Q.:"WhatistheChurch'sattitudetowardslongengagements?"

A.TheChurchhasthesameattitude thatanypersonoranyorganisation withasenseofmoralityandhonour wouldhavewithrespecttohumanhappiness.

Sometimeslongengagementscan't beavoided.Unforeseendifficulties mightcropup,marriagebecomesim. possible;it'sjustunfortunate;everybodyissorryforthecouple--theymay evenhesorryforthemselvesiftheir marriageislongdelayed.

Butthereisquiteadifferencebetweenadeliberatelylongengagement andanengagementthatislongbecause ofunavoidabledifficulties.Adeliberatelylongengagementisgenerallya greatmistake.

Firstofall,suchanengagementis likelytobethecauseofmoraldanger toboththemanandthewoman.If theyareengaged,theyevidentlyar.. inlove;theyhaveagreedtomarry; theyintendtomarry.Stilltheydonot marry.Well,theyhavethenatural passionsanddesiresthatarecommon tomostmenandwomen.Thesethey cannotlegitimatelysatisfyoutsideof marriage.Sotheirsituationbecomes difficultanddangerous,andoftennervouslyirritating.

Then,too,alongengagementisusuallyveryunfairtothewoman.Often longengagementsdonotendinmarriage.Unsoughtandunwantedspinsterhoodisasadandquitetoocommonconsequenceoflongengagements.

Infact,aunionlikethatjustdoesn't makesense.

But,then,manymarriagesthese daysseemnottomakesense.

TheJewishsacrificeswereacceptabletoGodwhenman'sselfsacrifice wasjoinedtothevictim'sdeathand thevisiblegiftrepresentedtheinvisible offering.TheJewishsacrificeswere effectivewhentheywereofferedinthe nameandinthehopeoftheRedeemer tocome.Atlength,sacrificeamong theJewsdeterioratedintoanempty ceremony,anexternalparadeaccordingtotheletteroftheLaw.All therequirementsoftheLaw,aspresentedintheBookofLeviticus,were fulfilled;theanimalswerecarefully chosen,theywereslainandtheirblood pouredbesidethealtar,buttherewas nodevotionintheheartsoftheofferers.Priestsandpeoplecaredonly fortheexternalact,itsprocession, ritual,andvestments.Thehearts oftheoffererswereunturnedtowardsGod,andtheirwillswereheedlessofHislaw.Apureintention,a cleanheart,andanuprightlifewere notexpressedbythevictim'sblood. Itwouldtaketoolongtomakeeven summarymentionofthetriumphsof medievalartandculture,butImust concludebysayingsomethingofthe structureofthemedievalworld.Somewhattothedetrimentofchronological perspectiveIhaveleftthismatterto theend.Togoback,then:wesaw thatthenotionoftheRomanEmpire hadbeenrevivedinthetimeofCharlemagne.Hiscoronation,fallingexactlyintheyear800,isadatethatis easilyremembered.Isaidthatthat empiredidnotlongsurviveitsfounder;buttheideaoftheChristianempiresurvived.Intheyear962Otto. kingoftheSaxonsandleaderofall eastFrankland,wascrownedEmperor oftheWest.Hisdominionsstretched eastwardfromtheRhine,coveringthe GermanlandsbutexcludingPrussia. Ottoandhissuccessorsrelied,almost exclusively,ontheepiscopateforthe consolidationandsecurityofthenew empire;infacttheeasternboundary washeldbyalineoffortifiedepiscopalsees,towhichwascommittedthe taskofconvertingandcurbingthebarbarians.Inbct,sonecessarywere thebishopstotheimperialsystem, thatthequestionoftheirappointment ledtoadisputeofmorethanacentury'sdurationbetweentheemperors andthePopes.Butwearenotconcernedwiththedetailsofmedieval history.Theimportantthingisto

grasptheideathatlaybehindthis RomanEmpireoftheWest.Known tohistoryastheHolyRomanEmpire, thisChristiansociety,presidedoverby thePopeandanEmperorcrownedby thePope,seemedtomedievalChristianstobethenaturalpoliticalexpressionoftheirFaith.Asanidealit informedthemindsofmentilltheReformation,andasapoliticalstructure itlastedtillNapoleon,impatientofa rivalwhocouldclaimtowearasenior crown,forcedtheEmperortoassume thetitleofEmperorofAustria.It willbeseenatoncethatinthislatter guisetheempireoftheWestlasted tillourowntime,beingfinallyextinguishedin1918,thoughOttoofHapsburgstillmaintainshisclaimtothe imperialthroneandthepresentruler ofHungarybearsthetitleof"Regent"outofdeferencetohisclaim.

ThenotionthatChristiannations shouldbewhollyseveredfromonean. otherwithoutanyadmissionoftheir communioninthebrotherhoodofthe Christianfaithissurelyrepugnantto theChristianmind, anditwascertainlyforeigntothemedievalmind. That iswhy, whiletheHolyRomanEmperorsneversucceeded, norcame withinsightofsucceeding, inestablishinganadministrativesystemcoterminouswiththeChristianWest, the ideaofChristianunitydidinformthe mindoftheWest.SuchcommoneffortsastheCrusadeswerepossible; scholarsflockedeasilyfromnationto nation;andtheexcessesofnationalistichatredswerekeptincheck. While theEmperor'swritdidnotrunfurther thanhecouldleadhisknights,thenotionofChristendom-theconceptof theChristianityformingasocietyof freenationsunderthepresidencyof anEmperorcrownedbyChrist'sVicar -didgivetotheChristianWesta senseofunity, and, forallitsdefects, theHolyRomanEmpiretowhichall Christianprincesregardedthemselves atleastinsomevaguewayaffiliated, didgivesomeimperfectexpressionto thefactthatallChristiansareunited intheMysticalBodyofChrist. No LeagueofNationsthatdoesnotadmit thedominionofChristandman'sneed ofunityinChristcaneversatisfythe Christianmind.
