CATHOLICISM-HopeoftheWorld
TheBritishFleetrosetopower,won greatvictories,becameinvincible,unquestioned.Therewasaconsequent riseinBritishtradeandmanufacturing;EnglandgainedcontrolofIndia; theDominionscameintobeing,Canada,Australia,NewZealand.EnglandlostherAmericancolonies,but theyrapidlydevelopedintotherichestcountryintheworld,andAmerica wasatfirstalmostentirelyofProtestantculture.
ProtestantPrussiarose,gaineddominanceinGermany,createdunderBismarcktheGermanEmpire,became alliedtoProtestantEngland.Prussia defeatedAustria,withEnglandwon theNapoleonicwars.HadNapoleon won,theCatholicculturemighthave beenrestored-tosaveEnglandfrom itself.Butitwasnottobe.France wasroutedbyPrussiain1870.
MeanwhiletheothergreatCatholic nationsandEmpireshaddeclined, Spain,Portugal,Austria,theEmpire, Italy.ThePapalStateshadbeen lost.Irelandhadsufferedpersecutionandfamine,theIrishhadbeen dispossessedoftheirland.
Thiswastheageofthedominance 'ofProtestantsandEnglishculture Englishinstitutionswerecopiedall overtheworld.Theseincludedthe Englishparliamentarysystem,unsuitedtopeopleswithastrongsenseof equality.Modernbankingandusury aroseinEnglandandHolland:the syStemofhugeinternationalloans. Therewasusuryeverywhere;itwas restrictedinCatholiccountries,unrestrictedinProtestant.TheeducationalsysteminEuropegrewmore andmoredivorcedfromreligion, moralsdecay,thenewpagansbeginto appear,thenewservilityarises.CivilisationhadturnedfromtheCatholic Church,wasreturningtothepaganismandslaveryfromwhichtheChurch hadraisedit.Rut,asBellocpoints out,thereisagreatdifferencenetween themangoingupthehilltoCatholicismandthemanslippingbackdown thehilltopaganism.
Theturnofthetidecame,thedeclineinthepoweroftheProtestant culture,thebeginningoftheCatholic recovery.Catholicismbegantoreviveduringthelastcentury,toacquiregreaterinfluenceamongtheuniversities,inthoughtandphilosophy andliterature.ThegreatPopeLeo XIIIwrotehisencyclicals,including theepoch-making"RerttmNovarum" (theconditionoftheworkingclasses) CardinalMercierwasanoutstanding figure.TherewasarevivalofinterestinSt.ThomasAquinas;Louvain University,inBelgium,begantoradiateCatholicintellectualenergy throughoutWesternEurope.The Papacyhasgrowninprestigeand moralauthority.PiusXI,thePope ofCatholicAction,followed"Rerum Novarium"with "Quadragesim:, Anno"(fortyyearsafter).
Thereweregreatconverts,thephilosophers,MaritainandBergson;Chesterton.TherecametheCatholicliteraryrevival,Chesterton,Belloc,Ronald Knox.ChristopherDawson,ChristopherHollis,andothers.TheIrishrecoveredtheirland.Salazar'sPortugal hasappeared,pointingthewaytoth thetrueNewOrder,basedonthe PapalSocialEncyclicalsandCatholic doctrine.
ButmoreimportantthantheCatholicrevivalhasbeenthedeclineinthe Protestantreligionfromwithin;the
declineoftheProtestantcultureis merelytheexternalmanifestationof thatinwarddecay.Ithasbecome auto-toxic,self-poisoning.Whatare thereasons?Firstly,theBible.Protestantismbeganinaspiritofsceptical enquiry.Itdeniedtheauthorityof theChurch.Itsaidthateveryman mustexaminedoctrinesanddocumentsforhimself.Illogicallyittook theCatholicdoctrineoftheinspiration oftheScripturesandusedtheBible againsttheChurch.TheBiblebecameall-important,almostanobject ofworship.ButtheProtestantsocalledHigherCriticstooktheBible intheProtestantspiritofscepticalenquiry.Fromalmostworshippingthe textasthewordofGod,theycame todoubtalmosteverythinginit-Gospels,miracles,prophecies.When theyhadfinishedwiththeBibleProtestantismwasamassofruins.The Protestantsectsmultiplydaily.PrivatejudgmenthasbrokenProtestantismintoamyriadfragments,crank sects,Jehovah'sWitnesses,Christian Science,FatherDevine,andsoon.IndividualProtestants,ofwhomDr. Angusisanoutstandingexample,have deniedordoubtedpracticallyevery Christiandoctrine.
Insocialeconomics,too,Protestantismhastendedtodestroythepeasantry,theCatholic,controlledeconomy.Itproducedmodernindustrial capitalism,modernusuriousbanking, cripplingloans,internalandinternational,unrestrainedcompetitionand exploitation.Thesethingsmadethe Protestantnationsrichandpowerful, theirdominancewasbasedonthem. Buttheybredvastsocialevils,povertyinthemidstofplenty,adispossessed,insecureproletariatnumberingmanymillionswhobecamedeterminedtoendtheseevils.TheProtestantdoctrineofman'ssulf-sufficiencyinclinedtowardintensenationalism,worshipofone'sownnation,a formofself-worship.Buttheselfworshippingnationstendedtoquarrel witheachother;eachtobelieveitself thesuperiorrace;withtheurgetotry toproveit.ThelastGreatWarwas aturningpoint;itlargelyshattered thestatusquo.Capitalism,whereit hassurvived,isprecariouslypropped upbyeverysortofdevice.Devices suchastheBeveridgePlanwhich, thoughgoodtoadegree,arenotsufficientlyfundamental.Whatisneededistherestorationofpropertyto thepeople,ownership,independence, truefreedomfunctionalgovernment.
