*IndustrialDemocracy AdvocatedandWhat itMeans
Adraftplanofactionas"afirststeptowardstherealisationofa newsocialandindustrialorderbasedonChristianprinciples-hasbeen issuedinLondonbytheCatholicSwordoftheSpiritorganisation. Thestatementisissuedasaninterimreportwithaviewtoprovokingdiscussionleadingtoconstructivesuggestionsforconsideration beforethepublicationofafinalreport.
Pointsfromtheplanofactionare:
1.Ineachindustrythereshouldbe establishedacouncilrepresentingmanagement(includingownership),techniciansandworkers.
2.Themembersofthecouncilwill betheemployers'associationsandthe tradeunionsconcerned.
Inorderthattheseorganisations mayspeakforallengagedintheindustry,allemployersormanagersand allemployeesineachindustryareto becomemembersoftheirassociation ortradeunion.
Wherenosuchassociationortrade unionexists,itshouldbeformedfor thepurpose.
3.Bythismeansallengagedinthe industrywillberepresentedonan equalfootinginthegoverninbbody ofthatindustry....
4.AGeneralCounciloiIndustry shouldbeestablishedtoco-ordinate theactivitiesofthecouncilsinallmattersaffectingindustryasawhole.
5.ThegeneralcounciltoberepresentedintheLegislatureandtoplay aprominentpartinframinglegislationaffectingindustryinaccordance withtheprinciplesofsocialjusticeand :neliminatingunemployment.
Inordertoensurethepermanentrepresentationofthegeneralcouncil,pro-
visionshouldbemadeforitsinclusion inarevisedSecondChamber.
6.Ineachfactoryorbusinessa committeeshouldbeformed(ifnot alreadyestablishedrepresentingmanagers,techniciansandworkerstoadviseuponmattersofmutualinterest.
7.IndustrialDemocracymeansasysteminwhicheachindustryisrecognisedasbeingacorporatewhole,consistingofallthosewhoareengagedinit.
Workers,technicians,managersand shareholdersareallinthebusinesstogetherwithacommoninterestanda commonobject,toservethecommunitybyincreasingtheprosperityofall.
JustLivingWage.
Theobjectofthecouncilineach industrywill,therefore,betoestablishaworkingpartnershipofallconcernedintheindustry:
(a)Inframingthebroadpolicyof theindustrysoastokeepproduction inrelationtoconsumption;
(b)Inallmattersaffectingthecontinuityandconditionsofserviceand welfareoftheworkers,includingthe establishmentofajustfamilywage, andofafairstandardofwork,pensions, vocationaltraining,entryandrecruitmentoflabour,etc.
Itshouldberecognisedthatthefirst

Noindustrialreorganisationcansucceedwhichdoesnotcarrywithit therevivalandmaintenanceofasoundandprosperousagriculture.
chargeonindustryasawholeisajust livingwagedeterminedby:
(i.)Anagreedstandardofwork;
(ii.)Anagreedminimumaverage family;
(iii.)Theassumptionthatawife shouldnothavetoworktosupplementthewagestoalivingwage.
(c)Inregulatingpricesandquality ofgoods.
Itisconsistentwithdemocraticfreedomtorequirefromthoseengagedin anindustryaminimumstandardof craftsmanshipandtheproductionand saleofasoundarticleatafairprice.
8.Thecouncilofeachindustrywill alsoundertakeasoneofitsessential dutiestoprotecttheinterestofthe `smallman"equallywiththoseof largegroups.Smallbusinesseswillbe requiredtoorganisegroupswithoutlosingtheiridentity.

9.Acodeoffairpracticeshouldbe establishedbythejointindustrialcoun-
cilsandenforcedbyanimpartialtribunalestablishedbytheState,
10.industryandtheConsumer.
Theremustbeno"unholyalliance" ofworkersandindustrialistsagainst theinterestsoftheconsumer.
Theconsumerwillbeprotected againstmonopolybypricecontrolor othersafeguards,andtheStatewill watchconsumers'interestandintervenewherenecessary.
11.FactoryCentres.
Inindustrieswhereitispracticable. considerationshouldbegiventoplanningandestablishingfactorycentres. consistingofthemostmodernbuildingscompletewithheating,powersupply,air-conditioning,etc.
12.IndustryandAgriculture. Noindustrialreorganisationcan succeedwhichdoesnotcarrywithit therevivalandmaintenanceofasound andprosperousagriculture.

R.:Icanmerelysaythattotalk likethatistotalkarrantnonsense. Asamatteroffact,ProfessorAndersonshowsthathedoesnotunderstand eitherthereligionortheeducation whichheprofessestodeal.Lateron, hegivesamostinadequatedescription ofeducation,andacompletedistortion ofthenatureofreligion.Andaman withaninadequateknowledgeofthe onetopic,andanerroneousconceptof theother,isnotfittedtodealwith eitherofthem, Educationisnotjustlearningthings thatmayormaynotbeusefulinthis worldonly.Itisfittingpeopletofulfilthecompletepurposeofhumanexistence.Anditmustbeinaccordance withman'struenatureanddestiny:A manmustgetaliving,hemustlivein harmonywithhisfellowmen,andhe mustliveforGod.Andiftheschools aretogivetrueeducation,theymust provideforallthreeaspectsoflifeby teachingnaturalscience,byproviding charactertraining,andbyinculcating religion.Religionisessentialtoa soundeducation.

R.:Educationisconcernedwithdevelopment,butnotwiththelop-sided developmentProfessorAndersonadvocates.Mereknowledgeofthepurely naturalscienceswillnotproducegood men.Theevilsrampantintheworld aredue,nottolackofknowledge,but toafundamentaldisorderinthewill. Education,unlessitembracesmoral andreligioustraining,couldproduce nomorethanacleverscoundrel.
Moreover,-itisnottruethateducationisconcernedwithinquiryandinvestigation.Wearediscussingthe educationofchildreninourschools. Therechildrenaretaught,onthe authorityoftheirtext-booksand teachers,whatisalreadyknowntobe truefromtheinquiryandinvestigation
sorJohnAndersonhadbeenpresent! Forheseemsquiteunawarethatthe vastmajorityofthosewhosespiritof inquiryandscientificresearchprovided theworldwithwonderfuldiscoveries wereprofoundlyreligiousmen.In everybranchoflearningIcouldgive analmostunendinglistofmenwho combinedreligionandscience,and whowouldlookwithprofoundamusementuponProfessorJohnAnderson, didhemakethepuerileassertionin theirpresencethat"religionwasconcernedwiththelimitationofinquiry."

HUaninterestingnumberof thingshaveappearedinthepress recentlyrelativetoCommunism.FollowingthewarningoftheBritishLabourPartythattheRedswerereceiving ordersfromaforeignbodyandthat thelavishquantitiesofmoneythey werespendingcamefromanunknown source,Mr.T.II.Bathrevealedinthe morningpressthatoneofthehaltdozendeductionsfromworkers'payenvelopesinRussiaisa''HelpforForeignCommunistCampaignFund,"10 roubles.Sothatfromthestandpoint bothofdirectionandoffinance,Communismiscompletelyforeignandno amountofpretenceaboutbeingwhole heartecllybehindthewareffortcan effacethatconsideration.ApparentlytheAmericansaremuchmoreawake tothisaspectofthematterthanour ownpeople.Followingarecentan. nouncementbytheSovietGovernmentoftheexecutionoftwoPolish Labourleaders,anindignationmeeting inNewYorkbetweenleadersofthe AmericanFederationofLabourand theCongressofIndustrialOrganisation condemnedtheSoviet'sactionaspoliticalassassination,andthechargesas cynicalfabrications.ThegoodAmericansecretaryoftheU.S.Communist Party,EarlBrowder,repliedthatthe executionsarosefromaconspiracyby Americancitizenstooverthrowthe SovietGovernment,thatitwasfinancedbythePolishGovernment,andtoleratedbytheAmericanGovernment!
Anothermatterofnoteoccurredat therecentmeetingoftheLordMayors "SheepskinsforRussiaFund."The SecretaryoftheAustralianLabour Party(Mr.R.II.Nash)leftthemeeting,sayingthatheunderstoodthatthe meetinghadbeenconvenedandwasto havebeenlaunchedindependentlyof theRussianMedicalAidCommittee.If theappealwasassociatedwiththat committee,hedeclared,hecouldnotbe apartytoit.
Mr.Nash'sstandis,inmyopinion, tobecongratulated.Forinsober truththeRussianMedicalAidCommitteehasabadrecordinanother state.The"Bulletin"drewattention tosomeoftheirtransactions.Ona listofexpendituretotalling£2,132, therewasonlyoneitemsuggestiveof directassistancetoRussia,andthis wasforthesumof£93.Thebalance ofthemoneywentinsalaries,printing,propaganda,organisingwork,functions,andtravellingexpenses.Surely itistimetoputastoptoirresponsible organisationscollectingfundsostensiblyforthewareffort,butwhichlook like:"Oneforyouandtwoformyself,"asfarasCommunistsandthe US.S.R.areconcerned.
THEconcudingsectionofMr.Tindall'slettercommencesbyaskinghowwearetocreatethisbrave newworldwherepeopleare"notdementedwiththemaniaforowning things"theydidnotearn.Theansweristhat"we"willhavenotruck withMr.Tindall'sbravenewworld. Itsoundslikeaverystaleandservile worldtome.ButIwouldliketoremarkhowMr.Tindallhasmisreadour modernsociety.Itisindeedmadto havethingseasily,butithasnostomachfortheownershipofproductive property.Itsitchisonlyfortheuse ofthingsnotfortheirownership,for thatwouldinvolvetoomuchthought andresponsibility.Mr.TindallproposesEugenicsforthecreationofhis bravenewworld(organisedbythe genuinepriests!),Thatsuitsmeall right,fortheywilleachliquidateone anotherinanendeavourtosettlewho is"fit"forthefuture.
Mr.Tindallrevertstohis"pieinthe sky"chargeagainsttheChurch. I havealreadyrepliedtothislastweek. andwouldsimplypointoutherethat, evenwerehischargetrue,itmighthe afarmoresolidhopethanthe"skyin
thepie"promiseoftheanti-Christian reformers.It'sagreatdealsaferto haveyourheadinthecloudsthanto havecloudsinyourhead,anditcorrespondsagooddealclosertoreality. WhenPopeLeoXIII,fiftyyearsago, pointedoutthattheworkerswerein aconditionlittleremovedfromslavery,andthataremedymustbefound quickly,washereallytryingto"bamboozle"them?Wasthisan"obvious conspiracy"tokeepthemintheir chains?Itissubtletythatisfarbeyondme.
AfterthisMr.Tindallbecomesincoherent.Religion,hesays,isaman's character,whichishisfinancialstatus whichishypocrisy.Willsomeonetell mewhat'sgoingon?Mr.Tindalltalks aboutthepoortaxpayerinheritingthe earthwhentaxationisabolished.But Christ,WhomMr.Tindallwasquoting againstmesomeparagraphsbefore,

Besidestheregularweeklydances, meetings,debatesandbandperformanceshavebeenheldthere.Atpresentrehearsalsareinprogressfora musicalcomedy,whichwillshortlybe presentedinthehall.
OnEasterSunday,however,itwas usedasachurchforthefirsttime. Father_I,Cosgrove,M.S.C.,ArmyChaplain,attachedtotheheadquarters camp,arrangedageneralCommunion forallServicepersonnelinthearea.

Everyonewouldjoinwithyouin yourappealfonarevolutionofthe mind,sothatthepract'i..ofChristian principleswouldbecometherule.All agreeregardingthe3eve.thandicap whichisimposedotifarmersbyadebt systemwhichhasnorelationtothe vagariesofmarketprices.
Farmersareintelligentpeople,otherwisetheywouldnotbefarmers.They arelong-suffering,butthesuggestionof arevolutionofthemindforthemalone willnotappealasasolutionoftheir difficultiesofisolation,varyingprices, abnormalseasons,insectpests,weeds, anddiseasesofplantsandanimals.It isobvioustoanyoneknowingthecircumstancesthatanimprovementin conditionsisimperative.AlreadyCommunistorganisershaveappearedasif fromtheair,incentreswheretroubles wereacute,anditiscertainthatthese agentsarestillactive,particularlyin thelestestablisheddistricts.
TheCatholicappealforSocialJusticeisnowwellknownandappreciated:astrongcasehasbeenpresented forajustorfamilywage.whichshould beafirstchargeonindustry.butcuriously,thisappealisinterpretedas havingnorelationshiptoagriculture, sinceyoureditorialmakesanappealto drop"sillypride"inordertoallowa return"totheoldprovedpeasanttradition,"whichhasbeen"thebasisof securityandstabilityinEuropeflor onethousandyears."Thisistoo subtleformetounderstand.
Havingsomeacquaintancewithcountryareasandwithfarmers,itseems cleartome,thatthelastthingto whichmostfarmerswillsubmitis beingforcedintothepositionofpeasants,andthereislittledoubtthatit wastoavoidlivingapeasantexistence thatsomanysettlersleftpropertiesin theheavyrainfallareas,wheretheop. portunitiesaregreaterthaninother partsof'WesternAustralia.forthat subsistencefarming.whichhasbeen advocatedsofrequentlyinyourpaper.
Thesesettlers,however.werenot preparedtoadoptthepeasantlife: theyknewthatunskilledworkersin thecitywereabletosecurethebasic wageandenjoysuchcomfortsand amenitiesthatthecitycouldoffer. Theycouldhaveexistedinthecountryevenafterpayingabigloadofinterestbygrowingalittleofthis,and abitofthat,inthelittletimethey
couldspareironstheroutineandaccidentaljobsofthefarm.Butthey couldnotseeanymeansofgetting anysurpluscashwithwhichtogive theirfamiliesanythingwhichwould recompensethemfornothavingthe samestandardoflifeastheunskilled labourer.TheymightbepracticalCatholicsandgetsomesolacefromtheir religionfortheirlackofworldlyposition,butIbelieveitisnotthepurpose ofourreligiontodiscourageanyman fromendeavouringtogivehiswife somedomesticcomfort,andhischildrenanopportunityofaneducation onwhichtheycouldbuildandsosecure animprovedpositionforthemselvesas farmers,orinanyotheravocation.
Theworldhaschangedthroughthe centuries,anditcontinuestochange. Somecallthischangeprogress,others callitdifferently,buttheeirimletact remains,thechangecontinues.You haveappealedfora"returntoourorigins."Perhapsydtirintentionha'sescapedme,butIbelieveanappealto theweaversofLancashiretoreturnto thehandloom,ortothefoundersof Sheffieldtotheblacksmith'sshop wouldheasreasonable.
Noonewilldisptitethatagriculture andrurallifeneedimprovement,and thereforeitispleasingthatfourmen, outstandingintheirspheres,have beenappointedtomaketheenquiry. Therecanbenodoubtthatthesemen aresincereandanxioustogiveoftheir besttoAustralia.
Pressreportsshowthattheyhavea keenappreciationofthevalueofa happyhome.andthattheyareinvestigatingtheproblemswiththeir thoughtsbiassedtothebettermentof ruralfacilities,watersupplies,education,hospitalservices,electricitysupplies,etc.Thisisreassuring.The equipmentof,isefarmhouseisalso receivingattention,andtoanyone knowingwhathasbeenhappeningin thecountry,thissuggestsarealdesire tokeepcountrychildreninthecountryratherthanretainconditionswhich encouragethemtoseektheattractions ofthecity.Inthiswavitishoped thatareturntothelandwillbeen couragedbypreventingthedriftof youngpeoplefromcountryareas.
ItissuggestedthattheN.C.R.M. wouldobtaingooddividendsfromdevisingasystemofassistingfarmers withinformationshowinghowfarm homescouldbemadeconvenient,how simplewaterreticulationsystemscould beinstalled,andhowthehomecould bebeautified.
Thecomfortablefarmhomegoesa longwaytowardsmakingacontented farmwife,contentedfarmchildren,. andacontentedfarmer.

Ithasbeendinnedintousincessantlybypoliticiansandpropagandiststhattheonlythingthatmattersinthiscrisisisthewinningofthewar.Everything,wearetold,mustbesubjugatedto thewareffort;evensocialreform,theneedofwhichpractically everyonenowadmitsisimperative,couldaffordtobeshelved untilthecessationofhostilities.Therearose,however.vague rumoursandwhisperingsofa-NewOrder.-Therewasvague andpioustalkofapost-warreconstructionwhichapparentlywas toemergeautomaticallyafterthewar.Butinpointoffactthere hasnotbeentheslightestpracticalindicationofanypost-warplans. Rathertheverymentionofsuchthingshasdrawnrebukefrom highofficialquarters.asthoughthedesireofthepoorandtheproletariatforeconomicfreedom,securityanddignitywereinthe natureofreasonablesentiments.Yet,despitealltheassurancesof politicians.Australiahasfailedtoachieveunity.andthesinglemindednessdemandedofthepeopleinregardtothewarefforthas beenthwartedbecausethereisacompletelackofconfidenceas betweenthepeopleandtheirpoliticalleadersandbetweenthe workersandthecontrollersofcapital.Thesetwofundamental linesofdivisioncannothewipedoutbypromisesofarosyfuture. becausedistrustisallayednotbywordsbutbyactions,andbecauseitisthebitterexperienceofthepeopleinthepastthatpoliticalpromiseshavebeenalltoolikepie-crusts-madetohebroken.
itisnotpossiblerigidlytoseparatethetwincausesofdisunity. Theyexhibitthemselvesbothinthepoliticalandsocialspheres, andthereismuchoverlappingandinter-reaction.Thepolitical positionappearstoarisefromthedemandsoftheGovernmentto havefullcontrolovertherights,resourcesandlabourofthepeople. Insuchacrisisthisdemandshouldbereadilyaccededto,butin pointoffactitisbeingresistedbythetvorkingclassmovement, andtheirreluctanceisatleastunderstandable.firstly,becauseof whathappenedafterthelastwar,whentheirheroescameback, manyofthemtounemployment.want,andsocialinsecurity,and, secondly,becausetheyseethatallthetalkaboutequalityofsacrificeismeaningless,forthewarprofiteerstillgoesundetected,or atleastunpunishedasanenemyoftheState,andthecompanyprofitsareashighasever.Again,theworkerintear-timeaccepts lowerpayandsurrenderscertainhardly-wonindustrialrightson thedistinctunderstandingthatthisisatemporarymeasureinducedbypatriotisminanemergency.onlytofindthatwar-time legislationisoftenverydifficulttoremovefromtheStatuteRook. andthathehadmadenotaconcessionbutasurrenderofhisproperrights.
Thefactthatthereexistsgravepoliticaldisunityandindustrial unrestillustratesthattheproperimplementationofthewareffort andtheinstitutionofsocialjusticearevitallyrelated.Whilethere isdistrustabroaditisuselessfortheGovernmenttoasktheworkerforablankcheque.ItisfortheGovernmenttomakethefirst gesture,andapacticalgestureatthat.Ifthemassoftheworkers weregiveneconomicsecuritythroughtheownershipofproperty therecouldbenodoubtoftheirwholeheartedco-operation,for theywouldhavesomethingoftheirveryowntodefend.TheGovernment,moreover,asanearnestofitssincerity,shouldberesoluteenoughtotakeoverfullfinancialcontrolintheinterestsofthe people,punishtheprofiteer.andmakesurethatthewealthywere unitedwiththeworkerinthematterofnationalsacrifice.Itis ludicroustolookfortrustandconfidenceinthesocietywhichpays itssoldiers6s.perdayandsmuglypermitsatenpercentrake-off totheracketeer.Politicianstalkverygliblyabout"politicalstabality,"withoutapparentlyeverrealisingthatthiscanexistonly insofarasthemassesoftheworkersenjoyeconomicsecurity. Thissecuritycanheachievedeitherbythesiezureofallrights fromtheworkerandtheconscriptingofhislabour,orelse,by grantingtohimallthatisstrictlyhisinnaturaljustice,thatissome shareintheownershipormanagementorprofitsofindustry.The timetomakethisholdstrokeisnow,foronthewinningofthe workers'confidencedependsthesuccessofthewareffort.

"Youwillhavereadinasectionof ourpressthataprofessorintheUniversityofSydneyrecentlymadea veryviciousattackuponreligion,and demandedthatitbecompletelybanishedfromtheeducationofourAustralianchildren.AddressingameetingoftheNewEducationFellowship inSydneyonApril1,ProfessorJohn Anderson,whoholdsthechairofPhilosophy,tooktheopportunitytogive publicitytoradicalanti-religiousviews whichhehasformanyyearschampionedwithinthehallsoftheUniversity.Heclaimedthattoindoctrinate childrenwithreligiousideasunfitted themforlife.Religiousteachingmade childrenconsciousofGodasapolicemanwhomtheycanneverdodge,and ledtoaconfusedstateofmindwhen theywereconfrontedwiththedifficultiesofmodernlife.Inhisview,religionandeducationhavenomorein commonthansnakesinIceland,and teacherswouldbewelladvisedtokeep theclergyoutoftheirschools.
"ProfessorAndersoninthisoutburst isbutthespokesmanofagroupof 'New'educationists,whoaretryingto
buildupasystemof'Character-education'entirelydivorcedfromthemoral teachingsoftheChristianreligion. TheirprophetisFreud,andtheirtheoryofhumancharacterisadegrading one,becauseitisbaseduponadistortionofman'snature.UndertheinfluenceofFreud,thepresenttrendof experimentalpsychologyistodisregard theinvestigationofthehighermental powersbywhichthechildcomesinto contactwiththeexteriorworld,andto centreinvestigationuponemotions, temperamentand'character.'Expression,'orthewayinwhichachild externateshisinteriorstates,isthe chiefpreoccupationofthe'New'edu. cationists.Sincetheyscornfullyrejectanyeternalvaluesofrightand wrong,somebasisformoralitymustbe inventedasasubstituteforthetra' ditionalcodeofmoralitybequeathed tousbyJesusChrist.Thecommonlyacceptedviewisthatthemorality ofactionsisapurelyrelativething. Moralityissimply'SocialEfficiency,' andathingismoralifitworks,thatis, ifitconducestosocialbetterment.So, whatwassintothelastgeneration maybecomeavirtueforthepresent generation.Theidealstobecherishedbytheeducatorsofthe'New'enlightenmentaregoodcitizenship,socialservice,andsoon.Thetaskof theeducatorisprincipallytocreatean environmentthatwillinspireyouthto goodsocialresponses.
"Itmaybequitepossibleinthese daysofregimentationtoproducea generationthatwouldreacttoparticularsituationsaccordingtoplan,likea troupeofwell-trainedcircusanimals. Butweshallneverconsenttoatheory whichconsidersthemainspringofhumanmoralitytobechieflyathingof instinctsandconditionedreflexes,The Catholiceducatormaintainsthatthere aretwoelementsinmoraltrainingthat areessentialtoitsverynature.The childmustbegivenacorrectconceptionofthemoralideal,andwhenhe isconvincedofitsworth,hiswillmust bestrengthenedinthestruggletoattainit.Butthe'New'educatorsobjectthatthisistoimposedogmatic teachingontheunformedmindofthe child,andallsuch'indoctrination'is mosthatefultothemoderns.Revolt againstthereligiousindoctrinationof childrencomesverybadlyfromProfessorAnderson,whohassofrequently expressedhisadmirationforSoviet Russia'sattempttofreethehuman spiritfromtheshacklesoftheexisting order.Inthehistoryofeducation therehasneverbeenamorethorough attemptatindoctrinatingawholepeoplewithatheisticmaterialismthan thatwhichwasimposeduponthe Russianpeople.Atanyrate,ifthe 'New'educationistsimaginethatthey canperfectasystemofeducation withoutindoctrinatingpupilsthey mustbeverynaive.Howcanthey teachmathematicswithoutimposing uponthechildrenthedogmasofthe multiplicationtable,orexpectthem toacquireliteraryskillwithoutaccept. ingthegeneralrulesofgrammar?

Therewasnochatting,nowhispering, nosignofirreverenceorimpatience, thepeoplecametospeaktoMarythat shemighttellherSonthattheirlove anddevotionwereHisto-dayand throughoutalltheto-morrowsoftheir lives,comewhatmay.Theycame alsotopleadwiththeirMotherMary thatherprotectingarmsshouldguard theirsonsanddaughtersinuniform, onactiveserviceabroadandonthe homefront;theyappealedtoher underthegreatestoftitles,asMother ofGodandMotherofmen,tosave
thislandfromthehorrorsandsufferingsofinvasion;and,finally,they cametoputthemselves,theirhomes, theirchildren,theirparisheswithits priests,Sistersandschoolsunderher specialprotection.Withallthese needsatheart,itwasabusyhourand ahalfforallwhomarchedinourMay Procession.AndMarywaspleased, fortheskywasherownblue,andthe sunwasdancingwithjoyasHeaven lookeddownuponMary'schildren marchinginprayerbeforeherSon. AndMaryschildrencameinsuch numbersthattheyoverflowedour church,fillingorgangallery,side chapelsandporch.Itwasthemost devotionalandimpressiveMayProcessionwehaveyetheldinSouth Perth.
TheOccasionalSermon.
Inhisoccasionalsermon,Father Breslinrecalledthedramaticscenethat followedthefallofourfirstparents whenGodpromisedthemandthrough themtheunbornraceofmankind,the Maidwhoseprivilegeitwouldbeto beartheRedeemerofhumanity.
Lateron,intheOldTestament,we readofGod'sinstructionsastohow theTabernacleshouldbebuiltofpreciousmaterials,wereadofthemighty TempleinJerusalem.Yetwhatwere theycomparedwiththetabernacle, thewombinwhichHewasyettotake upHisabode?HowlavishlymustHe havepreparedthemaidwhowastobe Hislivingtempleandabode!And howrichlyHedidinfactendowher. Nogreaterdignitycouldbeconferredupon Mother ofGod.NotevenGodHimselfcould increaseherdignity."Thosesimple words,"MotherofGod."speakvolumes.Theycontaineverything:they explaineverything.TheHolyGospelstellsuslittleofherlife.They speakofherrarely,andthenonly briefly:wearetemptedtothinkthat itisanomission.Andstill,inspite oftheirextremeconciseness,theEvangelistshavesaideverythingofMary; theyhavesaidallthatourpietyand lovecoulddesirewhentheywrote: "Mary,ofwhomwasbornJesuswhois calledChrist;MarytheMotherof Jesus;TheChildwithMaryHis Mother."Afterthatwordswouldbe superfluous.Asafamouspreacher oncesaid:"TheCatholicChurchwith allherhomage,allhertemples,allher altars,allherstatues,allherincense, allherpraise,allherfeasts,allher flowers,allherpraise,allherconfidence,venerationandlove,didnot placetheBlessedVirginsoexaltedly asdidtheGospelsinthosebriefbut eloquentwords,"Mary,ofwhomwas bornJesusWhoiscalledChrist." Everyhonouriscontainedforherin that.WecannowreadilyunderstandthecustomthattheOriental Christianshave.Theyencircleher browwithabandonwhichisinscribedonewordinlettersofgold-Theo. tokos-MotherofGod.Theyunderstandfullwellthatonewordforms forherthemostsparklingofdiadems: itisheruniqueandsufficientadornment;Shehasneedofnoother,for thatembracesanddemandsallothers. ByitshebecametheDaughterofGod theFather,theMotherofGodtheSon, theSpouseoftheHolyGhost. ThepreacherwentontospeakofdevotiontoMaryamongtheSaintsofall ages,andhowtheytaughtthatdevotiontoherwasamarkofpredestination.Theunionthattookplaceat theIncarnationneverceased.Onthat dayMotherandSonbecameunited, neveragaintobecomeseparated.He cametousthroughher;wemustgo throughhertoHim.Wecannothave partwithHimifweexcludeHisholy Mother.Therearemanyso-called Christiansto-daywhofoolishlythink theycanhavetheSonandrejectthe Mother.But,liketheJewsinBethle-

Butwhatisit,apartfromyourown unselfishness,thathasmadeitpossibleforyoutogivethemaCatholic education?Justthis:thatmanyof yourfellowCatholicshavecomeforwardandembracedalifeofnoble self-sacrificeinorderthattheremight beCatholicschoolsforyourchildrento goto.Theyhavegonethroughan arduouscourseoftraining,andnow
cftheboarders,inoneorotherutthe boardingschoolsinwhichtheyhave worked,theteachersinCatholic schoolshaveampleopportunityof judgingtheamountofhomeworkthat isproportionedtoaclass'sageand maturity.Thefactthattheamount setisnotnormallyexcessiveisapparentfromthefactthatlatehoursare notkeptinboarding-schools.Everyoneknowsthetaskofgettingchildren todotheirhomeworkistrying,and manyachildoweshissuccessat schooltothegentlefirmnessofhis parentswhoinsistedonthework's beingdone.If,then,youhavebeen doingyourpart,youmayreasonably approachtheschoolauthoritieswitha viewtosecuringlightertasksforthe childreninclassesmoresuitedtotheir degreeofmaturity;butdon'tcommit thefollyoflecturingexperiencedteachersontheamountofhomeworkthey shouldsetfortheirclasses.Indeed, Ishouldliketoaddawordonbehalf ofallteacherswhethertheybein Catholicschools,Stateschools,orany otherschools:theteacherhasthesuccessofthepupilatheart,andparents shouldnotbequicktoquarrelwithhis arrangements.

3.IntheneighbourhoodofVilladel Nevosa(Bistrica),nearFiume,three carabinieriofficerswerekilled.Insteadofsearchingforthecriminals, theItalianArmycametothisplace, ontheFeastofCorpusChristi,June4, 1942,andproceededtolaywaste7 villages,tokill76people,andtodeport therest-allthistoavengeacrime committedbyunknownpersons.
