TheestablishmentoftheseEastern Churcheswasbroughtaboutbythe schismsandheresiesthatsoconfused themindsofthepeoplesoftheChurch duringtheearlycenturies.Unhappily, theseparationofEastandWestern ChristendomhasenduredsothattodayhundredsofmillionsofChristians whopeopleEasternEurope,Northern Africa, andWesternAsiafindthemselveswithintheembraceofvariousOrientalrites, namely,Byzantinedivided intomanynationalchurches),Armenian,Syrian,Chaldean,Maronite, andCoptic.

Emigrationwasresponsibleforthe introductionoftheseRitesintothe newworldinamuchlesserdegree.

St.PeterfirstestablishedhisSeeat Antioch,latermovingontoRome.By theendofthethirdcenturytherewere fourPatriarchates-Rome,Alexandria, AntiochandJerusalem,thelatteralwayssubordinatetoAntioch.When inA.D.340itwasmanifestthatConstantinople,thenewnameforByzantium,wasattemptingtoimposeits authorityontheotherPatriarchates, troublearoseandthecontinuedquarrelsofPatriarchs,andthepersistence ofheresies,soonhadanunedifying effectonthepeopleandsappedthe strengthoftheChurch.

AntiochandAlexandriasufferedseverelyandtheirlosscontributedconsiderablytotheaggrandisementof Constantinople.

A.D.451broughtMonophysitism.and thisdeclaredonlyonenatureinChrist.

VERYREV.DR.L.GOODY.

Althoughmorespokenofthanbelieved inmostcases,itcausedabreaking awayfromthecentralunityoftheArmenians,Syrian-Jacobites,andEgyptianJacobites(Jacobitebeingderived fromJames-Jacobus).Thisdivision wasperpetuatedchieflybecauseofthe dislikeoftheEgyptiansandSyrians fortheByzantineoverlords.Theresultofthisheresywastheexistenceof twoPatriarchs-oneinAlexandriaand oneinAntioch-onerepresentingthe Monophysite,orhereticalChurch,and theothertheOrthodox,orTrue Church.

TheOrthodoxgraduallyadoptedthe RiteofConstantinople,andtheexclusiveuseoftheGreeklanguage.From thisperioddatesthetermGreekOr thodoxasageneraldesignationfor Orientalnon-hereticalChristians.

IntheseventhcenturytheMonotheliteHeresydecreedthattherewasonly onewillinChrist,andtheChristian SyriansofMt.Lebanon,nearthefamousMonasteryofMt.Maron,became theMaronites.Eventually,however, theyreturnedtotheirallegianceto Rome,andformanycenturiesthey havebeenCatholics.TheirRiteisderivedfromthatofAntioch,withmany Romanadulterations.

Itwasduringtheseventhcentury thatConstantinoplebecametheleader oftheEasternOrthodoxy,andinits pridebegantoquestiontheauthority ofRome.Forfivecenturies(from thefourthtotheninth),whenPatriarchPhotusfirstarlsapermanent breakwithRome,therewere187years ofschism.PatriarchMichaelCerulariuscompletedtheschisminthemiddle oftheseventhcentury,whichhasremainedtothisday,exceptfora shortreunionaftertheCouncilof Lyonsin1274,andFlorencein1439.
