NativeCatholicsintheSolomonIslandsdiedratherthanbetraytothe JapanesethewhereaboutsofBishopAubinandthepriestsandnunshidingwithhiminthejunglesofGuadalcanal.
Thiswasdisclosedatthehalf-yearlymeetingoftheMaristMedicalMissionSociety,byoneofthemissionariesoftheSocietyofMarywhowas evacuatedfromtheSolomons.
TheMaristFathertoldhowthreeattemptstoChristianisetheSolomonshadbeenthwarted.To-day,hesaid,7,000Catholicsinapopulationof14,000werewithoutapriestortheconsolationoftheSacraments.
ItwillberecalledthatwhentheJapanesefirstthreatenedtheNorthSolomons,BishopWaderefusedtoleave hisstationandsaidhewouldmeetthe nvadersontheshore,andappealto -.hemtoallowhimtocontinuehismissionwork.

Thepresidentofthesociety,Dr.C. J.Fallon,K.S.S.,saidthat,becauseof thewar,theactivitiesoftheMedical Missionhadbeenlimited,butmembers ofthesocietyinSydneyhadcontinued theirwork,andasubstantialcredithad beenbuiltup.
Thismoneywouldberequiredfor therestorationofthemissionafter thewar.
Moredonationswerestillrequired, hesaid,becauseitwashopedtopurchaseasmallvesseltofacilitatethe workamongtheislands.

Thestoryofthethreeattemptsto bringtheGospeltotheSolomonswas toldbyaMaristFather,whoalsogave afirst-handaccountoftheexperiences
CatholicmissionariesonGuadalcanalduringtherecentfighting.
Spanishmissionarieswerethefirstto celebrateMassontheislandin1568,he said.
TheyplantedtheCrosscloseto ',heretheAmericanairbaseisto-day, buttheydidnotstayforlongandprobablydidnotmakemanyconverts.
SeveralnativesweretakentoSpain withthemtobetrainedascatechists, buttheEuropeanclimateprovedtoo severe,andtheydied.
Thesecondattemptwasmadein1845, butsavagetribesmenandtheunhealthyclimatetookaheavytollofthe bravemissionaries.
Onlytwooftheoriginalbandsurvived.
InMarch,1898,continuedthespeaker, theMaristFatherswereagainasked togototheSolomons.
Theygladlyacceptedthemission, butthedifficultiesweretremendous.
Inthefirst30years,theaveragelife ofamissionaryintheislandswas about10to12years.
Buttheworkhadprogressed,and awonderfulfutureseemedaheaduntil thewarspreadtotheislands.

Itmightseemtosomepeoplethat thethirdattempthadnowfailed,said themissionary,buthedidnothold thatview.
Allthemissionstationshadbeende stroyed,butshellsandbombscould notdestroytheFaith.onceithad takenroot.
Describingtheexperiencesofthe missionariesonGuadalcanal.thespeakersaidthatforfourweekstheyhad livedinthebushwiththeirBishop.

ItwasChristmasEve,1941,when FatherWalshandabout30othermissionariesweretakenintocustody aroundHongKong.Inthegroup wasBishopCuthbertO'Gara,Vicar ApostolicofYuanling.China.
Thepriestswereboundwithropes, theirhandstiedtightlybehindtheir backs,andweremarchedintothefront firinglinesasthesiegeofHongKong drewtowarditsbloodyend.TheTap-
aneseapparentlyhopedthemissionaries wouldbehitbystraybulletsandthus easilydisposedof.
Fiveofthemissionaries,including BishopO'Gara,wereimprisonedinan oldgarage.Thecementflooronwhich theysleptwascoldandslimy.There werenosanitaryinstallations.For threedaysandfournightstheprisoners hadnofoodorwaterexceptinsmall amountsthatweremoreatorturethan asatisfaction.Allbecamesick-four haddysentery;onedevelopedpneumonia.Inexchangeforagoldwatch theprietsgotacupofwater.Outside theimprovisedprison,thenightsky blazedwithaweirdlight-theJapanesewerecrematingtheirdeadsoldiers. R.:Therealdifficultyfortheman whocanspeaklikethatisnotthatthe Creedwaswrittencenturiesago,but thatheeitherhasneverhad,orhas subsequentlylost,thefaithwhichhas beenthatofChristiansthroughthe ages.TheCreedcan'tbetrueinone age,andthenbymerelapseoftimebecomeuntrueinalaterage.Modernistswouldliketosaythat,whatever theCreedmeanttopeopleofearlier certuries,itcannothavethesame meaningforus.Butthatissheernonsense,Theywouldnotdaretospeak likethatofanyotherwritings.What Aristotlewrote,centuriesbeforeChrist, madesensethen,andmakesthesame sensenow.ThemeaningofAristotle hasn'tchanged.andbecomemeaninglessforus.ButModernistswanttoretaintheChristianname,whilstrejectingtheChristianfaith;sotheyfall hackonadistinctionbetweentruth andtheformulaexpressingit,saying thattheymerelyrejecttheformula.

R.:Millions,whostillretainthe Christianfaithinthegenuinesenseof theword,believethatGod,inHisomnipotence,willraiseupthebodiesof thedeadattheendoftheworld,reunitingthemwiththesoulswhichform-

Oneofthemainpointshemakesthere isthis:thataworldtotallywithout prayerwouldbeaworld''totallyblind andinsane."Hisactualphraseisa "totallyumnysticalworld:"butIam goingtokeeptothesimplerandless misunderstoodword"prayer,-because peoplesometimesthinkthatmysticism meanseitheratendencytoswoonaway atoddmoments,orelseasortofpermanentwoolly-headedness.Iamgoingtousethewordprayer,butIdon't 'meanjust"askingforthings,"and,a, Iamgoingtodefineit,itwillagree withwhatHuxleyhasinmind.A worldtotallywithoutprayerwouldbe aworldtotallyblindandinsane.
"Wherethereisnovisionthepeople perish;"andHuxley'sjudgmentofour ownworldisthatwearedangerouslyfaradvancedintothedarkness.
Now,thefirstthingtonoticeabout thisisthatitisnotanuncommon view.Itisnutonlyfluxlev'sview; itistheChristianview.Itisalso theviewofallthegreatreligiousteachersoftheworld;andmorethanthat, learnedmenofallkindsaretellingus thatthissocietyofours,themodern Westernworld,istheonlycivilisation inthewholeoftheworld'shistory whichhasnotheldthatviewandbased itslifeuponit.Ifweimagineourselvesashavingtogiveanaccountofour societytotherestofhumanity,we mightimagineourjudgessayingtous, "Yes,you'vedonemightythingsand goodthings;butyou'veforgottenthe 'onethingnecessary;'you'veforgotten thatbeingismoreimportantthan doing.What'stheuseofbeingable totravelatbreathlessspeedifyou don'tknowwhereyouwanttogoto,or why?What'sthegoodofconquering theairifyoucan'torganiseyourconquestforthegoodofhumanityrather thanitsharm?Sciencecanonlytell youhowtodothings;itcan'ttellyou whatyououghttodo,stilllesswhat yououghttobe.You'vegained enormouslyinknowledge,andtherefore inpower;butyou'velostyourvision; and'wherethereisnovisionthepeople perish.'"
Now,whatisthisvision'And what,inanycase,hasitgottodowith prayer,Weallknowthedifference betweenknowingthingsandonlyknowingaboutthem.Wemaylearnalot aboutsomeverylovelyandlovableperson;butthatdoesnotenableustosay weknowhim:onthecontrary,wesay wewanttoknowhim.Andifwedo gettoknowhimintimately,andlove him,thenweacquireanewkindof knowledge,theknowledgethatbegets loveandisinturnbegottenbylove. Thisisthedeepestandmostexciting kindofknowledge,becauseitenlarges notourmindsonly,butourwholepersonality.Andwhatistrueofpersons istruealsoofthings-nature,animals, flowers,trees.Thisdirectlovingknowledgeisanexampleofwhatwemean, ingeneral,byvision.
WhenWeHaveFoundGod.
Aswegrowup,mostofuslosethis powerofseeingthings.Atschoolour mindsareclutteredupwithalotof
factsaboutthings;andthenwehave tostruggleforaliving,usingthings, andevenpersons,simplyasmeansfor thedoingofourjob.Andifweget intothewayofusingthingssimplyas means,weneverstoptolookatthem, andsoweneverreallyseethem.But
thepeopleperish.Thelongerweremaincontentwithourlossofvision anddonothingaboutit,thefurtherwe advanceintothedarkness,thefurther weadvancetowardstotalblindnessand insanity.
seebeautyandloveitandfeelcompelledtoserveit.Themanofprayer seesperfection,ifonlyasinaglass darkly;andnothingwillpreventhim fromservingthat,totheendofhis daysandthelastdropofhisblood.
poets,artists,saints,allindifferent waysdokeeptheirpowerofseeing thingsastheyreallyare;andsotheyarealwaysfallinginlovewiththings, andlifeforthemisaconstantdelight. Childrenhaveit,too,andwehaveto learnfromthem:"Unlessyoubecome aslittlechildren,youshallnotenter intothekingdomofheaven."Fewof usevermanagetobechildlike;weonly succeedinbeingchildish.
Now,thereisonethingyoucan noticeespeciallyaboutlittlechildren, asaboutsaints:allthethingsthat cometheirwaytheytreatasequally real,equallypartofthegreatfamily ofcreation.Youfindthemhaving longtalkswithpuppies,flowers,dolls, humanbeings,allwiththesamegravity.Theyaremuchwiserthanwe. Eventhoughwelooklongandlovingly atthings,weshallloseourpowerof visionandperishunlessweseethem all,together.asafamilyinGodand Godinthem.Onlywhenwehave foundGod,saythemenofprayer,will ourhumanityhefulfilled;andonly thenwilloureyesbefullyopenedto thethingsofthisworld;onlythen shallwelovethemfully,andwithout fearofturningtheirgoldintothedross ofself-loveandself-glory;onlythen lovinghumanitytruly,shallwebeable toattemptthebuildingofaworld fitforhumanity.Iamnotsaving, ofcourse-andIwouldstressthisvery strongly,incaseeverythingIamsayingshouldbemisunderstood-thatwe seekGodinordertobuildagoodand happyworldthatwouldhetheexact oppositeofwhatweareherefor.I amonlysavingthatwecannot,asa matteroffact,expecttobuildagood worldunlesswedointhefirstplace seekGod.Politicalchangescannot helpus,Huxleyinsists,unlessmany peoplesetouttochangethemselves bythe"onlyknownmethodwhich reallyworks,"themethodofthemen ofprayer.Aslongasthereisnovision,
WithoutPrayerWeFail. Wesometimesthinkofprayerasa wayofguardingagainstthepossible angerofGod,asortofreligiousfire insurance.Ifthatisourwholeidea ofprayer,itisacrudeone.Orwe thinkofprayersimplyasawayofgettingthingswewant,andthatisnot verynobleeither;itisliketryingto marryGodforHismoney.Wemust indeedstandinaweofGod,andinfear ofsin;weshouldbeverysillyifwe didnot.Thefrighteningvastnessof theuniverseisHisfootstool.andHis loveisaburningfire.Wehaveto askforwhatweneed,forwedenyour natureifwerefusetoadmitthatweare Hiscreatures,dependentonHimas childrenaredependentontheirparents.Butprayeris,aboveall,notso muchanactionasastateofbeing; fromourpointofviewweshouldask first,notwhatitdoesforus,butwhat itdoestous.Thewisemenofthe worldtellusnotsomuchthatwithout prayerweshallfailtogetwhatwe want,orgetwhatwedon'twant,but thatwithoutprayerweshallfailtobe whatwewanttobe:realmen.We shallbeblindandinsane.Weshall beonlyhalf,orlessthanhalf,alive. Somepeoplethinkthatiftheycan swoonwithdelightatthesightofa buttercuptheyaresomehowintune withtheInfinite;theymaybe,but theyarenottherebymenofprayer. Somepeoplethinkthatifthesinging ofahymnortherecitalofaprayer tillsthemwithwarm,cosyfeeling,theyaremenofprayer;theyaremistaken. Somepeoplethinkthatprayer,atleast aswefinditinthesaints,issomething spooky,aquestionofoddandmorbid experiences;butitisn't.Somepeople thinkthatbeingamanofprayermeans beingadreamer-thesortofmanwho alwaysleaveshisumbrellainthetrain orforgetstotakeoffhisbootswhenhe goestobed;they,too,aremistaken. Menofprayerarehard-bittenrealists. Theysay,ineffect,this:Godiswhat ismostrealandtrueandgoodand lovely;somuchsothateverythingelse ifviewedapartfromHimseemsunimportantandshallow.Weknow whatwehavetodothatHemayshow Himselftous;andwearegoingto doit;andnothingunderthesunis goingtostopus.
ComfortMakesUsCowards.
Theartistandthelover(andmost ofusareoneortheother,ifnotboth)
Tofitourselvesforanystrenuous wayoflife,therearetwothingswe havetodo.Wemustconcentrate uponit,schoolingourselvestosacrifice interestswhichwouldclashwithit, andformingourcharacterssoastobe abletomeetthedemandsitwillput punus.Secondly,wemusttrainour minds,soastobemastersoftheart wewanttopractice.Weshallneed tobehumbleenoughtolearn,concentratedenoughtobeabletostudy, single-mindedenoughnottobea:waysdistracted.Themorestrenuous orheroicthelife,themoreintensive ourtraininginthesetwowayswill havetobe.Thelifeofprayeristhe moststrenuousofall;andthetraining foritthemostintensive.Itisnot apleasanthobbynorachildishpastime.Allthemastersassureusof that.Itissomethingwealloughtto do.allcando,allmustdoifwewant tobereallyalive;butwhileallare called,fewarechosen;andfeware chosenbecausefewofuswanttobe chosen Comfortmakescowardsof usall.

Thevoyageundertakenbythemen ofprayerisarduousandexacting;but theChristianfeelsstone,notinhisown powerandresources,butinthe strengthofChrist.ThatisthemeaningofChristianlife.Theaimofthe Christianmenofprayerisnot,and neverhasbeen,tosubstitutethehumanityofChristfortheGodheadas theobjectofworship.Christsaidof Himself,"IamtheWay;"theChurch initsliturgypraysthroughChristto God;theChristianjourneyissummed upintheoldphrase,"throughthehumanitytothedivinity."Wearetold firsttoputonChrist;andthen,living inHimandinHispower,weshallfind thefulfilmentofourlivesinachieving unionwiththeGodhead,livingwith ChristinGod.Thatisthepathwhich alltheChristiansaintshavefollowed, anditisthatwhichhasgiventhem theirsimplehumilityinspiteoftheir glory;giventhemtheirhomeliness, theirloveandcareforthesmallthings oftheworld,theirpracticalgoodsense, theirimmenseenergyinservinghumanity.Itisthat,too,thatgives themtheircourage.Fortheysay,as St.Paulsaid,"Icandoallthingsin Himwhostrengthenethme."

Yetmoreinterestinglythewhole questionofCommunistfinanceshas beenventilated.Thevolumeofliteratureproducedandthe"immense staffofemployees"isrevealedasbeing "farbeyondthefinancialcapacityof theLabourParty,whosemembership isatleast40foldthemembership claimedbytheCommunistParty:' Thismakesveryinterestingreading whenonerecallshowtheComradesare alwayslumpingtheChurchinwiththe "vestedinterests."Buttheprocess 'ofpolitenegotiationhasnowturned toopenattack.Followinguponthe chargethattheRedsdonotpublish balancesheetsandhencecastjustifiabledoubtsupontheirclaimtofinancialindependence,anarticlepublished intheLabourPressServicequeries whatisthesourceofthe"tremendous sumsbeingspentonCommunistactivityinBritain."

Thustheywillleavetheuglinessof thetown,notforthebeautyofthe land,butforthebeautyofGod'sface; theywillflyfromthediseaseofthe town,notforthehealthofthebody, butforthehealthofthesoul;they willcutthetangledcomplexityof townlife,notforthesimplelifewith nature,butforthequietlifewithGod.

Oneofthemostexplicitmotivesofthosewhoareturning theirfacestowardsthe land isthedesiretorestoretheCatholicFamily.Mostoftheoldermen andwomenwhocanthemselvesrememberparentsandgrandparents, knowthatthemodernarrangementof theworldhasputanendtothehistoricinstitutioncalledHOME.Many oftheyoungermenandwomen,too, realiseasifbyintuitionthatastate ofthingsthatmakesrace-suicideseem tobetheonlypracticalpolicyisonly astateofchaos,if,indeed,itcanbe calledastate.
Thesplendidvisionofweddedlove, grantedbyGodtotheheartofyouth, seemsbutdivinemockerywhenmet bytownconditions,whichmakethe begettingofafamilyseemacrime againsttheState.
Itistothecreditofoursoberdays thatamongstthemostsoberfugitives fromthatproximateoccasionofsin called"themoderntown"aretobe foundyoungmenandwomenwhose heartisstirringwiththeself-sacrificial desiresofwedlockandparenthood.

Sothatcharityalone,andnotjustice,canobligeanyonetomakea gratuitousloan.Someareperplexedoverthesedifferentattitudes onthepartoftheChurch.atonetimecondemning,andatanother authorising,thepracticeoftakinginterestonloans.Asatisfactoryexplanationistobefoundinthedifferenceofeconomiccircumstancesandthestateofsociety.Moneywasformerlyemployed merelyasatokentofacilitatetheexchangeofgoods.Opportuni- tiesforinvestingmoneyincommercialventuresorconvertingit intorevenue-producingpropertywerecomparativelyrare.Hence aloantoasolventpersoninthosedayswasanadvantagerather thanaburden,foritgavethemoney-lenderfullsecurityc.rhis money,astheborrowerinsuredhimagainstitsaccidentalloss. AfterbowingslightlyandgeneflectingtotheBlessedSacrament,seats wereresumed.Whenallhadreturnedtotheirplaces,theLegionaryPromisewassaidaloudbyFatherCarolanonbehalfofallpresent.The Catenawasthenrecited,allpresent standing.Thiswasfollowedby BenedictionoftheMostBlessedSacrament,afterwhichtheconcluding prayersoftheLegionwererecitedand thefinalhymnsung.

Setagainstthisenrichingpovertyof land-workandhand-work,themachineworkofthetownisseentobeessentiallywastefuloftimeandmaterial. When,then,theCatholicsplantoleave thetownitisnotmerelythrougha desiretoworshipGodandkeepthe hardcommand:-"Thoushaltnot commitadultery,"butinadesireto fulfil,"Thoushaltnotsteal."
SixthMotive:LoveofLiberty.
Afurthermotiveofurgencywith themembersoftheMovementmay becalledtheirLoveofLiberty.To someofthemthismotiveexpressesitselfasaprinciple:-"TheHomeisthe SocialDefenceofLibertyandthe HomesteadistheEconomicDefence oftheHome."
Yetthislibertyisnotaman'sphysicalandmoralpowertodowhathe would,buttodowhatheought.The half-truth,andthereforeheresy,of "self-expression"takesnolastingroot ontheland
Butonlyontheland,withitseasy directaccesstotheforcesofnature, istherethenormalpossibilityofthat unselfishself-reproductionwhichis nature'scounterstroketo"self-expression."

SeventhMotive:Loveofthe Fatherland
Lastly,themenandwomenwhoare preparingtoquitthetownsforthe landoftheirnativecountryare promptedbytheloveoftheircountry. Theyrecognisethatnotownfeedsor clothesitself,butmustnecessarilybe fedandclothedbythedwellersonthe land.Moreover,theygoontorecognisethatthemorepeopledwellin thetownthemorepeoplemustdwell onandtilltheland.Hence,aState soorganisedthattown-dwellersincreaseandland-dwellersdecreaseis aStatebleedingtodeath.
Itissometimesurgedthatlandworkishard,Thereplymustalways be:"Hardoreasy,land-workisnecessary."Ifthen,theNationneedsfor itslifetheseemingsacrificeoflandwork,theworkmustbeorganised. eithervoluntarilyorcompulsorily:becauseanation,likeanindividual,cannottakeitsownlife.Ifvoluntary effortfailstheNationwillbecompelledtoapplycompulsion.Suchcompulsionwouldbeadisgracetoany people.
ButthemembersoftheRuralMovementaredeterminedtopreventthis disgracebymakingvoluntaryeffort notafailure,butasuccess.Filled withahopeandlovethatspringfrom theirhighvisionoffaiththeyare mindedtogoforthfromEgypt'sservileconditionstothelibertyofthe sonsanddaughtersofGod,wherethey mayworshipHimwithhandand heart.Theywillnotbeforgetfulthat whenGodbidsthemworshipHimby thecommandment,"Honourthy fatherandthymother,"Hehasbid themtogivehonour,reverence,obedience,and,attimes,self-sacrificetothe landthatborethemandthebreasts ofearththatgavethemsuck.

Itistheconstantcravingforthe truthofthingsthatexplainsman'sinterestinreligion.Everygeneration issearchingforthatsameanswer: Whatisthepurposeinlife?Where didIcomefrom?Whatdoesitall intan-history,thedailystrugglefor bread,theloveofmanforwoman, war,revolution,andthefactthatChrist trodthisearth,claimedtobeGod, andhavinggivenmentheanswerto theireternalquestioning,wascrucified intheM-iddleEastanddiedpinnedup onacrossandcoveredwiththespittle oftheRomanconscriptswhonailed himthere,andinHisownwords, knewnotwhattheydid.Yes,what doesitallmean?Whathappensto amanafterdeath?Isthereareckoningforthewaywehavelivedourlife.
andifsowhatkindofareckoningis it?
Thereisawelterofideologiesinthe worldto-day,atwentiethcenturydelugeof-isms-withNazism,Fascism, Communism,Shintoism,andtherest. Thereareamyriadreligioussects, paganandChristian,fromBuddhists toHolyRollers,andallthese-ismsand sectsclaimtoanswerallormostof thequestionsthatamancan'thelp askinghimselfsometimeorother.And besideallthese,yetapartfromthem, istheCatholicChurch-sogreatan enigmatomany-withthatperfect. synthesisofdoctrineswhichaloneembodiesthetruthofthings,whichalone cangiveaninfallibleanswertothat hungrycravingthatisrackingmankindto-day.Thebeautyandthe logicandthefulnessoftheCatholic answer,beingasit is thetruthof thingsandrevealedasitwasbyGod Himselfwhenonearthsomeyears agoasman,dwarfsintoinsignificance thepitifulattemptsofthemindofa KarlMarxoraDr.Rosenbergtounravelthemysteriesofhumanlifeand thestruggleofmankind.Yetbecause menhavenotknownthetruththey haveclutchedindesperationatthese shoddymodernsubstitutes,moreoften tragicparodiesofthesynthesisthey werecreatedtoknowandsoobviouslyhungerfor.ForthereisamystiqueinCommunism,inNazism,andin Shintoism,inBuddhism,andevenin thesavagefear-riddenloreofthe jungle.
Butthereis,too,theCatholic Church-with398,000,000ofmenof everynation,everyraceand colouronearth,believinginherdoctrines,satisfiedthatinCatholicism theyhavefoundatlasttheTruthof thingsandtheonlysatisfyinganswer
toeveryquestiontheymightaskof thepurposeoflife,thedestinyofman andmeaningofthisdynamicdramaot humanhistory.
AndIhopeinthesesessionstoexplainforyouweekbyweeksomethingofthegreatbodyoftruthsthe CatholicChurchhaspreservednowfor nearlytwothousandyears,sincethey firstwereutteredbythelipsofChrist. Afewwordsfirsteacheveningon thesedoctrinesofCatholicismand thenfortheremainderofthesession IshallgiveyoutheCatholicanswer toanyquestionsyouwishtosendme onthesubjectsIhavementioned.

Whereisitallheading,forme?Does Godwantmetodoanythingparticularinlife,andifso,wherecanIfind outwhatIamtodo?TheCatholic Churchanswersalltheseandathousandotherquestionsveryclearly,and withDivineauthority.Asforthe problemsofmentakenasasociety, wellthoseproblemschangewitheach generation.Butitmightbeputlike this:Howcanmensoconducttheir affairsthatineachsucceedingageand,inparticular,inourownagemengetafairchancetoearnadecentliving,sothatnomanshouldlive inwantamidsttheabundanceofthe goodthingsthisearthproduces,and sothatinsocietyandbecauseofit theindividualmightthemoreeasily
achievethatdevelopmentofhiswhole personalityandthedestinyforwhich hewascreated.
"TheChurchoughttohavegiven theanswerlongago!"-anditdid. AndtheanswerIfonewereto enumeratethenumberofoccasions whenthePopeshaverepeatedtothe worldingeneral,andCatholicsinparticular,theremedyforthesocial abusesofevenonlymoderntimes,it wouldmakeanimposinglist.The manyencyclicalsonthesocialquestion,andontherelationsbetween ChurchandState,aremonumental documents,andmilestonesinthehistoryofsocialprogress.Itisbecause soverymanypeopledon'tevenknow oftheexistenceofthesedocuments embodyingtheChurch'steachingthat wehavecommenedthissessiontoexplainthemforallwhocaretolisten.
Andasfor"goodoldUnclePeter" settingtheworldright,itishardto havetheenthusiasmsofchildhood throwninyourface.Youknow,St. Paulhasafewlinesthatrathersuggestthemselvesaproposofone'syouthfulphilosophyoflife.Hesays: "WhenIwasachild,Ispokeasa child, Iunderstoodasachild,Ithoughtas achild.

Therecanonlybethelatter.Nobody willdenythat,onthegigantictree whichtheChurchhasplantedinEuropeandtransplantedfromthereinto othercontinentstherearedrybranchesandparasiteblossoms.However,isthepresentculturalcrisisnot aproofofwhatwillbecomeofmankindifitlosestheChristianspirit?
IfthehumansoulisChristianby nature,asTertulliansaid,thensois humansociety.Whensocietyceases tobeChristianitfeelstheconsequenceimmediately.Itbreaksupthe naturalandsupernaturalorderand waversbetweenanarchyandtyranny; itlosestheconceptionofvaluesand aimsandofhumandignityandfinally sinksintoabsurdidolatry.
ChangingCulture,
ThereisnostaticChristianculture, thePatriarchcontinues.Evenifa basicstockofdoctrines,views,customsandinstitutionsisbeinghanded downthroughChristiangenerations thevitalprocessofChristianculture alwaystakesplaceinthepersonalrenewalofeachChristian,intheraising ofthenaturalintothesupernatural.
