinthisorinanyargument unlessonehonestlyandfearlessly facestherelevantfact.Hehasin mindthoseAnglicanswhobasetheir opinionsonavirtualdenialofthe patentfactthatschismdicltake placeattheReformation;anddeclare thattheydidnot"leave"theChurch, andthatreunioncantakeplacewithout,asDr.Hearilamsays,"theacceptan,-eofalldoctrinalopinionsorof allsacramentalorliturgicalpractices."

TheTenCommandmentscontainthe fundamentalobligationsofreligionand morality,andembodytherevealedexpressionoftheCreator'swillinregard toman'swholedutytoGod,tohimselfandtohisfellow-creatures.They arerecordedtwiceintheOldTestamentandweregivenbyGodtoMoses onMountSinai.TheNewDispensationinauguratedbyOurLorddidnot mitigatetheobligationsoftheDecalogue,butratherincreasedthem. ForasHesaidHimself:"Iamnot cometodestroytheLawandtheProphets,buttofulfil(i.e.,toperfect) them."Christsummedupthewhole teachingoftheDecalogueinthedoublepreceptofcharity-loveofGodand Ofourneighbour-whichHeproclaimedasbindingalsointheNewLaw.

Itseemsstrangethat,to-daywhen effortstoprovideever-increasingeducationfacilitiesarebeingcarriedto apitchvergingonmania,noeffortis beingmadetoextendtomankindthe Eiostelementaltruthsabouthisorigin,nature,destinyandthemeaning oflife-inaword,hisrelationshipto God.

Yetthefirstandforemostoftherelationsofhumanlifeisunquestionably thatwhichmanbearstowardshisCreator.Noeducationprocesscanthereforebeconsideredsoundwhichdoes notaimchieflyatguidingamanin thepathofreligiousduty.Andhow canamanfullyacquithimselfofhis paramountdutyunlesshismindbe properlyinstructedastoitsrequirements?ItistheChurch'smissionto helpmanfulfiltheDivineWillbymakingknowntohimtheteaching,laws anddecreesoftheCatholicChurch.

Ithasbeenobjectedthatamore completeinstructioninthesematters isnotdesirable,sinceitcertainlyincreasesone'sresponsibilityandlimits one'slibertyofaction.Whilethisis true,ital,helpsonetoavoidgrave dangersintowhichmanyareled throughanignorancethatisanything butblissful.And,further,thedegree ofman'sultimateblissinthepossessionofGodmustnecessarilydepend uponthefulnessofhisserviceofHim onearth,andthemeasureofthatservicecannot,innormalcircumstances, exceedthemeasureofhisacquaint. ancewithitsobligations.Ignorance oftheDivineWill,therefore,signifies thereverseofbliss.Itmeanstheloss ofit-ifnotinsubstance,atleastin

Onthecontrary,nothingcanbe moreimportantthantohaveasthoroughaknowledgeaspossibleofthe Commandments,sincewithoutknowingthemwecannotwellkeepthem norgivesolidproofofourlovefor God.TheCommandmentsconstitute theoneuniversallawthathindsall menateverypointinhumanhistory. Ifonlytheywereobservedthatmilieu!umofwhichthepoetshavedreamed andtowardswhichreformershave striveninvain,wouldindeedberealisedonearth.

God'sWillformanwasnotfirst madeknownbytheTenCommandments.Itwasinherentinman'sconsciousnessfromthebeginning.Every rationalcreaturehasacertainlight fromGodwhichistotallydeficientin theloweranimals,acertainapprehensionofgoodandevilintheintellect, andacertainimpulsiontowardsmoral goodnessandrevulsionfromevil.This apprehensionisspontaneousandis antecedenttotheknowledgethat comesfromspecialrevelation,orinstruction,orhumanlaworcustom,althoughitfrequentlyworksinconjunctionwithoneortheother.,Itis knownastheNaturalMoralLaw,and assuchhasitsauthorityandforce fromGod,WhoistheAuthorof Nature.Itconstitutesanabsolute standard'ofmoralitywhichisalways andeverywhereidentical.Thefact thatmoralsandmannershavecertainlychangedinvarioustimesandplaces doesnotdisprovetheexistenceofthe MoralLaw,nordoesitgiveanysupporttothemodernpretensionsregardingtherelativityofmorals.Forthe strikinghistoricalfactisthatthese variationsdonotconcernprinciples butpractice.Whereverthewisestof anatureorculturehavesatdownto writeandteachaboutmoralsthereis aremarkableagreement.Inallthe greatphilosophiesthereisthesame pre-occupationwiththefundamental issuesofthenatureofGodandman andtherelationbetweenthem.They haveappreciatedthesameproblems andapproachedthesameanswers.The discrepanciesinconductcanbeexplainedvariously,butmostcommonly, perhaps,byman'stendencytomake hisphilosophyfitinwithhismodeof life.Wherethisisevil,thephilosophyissoonwatereddownandutterly distorted.

TheMoralLaw,then,existsinthe heartsofmenandismanifested throughthelightofreasonandthe voiceofconscience.Itisnot,however,thecreationofhumanthoughtor ofsociallegislationanditdoesnot dependmerelyoncustomandpopular opinion.Theconscienceofmankind, has,onthewhole,atrueinstinctthat prevailsinthelongrunagainstperversionofthemoralcode.Yetthemoral sensemayindeedbecomegenerallydepravedandtheremaybecurrentfashionsofwickednessandthesenseof shameinevil-doingmaybesuppressed. Butnohumanpower,howeverbroad itsinfluence,canturnwronginto rightorrightintowrong.

ThepurposeoftheMoralLaw,asof alllaw,istoregulateman'sactionsfor hisownandthecommongood.To

dothisitmustbeofthenatureofa commandenjoyingobedience,though# notforcingthewillintocompliance. Thisisthetruemeaningofliberty, whereinamanismasterofhisown timeandactionsasfarasmaybeconsistentwiththelawsofGod.Forthis reasonacowwillneverbebroughtbeforeaCourtofJusticetoanswera chargeoftrespass,noradogona chargeofassault.ManalonecanperceivetheexistenceoftheMoralLaw andacknowledgetheneedofabidingl byitindailylife.Notonlydoesit bindmanbythethreatofeternalpunishment,butitisessentialforthecommonwelfareofmaninsociety.Ifmen didnotrecognisethebindingforce ofthenaturalMoralLaw,thePolice ForceandtheCourtsofLawwouldbe inconsistenciesandsheercontradictions. Yetyoucannothaverealmorality withoutGodforitbecomesonlya kindofdeadreckoning.TheChurch insiststhatmorality,apartfromreel gion,isimpossibleofobservance.For theMoralLawhasitsultimateobligationinthewilloftheCreator,whichis imposeduponusasaduty,sothatits ultimatesanctionisthelossofGod whichitsviolationmustentail.Withoutreferencetoreligionmoralitywill missagreatdealintheidealtowhich humannaturepoints.Manwilldisregardsomeofhismostessentialduties, toGod,andhewilllackthestrong motivesforobediencetothelawaffordedbythetremendoussanctionattachingtoitsneglect.Experiencehas provedoverandoveragainthatman's nature,warpedbyOriginalSin,cannot reachevennaturalstandardsofmoralityunlessheleanscontinuallyon God.

ThisnaturalMoralLawcontained implicitlyinreasonandconscienceis madeexplicitintheTenCommandments.Theyaresocalledbecause` theyarenotmerelyexpressionsof God'swishesandpreferences.They embodyHisexpressorders,binding theconsciencesofmenunderpainof sin.HencetheynotonlyexpressverballytherequirementsoftheNatural Law,butinsomepointsdevelopand extendit.God'sWillinregardto man'sconductisgiveninfullerdetail, andinpointswhichhumanreason,left toitself,eithercouldnotascertainat all,orelsecouldonlyperceivevaguely. Evenso,theTenCommandmentsre-' quirealowerstandardofconductthan theChristianone.Hence,aChristianneedstohavethemexplainedto himintheirfulldevelopmentbythat ChurchwhichChristcommissionedto teachallnations.TheFifthandSixth Commandmentsareexcellentexamples ofthis,inthatthelawofGodisshown toentertheinmostheartofmanas wellastogovernhisoutwardconduct.

ThetenpreceptsoftheDecaloguedeal withmaninhisthreefoldrelation-(1), toGod.(2),tohisneighbour:(3),to himself.So,thefirstthreeCommandmentsregulateourmoreimmediate dutiestowardsGod-worship,reverence,obedience,etc.Theremaining sevenmainlyconcernman'sdutiesto hisfellow-men.Buttheyincludealso man'sdutiestowardshimself.Thus' suicideandself-injury,etc.,areforbidden.IngeneraltheCommandments regulateman'sthoughts,deiires,words, deedsandomissions.

Whileshewouldhaveherchildren respectthereligiousconvictionsof others,andrefrainfrompassingjudgmentontheirpersonalsincerityand goodfaith,shedoesnotpermitthem tojoininanyworshipalienfromher own,ortoactinsocialrelationsina mannertosuggestthat"onereligion isasgoodasanother."

Christ'slawisconsequentlyquite definiteandclear.Inowrequoteit. "Itisinnomannerlawfulforthe faithful,inanyway,toassistactively at,ortakepartin,thereligiousservicesofnon-Catholics.Passiveor merelybodilypresenceatfunerals, marriages,andsuch-likesolemnitiesof non-Catholicsmaybetoleratedfora gravereason(whichincaseofdoubt mustbeapprovedbytheBishop)asa matterofcivildutyorrespect:providedthereisnodangerofperversion orscandal."(CanonLaw,No.1258.)

Thisrulequiteclearlyforbidsparticipationinheathenorsuperstitious practicesofanykind;butalsoinany so-calledinterdenominationalChristianservices,whetherinoroutof Churchbuildings,aswellasinthe mimicritesofthose,who,adopting moreorlessthelanguageandterminologyoftheChurchandcopyingher ceremonial,wouldleadtheuncritical andignoranttothinktheseservices reallyCatholicandvalid.

Thepressreportsoftheproceedings oftheAustralianWomen'sConference inSydney(underthechairmanshipof Mrs.JessieStreet)madeunpleasant readinginseveralrespects,andaresuggesi,veofsomeofthemorerepulsive featuresofSovietsocialorganisationso sadlyapedbycertain"ModernWomen'sClubs"inthiscountry.A lengthypreambletothe"Women's Charter"proteststhatwomenare "stillsubmittedtomanydiscriminationsandlimitationsonaccountof ttheirsex,andarenotaccordedthe samestatus,opportunities,responsibilitiesandrewardsasareaccordedto meninthecommunity."Now,what wouldyou?Thismodern,liberaland Communisticconceptionofthesocial functionofwomenfindsnosympatheticresponseintheChristianconscience. Andindeedonpurelyrational groundsitisindefensible.Thestark factisthatmenandwomenarenot equalandthat,despitecertaindegenerate,externalimitationsonthepart ofaminorityof"moderns,"manand womanarecomplementaryintheir functions,bothphysicalandspiritual-afacttowhichtheinstitutionofmarriageandtheclaimsofthefamilyas thecellofsociety,bearamplewitness.

The"equalityofthesexes"isaparrotcryofintolerablenonsense.If anylogicinitwomenshould bewillingnotonlytoenterthewhitecollarprofessions,buttotaketheir placeamongtheroad-makers,theengine-drivers,thetimberhewersand therestoftheheavyandunskilled labourmarket.Thishasbeenattemptedinpartsoftheworld,butweinAustraliadonotfancyourmother,wives, sistersandsweetheartsbeingreduced tosuchaservileandunnaturalstatus.

Tothe"moderns"thismayrepresent "emancipation,"buttotheChristianit issimplyavoluntaryreturntothat conditionofslaveryfromwhichChristianityrescuedwomankind.

AnotherresolutionurgesthepaymentbytheCommonwealthof30s.a weekasapersonalendowmentto mothers,andthereasongivenisthat "adependenteconomicstatusdenies libertyandopportolnityandjusticeto thehome-makerandeconomicindependencestrengthencharacter."Well, well!Theoldideawasthatthedesireforeconomicsecuritywasapowerfulmotiveforwomentomarry,and thisisaprincipleembodiedinour laws-thatawomaniseconomically dependentonherhusbandandthathe isboundtomaintainherdecently.But theWomen'sConference,withmasterfullogic,believesthatthedependence inmarriageisservile,restrictiveand unjust,whilerelianceonStatecharity providedbythetaxpayersrepresents liberty,opportunityandjustice!There eisfurthernonseneaboutmothersbeing giventheopportunityfor"creative work."InmysimplicityIwould havethoughtthatmotherhooditself wasthepeakofcreativework,not onlyinthebringingofnewlifeinto theworld,butinthebeautifullyskilledanddelicatetaskofrearingthe childandformingitscharactertobe agoodChristianandagoodcitizen.

Butmodernwomenaresoprogressive.Theyviewtheirownkind,apparently,purelyasabiologicalmechanismwhosetaskisfinishedwiththe deliveryofachild.Itmaythensafelybehandedovertohospitalisation, theStatecreche,theStatekindergarten,theStateschool,andtheireither theStateCivilServiceortheState

TheCatholicviewpointconcerning ourpopulationproblemanditssolutionhasrecentlyreceivedwelcome supportinapamphleton"TheFuture ofAustralia'sPopulation,"writtenby theeminentSirJamesBarrett,and printedbyJ.C.StephensPty.In hisstudyofthequestion,SirJames producesstatisticswhichshowthat, eveninthelastpartofthenineteenth century,thegreatestdropinbirth-rate inalmostanypartoftheworldwasin theStateofVictoria,wherethefigures perthousandfellfrom42.81in1860to 25,72in1898,therebeingadropof eightpointsinthelasteightyears.

Healsohassomeinterestingfactsto givewithregardtothesupposedeffect oftropicalheatonthevitalityof whitepeople,andonthedangerof malaria,whichhasbeenasubjectof somealarm,inviewofthelargenumberofcasesresultingfromtheNew Guineawar.SirJamesbelieves,on thewhole,thatAustraliawillnotbecomemalaria-ridden,becauseofthe prevailingdryness,though"ajamtin ofwaterisquitesufficienttocause anoutbreak."Astovitalityintropicalregions,hefindsthatthebirthrateinNorthernQueenslandishigher thaninourgreatcitiesandthedeathratelower-thenetpopulationbeing greatereventhanthatoftherural areasasawhole.Thisoughttodisposeoftheviewthatthisregionof ourcontinentisunfitforwhitesettlementonalargescale.

Inhiscomparisonofcountryand cityinAustralia,ourwriterquotesa relevantpassagefrom"Patternfor Peace,"inwhichitisshownthat"the onlypermanentsocialbasisofanincreasingpopulationistheruralsection ofthecommunity."Heconcludesasdotheauthorsofthe"Pattern"-in favourofthenecessityofdecentralisation;buthebelievesthat,"unlessthe movefordecentralisationisgenuine anddetermined,andundertakenbya propersurveyauthority,itwillremainsimplyapoliticalcatchword,"He holdsthewayouttobe"acombinationofcountrybodies,whoknowtheir wantsandwhoknowwhatoughtto bedone,"emphasisingespeciallythe importanceofcontrollingrailwayrates, whichwouldhaveadecisiveeffect,for ins!ance,inthedevelopmentoflesser parts,suchasPortland.

Lastnightsevenofusattended HighMassandBenedictionoveratan AmericanCamp.Itstartedabout7 p.m.,andtherewereseveralthousand present.Thealtarwasatthetopend ofabighut,undertheonlypartof theroofthatwasthatched,andas therewasnotroominsideformostof thechaps,themajorityofthemwere kneelingoutinthemud-including yourstruly.

TheMasswascelebratedbytheSeniorAmericanChaplain,assistedby threeorfourothers,bothAustralian andAmerican.AnAmericanguard ofhonour,withfixedbayonets,was standingoneithersideofthealtar,and theypresentedarmsattheConsecration.

Therewasachoirofabouttenwho sangtheLatinresponses,andasamicrophoneandloudspeakershadbeen installed,everybodywasabletohear thechants.JustbeforetheConsecrationasoloistsangseveralLatinhymns, andyoucouldhaveheardapindropifitwasn'tforthemud-whilehewas singing.

AfterMassanotherAmericanchaplaingaveaverygoodsermon,which wasfollowedbyBenediction.The wholecrowdsangthe"0Salutaris" and"TantumErgo,"aswellasseveral hymnsinEnglishattheconclusion.

Throughoutthewholeceremonyit wasveryimpressive,andI'mpleased thatIwasabletogo.

NewsofPortugalwasconveyedto averyappreciativeaudienceatthe CentralCatholicLibraryonMonday night,November15,whenRev.Father O'Farrellgaveamostenlighteningtalk onthatland.

CompelledtospendsometimeinLisbonenroutetoLondonfromRome, thespeakerwasthusabletoimpart vividimpressionsofPortugalunder warconditions,thecapitalhavingbecomeahotbed,ofintrigueandthe thehavenofspiesandagentsofevery belligerentcountry.

Atthattime(1941)Nazimightwas drivingpeoplefromthesmallercountriestoseekrefugeinneutralterritory.Theatmospherewasfraught withsuspicionandanxiety.Recollectionsofthesedaysincludedmany amusingexperiences,nevertheless,misgivingsandlanguageandtransport difficultieswerethebaulkofevery traveller,andthevariousLegations hadsomeembarrassingmomentsendeavouringtopacifytheirnationals, whowereclamouringforaccommodationontheonlytwoavailableplanesonewithacapacityof56andtheother 12-whichleftLisbonforLondon daily.Theformerplanehadtheunpardonablehabitofreturningtothe airportwithinanhourortwoanddepositingitspassengersonPortuguese soilagain,'withouthavingeasedthe refugeejamatall.Justalittleenginetrouble.Pitytheoldladywho hadfivetimes"takenoff"andarrived backagain!

However,betweeneffortstoimpress Portugeseofficialdomwiththeurgency ofone'scase,therewastime theopportunityofseeingsomeofthe placesofCatholicandhistoricinterest forwhichPortugalisfamous.Father O'FarrellandhisfellowpriestsexploredtheenvironsofLisbonandwent farintothecountryinsearchofsome oftheincomparablewonderswhich heavenhasbestowedonthatdistant corneroftheContinent.

Becauseofitsveryrecentoccurrence,themiracleofFatimawaslistenedtoavidly:IthappenedonMay 13,1917.whilstthethreechildrenconcernedweretendingsheeponthehillside,Lucia,FrancescoandGiacinta. OurLadyappearedtothemandmade itplainthatshewasnotverypleased withtheirhabitofrecitingtheRosary, fortheyhadmadeitapracticetodo thisduringtheirwatch,theirdecade consistingofonePaterandoneAve; andshedisclosedonthis,thefirstapparition,thatshewouldcomeagain onthe13th.ofthemonthandthat they,incommonwiththerestofPortugal,mustsufferanddopenancefor theirreligionthathadsweptoverthe landtearingthepeopleawayfromthe ancientpracticeoftheirfaith.

Thechildren'sstoryevokedtheire oftheirparents,andalthoughtheparishpriestlistenedtothemwithsympathy,therewasanunderstandable doubtinhismindabuttheextraordinaryhappening.

Worriedovertheincredulityof everyoneanddistressedattheirparentsharshness,thechildrenaskedtheir HeavenlyMotheronthenextoccasion togivethemasign.ThisshepromisedtodointhefollowingOctober.So ithappenedthatonthe13th.dayof eachmonthuntilthemonthofthe HolyRosary,thelittleshepherdsof Fatimaenjoyedthisremarkableprivilege,andwhenthetimearrivedforthe promisedsign,nolessthan75,000personsassembledtoawaitthefulfilment.

Ittookthe'formofarevolvingofthe sunatsuchaspeedthatlightsof manyhueswereseentoflyaboutit. Thespeakerhadmetmanypeople whilstinPortugalwhohadwitnessed thephenomenon.Itsilencedatonce thederogatorypressandthedoubts offriendsaboutthestoryofthechildren,whichhadbythattimebecome widelyknown.

Theexecutiveandtheladiesofthe parish,whocometoourassistance everyyear,overcamethedifficulties ofthetimesandanappetisingrepast wasprovidedinmostattractivestyle tothehundredguestsandmembers whowerepresent.Whenhungerhad beensatisfiedandthirstquenchedall reclinedateaseandlistenedtoanumberofmostinterestingaddresses.

Theproceedingswereopenedbya speechofwelcometothemanyvisitorsbythePresident(Mr.E.Grant). AmessagefromHisGraceArchbishop Prendivillewasdelivered,inwhich HisGraceregrettedhisinabilitytobe present,butsenthisblessingandbest wishestotheHolyNameBranch.Wel%comewasextendedtoRev.Father Baragry,M.S.C.(Chaplain),toRev. FatherKelly,C.SS.R.(Chaplain),to Rev.FatherLinnane(C.underdin),to Rev.FatherDiviney(Northern),to Messrs.Farmer(GeneralSecretary) andMorgan(GeneralTreasurer),of theDiocesanUnion,to.Mr.Lennard, oftheClaremontBranch,toMr.L. Atkins(ShentonPark),totherepresentativesofSouthernBrook,Goomailing,andToodyay,andtheofficers andmenfromthemilitarycamps.Duringhisopeningaddress,thePresident expressedhisprideandsatisfaction thattheeffortsofallhadbeencrowned withsuccess,andhopedtheprinciples oftheSocietywouldpermeatesociety.

Rev.FatherLynch,theSpiritual Director,thankedtheexecutivefor itseffortsduring1943,andthemembersoftheDiocesanUnionforthis latestevidenceoftheirinterestinthe Ni,rthainBranch.Thespeakerrecommendedtoalltheideaofnewrecruitsannuallytotheexecutive,so thatworkandresponsibilityandinterestmightbemoreevenlydistributed. Passingfrommattersoflocalinterest, FatherLynchstressedthenecessity forCatholicstobandthemselvestogethertofightthespiritofmaterialismandpaganism.IntheHolyName SocietythecreamoftheCatholiclaity wasservingunderasacredstandard andunderaKingWhoisChristHim141self,andtheservicegivenshouldbe worthyofthestandardandtheKing. ToservewelltheCatholicmustbe wellinformedonmattersofdoctrine andofeconomicprinciples,andtothe achievementofthisendtheSpiritual Directorrecommendedstudycircles, oneofwhichhasdonemuchforthe nineortenmemberswhohavesoregularlyattendedtheweeklymeetingsof 1943. Inconclusion,FatherLynch exhortedtheyoungermentoprepare themselvesnowbytheregularpracticeoffaithandbystudyofCatholic principlestotaketheirpartinfashioningthenewworld.

Mr.Farmer,SecretaryoftheDiocesanUnion,extended,onbehalfof theUnion,itsgoodwishesandcongratulationstotheNorthamBranch, whichwaslookeduponasoneofthe mostprogressivebranchesinW.A.To thelocalsecretary(Mr.W.Byrne)he extendedhispersonalthanksforthe monthlyreports,soconciseandso punctual.Theideaofassociatingthe boysoftheparishwiththeCommunionbreakfastrecommendeditselfto himverymuch.

Mr.Morgan,Treasurer,Diocesan Union,referredtothepresentdifficultiesconfrontingtheSociety,and appealedtoalltokeeptheSociety active.Mr.Morganstressedtheimportanceofthedutiesofprefects.

Mr.Lennard,inaneloquentaddress,attackedthemodernerrorsand stressedonthosewhowerenotinthe fightingforceswhatwouldbetheir dutiestorehabilitatemorallyand spirituallymanywhowouldcomeback brokenbythewar.Hereinwouldlie onegreatactivityforwhichtheHoly Namemanshouldnowbefittinghimself.

Rev.FatherLinnanereferredtothe earlydaysoftheHolyNameSociety inNortham,andpaidtributetothe earlyexecutiveofficers,someofwhom werepresentthatmorning.Hewas pleasedtoseethatthemembersoftodaywerecarryingtheSocietyforward.

Rev.FatherKelly,C.SS.R.,thanked theparishionersofNorthamforthe welcomehereceivedintotheCatholic community.

MajorKinchington,ofForbes;New SouthWales,spokeonbehalfofthe menoftheForces,andassociatedhimselfwiththethanksexpressedbyRev. FatherKelly,C.SS.R.Thespeaker claimedthathealwaysfelttheCatholicmeninuniformwerealwayswelcomeatCatholicfunctions,forwherevertheymightbetheytravelledon thepassportofFaith.Referencewas thenmadetothesplendidopportunitiesprovidedincampsbytheChaplainsforthepracticeofFaith.Holy NameSocietieshadbeenformedin campsandinbattalions,andoldmembershadbeenre-establishedandnew membersrecruited.TheChaplains wereveryassiduousintheireffortsfor thewelfareoftheFaith,andfathers andmotherscouldtakeconsolationin thefactthatabsentsonsanddaughterswerebynomeansneglected, ratherwasitthecontrary-theFaith wasnotsubmergedbecauseofalack ofassociationwithhome.Inconclusion,MajorKinchingtonreferredvery complimentarilytoourprocessionon theFeastofChristtheKing,which hewasprivilegedtoattend.
