Where Does the Communist Party Really Stand Regarding the War? Communist Party meetings are now busy passing resolutions calling for support for the Curtin Government and for an all-out effort in the war The objects of the belligerents have not changed against Fascism. simply because Russia has been brought into the conflict, yet what did Communists say three years ago? In the "Communist Review, A Monthly Magazine of the Theory and Practice of Marxism-Leninism," edited by R. Dixon, a member of the Central
Committee of the Communist Party of Australia, an article by R. Dixon, in its issue of January, 1940, was entitled "The Real Issue of the War." Here are some extracts (emphasis and cross headings ours): "On September 3, 1939, Australia became a participant in the imperialist war that had broken out in Europe. The Government made no pretence at consulting the Australian people before And taking this terrible decision. yet we are blandly informed that this is a war for democracy against fascism! .

Have the Allied objectives changed because Russia is involved? Well might we ask: Where is the democracy? Infamous Aims. "Mr. Menzies claims that, legally, Australia was at war with Germany from the moment Britain declared war. "The law can always be relied upon to supply arguments to justify the infamous and reactionary aims of the capitalist class, especially when slick lawyers have anything to do with it. "According to Mr. Menzies, Australia can be dragged. willy-nilly, behind the predatory aims and policies of the British Conservatives. Those who know British history know that it is crowded with wars of conquest which are abhorrent to us.
"And is this war any different? "Is there any justification for Australian participation in this war? . . "We were told that the last war was waged to 'make the world safe for democracy,' that it was a 'war to end war, to 'defend the rights of small nations,' and to 'make the world fit for heroes to live in,' etc. "This present war is being waged .
"From whatever angle one may look at this war it becomes ever more apparent that the great financial interests have everything to gain, for the war will make them richer and more dominant than ever. On the other hand, the working class, the farmers and the middle class, the vast majority of the population, have everything to lose from the war, inasmuch as they will provide the cannon fodder and in the factories and fields will be more brutally exploited and oppressed by the capitalist class. "It is, therefore, true to say that this war between the ruling classes of Germany and the Allied Powers to determine which group of imperialist slave-drivers are to dominate the world. . Catholic Scientist Finds New Cure For War Wounds 13iudyne ointment, a new cure for war wounds, has been discovered by Dr. George Sperti, Director of the Institutum Divi Thomae, in Cincinnati, which, though it was founded by Archbishop McNicholas only seven years ago, has an established position as one of the leading scientific reserve centres in the United States. The effective of Biodyne has been re-
ported to the War Department and the National Research Council. Dr. Sperti states that it is made under a secret formula including yeast and liver oils. Production can be increased to 1,000 lbs. a day should the need arise. Mgr. Miller, Dean of the institute, and Dr. Sperti spent several months in Washington earlier this year directing plans for the establishment of an Office of Technical Development to
function under the War Productions Board. They had the help of several of the country's leading scientists and principal Government officials., The sum needed to carry out its programme is estimated at 100,000,000 dollars. Rubber, food and nutrition, drugs, textiles, dehydrated packaging, transportation and substitute materials would all come under its consideration. Dr. Sperti was recently presented with the Catholic Action Medal of St. Bonaventure College, N.Y. "In the bestowal of this honour," he said on accepting it, "I know that tribute is being paid not to individual accomplishments but to all those Catholic men and women who through science are seeking truth for the honour and glory of the Church and the betterment r f mankind?'
