Decrying the lack of religious and moral training in American schools, Mgr. Sheen declared: "Given another generation of Godless education and we will have tyranny; given religion and morality in education and we will be the most potent Government influence for peace in the world. Religion and Morality. At the outset of his address, Mgr. Sheen said he intended to dwell upon three points: "First, it is a sound American principle that democracy cannot function without religion and morality. Second, American democracy is not making provision for religion and morality. Hence, third, the necessity of restoring religious education in order to preserve democracy." He pointed out that the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independonce declared our inalienable rights
Religion and Democracy. Quoting only Protestants and Jews, to avoid "provoking any prejudices,' in support of his second point, that democracy is not making provision in education for religion and morality, Mgr. Sheen said Nicholas Murray Butler, of Columbia University, contending the pagan element alone in our population is given the benefit of tax money, had observed: "Even the formal prayer that opens each session of the United States Senate and each session of the House of Representatives, and which accompanies each inauguration of the President of the United States, would not a tax-supported be permitted in school." Mgr. Sheen also pointed out that Columbia University was established in 1753 with the chief objective to "teach and to engage children to know God in Jesus Christ," and said an investigation some years ago revealed the same institution "had reduced the number of students believing in God from one in five at entrance, to one in 20 at graduation."
Threat to Freedom. Declaring that America was founded on the principle of the separation of Church and State, Mgr. Sheen declared: "We have no desire to change this principle," but added the nation was not "founded on the separation of religion and the State." Mgr. Sheen said it is "more important now than at any other time to restore religion and morality to education" because "we are entering into a new era of history wherein the grave threat to man's freedom is from the Omnipotent State."
