AstudyofOzanam'sliferevealsa sympatheticcharacterwithaquick andreadyunderstandingofhisfellow men,andatendersolicitudeforthe poorandsuffering.Nodoubtthese qualitieswereinheritedfromhisparents,whoseliveswerespentintheserviceofthepoor. AthirdofDr. Ozanam'spracticewassetasidefor thoseinneed,andinfacthisdeath wasduetoafalldownabrokenstairwayofatenementwherehewasvisitingapoorpatient.Theexamplegiven himfromhisearliestyearsimplanted intheboy'sheartthevirtue charity,anditisnotsurprisingwhenhe andhiscompanionsweredecidingon aworkthroughwhichtheymightexpresstheirCatholicismOzanam shouldsuggest,"LetushelpourneighbourasJesusChristdid,andletus putourfaithundertheprotectionof charity."
WereadofanincidentinFrederic Ozanam'slifewhichwillhelpustorealisetheimmensityofhisloveforthe poor.OnEasterEveononeoccasionheseemedparticularlygloomy andpre-occupied,andwhenaskedby hiswifethecause,hereplied:"Ihave justbeenvisitingapoorfamilyofmy Conference,andIcannotthinkwithoutdeepregretthat,whilstourdaughterwillbesohappywithherEaster presents,thisFeastwillbringthem neitherpresentsnorjoy.Seeifyou haveanymoneyavailabletoenable thesepoorlittleonestorejoicelike ourselves."
Allthatwasleftwasnecessaryfor theneedsofthehouse,butthesadness ofthistrulyChristianheartdisappearedonlywhenhiswifemadeupher mindtogivehimsomethingoutof whatwasreallynecessaryforthemselves.Hehastenedtothechildrenof thepoorfamilyandreturnedbeaming withjoytocelebratewithhisownthe happiestEasterofhislife.
TheOrganisationformedbyOzanam andhiscompanionstocarryouthis idealswastheSocietyofSt.Vincentde Paul,whichwassimplyadevelopment ofthespiritoftheApostleofCharity alreadyexistingintheSistersofCharity,whichhadbeenfoundedtwocenturiesearlierbySt.VincentdePaul. Havingthisinmind,itisunderstandablewhyOzanamchosehisnamefor theSociety.
Ozanamsaid:"Tochooseapatron Saintdoesnotmeansimplyadopting afigureheadwhichwillhelpustocut agoodfigureinthereligiousworld.A
patronSaintisamodelwhomwemust trytoimitate,ashehasstrivenhimselftoimitatetheDivineModel,Jesus Christ.Itmeanstryingtocarryon theworkHehasstarted,endeavouring toacquiresomethingofHiswarmth ofheart,attemptingtocatchupthe threadsofthethoughtswhichwerein Hisbrain.ApatronSaintprovided amodelforustocopyonthisearth andaprotectorwhowillwatchoverus inheaven."Ozanamwasconvinced thatsuchworkwouldbeofincalculablebenefittoyoungmen,especially hisownuniversityconfreres,asit wouldhaveasteadyingandennobling effectontheircharacters.Herealisedthatmanyyoungmenattending collegesanduniversitiesareoftenout oftouchwiththatstrataofsociety whohavefeltthepangsofhungerand thecoldfrominsufficientclothes.He knewthatbringingthemintotouch withtherealitiesoflifeandthedevelopmentofthevirtuesofcharityand humilitythroughstrivingtoimitate thecharityoftheirHeavenlypatron, St.VincentdePaul,who,onhispart, endeavouredwhenonearthtoimitate thecharityofChrist,wouldbeaneffectiveantidoteagainstthosemany dangerstofaithwithwhichoneisconfrontedinearlymanhood.
Althoughoveracenturyhaselapsed sincethefoundationoftheSocietyof St.VincentdePaul,itspotencyin sanctifyingitsmembersremainsunchanged.

AnApostolicWorkWhich SurpassesMerePhilanthropy
Ozanam'sloveforthepoorisbeing perpetuatedthroughthisSociety,and themembersofitto-dayhavethesame aspirationsasthosewhowereresponsibleforitsformationunderGod'sinspirationin1833.
Unfortunately,manyerroneouslyregardedtheSocietymerelyasarelief givingorganisation,probablydueto theworkofcorporalcharitybeingcarriedoutbyitsmembers.However, thatwascontrarytoOzanam'sintention,andhepointsoutthat:"Ourprincipalobjectwasnottocometothe assistanceofthepoor,thatwasonly ameansweemployed.Ourobject wastokeepourselvesfirmintheCatholicFaith,andtospreadthatFaith amongstothersthroughcharity,extendedtoall,irrespectiveofclassor creed."Thetitleofthepoortoour commiserationistheirpovertyitself." LetushelpourneighbourasJesus Christdid,andletusputourfaith undertheprotectionofcharity."
TheSocietyofSt.VincentdePaul wasnotaphilanthropicbody,butessentiallyaspiritualsocietywhosevisits werecarriedoutinthespiritofGod. Mons.Bailley,atthefirstmeetingof theSociety,said:"Ifyouwishtohelp yourselvesandthepoor,sanctifyyourselvesinseeingJesusChristsuffering inthepersonofthepoor."Andlater hewrote:"ItpleasedJesusChristfirst topracticethatwhichafterwardsHe wastoteachmankind."WearedesirousofimitatingthatDivineModelso farasourweaknesswillallow.
Ozanamalso,indealingwiththerelationshipexistingbetweenthepoor andmembers,stressesthenecessityof thecultivationofhumility,andinreferringtothepoorsaid:"Youareour masters,andweareyourservantsin oureyes.Youarethesacredimages ofGodwhomwedonotsee,andnot
knowinghowtoloveHimotherwise, weloveHiminyou."
TheearlymembersoftheSociety werefullycognisantoftheefficacyin spiritualisingthelivesofmembersif carriedoutintherightspirit.They realisedthegreatopportunitiesfor sanctificationthroughtheidentificationofChristwiththepoor,andthe renunciationofselfinallowingChrist todoallthingsinus.Nodoubt,like theirHeavenlyPatron,St.Vincentde Paul,theysetoutontheirerrandsof mercythroughthestreetsofParis, aftersayingtothemselves:"How wouldChristdothis?"
ThatisthespiritoftheSocietyofSt. VincentdePaulwhichOzanamandhi9 companions,throughtheGraceofGod, havehandeddowntoposterity.Withoutthatspirit,theSocietywouldbea corpseandworthlessinGod'ssight, eventhoughexternalworksmightwin theapplauseofmen,andvisitationof thepoormightearnthegratitudeof thoserelieved.Theactsperformed wouldbeofnoavailinsanctifying thelivesofmembers.
SomewhoareunawareofthespiritualmissionoftheSocietyofSt.VincentdePaulmightquestionthenecessityofitinviewofthesocialservices nowbeingrenderedbythepublicauthorities.Itwasneverintendedthat theworkoftheSocietyberestrictedto 21.nnbaiasoqlJosJaquinuSuigeiuTuilp corporalcharity,andinspiteofthe. materialassistance,therearethesick andthatlargebodywhoarespirituallypoor,andhungerforTruth.These awaitsanctificationthroughworksof spiritualcharity.Letusstrivewith greaterefforttorealiseOzanam'sideals inourselvesandintheSocietyofour dayandendeavourtodeepenwithin oursoulstheniritofOzanam,which isthespiritofChrist.

A Iwouldaskyoutolistenvery carefullytowhatIhavetosayonthis subjectto-night,andindefiningforyou theattitudeoftheCatholicChurchtowardsSocialism,Ileavetoyourown goodjudgmentanyfurthercomparison youwishtomakebetweentheCatholic pointofviewandthatofotherdenominations.
Now,firstofall,theterm"Socialism"to-clayisgivenavarietyofinterpretations.Itisoneofthose"catchcries"thatsignifieswithaglorious vaguenessanythingfromCommunism ortheRedFascismrearingitsugly headinourmidsttolesssweeping theoriesofsocialreforminvolvingonly thenationalisationofbankingandcertainessentialmajorindustries,andpublicutilities,forinstance.
Andattheoutset,Iwishtomakeit quiteclear,andparticularlytoacertainmemberofourLegislativeCouncil,thatthisanswerisnotgoingtobe yetanotherincursionoftheChurch intothefieldofpartypolitics.Neither thissessionnoranyotherCatholicactivityaimstoinfluenceanyoneintheir purelypoliticalopinions.Ihavebeen askedastraightquestionandIam goingtogivetheCatholicAnswerto thatquestion,becauseitvitallyconcernsmoralityandreligion,andthere-

foreshouldbeconsideredbyeveryone ofusinthelightoftheteachingof ChristHimself,aspreservedbyHis Churchthroughthecenturies.
CommunisticSocialismis,ofcourse, condemnedbytheCatholicChurch. AnymitigatedformofSocialism,ignoringreligionandrelyingonpurelymaterialisticmotivesandmethods,isalso condemned.IfyoudefineSocialism asthatsystemofsocialandeconomic organisationinwhichtheStatebecomes thesoleownerofallthesourcesofproductionandmeansofdistribution,and therebyassumestoitselfadespotic controlofthechiefactiivtiesofhuman life,then,thatalsoiscondemnedby theCatholicChurch.
Tohemoreexplicit,ifonemeansby Socialismthesocialisationofindustry, production,distributionandexchange, bytheconstitutionaluseofParliamentaryandMunicipaladministrativemachinery,thenonemustrememberfirst ofallthatadvocatesofsuchapolicy areanythingbutagreedamongstthemselvesastowhatsuchanobjectiveinvolves.
However,takenatitsfacevalue,itis hadtoseehowanyCatholiccansupportsuchatheoryofsocialreformparticularlyifitbeintendedasafuture permanentregime.
FortheCatholicChurchthebasisof allsocialorderisnotsecurity-butfreedom.Andanysystemthatinterfere, withthefreedomoftheindividualcitizeninhisnaturalrightsis,asasystem, morallywrongSocialism,then,can

Thesocialisationofindustry,produc. tion,distributionandexchangeisfar toosweeping,quiteunnecessary,and definitelyviolatesthejustrightsofindividuals.
So,tosumup,theCatholicChurch opposesthecompletesocialisationof industryandthemeansofdistribution, because,whilstthereismuchinsocialismthatistrueandcommendable,yet, asasystem,itmustbecondemnedas anti-Christianandinhuman.AsPius XIsaid:"Noonecanbe,atthesame time,asincereCatholicandatrueSocialist.""ChristianSocialism,"therefore,issimplyacontradictioninterms, sincethebasicphilosophyofSocialism cannotbereconciledwithChristianity.
TrueSocialistaimsareimpossibleto attaininpractice,andthepromiseof aparadiseonearth,freefromwant andsuffering,isonlyasillydelusion.
Itisbased,too,onafalseinterpretationofhumanequality.Totryto eliminateclass'distinctionorinequalityamongmenistocontradictboth thenaturallawofmoralityandthe moralityandtheteachingofChrist.
Moreover,bymerelysubstituting StateCapitalismforPrivateCapitalism itonlyintensifiesalltheevilsofthe presentsystem.Itcertainlydeprives menoftherighttoprivateproperty, forunderSocialismtheworkerremains dispossessedandisruledbybureaucratswhocombineeconomicwithpoliticaldictatorship.Itmightgiveyou security,butwillnotgiveyoufreedom. Socialismsubordinatestherightsof theindividualandthefamilytothe State,andthusopensthewaytothe tyrannyandslaveryoftheTotalitarian State.Wemightwellimagineour livesruledinalmosteverydetail,not byGauleitersorCommissars,butby DirectorsandDeputy-Directorsofthis andthat-andarosebyanyother name.
Itissimplyacaseofserfdomunder bureaucracy.
SothatiswhytheCatholicChurch isopposedtoSocialismassuch.
Ontheotherhand,theChurchhas approvedtheStatecontrolofessential servicesinthepublicinterest,andof therightoftheStatetointerferewhere theprivatemanipulationofcreditis inimicaltothecommongood.Yet, thiscontrolofnationalcreditpolicyby publicinstitutionsdoesnotimplythe nationalisationofbanking.Andthis strictlylimitedStatecontrolisavery differentthingfromthecompleteso-
cialisationofindustry,production,distributionandexchange,whichisper- hapsthemorecommoninterpretation ofmodernSocialism.
Finally,wearetoldto-daythatthere arebuttwoalternativesfacingusCapitalismaswehaveknownitinthe past,andSocialismaswearepromised itinthefuture.Bothareextremes, bothareanti-Christian,andbothare giganticconspiraciesagainstthecommonman.Hutthereisamiddlecourse, avocationalorganisingofsocietyguaranteeingtheworkerallthathehasa rightto,butaimingnotonlyatsecuritybutatfreedomforeveryman.
Itisacommonsense,reasonableand practicablesolution.Tobringitabout wedon'thavetothinkintermsofrevolutionorindustrialanarchy-allthat isquiteunnecessary.Nordoesitimplythatanyinjusticebedonetoany sectionofthecommunity.Thousands ofthinkingAustraliansalreadyseein itthemiddlecoursethatthemajority ofourpeoplearelookingfor.Itis notcompromise,itisstrictjusticeall round,applyingtheteachingsofChrist tothepresentsocialcrisis.Wehave ourpatternforwar,theChurchgives youapatternforpeace,andifyouare interestedIsuggestyoulisteninon thisStationeveryMondayeveningat 9.45totheSocialJusticeSession.There youhavethealternativetothetwinextremesofCapitalismandSocialism.
Q.:"IsitbecauseifSocialismever cametopoweryourChurchwould loseaverybigproportionofitsmaterialwealth?"
A.:AtthetimeoftheReformation inEnglandtheCatholicChurchpreferredtobeplunderedofherchurches andmaterialpossessionsratherthan compromiseonamatterofprinciple. Soto-daytheCatholicChurchisopposedtoSocialismbecauseasasystem itiscontrarytothenaturallawand theteachingofChrist.Thatisher basicobjectiontoSocialism,andthe preservationofhermaterialwealthis amatterofverysecondaryimportance inanissuewhichisoneofprinciple. TheCatholicChurchinAustraliatoday,evenasinEngland400yearsago, isprepared,ifnecessary,tosufferthe confiscationofherchurchesandinstitutionsratherthancompromiseina questionofmorality.Itisnotamatterofbricksandmortar,butpersonal freedomandsocialjusticethatis stake.

Elevenhundredmen,fivehundredand twentywomen,andsixtychildrenwere inthefortresswithfoodandwater foraweek,andasupplyofsmallam munition.Whenthesiegebegan,the nearestNationalisttroopswereinAfricaandtheRedFleetheldthe Straits.
Yet,totheastonishmentandadmirationoftheworld,ColonelMoscardoandhistroopsheldoutforno lessthanseventydays.Waterwas rationedattherateofonelitreaday, meatatonehorseadaybetween1,600 people!Withnowaterforwashing, nooiltoburn,shelledbysome12,000 shells,bombedbysome500bombs, minedfourtimes,with59percent.of themencasualtiesandnowomanhurt, theylivedoninthedepthsofthedark dungeonsandwaited,resolvedtodie ratherthansurrender.
Whenthewomenwereofferedtheir freedomtheyrepliedthatifthemen weretosurrendertheythemselves wouldtaketheirplacesonthebattlements.

Weneednotconfineourselvesto commanders;thereisonrecordthe storyofanAmericanregimentwhich wentoverthetopinFrance,eachman withhisrosaryfastenedtohisleft shoulderstrap.Oneofthefirst V.C.'sof1914wasfounddeadbyhis machinegun;inhisbreastpocket waswell-thumbedcopyoftheLittle OfficeoftheImmaculateConception; theyopenedhistightlyclenchedfist andfoundamedalofOurLady.We mightcite,too,thedeathofLt.JoacquinFuentesPila,oftheSpanish MoroccanArmy;trappedbythe Arabs,hecrouchedinthecornerofa trench,withaburlysergeantbeside him,saidhislastrosaryaloud;and diedwithMary'sscapularpressedto hislips.

HowcomesitthatMaryhassuch anappealforthesoldier?Weare wonttoassociateherwithallthat isbeautifulandfair;welinkhername withallthatisnobleinpoetryandin art;wecomparehertoflowersandall thingsfragrant,andinvokeherasthe "womanclothedwiththesunandthe moonbeneathherfeet,andabouther headadiademoftwelvestars."What place,then,hasthisFairOne,amidthe dustandsmokeandflameofbombs andshellsthatsheshouldbesoconstantlyinvokeduponthebattlefield?
Whenweheapourtitlesofloveand praiseuponOurLadywetendtoforgetthatsheearnedeachtitleinher Litany,eachjewelinhercrown.She paidthepriceofCalvary.Sheisthe FairOneofIsrael,becausesheisthe StrongOneofIsrael.Marywasthe instrumentfashionedbyGodtocrush Satan'shead-"Sheshallcrushthy headandthoushaltlieinwaitforher heel."Tocrushtheheadofthe greatarchangelLucifer!Whatstrength ofsouldidnotthattaskdemand!
MaterDolorosa.
Thisstrengthcanbeseenthroughoutherlife,butitstandsoutin greaterreliefonCalvary.Itisnot thatMarywasaskedmerelytoendure thesightofherSon'storments.If thathadbeenallhersorrowwould stillhavebeen"greatasthesea,"and thousandsofmartyrs,considering theirpainsasnaughtcomparedto hers,wouldnothavehesitatedtohail herastheirQueen.Butitwasnot all;hersacrificewastobeaholocaust;awhole-burntoffering;shewas askedtoconsenttothePassion.Her willwasunitedinallthingstoHis will.If,asSt.Paulsays,"Hewas offeredbecauseHewilledit,"then
MaryjoinedHimintheoffering;she, too,willedit.Itwasatremendous thingtoaskofamother!
Notmerelydidshewillit,butshe stoodbyandsawthesacrificeconsummatedinallitsstarkhorror.Her soulwastoostrong,herwilltoopowerfulfortheretobeanyrepiningon Calvary.Therewasnofainting,no swooning;inunspeakableagonyshe stoodthereandboreitall."Stabat intrepida,"saysSt.Bernardsosublimely-"shestoodundaunted." Poetshavetriedinvaintodescribe

Perhapsatthepresenttimewhenthe nationsoftheworldinvolvedinthe bloodiestwarinhistory,manyheroes ofthe1914.18conflictwillbeforgotten.Theirdeeds,whilerecognisedas great,will,inmanyinstances,besupplantedbythoseoftheirsonswhoare oncemoredefendingthe,.country againsttheforeignaggressor.Howeverthereisonenamethatwillnever beforgotten,anamewhichduringthe lastwarneversomuchasreceived

amentioninourdailypapers,yeta namewhicheventothis'daymanya veteranofLoos,theSomme,and Ypresrememberswithloveandaffection-thatnameisFatherWilliam JosephDoyle,S.J.
OnMarch31,1891,WilliamDoyle enteredtheJesuitnovitiate,Tullabeg, Ireland;onAugust15,1893,hepronouncedthethreereligiousvows,and onJuly28,1907,wasordainedpriest. Spacedoesnotpermitustofollow theyoungnovicethroughthetrialsof noviceshiplife,orthescholastic throughthe13years'devotedtoclassical,philosophicalandtheological WEREYOUONEOFTHELUCKYONESTHISTIME IFNOTGETYOURTICKETFROM-
studies.Itsufficestosaythatall duringthistime,Willie(ashewasaffectionatelycalled)wasabsorbingthat Ignatianspiritualitywhichwasto standhiminsuchgoodsteadinafter life.
Afterhisordination,FatherDoyle wasappointedtotheteachingstaffof BelvedereCollege,Dublin.Whilehe performedhistaskfaithfully,hegreatlydesiredamoreactiveparticipation inthepriestlyapostolate.Onecan imaginehisjoywhen,in1910,hewas appointedtotheIrishJesuit'Mission staff.Hewrotetohisbrother,"Jesus haschosenmetopreachtheGospelto everycreature;praythatImaynot disappointHim."Asamissioner, FatherDoylefoundamplescopefor hisapostoliczeal,hissanctityjoined toacheerfuldispositionmadehimirresistibleeventothemosthardened sinners;peopleflockedtohisconfessional:thecharityofChristdrovehim intoslumsandhack-streetsinsearch ofsoulssunkinsin:ifthesinner wouldnotbepersuaded,hewould thenspendlongvigilsinprayerinan efforttowinhimbacktoGod.Yet, despitehissuccesses,withthatcharacteristichumilityofthegreatservants ofGod,inaletterwrittenaboutthis time,hethusreferstohiswork:"My successherehasfarsurpassedanythingIlookedfor. Theheaviertheburdenofwork,the moredidFatherDoyleintensifyhis prayersandpenances.Herealisedto thefullthetruthofthosewordsofhis fellowJesuit,BlessedClaudedela Colombiere,"iftherearesofewconversionsamongChristians,itisbecause therearesofewwhopray,though therearemanywhopreach."Thus, afteradayspentinthepulpitorconfessional,hewouldwithdrawtosome oratorywheretheBlessedSacrament wasreservedandspendthenightin prayer.Hismannerofprayingduringthesenocturnalvigilscanbeseen fromanentrymadeinhisspiritual notebookduringamissionpreachedat Glasgow:"ImadetheHolyHour,"he writes,"prostrateonthemarbleflags. ThenfortwohoursImadetheStationsoftheCross,standing,kneeling, andprostrate,takingfourteenstrokes ofthedisciplineateachStation.For therestofthenight,IremainedkneelingbeforetheTabernacle,atintervals witharmsoutstretched,tillIcould heartheagonynolonger."Fromhis earliestdaysofreligion,FatherDoyle hadadoptedthe"agerecontra"ofthe saints-thatis,acontinualstriving againsthimselfeveninthemostinnocentpleasures:"othersmaytravelby otherroads,"hewrote,"theroadof painismine."Godwasnomerehazy personagetohim.HewasSomeone intenselyreal,andthisno'doubtexplainsthereasonwhyitwasremarked"prayerseemstoFatherDoyleto beanactualconversation."Indeedit wasanactualconversationandmore,it wasforhimacontinualconversation.

Withtheoutbreakofwarin1914, FatherDoylevolunteeredforthe FrontasMilitaryChaplain,andinthe followingyearwasaccepted,beingattachedtothe8th.RoyalIrishFusiliers.
OnFebruary17,1916,hisregimentreceivedorderstoproceedtoFrance. Hereatlast,WillieDoylewasgiven anopportunityofexercisinginaspecialwaythatspiritualitywhichthe soldiersaint,IgnatiusLoyola,had giventotheOrderhefounded.
NowasneverbeforewouldFather Doyleneedthehumourwhichwasa
characteristictraitinhislife.To smileandspeakwordsofconsolation andcomforttomenwhosenervesare strainedalmosttobreakingpoint, whileonestandsinatrenchuptothe kneesinmud,withshotandshellrainingdawnonallsides,isnoeasytask, asFatherDoylesoondiscovered.Yet atnotimewasheheardtocomplain; hislettershomealwayshadtheirhumouroustouchesevenwhenrelatingthe mostghastlyscenes.OnEasterSunday,April23,heofferedhisfirstMass inthetrenches."Mychurchwasa bitofatrench,"hewrites;"thealtar apileofsandbags.Thoughwehad tostand'deepinmud,notknowingthemomentasuddencalltoarms wouldcome,manyaferventprayer wentuptoHeaven;A-tatmorning."
Alettertohisfathergivesussome ideaofthehorrorsthissoldierof Christhadtogothroughinhisefforts tobringthelastconsolationsofreligiontothesoldiersGodhadentrusted tohiscare."Theretheylay,"he writes,"scoresofthem(welost800 nearlyallfromgas)inthebottomof thetrenchineveryconceivablepos- ture. Idon'tthinkyouwillblame mewhenItellyouthat,morethan once,thewordsofabsolutionstuckin mythroatandtearssplasheddownon tothepatient,sufferingfacesofmy boys,asIbentdowntoanointthem. Aftertheincidentjustrelated, FatherDoylewasgivenafewdays'rest and,forthefirsttimeforafortnight, hadanopportunityofremovinghis clothes.Forhisvalour,hereceived theParchmentofMeritofthe49th.Brigade.However,hehadhigherideals thanmereearthlyglory,andhecasuallyremarked,"Ihopethattheangels havenotforgottenme,andIshallget alittlecornerintheirreporttoheadquartersabove."
Whetherornotthesoldiersbelieved FatherDoyletobeimmunefromshot andshellisdifficulttosay;yetthe factremainsthatwhenbombardments wereattheirhighest,menpreferred theshelteroftheirpadre'shumbledugoutratherthanallthedefencesthe BritishGovernmntcouldsupplyher armieswith."LittleFatherDoyle(as thesoldiersaffectionatelycalledhim,despitethefactthathewassixfeettall) willprovidealltheprotectionwe need,"oneburlyIrishsoldierasserted -andjudgingbyWillie'snarrowescapesfromdeath,itwouldseemthat theirconfidencewasnotmisplaced.
ThedeepaffectionProtestantas wellasCatholicsoldiersborehimcan beseenfromaletterwrittentohis fathershortlybeforehisdeath: "Whilst.1waswriting,"hesays,"one ofmymenbelongingtotheIrish Rifles,ofwhichIhavechargealso, passedby,Wechattedforafewminutesandthenhewenton,butcame backshortlywithasteamingbowlof coffeewhichhehadbroughtforme. 'Iamnotoneofyourflock,Father,'he said,'butweallhaveagreatliking foryou.'Andthenheadded,'Ifall theofficerstreatedusasyoudo,our liveswouldbe'different.'Iwasgreatlytouchedbythepoorlad'sthoughtfulnessandimpressedbywhathesaid: 'Akindwordoftengoesfurtherthan onethinks,andonelosesnothingbyrememberingthatsoldiersarehuman beingsandhavefeelingslikeanyone else.'"
ARCHBISHOPLeFantisattack on"TheCatholicAnswer"has beenfollowedbyaspateoflettersin theeveningpress.Theseha'vebeen mainlyhostile,butIamnotconcerned withthisaspectofthematter.NobodyiscompelledtoliketheSession, oreventolistentoit,andstillless tobelievetheclaimsmadeinit.But thereareseveralfeaturesoftheattack whichareworthyofnotice.Forone thingthepeoplewhom"TheCatholic Answer"mostirritatescomebackagain andagaintolistentoit,untilirritation isfannedintoinfuriation.Thisisa psychologicalinterest,becauseordinarypeopleavoidpainifpossible,and itissosimpletoavoidpainoverthe ether.Itwouldseemthatforthem "TheCatholicAnswer"issomekindof fatalisticlodestarleadingthemonto destruction-amodernCircewho paralysesthewill.
Anotherpointofinterestisthat manypeoplearedesperatelyanxious tohave"TheCatholicAnswer"discontinued,becauseitisdoingharmto

theCatholicChurch.Theextraordinarythingaboutthisattitudeisthat itisadoptedbypeoplewho,foryears, havebeenendeavouringovertlyand covertlytoachievethatself-sameobject.Thissuddensolicitudeforthe Catholicwelfareonthepartofconsistentenemiesmaynotunnaturally beviewedwithsuspicion.
Butmostimportantly,theattempts tosuppress"TheCatholicAnswer" comefromthoseveryquarterswhich, inregardtothebanningoftheCommunists,weremostvociferousoverthe rightoffreespeech.Itisquiteastonishinghowthetenetsofliberalism breakdownintoawelterofilliberalismwhenthematterconcernedisoutsidetheordinarygamutoftheirsympathies.
Thevolumeandthetoneofthese criticismsareveryencouragingtoCatholics,becausetheyprovebeyond doubtthat"TheCatholicAnswer"is reachingthosecircleswhichitwasmost intendedtoreach.
LASTweekwelefttheRev.George TullochcommuningwithLord Macaulayovertheamazingprogressin knowledge,freedom,wealthandthe artsoflifemadeduringthethreecenturiesfollowingtheReformation,and ofwhichProtestantismwasthe"vital principle.'Itriedtopointoutthat thetheoryofprogresshaswornalittle thininasmuchasitdoesn'tfitthefacts andmenhaveaskedopenlywhether Westerncivilisationcansurvive.The contrastbetweentheconditionofCatholicandProtestantcountriesfares nubetternowthanwhenMacaulay wrote.Itwasandischiefly'acontrast betweenindustrialcapitalismandconservativepeasantries.Whatevermay bethoughtofpeasantries,itisquite certainthatcapitalism(thespecial creationofProtestantism)isatthe endofitstether.The"vitalprinciple"hasbroughtusaboundingpoverty,Statedespotism,proletarianism, andacompletedisregardforspiritual valuesinpublicandprivatelifealike.
IfIwereinMr.Tulloch'sshoesI wouldhavesoft-pedalledthissubject, becauseitisoneoftheclearestproofs ofthefailureandbankruptcyofthe Protestantculture.Whether Mr. Tulloch'spatheticVictorianismwill allowhimtoseethatthebottomhas fallenoutofhisworld,Icannottell. Perhapshewilltakerefugeintheold paganstoicism:"Sifractusillibatur orbis,nonmovear."Andperhapsthe onlyreplytothatisthedoubtfullyreputedanswerofGalileo:"Eppurese muove."

ThispracticalattentiontoHousing asoneofthemajorproblemswhich willhavetobevigorouslydealtwith assoonaspossible,isfromthereport ecentlypublishedinBritainbythe HousingSub-CommitteeoftheSword oftheSpiritMovement.
Thereport,whichdescribespropertyasan"extensionofpersonality" calculatedwhenadministeredwithjusticetodeepenandwidenaman'sinfluenceandpowerforgood,specifically advocates:
Houseswithautilityroom(forlaundryandstorage),arefrigerator,two fixedwaterbasinsinadditiontobath andscullerysinkand,forlargefamilies,containingfourdoublebedrooms andonesinglebedroom.
FiveTypesofHouses.
Thereportsaysthateveryhousing estateshouldincludeaccommodation infivecategories.Theseare:
(1)Forsinglepeopleandoldcouples.
(2)Fornewly-weds-onelivingroom, twobed,kitchen-sculleryandbathroom.
(3)Forfamiliesuptothreechildrenoneliving-roomandparlour,three bed,kitchen-sculleryandbathroom.

Spaceshouldbeprovidedforasmall standardrefrigerator,tobehiredata moderatecost.Ifpossisblebymass productiontoreducethepriceofrefrigerators,thisinstallationshouldbe standardisedforeveryhouse.
HotandColdWater.
Nearthebackdoor,sothatdirtneed notbebroughtin,shouldbeaW.C. andalavatorybasinwithhotandcold water.
Thesculleryshouldhaveplate-rack anddrainingboard.
Generalrecommendationsmadeby theCommitteearethatmainwater supplyshouldbeprovidedthroughout thecountry;electricityshouldbeavailableineveryvillageandbrought,if possible,tooutlyingfarmsandhamlets;overcrowdingregulationsshould betightenedup;andcollectionsofrefusemadetwiceweeklywhenlabouris againavailable.
Thereportmakesvariousrecommendationsregardingflats,oneofthem beingthatanurseryshouldbeattachedtoalllargeblocksofflatsanda nurseryschoolformpartofalllarge planningschemes.

TheHolyFather,inaradiomessage lastyear,didconsecratetheChurch andthewholeworldtotheImmaculate Heart,butHisHolinessatthesame timeurgedallChristianstoconsummatethisgesturebyconsecratingthemselvesindividually.
ForthisreasonseveraloftheBishopshaveconsecratedtheirdioceses andindividualparishes.
ConsecrationtoImmaculateHeart.
Noformulaisneededfortheindividualconsecration.Allthatisrequiredisasincere,heartfeltconfiding ofoneselfwithoutreservetothematernalloveofMary.
ApictureorstatueoftheImmaculateHeartshouldbehonouredinthe home.OnthefirstSaturdayofeach monththefaithfulareaskedtoreceive HolyCommunioninreparationandto recitetheRosary,andindividuals shoulddoeverythingpossibletoencourageotherstopractisethedevotion.
AtFatimaonJuly13,1917,Our Ladydeclared:
"Godwishestoestablishintheworld devotiontomyImmaculateHeart.If peopledowhatIhavetoldyou,many soulswillbesavedandwillfind peace. Thewarisgoingtoend,butifpeople donotceasetooffendGod,notmuch timewillelapseandpreciselyduring thenextPontificateanotherandmore terriblewarwillcommence.
"Whennightilluminatedbyanunknownlightisseen,knowthatthatis thesignalwhichGodgivesyouthat thechastisementoftheworldforits manytransgressionsisathand, throughwar,famine,andpersecution oftheChurchandoftheHolyFather.
"ToavoidthisIaskfortheconsecrationoftheworldtomyImmaculate HeartandCommunioninreparation onthefirstSaturdayofeachmonth.

Thisrevelationwasmadeduring thethirdofsixapparitions,thefirst beingonMay13andthelastonOctober13.Theywerewitnessedby threeyoungchildrenofthedistrictLucie,aged10,andhercousins,Jacinta,agedseven,andFrancis,aged nine.
OntheotheroccasionOurLadyrepeatedlyurgedthefrequentrecitation oftheRosary,penanceandmany prayersandsacrificesforsinnersfor, shedeclared,"manysoulsgotoHell becausethereisnoonetomakesacrificesforthem."

Thechildrenwerecloselyandsearchinglyquestionedaftertheapparitions bymanypeople,includinganumber offamousecclesiasticalprofessors. Mostoftherecordedstatementswere obtainedfromthembyawellknown theologicalprofessoroftheLisbonsem-

Theecclesiasticalcommissionappointedtoinvestigatetheapparitions didnotfinishitsworkuntil1930.Six monthslaterBishopdaSilvaofLeira issuedaletterdeclaringthattheapparitionsareworthyoffaithandper- mittingpublicdevotiontoOurLady ofFatima.
RemarkablecoincidenceshaveoccurredwithregardtoFatima.

ThemissionaryspiritofColumbus senthiminquestofnewworldsto conquer,thencametheday.in1492, whenhesawtheshoreofAmerica.In 1519MexicowasdiscoveredbyCortes, who,zealousforthefaith,plannedfor itsspreadinthisNewSpain.1551 sawthecomingoftheFranciscansand thebaptismofonemillionIndians,and fromMexicothefaithsoonspreadto CentralandNorthernAmerica,whilst inBrazil,Peru,andEquador,the Jesuitswerepenetratingandreaping theadvantageoflabouringunderthe flagofCatholicism.Bythistime EnglandandFrancehadahandinthe discoveryandcolonisation,andFrench HuguenotssettledinSouthAmerica.
AfterthediscoveryofCaliforniaby Cortesin1536,schoolsandchurches wereestablishedandplacesbeganto bearthenamesfamiliartothernisions.Eventothisdaythisinfluence hasremainedassuchcitiesasLosAngeles,SanFrancisco,andSanAntonio, testify.

UndertheTreatyofParis,Canada wascededtoBritain,buttheguaranteeofreligiouslibertywasnotupheld andthenewGovernmentsoughttoreplacetheCatholicHierarchybyAnglicans.Oppressionandconfiscation followeduntil11yearslaterunderthe QuebecAct,aftertherevoltofthe Americancolonies,BritaindiplomaticallygaveCanadareligiousfreedom.
AlthoughtheDominionwas300years oldatthebeginningofthe18th.century,theChurchwasonlyestablished intheeasternseaboardalongtheSt. Lawrence.ThegreatWestandNorth werepracticallyunknown.Explorers andfurtradershadgonebeyondthe paleofcivilisationseekingtheNorthWestPassagetoAsia-Baffin,Davis, SmithandMacKenzie.ItwasFranklynwhoeventuallydiscoveredit,but neitherhenorhisshipseverreturned; theyremainedfastlockedinPolarice. Herefur-bearinganimalsabounded, Naturehavingclothedthemforthe ArticregionsinasplendourlikeSolomon hisgloryinthe theprimevalforests.
SothestoryoftheOblateswhobecameknownastheApostlesofthe North-West,isthestoryofthefaith inthewhitewastes.TheCatholic communitiesthataretobefoundtodayamongtheIndiansandEskimos, arethefruitsofthebloodofthepioneermartyrs.Churchspiresnowrear proudlywhereonceatentservedfor servingMassinthebarbarouswilds.
HelpedintheirworkbytheGrey Nuns,theOblates'Provincenow reachesacrossthevastContinentof Canada,embracingYukon,Quebec, andfarintotheArcticregion.The PastoralvisitationoftheBishopof Athabaska-MacKenzieVicariate,takes yearstocomplete.Inlandswherea grimwinterlastsformonthsand springandautumnarelittleknown, climaticconditionsaddtothetrialsof missionwork.Canoesandpick-axes breakthewayforvoyagesalongthe MackenzieRiverandacrosstheHudsonBay.FiftyOblatesandoneBishopsharewith12,000Indiansthatland knownastheLandofthe'Midnight Sun.
FatherHaughgavesomeinteresting accountsoflifeandcustomsofthe varioustribesandhowfoodislaidby forthewinterseason.Ittakes25,000 fishestofeedoneoftheMissions,and thepoverty,lonelinessandofttimes hungerthatresultsfromalongwinter,issharedbypriestsandpeople.

OnthesameeveningHisGraceadministeredtheSacramentofConfirmationtoseventy-fivechildrenandafew adults,inthepresenceofapacked church.Thechildrenhayingcomein processionalordertotheirrespective places,HisGracearrivedintheSanctuarywhilstthechoirgaveabeautiful renderingofthe"EcceSacerdosMagrms.'.HisGracethenaddressedthe children,pointingouttheimportance andtheeffectsoftheSacramentwhich theywereabouttoreceive.Heconcludedbymakingaspiritedappealto themtoco-operatewiththegraces whichtheywereabouttoreceiveand thusshowthemselvesalwaysasgood soldiersofJesusChrist.
