ThisfactofChrist'sconferringa supernaturallifeonmanistheessentialthingofallHisteachingabout man.Unlessamanreceivethissup- ernaturallife,hecanhavenopartwith Christ.OurLordreferredtotheacquisitionofitastobeingbornagain. oonsequentlyProtestants,atleast thosewhobelongtotheoldersects, usuallyreceivebaptism,andreceivethe supernaturallifethatChristgivesto men.Farfrombeingpagans,theyacquireapositionintheCatholicChurch itself,buttheydonotbecomemembersoftheCatholicChurchuntilsuch timeastheyfreelyadheretoitbyrenouncingwhateverisfaultyintheir beliefandarereceivedintotheCatholicChurchbyadulyauthorisedperson.TheCatholicChurchdrawsa sharpdistinctionbetweenbaptisedProtestantsandpagans.Forinstance,if twounbaptisedpeoplegetmarried, theyformanaturalcontract,whichis howeverbindinginthesightofGod: iftwobaptisedProtestantsgetmarried,eveninaregistryoffice,theyconferononeanothertheSacramentof Marriage.Iftheydonotputsome obstacleofill-willintheway,thatSacramentgivestoeachanincreaseofsupernaturallifeorsanctifyinggrace. Sothereisadifferencebetweenbigotryandfrankness;itwouldbebigotryandfalsehoodformetosaythat thetwoSacraments-BaptismandMatrimony-thatcanbeadministeredby laymencouldnotbevalidlyadministeredbyamemberofaProtestant sect;itisnotbigotrybutfranknessfor metosaythatitisonlytheirinabilitytoseethatChristcommittedthe administrationoftheseSacramentsto HisChurchthatexcusesProtestants fromreceivingthemwithoutconscious referencetotheCatholicChurch.

Unlikemostofhiscomrades,John hadlefthomeyearsbefore.Atthe timehewasonlyeightyearsold;now hewasalmosttwenty-three.Though hehadbecomehardenedinsoldiering andhadacquiredmanyofthevicesinsteadofthevirtuesofthemanlyprofession,thereweretimeswhenhis thoughtsturnedtothehomehehad left.Thevisionofalittle,grey-hairedladywouldcometohimnowand again.Hecouldseeherenshrinedin

thedoorwayofthehomehehadonce known,asmileonherwitheredcountenance.Butquicklythevisionwould fadeandhewouldfindhimselfvery muchasoldierinaforeignland.He couldnotknowthatduringthevision, andbeforeitandafterit,hismother wasprayingforhim-nevergiving himupforlost,eventhoughyearspass edwithneverawordfromhim.

Inthefifteenyearshehadbeenaway fromhomehehadlostmuchofhis youthfulpiety,Hehadtakenodd jobsandhadhoardedwithstrangers whodidnotworryabouttheirroomers'morallivessolongastheygot theirrent.Henolongerprayed:his faithwasalmostgone.Attheageof twenty-twohehadbeenconfronted, withtheprospectofgoingtowar.Europehadbeenoverranbythearmies offanaticdictators.Recruitingofficersweredanglingthebaitofadventureandrichesinfrontofyoung, healthymen.Finally,Johngaveup hisjobandenrolledinhiscountry's army.

Thisstorymightwellbethatofany ofourservicemento-day.Yetithappenedoverfourhundredandfifty Yearsago.Justthreeyearsafter ChristopherColumbushadplantedthe crossonAmericansoil,thisJohnwas borninMontemayor,Portugal.His parentswerepoor,piousCatholics. Beingtheironlyson,hewastheentire objectofalltheiraffection.

AttheageofeighthesuddenlydisappearedfromPortugalandhisparentswerenevertoseehimagain. Whetherhewaskidnappedorseduced, historyhasnotrecorded,buthenext appearsatthetownofOripesainthe kingdomofCastile.Littleisknown

hewasleadingoccurredwhenhiscompanywasonalootingexcursion.He fellfromhishorseandwasseriously injured.Onlythebraveryandskill ofhisfellow-soldierssavedhimfrom thewrathofthedispossessedcitizenry. Whileonthegroundtheprayersof hischildhoodweresuddenlyonhislips andhecalleduponGod'sMotherto savehim.

Anothertimehewasappointedto guardagreatamountofbooty.When hisreliefcameitwasdiscoveredthat someofthetreasurehadvanished. AllcasttheiraccusationsuponJohn andonlytheinterventionofanofficer savedhimfromthefiringsquad.

Finallyhiscompanywasdisbanded. Almosttwentyyearshadpassedinsoldiering:twentyyearsofriotousliving.AtoncehesetoutforPortugal. Hismotherhadoftenbeeninhis dreams.Uponarrivingathishome townhewasinformedbyarelative thathismotherhaddiedofabroken heartbecauseofherson'sdisappearance.Hisfatherhadspenttheremainingyearsofhislifeinamonastery. Johnwassickatheart.Hesawhimselfasthecauseofhismother'sdeath. Reflectionshowedhimthathehad likewisebeenthecauseofhardship formanyothers.Noonetrustedhim. Asanex-soldier,hishonestywasquestionedandgoodpeoplewouldnottrust

ReturningtoSpain,heboughta wheel-barrowandbecameapedlarof religiousarticles.Nextheopeneda littleshopandbegantosellpious books.Hefrequentedaneighbouring churchwhereBlessedJohnofAvila preached.Thewordsofthissaintly manstruckaresponsivechordinthe heartoftheone-timesoldierwiththe resultthatJohnbecamemoreanxious tosacrificehimselfentirelyforothers. ThemanofGodhadpreachedasermononthewisdomofbecomingafool forthesakeofJesusChrist.John tookthesewordsliterally.Assoonas thesermonwasendedhehurriedfrom thechurch.Totheutterastonishmentofthegoodpeoplehethrewhimselfontheground.Hebegantopull outhishair,tobeathisbreast,andto cryformercy.Herolledinthemud atthefeetofthepassers-by.The morethepeoplelaughed,themore Johnpersistedinhismadactions,On anotherdayheenteredthecrowded churchandthrewhimselfonthefoot oftheaisle,scratchinghisfaceandbewailinghismisery.Heactedthepart ofthefoolsowellthatheattracted theattentionoftheauthorities.Fin allyhecontrivedtogethimselfnut intoanasylumwherehewaslooked uponasthefoolamongfools.But BlessedJohnofAvilasawthroughthe goodman'sruseandmadeJohnsee thatthistypeoffollywasnotthewisdomofChrist.

Nowherentedahouseandbeganto takeintownriff-raff.Tramps,vagabonds,cripples,everytypeofsufferer wastheobjectofhissolicitude.Hegot themclothes,beds,andfood.He bathedthem,anddressedtheir wounds.Attimeshewouldlaughand jokewiththem.Againhewouldbe serious,urgingthemtoprayandto maketheirpeacewithGod.Friends begantogivehimalms.Atlastthe BishopofGranadabecameinterested andgavehimahospitalandadistinctivegarbtowear.

Onthisoccasionhetoldthebishop thefollowingstory:Oncewhenhewas goingaboutthestreetsofGranadahe metalittlechildpoorlycladand barefoot.ThechildaskedJohnto carryhim.AtthetimeJohn'shealth wasnottoogoodandafterjourneying awhileheproposedtostopatafountainbytheroad.Thechildgotdown fromhisshouldersandsaid,"Johnof GodGranadashallbeyourcross" Thenhedisappeared.Onhearingthis thebishopreplied,"ThenJohnofGod shallbeyournamealways."

ForthenextfifteenyearsthepeopleofGranadasawtheworkofJohn ofGodcontinuetogrow.Despitethe effortsofmanytofrustratehislabours. thenumberofpatientsinhislittlehospital 4, continuedtoincrease.Allthe whileJohnsuffered.Hewascalled (ContinuedonBackCover.)

Consideringthepresenttransportdifficultiesandthefactthatmanyof theirmembersareintheArmed Forces,theattendancewasgood.A pleasingfeatureofthefunctionwas thehighpercentageofundergraduates inattendance.

Justpriortoeighto'clock,membersjoinedinprocessionneartheChapterHall,andproceededtotheCathedral,ledbyHisGracetheArchbishop andtheSociety'sChaplain,Rev.Father J.Murphy,B.A.,Lt.D.Withsomany graduatesabsent,theusualvarietyof colourfulhoodswasnotapparent,but mostundergraduatesworecapsand gowns.

HisGracetheArchbishop,Dr.Prendiville,celebratedMass,anddistributedCommuniontothelargebodyof Newmanmembers.

Theoccasionalsermonwaspreached byFatherMurphy,whoreminded thosepresentthattheyhadaspecial dutytoperform.

Aftertherecitationoftheopeningprayers,thePresident,Mrs.Maxwell,ina fewwell-chosenwords,welcomedRev. FatherHaughandthemembers,and thankedthemfortheirhelpandcooperation.Sheaskedthatonthat morningallwouldconfinetheirdiscussionstosuchmattersaswouldfurther theinterestsoftheLeagueinitsfuture workings.FatherHaughwasthen calledontoaddressthegathering.

YouhaveassembledatthisConferencetodiscussmattersofvitalimportancetotheLeague.Guidedbyyour rules,andwiththepracticalexperience ofthepastyear,thesediscussionsand exchangeofviewswillknitmoreclosely thetiesofcharityandunderstanding l/etweenthevariousbranches.

Asaresult,memberswillreturnto theirrespectiveparishesglowingwith renewedenthusiasmforunselfishsocial endeavours.Letmeremindyouat theoutset,thatyoutakeintheseproceedingsfirstandforemostasachosen bandofCatholicwomen.representing inyourownsphere,over20,000Catholic womenofWestAustralia.

Thereforeaheavyresponsibilityis laiduponyourshoulders-allthegreaterowingtothedifficultanddangerous timesinwhichwelive.Youhaveto playyourpartvaliantlyinthemanysidedactivitiesoftheWarEffort.But, youmust,asCatholicwomen,view ^withalarmtheimmoralinfluences whicharedegradingto-daythedignity /IAustralianwomanhood-andunderminingthefabricofChristiancivilisation.

Youhaveachievedfineresultsduring thepastyear,astheannualreport eloquentlyshows.Membershavevied withthoseofmuchlargerorganisations instreetappeals,canteenservice,and variousformsofpatrioticwork.The voiceoftheCatholicWomen'sLeague has,throughyourrepresentatives,been heardandrespectedatseveralconferencesofwomeninthiscity,andyour self-sacrificingeffortshavewonwellearnedgratitudefromthoseconcerned.

Whileofferingmycongratulationson theyear'srecord,Iwantyoutostrive evenmoreearnestlyintheimmediate future,withhigherandnoblerendsin view.

AsCatholicwomen,youmusthold alofttheTorchofFaithto-dayinthe midstofinfidelity;youmustbestandard-bearersofChristianmoralityin thisageofimmorality.

I ThisConferenceofCatholicWomen, emphaticallyprotestsagainstthe transferofmothersoffamiliesfrom thedutiesofhome-lifetothemunitionfactory.Thisisanevilwhich affectsthelifeofthenationatits verysource,i.e.,familyandhome. Noglibtalkaboutcreches,hayeverlavish-nosocialistichysteria aboutkindergartensandmasseducation.canusurpthematernalcare andguidanceandaffectionofthe Christianhome.Thesemarriedwomen,who,luredbytheprospectof highwages,areleavingtheirchildren tothemercyofstrangers,arebetrayingtheirGod-givenposition.AsCatholicwomenweprotestagainstthe threattothelifeofthehomeandthe ommonwealthwhichwelove.

t2)Thealarmingincreaseinjuvenile crimeiscausinggraveconcernonall sides.Buttherearefewwhohave theintelligenceorthecourageto tracetotheircausestheyouthful viciousnessofourday.Itispartof theharvestwearereapingfromGodlesseducationandthelackofparentalcontrol, FurgenerationsthemajorityofAustralianchildrenhavebeeneducated innon-religiousschools-withoutany solidbasisofresponsibility.And duringthosecriticalyearsofadolescenceareleftwithoutanyreligious restraintstosavethemfromsurging passions.Thissystemisafertile fieldforsowingtheseedsofvice, which,soonerorlater,willripeninto aharvestofcrime.

WeCatholicwomeninsistuponthe rightofparentstoeducatetheirchildrenaccordingtotheirconscience. Hencewegloryinourownreligious schools;andwhateversacrificeswe havetomakeintheirsupport,we knowthattherethechildsmindis storedwithknowledge-hiswill strengthenedbyvirtuoushabits,and hisyoungheartsteeledagainstvice.

1.3)ThisConferencestandsbythesanctityandpermanencyofmarriageinstitutedbyGod.Wemaintainthat nohumanpowercandissolvethat contract.Weexhortparentstobe faithfultotheirdutiesasheadsof families-toteachtheirchildrenby wordandexample-toasserttheir authoritywhennecessary-tosee thattheirchildrenareindecentcompanymindfulofthewordsofthe HolyGhost:"Ifanymanhavenot careofhisown,especiallythoseof hisownhousehold,hebathdenied theFaithandisworsethananinfidel."

Atnotimeinhistory,assuredlyatnotimeinAustralianhistory,hastherebeenmoreurgentnecessitytolooktoMary,the HelpofChristians,astheinvinciblebulwarkagainsttherising hordesofheathenism.Whateverpaganism inthepast duringtheChristianera,itwasatleastisolatedandknownfor whatitwas.Thenewpaganism,whichinrealityisveryold,is moresubtleandinvidious.Itisclothedto-dayintheacademic robesofscience,intheplausiblepleasofeconomicpolity,evenhas itbeenincorporatedintheStatuteBooksofnationswhichChristiansheretoforehavebeenrequiredtoobeysincetemporalrulers derivetheirauthorityfromGod.Soveiledisthepaganismof to-day,sotransformedalmostintoanangeloflight,thatithas penetratedtoeverystratumofsociety,toalargeextentunnoticed andunidentifiedevenbyChristians.

AnotherpointwhichtheArchbishop stressedwasthatofthespiritualwork oftheLeague.Hestatedthatevery membershouldhaveathoroughknowledgeofherreligioninordertopass thatunderstandingofthingsspiritual toothers.OnlythuscouldtheLeague havethetrueinfluenceforgoodinthe community.Thegreatestenemyof theCatholicChurchto-daywas,hesaid, ignorance.Hethereforesuggested that,undertheguidanceofFather Haugh,aseriesoflecturesonthedoctrinesoftheCatholicChurchshould begiventomembersoftheLeague.

HisGracealsomentionedtheCathclicGirls'Movement,andthegood workitwasdoing.Heappealedto allCatholicmotherstogivethework ofthemovementeverysupportandencouragement,forbysodoingtheywouldbehelpingthegirlstobecome goodCatholiccitizens.

In hisconclusion,HisGraceexpressed appreciationoftheharmoniousway inwhichthedifferentbrancheswere workingonewiththeother,andhe wishedthemeverysuccessinthe futureineveryoneoftheiractivities.

TheybecameofacuteinterestwiththecomingoftheAbyssinianwar,the Spanishwar,andthepresentworldwar.InthelikelyeventofMusso lini'sfallandthebreak-upoftheFascistregime,theywillbeamatterof urgentconcern.Mosttimely,therefore,istheappearanceofanexhaustive workentitled"ChurchandStateinFascistItaly,"writtenbyProfessorD. A.Binchy,ofUniversityCollege,Dublin.

Itisseldomthatoneencountersa booksocomplete,sodispassionate,so authoritative.Itrunsto774pagesof tightlypackedandwell-integratedmaterial.ProfessorBinchyseemsto havereadanddigestedeverythingof relevancetothesubjectinwhatever languageitwaswritten.Hisattitude isoneofcooldetachment.HisdetestationofFascismisevident,but,insteadofrailingatit,heusesthefar moreeffectivedeviceofparadingand dissectingitsevilsandabsurdities.So skilledawriterishethat,throughout along,closelyarguedtext,onenever losesinterestorsinksinamorassof detail.Hisstyleisdistinguishedfor itsclarityandverve.

ButtheburdenoftheworkisthehistoryofVatican-Fascistrelationsinthe decadeabovementioned.

TwoStrongPersonalities.

Twostrongpersonalitiesdominate thestorywhichProfessorBinchyhas totell,thatofthelateHolyFather andthatofMussolini.

InsketchingthecharacterofPius XI.theauthorsaysthatonenoteis pre-eminent:"beforeeverythingelse, courage."AnItalianworkingman, speakingofthe toProfessorBinchyin1938,calledhim,withobvious respect,"theoldlion."PiusXIwas atrueLombard."Hehadtheshrewd. ness,thetenacityofpurpose,thecompletefreedomfromsentimentalityand impulsivenesswhicharecharacteristic ofthathard-headedstock....Hewas athismostimpressiveinadversity, cool,inflexible,andserene."When engagedinapassageatarmswiththe Duce,hebroughtalltheresourcesof hiskeen,balancedmindtobearonthe frequentlyextravagantpronounce-mentsofhisadversary.Hetorethem tobits,exposedtheirweakness,and refutedthemdevastatingly,oftenwith tellinghumourwhichtherankandfile oftheItalianpeoplehugelyrelished.

ButtheDuce,saystheauthor,isnot thebuffoonthatsomewouldhaveus thinkhim.Certainlyheisnotthedemigodthatpartypropagandadepicts,no moreisheasawdustCaesar.Heis hold,"anunshakablebelieverinhimselfandhisstar."("Evento-day?"one wonders1 Principlesmeannothing

tohim;hechangesthemasreadilyas hedoeshisclothes.Heis"boundby noorthodoxies,noteventhosewhich hemayimposeonhisfollowers.His approachtoallproblemsisinstinctive ratherthanintellectual."

ItisnotoriousthatinhisSocialist dayshewasrabidlyanti-clerical,a "priest-eater."Hisfirstpublication wasapamphletentitled"GodDoes NotExist,"Sixyearsbeforehebecamepremier,hisnewspaperrana seriesofarticleswhichBenedictXV styled"terribleblasphemiesuttered againstthepersonofOneDivineRedeemerbyamanwhounjustlyproclaimshimselftobearepresentativeof theItalianpeople."WhenheorganisedtheFascistParty,hemadeone ofitsobjectivestheconfiscationofall Churchproperty.In1919hewrote, "Detestingaswedoallformsof Christianity,thatofJesusaswellas thatofMarx,wefeelanimmense sympathywiththemodernrevivalof thepaganworshipofstrengthand courage."

NegotiationsandSettlement.

Onceinpower,herecognisedthe necessityofsettling"theRomanQuestion,"thatis,thestateofwarthat hadexistedbetweenItalyandthe VaticansincetheseizureoftheremainderofthePapelStatesin1870, thebreakingofallrelations,andthe self-imprisonmentofthePope.Mussolinicouldnothavebeenunawareof Crispi'sstatementthat"thegreatest ofItalianswillbehewhosucceedsin theRomanQuestion."The Ducehasapassionforpositiveachievement,andhedeterminedtotacklethe veryproblem,"whosesolution,hefelt, wouldgratifytheinarticulatedesireof millionsofhiscountrymen."

Furthermore,hehopedtoenlistthe supportoftheoldestandstrongest forceinItalianlifefortherevivalof theRomanEmpire,tobringthe ChurchinItalyintohisorbit,ifhe could,andevenunderhiscontrol,and tomakewhateverindirectusehemight ofthevastinternationalprestigeof theVatican.

Itiscertainlynofairrepresentation ofhisbooktopassoverthesettlement asbrieflyaswedohere.Butourconcerniswiththelargerquestionofthe allegedconsonanceofFascismandCatholicismintheoryandtheiralleged co-ordinationinpractice.Onthis questionProfessorBinchythrows floodsoflight.

Totheirshame,certainCatholicpublicistshavefosteredthenotionthat MussolinihasbeencompletelyconvertedfromhisformervirulentantiCatholicism,nottosayatheism,and hasbecomeadevoutCatholic.Pious legendsofanotabletenuoussorthave beenadvancedinproofofthisasser-

tion.Realevidenceisabsent.AlmosteveryoneinItalywhomtheauthoraskedwhetherMussoliniwasa Catholic,answeredinthiswise,"MussolinihimselfisnotaCatholic,but heisfriendlytowardstheChurch." "TheDucedoesnotaccepttheCatholicfaith,"saysProfessorBinchy,"but hedoesaccepttheCatholictradition, sodeeplyrootedintheItalianspirit." Inotherwords,forreasonsofhard practicality,MussolinihascometorecognisethattheItalianpeopleareimmemoriallyCatholic.Thisargues nothingastohisownpiety.

Thebrandofideologywhichthe Ducemanufacturesandretailsdiffers radicallyfromCatholicism,andthatin manyways.

First,FascismdeifiestheState.The Stateissupreme,all-absorbing,the sourceofthepeople'sbeingandthe endoftheireverythought,wordand action.TheindividualhasnoexistenceapartfromtheStateandnodestinybeyondtheState.Thereforehe hasnoinherentdignityorrights.

Secondly,inkeepingwiththeerror firstnoted,Fascismclaimsprimary andunchallengeablecompetenceinthe domainofconscience.Ithasitsown autonomousmorality,"immanentand self-generated."Mussolinihassaid, "TheState,asconceivedandrealised 1,Fascism,isaspiritualandethical unitfortheorganisationofthenation, anorganisationwhichinitsoriginand growthisamanifestationofthespirit.

Transcendingtheindividual'sbrizf spelloflife,theStatestandsforthe immanentconscienceofthenation"

TheChurchhasalwaysmaintained thatthemorallawisindependentof thewillofmenorofStates.GodWho madeusandtoWhomweareresoon sible,hasestablishedthelawsofour being.Tothesewemustconform, TheStatecannotrepealthem;itcannotevenchangethemindetail:much lesscanitframesubstitutesforthem accordingtoitspleasure.PiusXIrepeatedlyinsistedonthis,andbluntly, inhiscontroversieswiththeFascists.

Thirdly,Fascismglorifieswarand violenceforitsownsake."Waralone keysupallhumanenergiestotheir maximumtensionandsetsthesealof nobilityonthosepeopleswhohavethe couragetofaceit,"Mussoliniwrote. Andagain,"Idonotbelieveinperpetualpeace.Nay,more,Iholditto beharmfulanddestructiveofthefundamentalvirtuesofman,whichonly manifestthemselvestothefullin bloodyenergy."Asforviolence,Mussoliniandhisechoeshavelaudeditas inherentlygood."Nearlyallmylife long,"theDucehasdeclared,"Ihave stoodupforviolence."Certainlythe Fascistshavecarriedoutinpractice theirleader'srecommendationofviolence,beatingupandevenmurdering thosewhowontheirdispleasure.

ThattheChurchcondemnsanddeploresthiscultofwarandofviolence requiresnoproving.Incessantlythe successivePopeshavepleadedfor peaceandhavescoredaggressionand brutality.

RacialismDenounced.

Fourthly,Fascismadvocatesanarrowandrabidnationalism,anarogant andfanaticexclusivenesswhich,ineffect,deniestheunityofthehuman family.ButPiusXIsaidplainly, "Bewareaboveallthingsofexaggeratednationalism.""Thereisroom,"he said,"forajustandtemperatenationalismassociatedwithviciousversion ofnationalismsponsoredbytheFascistsheoutspokenlyreprobated.

Fifthly,atleastsinceHitler'svisit toItalyin1931,Fascismhasbeen stronglyanti-Semitic.Racialistdecreeswerepromulgatedafterthat happyevent,andtheFascistPress,

withthefoul-mouthedFarinaccileadingthepack,wentoffonanorgyof Jew-baiting.

PiusXI'sreplywasinstantaneous andvigorous.Hecalledtheracialist standoftheFascists"regularapostasy.""Itisnolongermerelyaquestionofafewerroneousideas,"hesaid, "itisthewholespiritofthedoctrine thatisopposedtothefaithofChrist.

Ifthereisanythingworsethan thevarioustheoriesofracialismand nationalism,itisthespiritthatdictatesthem.Thereissomethingpeculiarlyloathsomeaboutthisspiritof separatismandexaggeratednationalismwhich,preciselybecauseitisunchristianandirreligious,endsbybeing inhuman."

NoonecanhaveforgottenthemagnificentstatementmadebytheHoly Fatherinthelast,pain-filledmonths ofhislife,"ThepromisemadetoAbrahamandhisdescendantswasrealised throughChrist,ofWhosemystical Bodywearemembers.ThroughChrist andinChristweareAbraham'sdescendants.No,itisnotpossiblefor Christianstotakepartinanti-Serniti,m'pirittiallyweareJews."This drewafuriousdirectanswerfromMussolini,includingacharacteristicreferenceto"poorhalf-wits."

DirectionoftheChild.

ProfessorBinchygivesthefullstory ofthestrugglebetweenMussoliniand theHolyFatheroverFascism'spretensionstoownthechild,bodyandsoul, fromtheinstantofitsbirth.Fascism, likeeveryotherformoftotalitarianism, claimsatightmonopolyofthetrainingofyouth.Thewholefutureisat stakeintheyoungsters.Theyarethe risinggeneration.Theyaretheworld ofto-morrow.Thetotalitariansseein themtheir"bidforperpetuity,their policyofinsuranceagainsttheeventualdeclineandfallwhichhashithertobeenthefateofallpoliticalsystems soonerorlater."

Itmayaswellbeadmittedatonce thatsomesinnersareeasiertolove thanothers.WehaveakindlierfeelingtowardsthePublicanthantoward thePharisee;largelybecausewefeel thatwehavemoreincommonwiththe Publican.Tohavesomethingin commonisanessentialbasisoflove. endinexhaustionandcompromise,in whichSpanishfreedomofactionand standingwouldbeconsequentlygreater.SenorSunerwasexceptionalin wanting,andsayinghewanted,aGermanvictoryagainsttheWest,Other importantSpaniards,lessoutspokenin public,hopeequallyforaGermandefeat.

NoSpaniardscanordodesireaGermandominationofEuropeforitsown sake.NocountryhasmorecompellingreasonsforwantingEuropetoconsistofanumberofsovereignunits,not overshadowedbyanyonePower.In SpainalltheGermanpropagandasuccess,suchasitis,comesfromtheidea thatGermanyis,perhaps,thelesser evil.ItiseasyfortheGermanssoto presentthemselveswhentheytalkto SpainaboutMarxism,onlyafewyears aftertheterribleeventsof1936and 1937.Itisverymuchharderforthem torecommendtheirNewEuropeby contrastwiththeolder,whollynonCommunistEuropewhichtheyhave neverthelessdestroyedwheneverthey could.Itshouldbeverydifficultfor themtosuggesttoSpaniardsthata worldinwhichthechiefPowerisGermanywouldbeabetterplaceforSpaniardsthanaworldinwhichBritain andAmericaaretheleadingPowers. Itisonlypossibleatallbecauseso manyEnglishmenplayintothehands oftheGermansbycontinuallypoohpoohingorignoringthesearingandterribleexperiencesofwhichsohigha proportionofSpanishfamilieshavepersonalexperience.

TherehasbeenintheEnglishpress widecurrencyforamisleadingnotion ofthemessagesentbyGeneralFranco inreplytoHitler'sgreetingonhis birthday.Hecarefullylimitedhis goodwishestotheGermancampaign inRussia,saying:

"Isendyoumywishesforatriumph ofGermanarmsinthegloriousenterpriseofliberatingEuropefromthe Bolshevikterror."
