Inthemanyarticlesandlettersthat haveappearedinthePressonthesubjectofChristianEducation,thereis evidenceofagrowingrealisationthat theomissionofreligionfromoureducationandnationallifeisresponsible formanyofourpresentills.Asoften asnotthereisnoclearideaastohow andwhyreligionmaybeexpectedto effectachange.Butgenuineanxiety isthere,andmanyareearnestlysearchingforaremedy.
Itmustbeadmittedthattheresults ofthesearchandtheremedieshitherto proposedhavebeendisappointing.Too oftenitseemstobetakenforgranted thatallthatisneededistheaddition towhatwehavealreadyofinstruction intheBible,andperhapsinwhatmay bedecreedbythecompetentauthoritiestobethefundamentalsofChristianity.Muchwouldbegainedif thisweresecuredandmaintainedin alltheschoolsofthecountry.But weshouldstillbeveryfarfromthe idealofChristianEducation.Asit stands,thesecondaryschoolcurriculum representsadisorderlyconglomeration ofunrelatedends,noneofthemabsolute,andnoneinapositiontodeterminetherelativevalueandimportanceoftherest.Fortherehasbeen noclear-cutaiminthelightofwhich ithasbeendevised:ithasbeenbuilt up,notonprinciples,butonaseries ofadjustmentsasonesubjectafter anotherhasclamouredforattention. Strandsarelefthangingwithnopatternordesign,thereligiousstrandtoo oftenconspicuousbyitsabsence.You cannotoutofthischaosproducea systemofChristianeducationbythe additionofanotherstrand;wehave enoughlooseendsalready:whatis neededisapatternintowhichthey shallallbewoven.Andthecryfor Christianeducation,ifitmeansanything,mustmeanthatthepatternis tobedeterminedandtracedoutby theChristianFaith.Wehaveinthe Faithjustthatdirectiveideawhich ourpresenteducationlacks,something

FortheFaithhasenteredsointimatelyintothebuildingupofEuropean culturethattoremoveitmeanstojoin ourenemiesintheirrevoltagainstthe civilisationoftheWest;andtorestoreittoitsrightfulplaceinthe educationalsystemofthecountryis,to putitatitslowest,thesurestway wehaveofensuringthat,whenthe warisover,weshallwinthepeace.
AtpresentweCatholics,andthose whothinkwithus,findourselvesin thepositionofbeingforcedbycircumstancestofollowacurriculumwhich, whateveritshistoryoritsmeritsmay be,wascertainlynotdesignedtomeet oureducationalaims-andtoaddto ittheknowledgeandpracticeofthe Faith.Wearethereforenotfreeto giveafullyChristianeducation.Nor arewefreetomaketotheculturaland religiouslifeofthenationthecontributionwhichweknowwehaveitin ourpowertomake.Intimesoftranquillityandsettledconviction,itmay wellbethatthechieffunctionofeducationistoperpetuatetheexisting ethosofsociety.Butweareliving inarevolutionaryage,wheneducation musthaveitseyesonsocietyasitis, andmoreonwhatweconceiveitought tobe.Herewewoulddowelltotake aleaffromtheenemy'sbookandsee howitcantransformawholepeople inageneration.TheNaziyouthis trainedforlifeandcitizenshipinthe State,notasitishereandnow,butas hisleadersintenditshouldbecome. throughtheinstrumentalityofeducation,amongtherisinggenerationof thatunhappycountry?Insofaras wedorealiseit,wemustsurelystrive toopposetothespiritualforcesthat arerangedagainstusaforceatleast asstrongtosecureourholdonour culturalandreligiousfoundations.And wecannotclaimtobedoingthatunlessweareassingle-mindedinourpurposeandaswhole-heartedandunswervinginouradoptionofwhatwe conceivetobethebestmeansto achieveit.Inthefieldofeducation rivalforcesareevennowmanoeuvring forpositionforthefinalstrugglewhich istodecidetowhomthefutureshall belong.Ifourtraditionalcivilisation istosurvive,wemustturnoutinour schoolsnotjust"safe"Christians,but youngmenandwomenwholovetheir Faithandlovetheircountry;whounderstandthemboth;whoknow,not becausetheyhavereaditinanEncyclicalorhearditfromthepulpit, butfromtheirownintelligentgraspof thenatureandhistoryofboth,that theEuropeancivilisationwhichEnglandsharesisaproductoftheFaith, andthatiftheFaithisfinallylost,that civilisationmustcrumbleanddecay assurelyasthebodymustrotwhen thesouldeparts.
Tomeetthe"totalitarian"challenge wehaveatotalitariananswerinthe integratingfunctionoftheFaith.It wastheFaiththatintegratedEurope. ItistheFaiththatintegratesthe powersandfunctionsoftheChristian intoonesupernaturalisedwhole.It istheFaiththatintergratesthemultiplicityofChristiansintooneBody ofChrist.ItistheFaiththatguides andintegrateshumanknowledge.And itistheFaiththatmustintergrate ourcurriculum.Noothersolutioncan begintoanswerthecryforChristian Education.Atbestwewouldget somesortofeducationwithreligion superadded:andwewouldbeback againintheolddivorceofculturefrom religion.Itisinthelightofthe Faithalonethatthetwoareseenas indissolublywedded.Ifweareto succeedhere,weshallhavetofind means,moreeffectivethanwehaveat present,ofensuringthatourteaching ofreligionshallbebroughtintoas closerelationaspossiblewithordinary humanlearningateverystageofthe child'sgrowthinknowledge,sothat theFaithmayinfluenceasitshould theformationofallhisideasand views,andthathemaythusdevelop atrulyChristianmind.Atpresent wehavetodoallwecantoturnout "total"Christiansinspiteofthecurriculumwhichtheexaminationsystem, bolsteredupasitisbyallsortsof sanctions,directandindirect,isforcingustofollow.Canwedevisea meansbywhichwecansucceedinour aim,notinspiteof,butprecisely throughtheeducationwegive?
Theanswertothisquestionishinted atinapertinentpassagefromthe SpensReport:
"Ithasbeensaidthat'theprincipal weaknessofthesecondarycurriculum, takenasawhole,isthattoooftenitis notcentredroundanycore,orrelated toanyonemainstemoflearning,or wayoflookingatlife.'Webelieve thatthisistrue,andthatthelackofa unifyingprinciple,suchasusedtobe providedbyaclassicaleducation,is responsibleforagreatdealofwasted andmisdirectedeffortintheclassroom. Wethinkthattheschool itselfshouldadoptaunifyingprinciple initscurriculum,andwerecommend thatitbefoundintheteachingof Englishandthatassemblyofsubjects whichareoftenlooselyspokenofas theEnglishsubjects."
Thisisexcellentsofarasitgoes, butitdoesnotgofarenough.The
Englishsubjectsreferredtoinclude EnglishLanguageandLiterature,History,Geography,andScripture.For ourpurposethegroupmustinclude ReligiousKnowledgeinitswidest sense.Idonotmeancatecheticalinstructiononly,thatwillalwaysbe necessary.Butthereismoreinbeing aChristian-thereisagreatdealmore inbeinganeducatedChristian-than justknowledgeofthecatechism.It shouldbepossibletodeviseacentral streamofstudy,runningrightthrough theschoolcoursefromthebeginning totheend,whoseobjectshallbeto leadthechildtoagradualappreciationoftheChristiancivilisationon which,hisworldhasbeenbuiltand which,inhowevermutilatedaform, heinherits.Itwillincludemuchof whatisalreadybeingtaughtunder suchseparateheadingsasReligious Doctrine,Apologetics,English,History, Geography,and,inthelaterstages, socialandeconomicproblems;butwith thisdifference,thatwhereashitherto thechildhasbeenintroducedtothese thingsonebyone,taughtthemoften bydifferentmastersatclearlydefined periods,andsohasseentheminisolation,asseparateandevenmutually exclusivedepartmentsofknowledge, hemaynow,ifwesucceedinmaking ourChristiansynthesis,"discern,or begintodiscern,anultimateendat whichhisactivitiesshouldaim to get,orbegintoget,avisionoflifeas asymphonyorworkofartinwhich thepartsarerelatedtothewhole,in whichtherearemanylesserpurposessuchasearningaliving,doingapar- ticularjob,exercisingaparticularfac-r ulty-butallaresubordinatedtoa governingpurpose,orSupremeEnd."

No,becausethemodernfamilyisunhappilylikeRachel's,it"isnot."So relaxedarethetiesofhome-lifethat wecannolongercountonitasageneralnurseryofideas.Stateaction? No,becausethatisactionfromabove (despitedemocraticpretence)and makesfortyranny.Bypropaganda? Yes,butwhere?Theanswerof"PatternforPeace"istheschool.Itrecommendsareformoftheeducational

Theschoolistheobviouskernelof thesocialquestionto-day.Beforethe daysoffree,secularandcompulsory educationitwasthehome.Butinthe complexityofmodernlife,theparents havehandedthebulkoftheirresponsibilitiesovertotheschool,fartoo muchso,Icontend.However,certain itisthattheschoolmustleadiftrue andlastingreformsaretobemade. Thefundamentalfightto-dayistopreservetherightsoftheindividualand ofthefamilyagainsttheabsolute poweroftheStateandoftheeconomic system.Yet,atthesametime,we believethatpublicopinionshouldbe educatedtoavalueofthose rights.
Now,iftheStateisreallyintent upontheabsorptionoftheindividual intothecollectivity,isitlikelytopermitobstructionstoarisethrougha systemofeducationwhichitselffinancesandcontrolsonacompulsory basis?
Obviouslyitisnot.AndsoCatholicsclaim,andwithreason,thatnot onlyisthesecularsystemadanger throughitsvirtualdenialofthemoral sanctionsuponwhichthetemporal powerrests,butespeciallythroughthe
facilitywithwhichitcouldbeturned tothepurposesoftyranny.Andlest anyoneshouldthinkthattheseare wildandfar-fetchedideas,Iwould pointouttheveryeffectiveusethe Nazismadeoftheirschoolsandhow StatolatrythusbecameafactinGermanyinlessthanageneration,andindeedhowthewholeGermanRevolutionwasbroughtaboutandsustained byNaziyouth.
Andlestanyoneshouldbelieve,as mostpeopledo,thatitcan'thappen here,IwouldemphasisethattheinstitutionofthesecularsysteminAustralia,theconsequentde-Christianisationofouryouth,andthegrowthof totalitarianideasandpracticesinthe Commonwealth,arecontemporaryand relateddevelopments.
Theschoolsareafesteringspotin theheartofAustralianism,notbecause theyteachevil,butbecausethey makenoproperandsufficientaccount ofgoodandtruth.Ifyoufailtoteach achildthathisdestinyisfulfilledin anotherworld,beassuredhewillmake themostofthepresentthroughselfishness,greedandthedenialofcommon rights.Denyhimtheknowledgeof Godandyoumostsurelydenyhimthe knowledgeofmanandevenofhimself. Indeedthereareentirestreetsandareasinthecityand suburbsintowhichnoself-respectinggirlcouldsafelygo,letalone live.Theveryairofsuchplacesbreathesabandon.Yet,such istheshortageofaccommodationthatgirlsoftenhavenochoice buttoacceptboardandlodgingindoubtfulquarters,orworse. Andnomatterhowcarefultheprevioushometrainingorloyalty totheFaith,aCatholicgirlinsuchanenvironmentisinconstant andproximatedanger.Thispositionhasbecomesoacutethat theCatholiccommunitycannolongertolerateit.Iftheydid theymightnotunjustlybechargedwithconnivingatevil.Sothe CatholicWomen'sLeagueistobecongratulatedinmakingthedecisiontoestablishasuitableHostel,anddespitethemyriadfinancialdemandsofthetime,shouldmeetwithawhole-heartedresponsefromtheCatholicpopulationoftheentireState.
Itisadifficultprojectuponwhichtheyhaveembarked,and onewhichwillrequirecourageandpersistencytoseethrough.To procureasuitableandcommodiousbuilding.tofurnishitandto staffitwillbenoeasymatter,butitcanbesolvedifourCatholic peoplearesufficientlyapprisedofitsurgentneed.ThankGod, theChurchhasnevercompromisedwiththemorallaxityofthe timesinanyrespect,andweCatholicsstillcherishvirtueina womanassomethingtohepreservedatallcosts.bothfromareligiousandfromanationalstandpoint.Butidealismaloneisof nouse.Wearecalleduponinthisparticularinstancetoprove oursinceritybydeeds.Andifwefailitwillbeadisgracenot easilyliveddown.Foritisundeniablytruethatthecasualty listsofvirtueandofFaithinyounggirlsismountingtodistressingproportions.TheinroadsofsuchevilintoourCatholicranks canandshouldbestemmednow,forthepriceentailsonlya smallextrafinancialburden.

UnderNationalEmergencyRegulations,manyofourCatholic girlsandwomenaredraftedintotheServicesandotherWarwork, andinconsequenceareobligedtoliveawayfromtheirhomesand families,perhapsforthefirsttimeintheirlives.Thetaskof findingsuitableaccommodationismorethandifficult.TheCity presentsmanypitfallsforgirls,andoftentheyfindthemselvesin veryundesirablesurroundings,whereanythingbutaChristianatmosphereprevails.
Littlebylittle,environment,people'sactionandthinking,reactsuponthelivesofmanyofourCatholicwomen,andwesee themslowlyslippingfromtheirFaith.
Wefacetheworldofto-daywiththeveryevilsofHelllet loose,notonlyintheServices,factories,workshopsandoffices, hutrampantinoursociallife.
AttherecentConferenceoftheCatholicWomen'sLeague.the urgentneedofaCatholicHostelwasdiscussedatlength,andit wasdecidedthatthemembersoftheLeaguexvouldendeavourto raisefundsfortheprocuringofasuitableplace.
Withthisaiminview,theLeagueappealstoallSocialConsciousCatholicstohelpindoingsomethingpracticaltowards helpingputSocietyrightbyhelpingtoputrightmanyofthose whocompriseSociety.

Dr.O'Daydevotedthesessiontoa commentaryon"PatternforPeace," thepamphletissuedonMay16,with theapprovaloftheEpiscopalCommit. teeofCatholicAction,tomarkSocial JusticeSunday.
Thecommentary,whichwasinthe formofadialogueinwhichDr.O'Day answeredleadingquestionsputtohim byaladyspeaker,wasnotablymoderateandfriendlyintoneandfree fromtheundisguisedhostilitythat usuallycharacterisesCommunistcommentaryuponanythingCatholic.Indeed,thespeakeronseveralpointsdeclaredthattheCommunistPartywas inagreementwithaimssetforthin "PatternforPeace."Butinvariably suchexpressionofagreementwasfollowedbythestatementthat,however, suchaimscouldberealised"onlyby Socialism."Bythedisarming,vague word"Socialism"Dr.O'Dayobviously meantSocialismasunderstoodbythe CommunistParty-i.e.,Communism.
