ThebooksoftheOldTestament, sometimesknownasthePoeticBolks, areseveninnumber,Theyuere writtenatvarioustimes'roil:1000 B.C.to180B.C.byinspiredauthors. Theirname,"Didactic,"welldescribes theirmostgeneralcharacteristic,for totheHebrewsofold,asalsotothe Egyptiansatlarge,theyhavealways beenawonderfultreasuryofvaried andusefulinstructions.Aswemight naturallyexpect,thesebooks,being poetry,arecharacterisedbydignity oflanguage,boldnessofmetaphor, andtheuseofArchaicexpressions.

LetustaketheBookofJob,which dealswiththedifficultythathasat alltimesintriguedman-theproblem ofevil,Initself,itisuniversally acknowledgedtobethemostbrilliant literarygemoftheOldTestament,and aprominentauthorityhaswrittenof it:"Beyondanydoubt,theBookof Jobisthehighestproductofthe poets'art;itbringstoafocus,asit were,allthatHebrewpoetrycouldcontribute,andstandsoutasoneofthe noblestpoeticalcompositionsofany ageoranypeople."

Anexampleofthisbeautyisgiven whenGodflashesforthfromthestorm theswift,directanddelicatesarcasm ofhisqueriesregardingtheconstitutionoftheworldandthegovernment oftheuniverse:

"Hastevergivenorderstothemorn? Orshownthedawnofdayitsplace?

Theprimeproblemtreatedisnot directlysolved:themysteryofthe presenceofevilinGod'screationremainsamystery,butthereasonfor thisisindicated:Man'smindcannot graspthecompletenatureofGod,and hencecannotplumbthedepthsofHis Providence.However,thereisthis practicalconclusion:ManhassufficientevidenceevenfromNaturetojustifyhisplacinguttertrustinGod, sinceHecontrolsallthings.Thisis hintedintheverybeginningofthe
