Thesafeguardofdemocracyand freedomreposesin"theextensionof religiousandmoraltraining,andnot initssuppressionthroughexcessive burdens,"theRightRev.Mgr.Fulton J.Sheen,oftheCatholicUniversityof America,assertedinaCatholicHour radioaddress,inwhichheadvocate! theteachingofreligioninpubliceducationalinstitutions.

Theaddresswastitled"TheChristianOrderandEducation,"andwas theeighthinaseriesof17onthe generaltheme,"TheCrisisinChristendom."Thebroadcastsoriginate atNewYork,andarecarriedona nation-widehook-upoftheNational BroadcastingCompany.

Decryingthelackofreligiousand moraltraininginAmericanschools, Mgr.Sheendeclared:

"GivenanothergenerationofGodlesseducationandwewillhavetyranny;givenreligionandmoralityin educationandwewillbethemost potentGovernmentinfluenceforpeace intheworld.ThenshallAmericabe great.Andwewillloveitnotbecauseitisgreat;itwillbegreatbecauseweloveitinthenameofGodandthatmakesanythinggreat."

ReligionandMorality.

Attheoutsetofhisaddress,Mgr. Sheensaidheintendedtodwellupon threepoints:"First,itisasoundAmericanprinciplethatdemocracycannotfunctionwithoutreligionandmorality.Second,Americandemocracy isnotmakingprovisionforreligionand morality.Hence,third,thenecessity ofrestoringreligiouseducationinorder topreservedemocracy."

HepointedoutthatthesecondparagraphoftheDeclarationofIndependoncedeclaredourinalienablerights

fromGodandcontendedif"wepreserveourindependenceonGod,we willpreserveourindependencefrom tyranny."

PresidentD.Roosevelt,in1940,stated that"practicalstepsshouldbetaken tomakemoreavailabletochildrenand youththrougheducationtheresources ofreligionasanimportantfactorin thedemocraticwayoflifeandinthe developmentofpersonalandsocialintegrity."

"Weareconcernedaboutthechildrenwhoareoutsidethereachofreligiousinfluencesandaredeniedhelp inattainingfaithinanordereduniverse,andintheFatherhoodofGod."

QuotingonlyProtestantsandJews, toavoid"provokinganyprejudices,' insupportofhissecondpoint,that democracyisnotmakingprovisionin educationforreligionandmorality, Mgr.SheensaidNicholasMurrayButler,ofColumbiaUniversity,contendingthepaganelementaloneinour populationisgiventhebenefitoftax money,hadobserved:

"Eventheformalprayerthatopens eachsessionoftheUnitedStatesSenateandeachsessionoftheHouseof Representatives,andwhichaccompanieseachinaugurationofthePresidentoftheUnitedStates,wouldnot bepermittedinatax-supported school."

Mgr.Sheenalsopointedoutthat ColumbiaUniversitywasestablished in1753withthechiefobjectiveto "teachandtoengagechildrentoknow GodinJesusChrist,"andsaidaninvestigationsomeyearsagorevealed thesameinstitution"hadreducedthe numberofstudentsbelievinginGod fromoneinfiveatentrance,toone in20atgraduation."

Butthebigproblemishowtoget thesechildreneducated.Theyhave nochanceofbeingeducatedfora goodpositioninlifebecauseCatholicsdemandabigfeetoeducate children.Collegefeesareridiculous.Needlesstosaythechildren arehandicappedfrombirth,and shouldtheyhaveavocationeven theirownreligiouswon'tadmitthem unlesscashisavailable. Iwould certainlylikeaclearexplanationof myfewremarks,asIcontendifthe ChurchdemandslargefamiliesShe shoulddetailtoHerflockhowtosupportthem,becauseIshudderformy CatholiofriendswhenIhearofhow theypay,pay,foreducationthatreligiousaresupposedtobegiving free."

A.:Now,inreplytothatletter,I wouldliketoreadforyouanotherthat Ihavereceived.Likemanyotherlettersofappreciationthathavebeen addressedtomesincethissessionbe gan,itwasquiteunsolicited.Itis fromaladywhohassignedhername, fromCanningHighway,Bicton,and whowrites:

dreninbothboardinganddayschools, asagreatmanynon-Catholicshavethe impressionthatourschoolsaremakingalotofmoneyoutoftheCatholic parent.Iwouldliketomention,too, thatthepriestshavealsodonemore thantheirshareinhelping,evenpayingmyrent.Iamstillstruggling againstgreatodds,butamverythankfultosayIamabletopayforthe childrenwhoareattendingschoolnow, andthereasonIamwritingthisletter,Father,istotellyoujustwhatthe CatholicChurchdoesdoforthefamily.ImayaddthatIhavealways donemybesttorepayinsomelittle wayforwhatIhavereceivedbydoing someneedleworkfortheSisters'fetes, andcollectingoddsandendsthat wouldhelptobringinafewpounds whenfeteswereheld,andIamsure thatmanyanotherwomancoulddo thesamewithhersparetime.SoI closethislongletter,Father,knowing thatwordscanneverexpressthe thanksthatIowetheSistersandBrothersofourCatholicschools.

A.:TheCatholicChurch,assuch, doesnotinsistontheparticularhabit ormodeofdresswornbythemembersofvariousordersofnuns.The Churchmerelyinsiststheybedressed modestlyandasbefitstheirspecialvocationaswomenwhohavededicated themselvesentirelytoGodandtoHis service.Thedetailsofthedifferent

habitswornbythevariousreligious communities,orOrdersastheyare called,aredesignedandinsistedupon bytheconstitutionsoftheOrders themselves.Usuallytheytracetheir origintothefashionsprevalentatthe timetheFoundressoftheOrderlived, althoughthisisnotalwaysso.The, all,however,dodatebacktothetime whentheconstitutionsofthepartial. larOrderwereofficiallyapprovedby theChurch,andthetraditionsurroundingthemissomethingthatthe nunsthemselvesnowadayswouldbe veryloathtoalterorforego.

AsIsaid,theChurchHerselfdoes notinsistthatallReligiousOrders orwomenshouldbe,asyousay,"so heavilyveiledandclothed."Asa matteroffact,nunsontheMissions andinthetropicsareoftenverylightlyveiledandclothed,asisonlyreasonableinthoseclimates.Herein Perth,forexample,theOrdersengaged inhospitalworkarealsoclothedina lightwhitehabitthatinnowayinter- tele,withtheworktheSistershave todo.

Iknowpeopleoftenwonderwhy manyoftheSisterswearsuchheavy habitsintheheatofsummer,butone mightalsowonderwhymenwear theirheavysergesuitsintheheatof summer.TheSisters,Iknow,don't wishtochange-wemen,Isuppose, haven'tthecouragetochange!

Seriouslythough,theSistershaving givenuptheworldandallthatit meansforGod,toworkforHim amongchildren,theagedandthesick, ortospendtheirlivesinprayerand austerityforyoursinsandmine,dress accordinglywithextrememodesty, andthevariousdetailsofdesignare characteristicofthespiritandtraditionsofthedifferentcommunitiesor Orders.

NoCatholicgirlisforcedtoenter anyConventoranyreligiousOrder. Thosewhohavedoneso,enteredquite voluntarilybecausethevocationappealedtothem,andtheythemselves wouldbethefirsttoresentanyinterferenceinthematterofthehabitof theirOrder,ineverycasehallowedby tradition.Itmightbealittleuncomfortablewhentheweatherisextreme insummer,butsoisaboiledshirtyetmenwillwearthem

AsrowafterrowofgirlsapproachedthealtarrailsinSt.Mary'sCathedralonSundaylast,onecouldnothelpbutbeimpressedbythespirit cftheCatholicGirls'Movement.TheyweretheflowerofourCatholic youngwomanhood,and,inthewordsofHisGracetheArchbishop,their demonstrationevidencedmostforciblythedevotionofthemembersofthe MovementtoChristandtoHisMysticalBody,theChurch.Manyhadmade greatsacrificestobepresent,owingtothedifficultyofgettingtransport, manymorewereunabletobepresentatall.Nevertheless,itwasanunforgettableoccasion,andfittinglycelebratedthefirstbirthdayoftheMovement.HisGracetheArchbishopcelebratedtheMass.andwasassistedby theChaplain,Rev.FatherLalor.

Ineedscarcelyremindyou,mydear girls,ofthesplendidfacilitiesthatare beingaffordedyouasmembersofthis Movement-spiritual,cultural,intellectualandphysical.Alltheseare necessarytoequipyouadequatelyto takeyourplaceasworthycitizensof thecommunity.Ineedscarcelyremindyou,either,thatasaCatholic Organisation,thespiritualsidetakes prideofplace.Alltheotheractivitiesareessentialforthefurtherance oftheMovement,butallaresubordinatedtothespiritual.

AndsoitisthatIappealtoyou thismorningtotakeadvantageofthe splendidspiritualfacilitiesafforded you.TheBlessedSacramentisexposedinyourchapelintheheartof thecity.Maintaintheintensespirit ofdevotiontoyourEucharisticGod andtoHisMother,underwhosepat'TriageyourMovementhasbeenplaced.Themoreyoucultivatethisintensedevotion,themorespiritualyou yourselveswillbecome:themorecloselyunitedwithOurLordandHisblessedMother,andthemoreinfluence youwillwieldamongstthosewith whomyouwillcomeincontact.

Inhiswordstothegirls,theArchbishopsaid:

FirstofallIwishtooffermycongratulationstothemembersofthe CatholicGirlsMovementonthis splendiddemonstrationoffaithand devotion.Thatsomanyshouldbe presentthismorningisallthemore highlycreditablebyreasonofthedifficultyoftransportarrangements.It isasourceofconsolationtous,and mustbeasourceofedificationtoall whohavebeenprivilegedtoseeso manyyoungwomenapproachthealtar railsthismorningtoreceiveOurLord intotheirheartsinHolyCommunion.

ThisMovementwasinauguratedonly oneyearago.Inthattimeithas madephenomenalprogress,itsmembershipbeingnow,Iaminformed,in theregionof640-alleager,active andenthusiastic.ThatsuchaMovementwasnecessaryisevidencedby thesuccessthatithasachieved.It isevidencedbytheenthusiasmwith whichithasbeensupportedbygirls andparentsalike.Thatthatenthusiasmamongstthegirlsandamongstthe parentswillbemaintained,Ihaveno doubt.Withoutthesupportofthe parents,particularly,itwouldnothave achievedthesuccessthatithasachieved,andIsincerelytrustthatthe parentsofthememberswillcontinue toco-operateineverypossibleway withthisgreatworkwhichhasbeen Inauguratedforthebenefitoftheir daughters.ThespiritoftheMovementisthespiritofCatholicAction, andthismorning'sdemonstrationillustratesmostforciblythedevotionof ourCatholicgirlsandyoungwomen toChristandtoHisMysticalBody,the Church.

Thegrowthofvenerealdiseaseisgreatlyexercisingtheminds oftheHealthauthorities,andresultingfromrecentconferences emergestheproposaltointroducetheteachingofsexbiologyatthe secondaryschoolage.Itwasalsoproposedtoemploycautiously theradio,thecinema.andpamphletsonthesexquestiongenerallyandontheclangersofvenerealdiseaseinparticular.Perhaps noquestionsomuchasthisillustratestheinadequacyofapurely seculareducationalsystemwhichfailstogiveitspupilsaneffectivemoraltraining.WedonotclaimthattheStateschools neglecttoindicatethebroadethicaldistinctionbetweenrightand wrong.buttheydoandmustfailtosupplysufficientmotivation forrightliving.Asystemofnaturalethicsisnosubstitutefor supernaturalismwithitsChristocentricmotivesanditsdivine sanctions.Toattempttodivorcemoralityfromreligionisto imperilboth,anditisatthesecross-roadssecularismnowstands.

Whatthesecularschoolsneedisnotonlyasolidtrainingin moralprinciplesandpractice,butaknowledgeofthesanctions whichunderliethemorallaw.Inanybutourmoderncivilisationitwouldseemincrediblethattherecouldbepublicdiscussionsofsexualmoralitywithoutatleastafleetingreferenceto God'slawinthematterascontainedintheSixthandNinthCommandments.Forinourdaynoonecanclaimthatthereisany squeamishnessaboutsexualmatters.Indeed,sincethelastwar, suchmattershavebeentheunendingthemeofthegutterpress, ihefilms,andtheradio.Somuchso,thatchildrenofthemost tenderageacquireanaltogetherprecociousandfalseattitudeto thesevitalfacts.Iftherewaseverafalseargumentitisthat whichcontendsthatthediffusionandopendiscussionofsexmatterstendstosnakemenmoremoralormorehappy.

Youareyoung,lifeisopeningup lieforeyou.Youseekhappiness. Thereisimplantedinyourheartthat desireforhappiness-implantedby Godtobeagoldenlinkbywhichto attachHiscreaturestoHisLoving Heart.Becarefulthatthisdesirefor happinessdoesnotrunintofalsechannels.Youthisaprecioustime.It isrichwithpromisesofthefuture.And Godlovesyouth.Heclaimedthe firstlingoftheflock:andHeclaims youryouth.Andthatisprecisely oneofthemainreasonswhythisCatholicGirls'Movementhasbeenestablished,inordertohelpyoutogive youryouthtotheserviceofGodand HisChurch.

Youwillbebesetbymanygrave dangers,andexposedtobanefulinfluences-allthemoreinthesedayswhen vicestalksthelandwaylayingunwary youth.Youcannotbeyourown guides.Youareunfamiliarwiththe waysoftheworld.Yourparentsand yourpriestsareyourproperguides.

Dofollowtheiradviceevenifyoudo notseethereasonandpurposeoftheir behestsorprohibitions.Obedienceto yourparentsandpriestscanalonesave youfromruin:italonecansafeguard yourinnocenceandsecureyouagainst yournaturalinclinationofunbridled liberty.Manyayoungwomanhas launchedonlife,unmindfulofher mother'stendercall,andthefrailvesselofherdestinywasshattered,and shehasreturneddeploringthemisuseofherlibertywithdisgraceonher fadingbrow.MayGodgrantthatwill neverhappentoonesinglemembersof theCatholicGirls'Movement.

Youwill,Iknow,pardonthisnote ofwarning.Itismeanttohelpyou tobeonyourguardatalltimes.It willsaveyoufrompossiblepitfalls.

Richlycladinmoiresilk,thisfavouredchildmadeaqueenlyfigure amonghermanyattendants-satingownedmaids-in-waiting.Smallboys incostlycourtattireperformedthe roleofheralds,mastersofthecoronationandtrainbearers.Aprofusicn offloraltributesdecoratedthesanctuary,sothatthelargestatueofOur Ladyerectedonatemporaryaltarwas emboweredinrosesandcarnations.

Longbeforethehourfordevotions tobeginthechurchwasover-crowded, sothatbythetimetheQueen'scortegeenteredthenavethecongestion wassodenseastoimpedetheprogressoftheprocession.

HisGracetheArchbishop,attended byRev.FatherRafferty,enteredthe sanctuaryat7.30p.m.TheRosary followedimmediately,andthefulltonedresponsesfromsocrowdedan assemblyspokeloudlyofdevotionto OurBlessedLady.

Thepreacherfortheoccasionwas Rev.FatherMcLaughlin,C.SS.R.,who inhisinimitablestyleextolledthe gloriesofMary,dwellingmainlyon thatmosttranscendantofallherprivileges-herAssumption,whenlife camebackonceagaintotheheartthat hadceasedtobeat,andthoseeyes,so lustrouswithloveofGod,regained theirpowerofvision.Shehadformerlywornthecrownofsorrow,nowshe wastobecrownedinhonour,before somanyofherdevoutchildren,as "QueenoftheMay."

AttheconclusionofFatherMcLaughlin'sdiscourse,thecross-bearer headedtheprocession,followedbyheraldswithlightedcandles.Afterthe Queenandherattendantsfollowed theChildrenofMary,carryingastatue ofOurLadyunderaflower-decked canopy.Thesingingwassoul-stirring -thewholecongregationjoiningin theoldhymnsthatareevernew'Immaculate,""Hail,QueenofHeaven."etc.

Theactualmomentofthecrowning wasthegrandclimaxtowardswhich allthepreviousmovementshadtended.TheyouthfulQueenstoodwith thecrownpoised,apictureofchildlikeinnocenceandloveliness,then placedthegarlandofflowersonthe statue,andwithjoinedhandswaited theconclusionofthehymn,"0Purest ofCreatures."Theemotionofthe crowdedcongregationwasintense,and inmanycasesfoundaventintears.

SolemnBenedictionwasgivenby HisGrace,assistedbyFatherRafferty andFatherKelliher,FatherReidy beingpresentinthesanctuary.After thesingingofthe"Adoremus,"the Archbishoppasseddownthenavegivinghisblessingtoall.

Thusendedabeautifulandtouching ceremony,whichwehopefoundan echointhecelestialcourts.

ThedeceasedSisterwasanativeof NewSouthWales,andspentherea.'; yearsinBombalaandYass.SheenteredSt.Brigid'sin1902,andbegan thentheworkthatshecontinueduntil afewweeksbeforeherdeath.Sister M.Alphonsuswasendowedwithrare giftSasasinger.Tothehonourand gloryofGodshedevotedhergreat talent,turningherbackonthoseallurementsthattheworldlyminded seekafterwithunquenchablezest; sacrificingthehonoursofhighmusical achievementstolivethelifeofaSisterofMercy.

Herworkasateacherborefruitthat extendedfarandwidethroughoutthis State,andearnedforheraplaceof importanceinmusical,educationalcircles,notablyintheworldofsong.Her choirsrankedwiththebestofchoral societies,andwereeverreadyand willingtoserveinthecauseofreligion andcharity.

Joyousnessandgaietyofspiritwere twooutstandingqualitiesinherlife. Shewasmostsympathetictowardsthe needyandafflicted,andinthecapacity ofgiverofbalmtosoreheartsshe drewsoulstoGod.

Afewweeksbeforeherdeath,she enteredSt.JohnofGodHospitalfor medicaltreatment,butthesealof death'sangelwasonher,andshereceivedthecallhomeontheFirstFridayofthemonthoftheSacredHeart.

ASolemnRequiemMasswascelebratedinSt.'Brigid'sChurch,His GracetheArchbishoppresiding,attendedbyRt.Rev.MonsignorMoloney andRev.FatherReidy.Thecele brantwasFatherKelliher,assistedby FatherO'ConnorandFatherO'Farrell. ThePriests'ChoirsangtheMass.A largenumberoflocalclergywaspresent,andSt.Brigid'sChurchwasfilledbymembersofthevariousReligious Ordersandbythefriendsandpupils -pastandpresent,ofthedeceasedSister.

ThecortegemovedfromtheChurch enrouteforKarrakatta,andwaswell attended.VeryRev.FatherMoss readtheobsequiesandgavethelast blessing.Atthegravesidealsowere Rev.FatherReidy,Rev.FatherPerrott,S.J.,Rev.FatherRyan,O.M.I., andRev.FatherKelliher.Thelast riteswereperformedwithsolemnity anddignity,committingtoearththe mortalremainsofSisterM.Alphonsus. Aftersixteenyoungaspirants,deemedworthytoweartheliveryofMary, hadmadetheirActofConsecration, theRosarywasrecitedfortheintentionsofOurHolyFather,thePope, who,ineachsuccessiveyearofwar, hasappealedforaCrusadeofPrayer duringthemonthofMay.

Onestandsamazedatthesuccess whichhasattendedthesestartlingmanifestationsofevil,whichruncompletelycountertothedeepestrootedinstinctsofthehumanrace.Wesee wholenationsofpeopledenyingwhat eachindividualmanmustsurelyfeelin hishearttobetrue.Ableorganisationspreadsthismilitantatheismin constantlywideningcircles,sothat onecannotbutbeapprehensive.

Yet,thanksbetoGod,inspiteof thesegatheringclouds,therearebright spotsonthehorizon.Oneofthemost hopefulsignsofourtimesisthewonderfulincreaseofdevotiontoMary, theMotherofGod.Itwouldseemas if"TheageofMary,"solongandso insistentlyforetoldbysaintsandholy menandwomen,isabouttobeushered in.Mary'splaceintheschemeof man'ssalvationandsanctificationis beingmoreandmorestudiedand preached.Justnowthereisthisextraordinarymovementknownasthe LegionofMary'thatisspreadingdeeprooteddevotiontoOurBlessedLady asnootherorganisationhaseversucceededindoing.Onewondersisit thehugearmyofmenandwomenthat willbringtheworldbacktoGod,as foretoldover200yearsagobyBlessed GrigniondeMontfort.

TheLegionofMaryisdefinedbyits HandbookasanAssociationofCatholicswhoseobjectisthesanctification ofitsmembersbyprayerandactive co-operation,underecclesiasticalguidance,inMary'sandtheChurch'swork ofadvancingthereignofChrist.Itis organisedasanarmyandisfondof speakingtoitsmembersintermsof anarmyandofbattles.ThisiswarrantedbythelanguageofSacredScriptureitself,whichtellsusthatlifeisa continualwarfare,andwhichbidsus liveandactasworthysoldiersof Christ.

Inafewmonths'timetheLegion willbetwenty-twoyearsold.Itbeganinamostinconspicuouswayin thepoorestandoldestpartofDublin.

OneofthefrequenttopicsofdiscussionatthemeetingswasBlessedGrigniondeMontfort's"TrueDevotionto Mary." Aspecialmeetingwasheld onSeptember7,1921,forthepurpose ofstudyingitmorefully.Onthat eveofMary'sbirthdaywasplanned theframeworkofwhathasgrowninto oneofthemostremarkablemovements inthehistoryoftheChurch.Thefirst President,Mrs.Kirwin,wasbornin Australia.ShewasAustralia'sfirst contributiontotheLegion,andanindicationoftheconsiderablepartAustraliawaslatertoplayinLegionary activities.Shewastheonlyelderly personintheroom,butshehadthe affectionandconfidenceofallthe youngpeoplearoundher.Amongst othervaluablethingsshebroughtthe noteofpovertyintothemeeting,for shewasundoubtedlythepoorestpersonintheroom.Thusshecaused therealLegionnotetobestruckfrom thestart-theabsenceofallsocial andworldlydistinctionsinitsmembership.

InthefirstelevenyearsofitsexistencetheLegionhadfounditsway tothefiveContinents.Sincethen, therehasbeenceaselessextension, untilto-daytheLegionprayersaresaid inoverthirtylanguagesanddialects. Therearealmostamillionactivemembers,makingtheLegionthelargest ofallmoderngroupmovementswithin theChurch.Statisticsatheadquartersrevealthattheaveragegrowthis etpresentmorethanthreebranches perday.

Allthishasbeenaccomplishedwithoutanyrealpropaganda.Thegrowth oftheLegionhasbeenentirelydueto therecommendationgivenbyonepersontoanother.Consideringtheundeniablyamazingresultswhichhave beeneverywheresecuredbythesystematwork,therewouldappeartobe somejustificationforthinkingthatwe arytocounter-effortsassuredlyasgreat. newprovidentialmovement,raisedup byGodtohelpatatimeofparticular perilforreligion.Wehaveeveryreasontobelievethatwehaveatlast foundthelong-looked-forSociety.

greatgoodtoasmallnumber;never alittlegoodtoagreatnumber."There isnoonesogoodthathemaynotbe broughtagreatdealnearertoGod.FrequentlywillLegionariesfindthemselvesapproachingpersonswhoareholier farthanthey,buteventhenitisnot forthemtodoubttheircapacitytodo greatgood.Theywillimpartnew ideas,nowdevotions.Theymayenlivenaroutine.CertainlytheycannotfailtoedifybytheircheerfulpracticeoftheApostoliclife.Sowhether theLegionariesaredealingwiththe Saintorthesinner,letthemproceed, confidentintheknowledgethatthey arenotthereintheirownspiritual povertybutastherepresentativesof Mary'sLegion,unitedwiththeirpastorsandtheirbishops,withtheHoly SeeandwithChrist.TheLegion doesnotrequirefromitsmembers wealthorinfluence,butfaithunwavering;notfamousdeedsbutonlyunrelaxedeffort;notgeniusbutunquenchablelove;notgiantstrengthbut steadydiscipline.Unfailingmustbe theserviceoftheorganisationconsecratedtoMarytheVirginmostFaithful.

ImitatingherwhoistheHandmaid oftheLord,theLegionofMary,under herpatronageandguidance,aspires tothehonourofbeingthehandmaid ofthe'MinistersoftheLord.The Legion,whilebeingpartoftheflock itself,aspiresalsotobethelinkbetweentheShepherdandtheflock, facilitatingtheworkofthepastors andenablingthemtobeinconstant personaltouchwithallthesheepof theflock:andontheotherhandkeepingthesheepalwaysunderthewarm benigninfluenceoftheirpastors.Thus, multiplyingthepriest,castingabroad hiszeal,hispersonalityandhisvery word,representinghimeverywhereand toeveryone,theLegionmakesitpossibleevenforabusycitypriestto haverenewedtheliteralfulfilmentof OurDivineLord'swords:"Iamthe GoodShepherd:Iknowmineandmine knowMe."

In1917,somegirlswereaskedbythe St.VincentdePaulSocietytoassist thelocalConferenceinservingfree breakfastsonSundaystopoorchildren.When,lateron,thefreebreakfastswerediscontinued,thewomenremainedtoform,withanumberofVincentdePaulbrothers,arecruiting centreforthewellknownIrishTemperanceSociety,thePioneerTotalAbstinenceAssociation.Forthispurpose regularmeetingswereheld,atwhich fivedevadesoftheRosaryweresaid. Thenreportsweregivenbymembers ofrecruitingcampaigns,andanyother activityinwhichtheymighthavebeen engaged.Therewerealsodiscussions onreligiousanddoctrinalsubjects,as wellasonpracticalmethodsofassistingothersanddoinggoodforthe Church.

TheessenceofLegionworkisitsdesiretoreacheveryindividual,not merelytheneglectful,notalonethe householdoftheFaith,notonlythe poorordegraded,butall.Especially willthepresenceofheresyorinfidelityonalargescalespurontheLegionarytocounter-effortsassuredlyasgreat Ontheotherhand,themissionofthe Legionisnotconfinedtothegraver evils.Thespecialattractivenessof thesearchforsheepthatarestraying, orinthehandsofthethief,shouldnot blindtheLegionarytothefactthat awiderfieldliestohandintheurging onofthatvastmultitudewho,though calledbyGodtosanctify,arecontentingthemselveswithalifeofmereperformanceofessentialduties.If,as FatherFabersays,oneSaintisworth amillionordinaryCatholics,andif,as St.Teresatellsus,onesoul,notaSaint, butseekingsanctity,ismoreprecious toGodthanthousandslivingcommon lives;howdelightfulthentheachievementofsettingthefirststepsofmany inthepaththatturnsasidefromthe eventenoroftheirways.TheLegion mottomaybesummedupinafew words:"Greatgoodmustbedoneto agreatnumber,ifpossible:ifnot,then

Mgr.Sramekhasbeenoneofthe foremostpoliticalandsocialfiguresin hiscountrysincethedayswhenhe wasayoungcurate.Hewasinhis 20'swhenhefoundedorganisations foragriculturalandindustrialworkersandforwomen,allbeingbasedon Catholicsociologicalprinciples.These developedintoastrongpoliticalparty withhimselfasleader.

TheseactivitiesexcitedtheantagonismoftheLiberal,anti-clericalelementsinthecountryandtheyoung priestwasforcedtoleavetwosuccessiveparishes.Eventuallyhewent toBrno,wherehefoundedtheCatholic athleticunion"Orel,"whichquickly grewtoastrengthof400,000members. Inthiswayhepreservedtheallegiance ofCatholicyouthtotheirChurch againsttheproselytisingattacksof theanti-clericals.Soonafterwardshe waselectedheadoftheCentralCatholicWorkers'Union,retainingthe officeuntiltheMunichcrisis.During thisperiodhefoundedtheBankofSt. CyrilandSt.Methodiusforworkers, whichbecameoneofthebiggestinthe country.

In1906Mgr.SramekbecameamemberoftheMoravianSenate,andthe followingyearhewasreturnedtothe ImperialAustrianParliament.Inthe latterhejoinedhandswithotherSlav Catholicsinastrugglefortherights ofhiscountry.

HismainworkfortheChurchfollowedtheemergenceoftheCzechoslovakRepublicafterthelastwar. TheGovernmentwasforyearsantiCatholic,butMgr.Srameksecureda "modusvivendi"betweenthenew StateandtheHolySee.Throughthis hesecuredfortheclergytheirrights andprivileges,safeguardedthesacramentofmatrimonyandgainedfor theChurchtherighttoholdherpossessions.WhentheHusscentenary celebrationsweremadetheoccasionof ananti-Catholicdemonstrationand thePapalNuncioleftthecountryasa protest,Mgr.Sramekrectifiedthesituationandrestoredpeace.

Leavingthecountryatthetimeof theGermaninvasion,hewenttoEnglandviaPoland.Whenthewar brokeouthewenttoParisandthere helpedtoformtheCzechoslovakNationalCommittee.AtthecapitulationofFrancehereturnedtoLondon andwhentheCzechoslovakNational CommitteewasrecognisedasaGovernmenthebecamePremier.

ThedeathofFatherLeoHerbert Barry,atSimonstown,SouthAfrica, recallstheprotestmadebytheHigh AnglicanclergymanonTristande Cunha(loneliestislandintheworld), whenFatherBarry,thenstationedat Simonstown,andNavalChaplainof theCapeSquadron,wenttotheisland inH.M.S.Carlisle.

WhenFatherBarrylandedhefound oneadultCatholic,Mrs.AgnesRogersandherchildren,andothersofCatholicstock.Mrs.Rogershadnotseena priestfor23years.Hecelebrated MassandbaptisedMrs.Rogers'grownupchildren.

ThissooutragedtheAnglicanclergyman,describedas"Priest-in-charge andH.M.Commissioner,"thathe gatheredtogetherhis"Council,"and hadaresolutionpassedrequesting H.M.Commissioner(i.e.,himself)tor asktheSecretaryfortheColoniesto forbidanyCatholicpriesttolandon theisland.TheColonialSecretary turneddownthisproposal.

FatherBarrywasborninManchester,November,1881,andordainedat MillHillJuly,1910.Thatautumnhe wenttothePunjab,NorthIndia.His healthbrokedownin1919.AfterrecuperatinginEngland,heworkedin theBritishCameroonsformanyyears, untilhehadtoreturntoEnglandforte aseriousoperation.In1928hewent toSouthAfrica,wherehespentthe restofhislifeatSimonstown.

Whereverthosequalitiesofapostleshiparenotsedulouslycultivateditis certainthatthenextgenerationwill haveaseriousproblemtofaceinthe lackofallrealinterestintheChurch andofallsenseofresponsibility.Out ofthisfeebleCatholicismwhatgood cancome?Historyteachesthatsuch aflockisreadilystampededevenunto thedestructionofitsownpastors.

Nowformyrequest.Somethingis duetothedevotedworkerswhohave placedtheirsparetimeandtheirtalents atthedisposalofthepriest.Practicallyallofthemarelaboriouslyengagedduringthedayinallmannerofoccupations.Yet,atleasttwoevenings intheweekaredevotedtoLegionary work,whichisoftenofthemosttryingdescription.TheLegionhasnot wonitsresultscheaply.Everything hashadtobeearnedhard.InreturntheLegionariesdonotdemand moneyorkindredthings.Butthey askforco-operationintheworkthey aretryingtodo.Theydonotdesire praiseorappreciationbutatleastthey shouldhavethegoodwillandthe backingoftheentirepeoplewho shouldrealisethattheLegionworks, inaneffectiveway,forthehappiness ofall.Somemaybeabletoundertakeactivemembership.Absolutely everyonecangivethevaluableaidof auxiliarymembership.

AuxiliarymembershipoftheLegion ofMaryisopentoallthosewho,being unabletoassumetheobligationsof activemembership,undertaketohelp intheworkbysayingalltheLegion prayersdaily.PopePiusXonceremarked,"Iwouldconquertheworld ifIhadanarmytosaytheRosary." Toformsuchanarmyistheidealof theLegionwithregardtoauxiliary membership.Itwillreadilyberealisedthatthegreatbandofauxiliary membersistotheLegionwhatmunitionworkersaretoanarmyintimeof war."Createthisimagebeforeyour mind,"saidMr.FankDuff,theFounder oftheLegion,ononeoccasion,"fancy thatyoulookatsomeproudarmy,the proudestarmythattheworldhasever known.Thinkofbattaliononbattanmarchingpast,andmarchingpast, andmarchingpast,untilyouthinkit willnevercometoanend.Theclear cutfaceslookingahead,thenatural couragemadestrongerbytheiron disciplineandbythesenseofanobler causewhichpresidesoverall-everythingshowsforthirresistiblemight.

Yet,asyoulook,reflect.Consider thatarmycutofffromitssourceof supply,sothatfoodanddrinkcannot getthrough.Thedoctorsandmedical servicesarecutoffandcannotlend theiraid.Thatproudarmy,whatisit ifreducedtodisease,ifhunger,wounds andsuchlikethingsplayhavocin it?Thatarmyhasbecomeafrenzied, demoralisedrabble,adangertoits owncause.Thendoyourealisethat, allthetime,itwasdependentupon thegreatinvisiblehostofthosewho fedit,equippedit,guardeditshealth. TheLegionowesthesameprotection toitsauxiliaries."

UnderGodtheLegionisbuiltupon devotiontoMary,"thatineffablemiracleoftheMostHigh."Thetrue LegionaryhasalimitlesstrustinMary, knowingthatbytheordinanceofGod herpoweriswithoutlimit.Working inunionwithherweapproachHim moreeffectively,andhencewingrace morefreely.Indeedweplaceourselvesintheveryflood-tideofgrace,for sheistheSpouseoftheHolyGhost; sheisthechannelofeverygracewhich JesusChristhaswon.Wereceive nothingwhichwedonotowetoapositiveinterventiononherpart."IfI willtomakemyselfdependentonthe Mother,"saysSt.Ildephonsus,"itisin ordertobecometheslaveoftheSon. IfIaspiretobecomeherpossessionit isinordertorendermoresurelyto Godthehomageofmysubjection."

Innocircumstances,however,should thespiritofdependenceuponMarybe madeanexcuseforlackofeffortorfor defectsinsystem.Becauseoneworks withMaryandforhersocompletely, itfollowsthatone'sgifttohermust bethechoicestthatcanbeoffered. Onemustalwaysworkwithenergyand skillandfinesse.

Itisnecessary,therefore,toemphasiseaprinciplewhichmustgovernthe attitudeoftheLegionarytowardshis work.ItisthatLegionariesaremore thanmereinstrumentsofMary'saction.Thereisquestionofatruecooperationwithher,forthepurposeof enrichingandransomingthesoulsof men.TheLegionarygiveshisaction andhisfaculties,andMarygivesherseltwithallherpurityandpower.It thespiritofthispartnershipishonouredbytheLegionary,Marywill neverbefoundwanting.

Whileplacingalimitlessconfidence intheaidofMary,theLegionarymust alwaysaimatthemaximumeffort. Hisgenerositymustalwaysriseas highashistrust.Thisprincipleof thenecessaryinter-relationofboundlessfaithwithintenseandmethodical effortisexpressedinanotherwayby theSaints,whentheysaythatone mustprayasifalldependedonthat prayerandnothingonone'sown efforts;andthen,onemuststriveasif absolutelyeverythingdependedon thatstriving.

Marydesirestogiveprofoundly,but shecannotdosoexcepttothegeneroussoul.Therefore,desirousthather Legionarychildrenwilldrawdeeply fromherimmensity,sheanxiouslyappealstothem,inthewordsofher DivineSon,foraservice'withtheir wholeheart,andtheirwholemind, andtheirwholesoul,andtheirwhole strength."

TruedevotiontoMary,thedevotion towhicheveryfaithfulLegionaryaspires,meansthatyouhaveherbefore themind,atleastinsomeslightway, atalltimes.Sheisleftoutofnothing. WhetheryoupraytotheFather,the Son,ortheHolyGhost,ortoaSaint, itisalwaystobeprayerinunionwith Mary.Sherepeatsthewordswith you.Herlipsandyourlipsformthe wordstogether,andineverythingshe hasapart.Thussheisfarmorethan

atyourside.Sheis,asitwere,in you;yourlifeisyouandshetogether givingtoGodallyoujointlyhave.

ThisallembracingformofdevotiontoMaryacknowledgehandsomely thepartsheplayed,anddailycontinues toplayinthesalvationandsanctificationofsouls.Likewiseitistheeasiestdevotiontoher.Itsolvesthe doubtsofthosewhofearlestgiving toheristakingfromGod.

FatherFabersaysthatMaryisnot halfenoughknownorlovedwithsad resultsforsouls."Devotiontoheris lowandthinandpoor.Ithasno faithinitself.HenceitisthatJesus isnotloved,thathereticsarenot converted,thattheChurchisnot exalted,thatsoulswhichmightbe saintswitheranddwindle,thatthe Sacramentsarenotrightlyfrequented orsoulsenthusiasticallyevangelised. JesusisobscuredbecauseMaryis withheldfromthem:Itisthemiserableunworthyshadowwhichwecall ourdevotiontotheBlessedVirginthat isthecauseofthesewantsandblights, theseevilsandomissionsanddeclines.

Yet,ifwearetobelievetherevelationsoftheSaints,Godispressingfor agreater,awider,astronger,quite anotherdevotiontoHisBlessed Mother.Letamanbuttryitfor himself,andhissurpriseatthegraces

Hisgenerositymustalwaysriseas highashistrust.Thisprincipleof thenecessaryinter-relationofboundlessfaithwithintenseandmethodical effortisexpressedinanotherwayby theSaints,whentheysaythatone mustprayasifalldependedonthat prayerandnothingonone'sown efforts;andthen,onemuststriveasif absolutelyeverythingdependedon thatstriving.

Marydesirestogiveprofoundly,but shecannotdosoexcepttothegeneroussoul.Therefore,desirousthather Legionarychildrenwilldrawdeeply fromherimmensity,sheanxiouslyappealstothem,inthewordsofher DivineSon,foraservice'withtheir wholeheart,andtheirwholemind, andtheirwholesoul,andtheirwhole strength."

TruedevotiontoMary,thedevotion towhicheveryfaithfulLegionaryaspires,meansthatyouhaveherbefore themind,atleastinsomeslightway, atalltimes.Sheisleftoutofnothing.

WhetheryoupraytotheFather,the Son,ortheHolyGhost,ortoaSaint, itisalwaystobeprayerinunionwith Mary.Sherepeatsthewordswith you.Herlipsandyourlipsformthe wordstogether,andineverythingshe hasapart.Thussheisfarmorethan

atyourside.Sheis,asitwere,in you;yourlifeisyouandshetogether givingtoGodallyoujointlyhave.

ThisallembracingformofdevotiontoMaryacknowledgehandsomely thepartsheplayed,anddailycontinues toplayinthesalvationandsanctificationofsouls.Likewiseitistheeasiestdevotiontoher.Itsolvesthe doubtsofthosewhofearlestgiving toheristakingfromGod.

FatherFabersaysthatMaryisnot halfenoughknownorlovedwithsad resultsforsouls."Devotiontoheris lowandthinandpoor.Ithasno faithinitself.HenceitisthatJesus isnotloved,thathereticsarenot converted,thattheChurchisnot exalted,thatsoulswhichmightbe saintswitheranddwindle,thatthe Sacramentsarenotrightlyfrequented orsoulsenthusiasticallyevangelised. JesusisobscuredbecauseMaryis withheldfromthem:Itisthemiserableunworthyshadowwhichwecall ourdevotiontotheBlessedVirginthat isthecauseofthesewantsandblights, theseevilsandomissionsanddeclines.

Yet,ifwearetobelievetherevels: tionsoftheSaints,Godispressingfor agreater,awider,astronger,quite anotherdevotiontoHisBlessed Mother.Letamanbuttryitfor himself,andhissurpriseatthegraces

itbringswithitandthetransformationitcausesinhisoutlookonlifewill soonconvincehimofitsalmostincredibleefficacyasameansforthesalvationofmenandforthecomingofthe KingdomofChrist.
