Itisadocumentoispecialinterest readinconjunctionwiththenew AustralianCatholicstatement-"PatternforPeace"-tobeissuedonSunday,SocialJusticeSunday,throughout theArchdiocese.Itillustratesthe unityandtheprogressivenessofCatholicsocialthought,theinfluenceit isgraduallybringingtobearonpubliclife,andacompleteanswertothe lyingchargesof"reaction"madeby theRedsagainsttheChurch.
"I.Ineachindustrythereshouldbe establishedacouncilrepresentingmanagement(includingownership),techniciansandworkers.
"2.Themembersofthecouncilwill hetheemployers'associationsandthe tradeunionsconcerned.
"Inorderthattheseorganisations mayspeakforallengagedintheindustry,allemployersormanagers,andall employeesineachindustrytobecome membersoftheirassociationortrade union.

Itisinterestingtonotethattheapproachtoreunionhasalteredconsist erablyinrecentyears.Timewaswhen allthatwasaspiredtowasakindof unityinexternals,aloosefederation. ButthenewatmosphereisbestindicatedbyDr.Temple'sreferenceto "realorganicChurchunite."Here.

TheSoviet'sdissolutionoftheCominternhasbeen,forthe mostpart,receivedwithsuchuncriticalenthusiasmatitsface value,thatitseemstolendcolourtothetheorythattheAngloSovietTreatyandtheSoviet-Americanalliancewereuneasycontracts.\Vhilenosincerepatriot,andleastofallaCatholicmindfulofthedemandsofChristiancharity,wishestoharbourunnecessarysuspicionagainsttheRussianpeopleandtheirleaders,there isnopointinconcealingthefactthattheoperationsoftheCominternarenotlightlytobeputasideandforgotten.Onewonders whyMr.EdendidnotrequireitsdissolutionbeforetheAngloSovietTreatywassigned,forhe,leastofallmen,couldclaimto beignorantofitstruenatureandhistory.Norcantheaverage readerbeignorantthatoneofitschiefcharacteristicswasits amazingadaptabilitytoachieveagivenend-iromtheTrojan HorsetotheOutstretchedHand-howlittleitsexternalprofessionscorrespondedwithitsinmostaspirations.
ButgrantingtheSoviet'scompletesincerity,therealissueat stakeiswhateffecttheComintern'sdiSsolutionislikelytohave ontheCommunistorganisationsineverycountry,includingour own.OnemustremarkattheoutsetupontheutterlackofdismaywithNvhichtheannouncementhasbeenreceivedbyCommunistleaders.themoresoastheydisclaimedpreviousknowledgeof Stalin'sintentions.ThereiseveryindicationofthesameJovian calmwhichenabledthemtoreceiveRussia'salliancewiththe arch-Fascist,Germany,withoutqualmorprotest.Thetoneof acceptance,again,indicatesacommonPartyline.TheInternationalhadoutliveditsusefulness,eachnationalCommunistorganisationhadbeenpracticallyautonomousinanycase,etc.But thereisacommondetermination,also,topreserveCommunistactivity.

Thisdisinterestednessandobjectivityis,tosaytheleast,unnatural.Itmightnotbeanunfairparalleltoimaginewhat thereactionsofCatholicsmightbeiftheHolyFathercloseddown theVaticanandannouncedthathewouldhenceforthfunction merelyastheBishopofRome.Itwouldseemtosomethatifthe PrimatesofthevariouscountriesdecidedtocarryonwithCatholicism,thedecisionwouldberatherpointless,forthethingwas universalofitsnature.InthisCommunismhaschallengedthe Church,foritsavowedidealwasaworldclasslesssociety.Hom thiscanbeachievedonanationalbasiswithoutacentraldirective andco-ordinatingbodyisthechiefmysterysurroundingtheobsequiesoftheComintern,anditisamysterysoprofoundandso provokingthatnoonecanbeblamedforwonderingwhetherthere isnotacatchinitsomewhere.

(Extractfromthe"DailyExpress," London,January25,1943., Asmallwispily-builtyoungMalteseinfantryofficerwithspectacles spentthelasthoursofdaylightonthe greenswardbytheroadside,60miles fromTripoli,arguingwithamedical officerwhowantedtosendhimto hospital.
Hewalkedaboutarguing,withfive wounds-oneinthethigh,oneinthe rightarm,andthreeinthechest. "I'mnotgoingtohospital:I'mgoing ontoTripoli,"heinsisted.Hisname isAlbertDimech.
Notonlywashewounded,buthe hadnotlongbeforeescapedfromthe Germans,whohadtakenhimprisoner.
Hehadwalkedbacktoourlinesin timetotakepartinastiffinfantry actionfoughttocapturetwolarge knollsoverlookingtheroad.Itwas inthisactionthathewashit.
ThreehundredmenoftheGerman 90th.LightInfantryhadensconced themselveswithmachinegunsinthis superlativepositioncommandingthe road.
Thelittlelieutenant'smenhadconsiderablecasualtiesinreachingthe Germans,asroughgravesbeneaththe shadowofthehillafterwardstold.
TheGermanswereusingdeeptrenches,butinsidefourhourstheyhad hadenoughofitfromthesemadly braveinfantrymenofours,andhastilywithdrewtotrucksconcealedby theroadside,andthenfledwestwards.

AtthePresentationConvent,Carnarvan,onTuesday,April13,Sister MaryGabrielreceivedthecongratulationsoftheSisters,theParishPriest andfriends,upontheattainmentofthe twenty-fifthanniversaryofherreligiousprofession.Onthisday,inthe year1918,shemadeherfinalvowsof poverty,chastityandobedience,and wasadmittedtotheteachingOrderof thePresentationoftheBlessedVirgin Mary.Sincethattimeshehaslabouredcontinuouslyforthehonourand gloryofGodinthefieldofCatholic educationofyouth.
ComingtoCarnarvonfromPerthin March,1915,SisterGabrielbecamea postulantinthelocalconvent,andfor threeyearspreparedherselfforadmissiontotheOrder.Shortlyafterher professionin1918,shewastransferred toNorthampton,wheresheremained fortwentyyears.In1941shereturnedtoCarnarvon,andafterspending anothertwelvemonthsinNorthamptonshewasagainpostedtotheCarnarvonstaffatthebeginningofthepresentterm.
Thecommemorativecelebrations wereofaprivatenature,andincluded aSolemnMasssungbyRev.Father McKayinSt.Mary's,andatwhichthe schoolchoir(withMissMarySnook attheorgan)renderedMoreno's EleventhMassverysweetly.Atluncheonabeautifulthree-tierjubileecake wascutbytheSistersamidstthecongratulationsandgoodwishesofthe ParishPriestandtheSisters.The cakewasamasterpieceofart.It wasdecoratedbyMr.B.Higgsandpresentedtothejubilarianonbehalfof himselfandMrs.Higgs,whoisanexpupiloftheCarnarvonConvent.
BenedictionoftheBlessedSacrament,atwhichsomeofMoreno'svery enchantingliturgicalmusicwassung bythechoir,concludedtheday'scelebrations.Laterintheeveningthe Sistersenjoyedaprivatemusicalentertainment.
Ex-pupilswillalsorememberSister MaryBridget,formerlyofCarnarvon Convent,butnowofWiluna.She, too,wasprofessedonthesameday inCarnarvonaquarterofacentury ago.Untilafewyearsbackshewas theteacherofcommercialsubjectsand theartofmusic,andverymanystudentspassedthroughherhandsduring thecourseoftheirelementaryandadvancedstudies.BothNunshave beenhonouredbytheirsuperiorsand weretherecipientsofmanycongratulatorytelegramsandmessages.

Paper,asaresultoftheWar,isnow recognisedforwhatitis-aprecious material.Below,anauthoritythrows lightonthemysteriesof"hand-mades" and"machine-mades."
TheChinesepractisedthecraft ofpaper-makingfromaveryremote period-differentwritershavetraced itbacktothesecondcenturyB.C.butitwasnotuntil(after)751that thepreciousmaterialslowlybecame availabletotherestoftheworld.
TheMoorsbroughtthecraftto Spaininthemiddleofthetwelfthcentury.InItaly,too,theartwasestablishedbut,inbothcountries,the Orientalqualitydeclinedinlessskilled hands.
Athrivingindustrywasbuiltupin Italyduringthethirteenthandfourteenthcenturies.Fromthere,itappearstohavespreadtoGermany,althoughthatcountrywasanItalian customeruntilthefifteenthcentury. France,ontheotherhand,acquired herpaper-makingknowledgefrom Spain.
Factsonearlypaper-makinginBritainareexceedinglyscanty.There arethosewhohavestatedweareindebtedtotheCrusadersfortheinformation,whilstotherssetouttoprove itwasanativeindustrybeforethe Tudors;butitisclearthatpaperwas beingproducedatHertford(England) lateinthefifteenthcentury.Also,
itisonrecordthatthepriceofaquire ofsmallfoliopaperatOxfordwas3d. in1355-1336.
TheOrientalsheetwasaverydifferentproducttothepaperweknowtoday.Itwasunusuallystout,glossy anddevoidofanymarkings.TheItaliansintroducedthewater-marktowardstheendofthethirteenthcenturyandsuchwatermarksorhousemarksexistto-day.
Atfirst,theskilledPersianworkmen employedbytheArabspreparedtheir paperfromflaxand,asdemandgrew, theysupplementedragsand,then, addedanyvegetablefibrethatwould serve.Throughtheages,thisformula remainsandnosubstantialdepartures havebeenmade.
Paper,to-day,maybedividedinto twokinds-hand-madeandmachinemade.Manufactureofbothisbegun inthesamewaybut,whereastheformerkindisstillcompletedbyhandprocesses,thelatterismechanically producedlargelythroughtheaidofa Frenchinventionwhichdatesbackto 1798.
Thefirststageistoreducethematerialintoawet"pulp."Inolden times,thiswasdonebyhandwiththe aidofapestleandmortarbut,nowadays,itisinvariablyamachine-pro. cess.

threads,aswellascast-offclothingand furnishingfabrics.Woodis,also,universallyused-thesofterkindssuchas pine,fir,spruce,poplarandbirch, beingpreferred-andsuchgrassesas espartoandbambooareemployed.
Washingand"breaking"arethe firstprocesses,toensurethecleansing andopening-upofthefibre-massesand tocutandcrushtheseaccordingto needs."Rags'areusuallyconverted aftertheyhavebeencutintosmall piecesandwoodisworkeduponinthe formofchips-thereisanothersystem wherewoodisreducedtofibreby grindstones,butthisisimmaterial here.
Washingisamostimportantfeature andsodamaybeusedtoensurea separationofthedirtorotherforeign matter.Ifthefinishedpulpisnot clean,thepaperwillshowstains.
Somehoursandaliberalsupplyof wateraredevotedtothewashingand -breaking"processesand,possibly,a bleachmaybeintroduced.Whenfinished,themixtureiscalled"half stuff"and,forwantofabettercornparison,itmightbelikenedtocottonwoolinaverywetcondition.
Breakingandbeatingtoanappropriatedegreewilladjusttheprocessingandprovideextremelimitso: qualitybetweenablottingandabanknotepaper.Thus,forastrongpaper, cuttingthefibresissubordinatedto bruising,sothattheendsaresplayed andtangled;whereas,foracigarettetype,thefibresarebeatenoutofrecognition.
Inadditiontothebreakingandbeating,thereareanumberofoptional operationswhichmaybeemployedto givespecialcharacteristicstomachinemadepaper,Forexample,asmall quantityofchinaclaymaybeadded tofillthepores,increaseopacityand provideafinertexture;orpigments orsolutionsofdyestuffsmaybemixed fortinting.
Astageisnowreachedwhenthe slurryor"halfstuff"maybetransformedintopaper,eitherbyhandor machine,toproducehand-madeor machine-madesheets.
Beforedescribingtheconvertingprt,cesses,someremarksonvarietiesof papershouldnotbeoutofplace.
"Iland-mades"aretheexception ratherthantherule.Suchpapersare preparedfrom"allrag"pulpsofthe finestqualityandare,usually,used forledgers,banknotes,drawingand water-colourpapers,high-classbooks andexpensivestationery.
Machine-madepapersarefrequently classifiedintoprintings,writings,cover andwrappingpapers,withanimposinglistofsubdivisions.
Amongstprintingswefindart,used forillustrationprinting,whichisreally abasepaperwithacoatingofenamel; antiquepapers,usedforbooks;Bible papersmadefromrag,withanadded amountofmineralmatter;imitation art,thesurfaceusuallybeingprovided byasizingtreatmentandcalendered papers,whicharereferredtoagain later.
Havingmentionedsomeofthevariationsofthepaper-maker'sart,itis nowproposedtoconveyinageneral seas'theconversionof"halfstuff"into a"hand-made"or"machine-made" pieceofpaper.
First,theoriginalsectioncftheindustry-"hand-mades"-wherecraftsmanshipsurvives.
The"halfstuff"isemptiedintoa storechestinorderthatitmaybe drawnoffasdesired,intoavat.In thisvat,thematerialiscontinually stirredandkeptwarm,
Intothisvat,thevatmandipshis mould-alightframecoveredwith wire-andremovesenoughpulpfor hispurpose.Thisheshakeswelluntil thestuffhasarrangeditselfintoathin sheet,atthesametimepreventingany overflowbymeansofa"deckle."A cohesivesheetbeginstoformasthe waterdrainsandthemouldistheninvertedontoathickfelt,sothatthe sheetisleftrestingonthis.
Feltsandsheetsarepiledandwhen abatchhasbeencompleted,itisplacedunderahydraulicpresstosqueeze outsurpluswater.Afterthisoperation,thefeltsandwetsheetsareparted,theformertobereturnedforfurtheruseatthevatandthelatter, afterinspection,toreceivefurther pressingstoremoveanysignsoffeltmarks.
Next,thesheetsmustbesuitably driedinloftsoronlinesand,atthis stage,itisknownas"waterleaf."The followingprocessissizingandthismay beahand-dippingoramechanical operaitontoensureagoodsoaking. Afterdressing,surplussizeissqueezed awaybypressingandsomepipersmay receivetwocoatsofsize,withaseparatedryinginbetween.
Exceptfordrying,thepaperisnow readyforsalebut,beforebeingpacked,itisexaminedforblemishes,hairs, stainsandsoon,aseverysheetmust beperfect.
Thesheetsare,ofcourse,muchlargerthanwenormallyuseand,oncut-tosize"handmades"the"deckle"can usuallybefoundononeormoresides.
Mechanisedpaper-makingfollows alongsimilarlinesbutmachine-operationstaketheplaceofskill.
The"stuff"ispassedtothe"wet end"inahighlydilutedstateand graduallyflowstoanendlesswoven wire,whereisitconvertedintoacontinuouswebofweb-paper.Wateris extractedbygravity,suctionandpressureanda"watermark-maybehere impressed.
Asthewebprogresses,itpasseson tosupportingfeltsandpressure-rolls, whichconsolidateitandextractfurthermoisture.Nextfollowsheated cylinders,throughwhichthepaperis conveyeduntilithasasurface,isdryandreadytobereeled,
Itwillbeobservedthattheoperationsarevirtuallythesamebothin "hand-mades"and"machinemades," but,withmechanicalaid,thewhole processiscontinuousandcarriedout byonehugemachine.Thepapermay be90inchesormorewideandmanyhundredsoffeetcanbeproducedper minute.
Thepaperinreel-formmaybesized asafurtheroperationonaseparate machineoraveryhigh-finishedappearance-polished-canbeappliedby passingthewebthroughaseriesof suitablecalenderingrollers.
Finalfinishingoperationsinclude cuttingthewebintosheetsofpredeterminedsizes,sorting,countingand packing.Alternatively,reelsmaybe reducedinwidthbyunwinding,slittingandrewindingtheweb,ascertainpapersareusedinrollform.EricGurd.
