Itisinterestingtocomparethese "officialfigures"ofM.Maiskywiththe informationgiveninlastyear'sissue oftheofficialyearbooksoftheCatholicChurch,the"AnnuarioPontificio."
Of13ApostolicAdministratorsin thecountry'secclesiasticaljurisdiction since1926,elevenareinprisonorexile. whileinformationiswantingabout theothertwo,andtheirplaceofresidenceisnotknown.
ThevariousdiocesesofRussiawere entrustedtoApostolicAdministrators soonaftertheRevolution,moltenthe CommunistsrefusedtotolerattthepresenceofaBishop.Buteventhispro-
prisunedfrom1923to1926,andagain from1929to1933,andisnowreported inexileinLithuania.
InthesameArchdiocese,theMost Rev.VincentIlgin,ApostolicAdministratorinKharov,appointedin1926, wasimprisonedinDecemberofthat yearandthenexiled.Hehasbeen inLithuaniasince1933.
TheRev.MichaelJodokas,Apostolic AdministratorinKazan,Samara,and Simbirsk,wasimprisonedin1929and hasnotbeenreleased.
IntheDioceseofZytomir,MonsignorTheophilusShalski,ApostolicAdministrator,andtheVice-Administrator,MonsignorCasimirNaskreckv,were imprisonedin1926and1929,respectively,andhavebeenexiledsince1932.
TheRev.JohnSwiderski,Apostolic AdministratorintheDioceseofKamieniec,andhisVicar,theRev.Alexan derWierzwicki,wereimprisoned,the formerin1930,andthelatterin1932.

IdonotadmitthattheCatholic hurchsanctionssocialinjusticewithinherownfold.Butletusassume, forthesakeofargument,thatthere issuchsocialinjusticewithintheCatholicChurch.Itwoulddefinitelynot followthatthechargeofsocialinjusticeinAustraliaandourownState wasunfounded.
SupposethatIfounditmypainful dutytosaytoaman:"You'reamurderer,"thelogicalpositionwouldnot beperfectlyroundedoffbyhisreplying:"You'reanother."Hemaybe abletopointtomanyquietlittlemurdersIhavecommittedincorners-especiallytightcorners.Hemaybe abletobringinafinalverdictofguilty againstme.Butheisnotevenmakingthepretenceofapleathatheis notguiltyhimself.

theirnurses,asisdoneinpublichospitals,insteadofmerelytraining themforservicesrendered?
ThenunsinCatholichospitals-and theyaretrainednurses-arenotpaid anything.Theyspendtheirlivesin theserviceofthesickwithoutpayor hopeofearthlyreward.
TrainedlaynursesinCatholichospitalsarepaidawardwages.
InCatholichospitals,thetrainees receivethewageswhichtheresources ofthehospitalpermit.
IftheauthoritiesinanyCatholic hospitaltorinstitution)donotpay theiremployeesajustwagewhenthey canaffordtopayit,theirconductcannotbecondonedorexcused.
ButIhaveyettodiscoverthatsuch isthecase.Ifthehospitalsdonot pay,itisbecausetheycannotpay. Theycannotpaybecausetheythemselveshavebeenthevictimsofinjustice.Theydonotreceivethesupport towhichtheyhavearightasinstitutionsofpublicwelfare;atleast,they donotreceivesufficientsupport.

Correct.AndCatholichospitals,all ofwhichareopentothepublicwithoutdistinctionofcreedorreligion,are deservingofpublicsupport.What haveyoudonetosupportthem?
Theyarenotpaidbecausetheseinstitutionsarenotinapositiontopay them.Thesupporttheyreceivefrom thepublicortheGovernmentisquite insufficienttoerect,equip,staffand maintainthem;muchlesssupport theirinmates.TheSistersarenot paid.Theygivetheirservicesas theygivetheirlives,freelyandvoluntarily,tothesepooroutcasts.The girlsgivetheirservicesinthelaundries,whichareoftentheonlymeans Hofsupportwhichtheinstitutionhas.

The"HoboNews,-atradepaperfor hoboesintheU.S.A.,recentlypublish. edastirringeditorialurging"harvest stiffs"inthehoborankstoapplythemselvestofarmworkduringthepresent agriculturalemergency,andthenfollowedupitsrecruitingeditorialbycircularisingtheknownstoppingplaces ofthe"stiffs."Anofficialofthe newspaper,tosupporthiscontention thatamassback-to-the-farmmomecent onthepartofhoboeswouldbepeculiarlyappropriate,statedthattheoriginalwordfromwhich"hobo"derives was"hoeboy."Theeandtheywere graduallydropped;so,perhapsless gradually,wasthestrenuouslabourof thehoeboy;and-hoeboy"became "hobo" Withtheexceptionof personswhohaveoccasiontopryinto theoriginoftheword,peopleusing theterm"hobo"to-dayareunawareof itsderivationandformersignification. Acorrespondentinthisissuehas takenustotaskoverthequestionof whattheCatholicChurchinAustralia isdoingtoupliftthepeople'ssocial conditionsatthepresenttime.Now, rightatthejump,Imustinsistona distinction.Catholicsarenotthe Church,andwemustlookseparately attheactivitiesoftheofficialChurch andattheactivitiesofCatholicsas individualcitizens.
Itisacommonbuterroneousopinion thaturgestheChurchtosetfortha detailedeconomicorpoliticalprogramme.TheChurchwasnotfoundedtoregulatecivilsociety,ortounraveleconomicproblems.Shewas establishedbyChristprimarilyasthe Teacherandguardianofthesoulsof men.Themostthatcanbeexpected ofHerintemporalaffairsisthatShe laydownChristianprinciplesandrules ofconduct.Herresponsibilityisthen complete.Itis,then,forthepoliticianorsocialreformertoworkouta practicalanddetailedpr.igrammeon thelinesofthoseprinciples.1emcoral well-beingisanaturalgoodtoberegulatedbymenaccorOlngtotherules ofnaturalprudence.TheChurch's obligationistowatchlesttheseplans offendagainstthemoralprinciplesof justiceandcharity.Regardingthe existingstateofaffairs,Shehasacquittedherselfnobly,declaringitto containmuchinjusticeanddemanding aspeedyremedy.Formanyobvious reasonstheChurchcannotspecifically patroniseanyparticularsystem.For onethinganumberofsystemsmaybe found,allequallyacceptableinHer eyes,inthattheyconformtoChristianprinciples.Again,anygiven systemmaystartwell,butfalleventuallyintothesnareof"advanced"unChristianideas.Tobefreetojudge allissuesimpartially,theChurchmust bepoliticallyunentangledanddisinterested.
Onefacthasbeenoverlookedbyalmostallthemodernsocialreformers, andthatisthattheChurchwasin thefieldlongbeforeanyofthem.
ThatPapalEncyclicalentitled"Forty yearsafaerwards,"suggeststheweary patienceoftheChurchwhichhasbeen waitingforoverhalfacenturyfor someonetoshareHerownfullrealisationoftheinjusticeandsubhumanism ofthepresentsocialsystem.Itis rathertametokeepexhortingtheCaCatholicChurch.andtheCatholic Press,togivealeadinthosematters inwhichtheyhavebeenfor50years themostforcefulandisolatedleaders. Wearenotwaitingtoseewhichway tojump,wearewaitingforasocialreformerwhowillstudythePapalEncyclicalsandbuildanewsocietyon thoseChristianprincipleswhichthe Popeshavesoclearlysetforth.
Nowthisiswheretheindividual Catholic,actinginhispositionasa
citizenofequalrightswithothers, comesin.Socialreformaccordingto Catholicidealswillnevercomeintoactualityuntilthepoliticiansareforced inthatdirectionbypressureofpublic opinion.Ithastakenfiftyyearsfor Catholicsocialideastoseepthrough tothemasses,andtheprocessisstill farfromcomplete.Alleducational workissimilarlyslow.Whenthishas beendonesufficiently,theprinciples ofCatholicsocialreconstructionhave tobetranslatedintoconcreteproposals.Anditispreciselyatthis pointthatdifficultiesarise.For,as Isaidabove,theremaybeseveralsolutionsallequallyacceptable,andthe troublewillbetogaintheassentofa majoritytoanygivenprogramme. "Reformer's".letterillustratethisperfectly.Therewillbedisputationeven overthestartingpoint,nottomention themethodsofprocedure.
InthelightofallthisIthinkitis tooeasytocondemntheordinary(-a-

Allthingsconsidered,Ithinkthat "Reformer"istoogloomyinhisoutlookandalittleunfair.ItwaslargelyCatholicpropagandathatbrought aboutChildEndowment."TheCatholicWorker"and"RuralLife"are doingreallyvaluableeducationalwork, andalloverAustraliagroupsareinexistenceforsocialpurposesrelevantto theirplaceinthesocialstructure.We arestilldefinitelyinthe"formation" stage,anditwillstillbeawhilebeforeweseenotableresults.Butthere isnodoubtthatwewillsecthem.

wasutteredatthe loseofacelebratedtrialcaserecently inNewYorkwhenthedefendantswere convictedforthepresentationofanobscene,indecent,immoralandimpure exhibition.JudgeOwenW.Bohan,at theCourtofGeneralSessions,sentencedthreepromotersoftheshow,"Wine. WomanandSong."Onedefendant, IsidoreHerk,wassentencedtosix monthsintheN.Y.CountyPenitentiary,andtheothersweregivensuspendedsentences.
ThetextofJudgeBohan'sopinionis asfollows:
"Thesedefendantswereconvicted byajuryforthecrimeofpresenting anobscene,indecent,immoralandimpureexhibition,called'Wine,Women andSong,'whichwouldtendtocorruptthemoralsofyouthandothers; amisdemeanor.Theyarcnowbefore thecourtforsentence.

Theprelatealsonotes,inhisdiscussionofthemissionaryactivitiesofthe Irishinallages,that130IrishSaints havefoundaplaceontheGermancalendar,45arehonouredasPatron SaintsinFrance,30inBelgium,and stillothersinItaly,Switzerlandand evenIceland.
Manyreasonshavebeenadvancedin ordertoexplainthisemigrationof SaintsfromIreland:Themissionary spiritoftheseearlyChristians;their desiretoconvertthepagansofGermanyandGaultothetrueFaith;the naturaltendencyoftheIrishtowards emigration;the800raidsofNorseinvaders,anyorallofwhichmayhave impelledthemtocrosstheseaand carrywiththemthewealthofarich Christianculture.
"Therewas,however,stillanother reasonforleavingtheircountry,"Mgr. OnWednesdaynextLentwillhewithusagain,andthemodiledregulationsregardingthefastareareminderthattheChurch placestheemphasisofmortificationoninterioracts.Theneed ofthemodernworldistobefound,notinhair-shirts,butinselfcontrol,whichisthefruitofinternaldiscipline.Itiscomparativelyeasytokeepafast,itisamatterofsomedifficultytokeep one'stemper.Thespiritualemphasisnecessarilyalterstomeet theconditionsofthetimeandplace.AndWhileitistruethat themodernworldisinfullflightfromreasonandthethingsof themind,itisnotherethatthebasisofmoderndisorderistobe found.Theworld'smaladyismoralratherthanrational-itisin thewillratherthanintheintellect.Theworlddreadsthought. butitabhorsdiscipline.Andtheneedofdiscipline,evenasaconcomitantofnaturalhappinessandsocialwell-being.isrecognised. evenbythepagans.
Thus,innopointmorethaninpenitentialpractice,isbetterillustratedtheinterdependenceofauthorityandliberty.The Churchcommands,asisHerdivineright,withthevoiceofChrist. Butshedoesnotcoerceandshecannotpoliceherregulations. Theindividualmanisjudgeandjuryforhisownlife.Healone decideshowfarhewillgoingenerosity.Wherethetestis merelyexternal,asinthenewpoliticalideologies,thereisalways thedoubt,eveninfulfilment,aboutpurityofmotives.Rutin thematterofinteriormortification,theonlypossiblehumanmotivescouldbethepleasureofstoicism.Andinthiseffeteage suchamotivemightwellbedoubted.Theaveragemanobeys theChurchtothebestofhisabilitybothbecauseherecognisesher divinerighttoteachandtocommand.andbecauseinobedience toherhefindsthebestandsurestguaranteeofthepreservation ofhisownessentialliberty.
Hence,inanationsuchasGermany,disciplineisbeingenforcedonthepeoplewilly-nilly.Andbeforewehavefinishedthis warweshallhaveatasteofthesamemedicine.Butallthis effortisexternalanditsonlymotivationisthenationalinterest. This,ofcourse,isanaturalgood,butthedisciplinewhichthe Churchdemandsisofanaltogetherdifferentorder.Shedemandsinteriordisciplineandforthisprocessofself-conquest sheoffersthehighestsupernaturalmotives.Andthisveryprocessofinternalself-conquestwhichisrequiredisitselfasymbol ofman'sessentialfreedomandoftheChurch'strustinthegoodnessofhumannature,supplementedbyDivinemotives.Fora manmustpolicehisownmortification.Onecannotliftoffhis scalptomakesurehehasself-control.NorwouldtheChurch wishforanysuchtest.Sheshowstheendclearly,sheprovides themostpowerfulmeanstoattainit.Fortherest,shetruststhe humanheart.
AtdifferentperiodsinthehistoryoftheChurchtherehave arisenzealotsofausteritysuchastheFlagellants,whoconfused therealnatureandpurposeofpenance.ThesewereunhesitatinglysuppressedbytheChurch,becausetheymadepenanceanendin itself,whereasitwas,andis,onlyameanstoawell-orderedspirituallife.JustastheChurchhasalwaysregardedthesinsofthe mindasgraverthanthesinsoftheflesh,soShehasexaltedinteriormortificationabovecorporalausterity.Itisquiteeasyto realisethereasonofthiswhenoneconsidersthatthechiefelement ofmoralendeavouristhehumanmindandwillco-operatingwith thegraceofGod.Itisthereforethespiritualfacultieswhichneed thepurificationofdiscipline,becauseonceorderedthesewilladequatelycontroltheaberrationsoftheflesh.TheHolySeason ofLmitoffersarespitefrommundaneworriesduringwhicha manshouldconsiderhismoreimmediatespiritualneedsandparticularlytowhatextentthesecanbeaidedbypenanceandprayer. Thewaveofpridethatsweptthe nationinAustralia'sprominentpartin therecentvictoriousBattleofEgypt hashaditsgrimcounterpartofsorrow inmanyahomeandfamilyasthe officialcasualtylistshavebeenreleased.ThesadnewshasbeenconveyedtoMrs.M.Cashen,ofParkerstreet,MileEnd,thatheryoungest son,PaulWilliam,waskilledinaction onOctober31.
ThedeceasedwasborninKalgoorlie, W.A.,in1918. Hisfather,thelate Mr.P.Cashen,residedforseveral yearsintheWesternStateafterhavingpreviouslybeenamemberofthe C.Y.M.S.inVictoria.ComingtoSouth Australia,"Bill"(ashewasmorefamiliarlyknown)waseducatedatthe BrothersofSt.JohntheBaptist (Thebarton)andChristianBrothers' College(Wakefield-street).
Hewasforseveralyearsanaltar boyatQueenofAngels'Church,and,
withhistwoelderbrothersearnedthe utmostconfidenceandrespectofparishpriestsandparishionersofThebarton.
Hewasaprominentmemberofthe CatholicYoungMen'sSociety,andrepresentedtheStateintennisattl-e firstInterstateC.Y.M.S.carnival.1 MelbourneatChristmas,1937. He wasalsowellknownintennisc:rcics intheWestTorrensdistrict.He heldthesecretaryshipoftheAdelaide branchoftheC.Y.M.S.fortwoyears priortoenlistment.
Cpl.Cashensailedforoverseasin November,1940,justtwoyearsprior tohisdeath,inwhichtimeheserved inPalestine,Syria,Libya(including sevenmonthsinTobruk,wherehe waswoundedduringthehistoricsiege) andfinallyinEgypt,where"hepoured outtherich,redwineofyouth."
Nofinertributetothe.sterlingcharacterofthelateCpl.Cashencanbe quotedthanthoseappearinginthe C.Y.M.S.magazine,"TheCatholic YoungMan,"forNovember.MourninghislosstotheSociety,acolleague writes:"HeradiatedCatholicmanliness,promotedharmonyandgood-fellowshipwithoutvisibleeffort,andinspiredhisfellow-membersbyhisexemplaryconduct.Hewaspossessed ofamostlikeabledisposition,aquiet senseofhumour,andagentlenature initsfinestsense."Hewasofthe typetheC.Y.M.S.andtheCatholic communitycouldillaffordtolose-a studentofCatholicActionandapotentialleader.

Oraretheycrawlingaboutthatlittered shoreseekingliketheotherstosave somethingforthemselvesfromthe wreckage,quarrellingandfighting amongthemselvesandwithothersfor somealreadyrottingprize,somerusty, seized-uphitofmachinery,somebars ofgoldthathavelosttheirpurchasingpower?
Saveinrespectofchurch-goingand perhapsasomewhatprivatefieldof personalandfamilymorality,canwe goaboutthecitiesorprovincesofa moderngreatcountryandpickoutthe Christians,theCatholics,bytheircon-

hasbeentaughttodisbelieveinthe supernatural,andthemeredestruction ofallthehopesplacedinthenatural isnotinitselfenoughtorekindlea faiththathasbeencorruptedatthe roots.
Forgenerations,too,menhavebeen taughttoseektheeasierway.Discipline,self-control,work,abstinence, sacrifice,personalresponsibility,the trueexerciseoffreedom,theunalterabletempoandrhythmoftheearth anditsfruits,allthesehavebeen mockedandderidedasout-of-datefor mantheinventor,manthecreator, manwhothinkshimselfagod.These, itistrue,areeasiertorecoverthan faithinthesupernatural,andweare witnessingto-daythefactthatunder revolutionaryleadershipandintense socialemotionthesecanberecovered
Yetfromnowonwardstherewillendurethecryofmechanised,enslaved manforliberation,forfaithandhope andcharity,acrywhich,throughignoranceandblindness,willbewordless, seekinghelpwithoutknowingthename oftheonlyhelpthatcanbegiven. versationandtheirbehaviour?Idoubt it.
Andthenwewonderwhyagenerationthatisgoingtopieces,thatis despairingofthephilosophiesupon whichitwasrearedandcrazilyclingingtonewpseudo-religionsthatarea mockerytothehumanintellect,appealingonlybythemassemotionalism whichtheygenerateinotherwiselost men,remainsuninterestedinthetruth ofwhichwearesupposedtoheliving witnesses!
ChristianityIsNotEasy.
Butwemustnotmisunderstandthe situation.Christianityneverwasand neverwillheaneasyfaith.Forour generationitisasupremelydifficult one.Forgenerationsnowtheworld
Buttheleadershipandtheexample arenecessary.Whatseemsamere theory,anabstractformulationofa perfectpatternwillneverwarmthe bloodandinspiretohardship,devotionandsacrifice.
GreatestOpportunity.
Andtheproblembeforeus,asIsee it,isnotatemporaloneonly.Itis notonlyaquestionofsavingourgeneration(ifthereyetbetime)from thedarkagesthataresurelyinstore forit.Itisfirstandforemosta spiritualone.
Herewearepresentedwiththe greatestopportunitythathasfallen totheChurchsinceitsearlydays, theopportunityoftranslatingourfaith intoactionforthebenefitofourneighbourswhoarebeingpreparedtounderstandatruefaithinaction.

Inverymanycasesthemorereligiousamanbecomesthelessrealinteresthetakesintheworldandworldly things.Insomecasesthisinterest inthespecificthingsofGodandhis ownsoulleadsamantrulytocuthimselfofffromtheworld,andthisno doubtisagoodthingforthefewcalledtoitaswellasfortheworldwhich benefitsspirituallyfromtheirprayers

andsacrifices;butinthemajorityof casesitleadsrathertoakindof spiritualandmoralindifferenceinthe affairsoftheworldtoanunquestioningacceptanceofthefashionofthe day.
Thusyougetthe(tome)always puzzlingspectacleofdevotedCatholics (sometimesprofessionallyweddedto thesubjectofChristiandoctrine)outjingoingthejingoesinnationalaffairs asthoughitwerethenationtheyworshippedinsteadofGod,contenttoremaintheornamentsoftheiraristocraticclass,asthoughGod'srevelation hadbeenthatofthegentleman'scode, prosperinginbigbusinessorfinance, asthoughthecapitalistworldcoincided withtheChristiancounsels,devoting themselvestothebattleofpartypolitics,asthoughthetriumphofRight overLeftorofRedoverBluewould settheworldbackonthepathof Christianity,orjustcontent-todrift alongthetideoftheworld,asthough thepettyscandalsofthedrawing-room, thepettypoliticsofthepub,thepetty moralsofthefactoryandshopwere worthyofthefullweeklyattentionof menandwomenwhopossesswithin themthekeytotheworld'shappiness.
SomethingWrongHere.
Thereissurelysomethingwrong here.Notwrongperhapswiththe soulsofChristianswhicharenotmy professionalbusinessandaboutwhich Iamnottrainedtojudge,butwrong withtheintellects,thecommonsense ofChristians.
Iftheybelievethatthefaithis morethanaprivatedispensationbetweenthemselvesandiGod,ifthey believethatitistherevelationof God'spattern,God'sorder,forallmen inthislifeforbodyaswellassoul, aswellasinthenext,thenit'sjust crazytoconfineone'sChristianinterest toSundayandthefourwallsofthe churchandanarrowseparatedsection ofpersonallife.
It'seithercrazinessorit'signorance, twostatesofmindthatmayrelievea manofpersonalresponsibility:But, unfortunately,theeffectsofcraziness andignoranceremaindisastrous,howeverlittlethelunaticorduncemaybe responsible.
Iamboldenoughtosuggestthat Christianity'schanceoftakingfulladvantageofthepresentdisillusionment oftheworlddependsverymuchon theChristian,good,badorindifferent, comingtorealisethathepossessesa faiththatmustlogicallymakean enormousdifferencetohiswayof thinkingandwayofbehavingatall momentsofhislife.
RenewedInterestinChristianity.
Thereisnowarenewedinterestin Christianity,but,asIhavesuggested. thereseemstobeaveritableabyssbetweenthetheoryandthepractice,and Imeanbypracticetheputtingof Christianvalisesintooperationjust therewherethemanofto-dayisfeelingthespiritual,moral,cultural,so-

cial,economic,artistic,pinch.Letthe Christiangiveanexample-letthousandsandmillionsofChristians,good, badorindifferent,giveanexampleof howChristianityreactsinpracticein themarket-place,andtheworldwill soonenoughprickupitsears. Butsofarwhenthemanofthe worldlooksforaChristian,whatdoes hefind:anEnglishman,aGerman,an Irishman,amillionaire,alawyer,a RightorLeftpolitician,aprofessional ecclesiastic,adisgruntledworker,a soldier,abusinessman,afarmer,and soheturnsawaydisappointed.Not thatthesethingsarenecessarilywrong orinconsistentwithChristianity,but franklyIwouldpreferthemanof theworldtofindadulterers,murderersandthieveswhoneverthelessthink inChristianvalues,howeverfarthey maybefrompractisingthem,tomen sointentupontheirgoodprofessions andavocations,ledaccordingtothe codeoftheworld,thattheChristianityinthemcannotbediscerned.
Iamnotgoingtosuggestherethat Christiansshouldbesoheroicasto renouncetheircareersandjobsbecauseintheworldto-daysolittleof themisconsistentwithChristianity.I wouldonlyindicateasastartthat Christiansshouldcometorealisethat theyhavealogical,anintellectual duty,atleasttothinkasChristians,to seeaproblem,tounderstndthatthere isandmustbeaconflictbetweenthe valuesofadisintegrating,godlesscivilisationandthevaluesoftheonetrue religionthathasenduredfortwothousandyearsandwhoseteachinghas beendisregardedwithresultsthathave almostclassicallyfollowedthepredictionsandwarningsofpreacherar prophet.
AndIamsuggestingthatthisconflictisbeingillustratedinthelivesof allofusto-day,memberssofthe Churchandcitizensoftheworld.
After-WarRegimentation.
Itwouldbestupidtopretendthat matterscouldremainatthatintellectuallevel.Wecannottellhowthe worldwillfare,butitisfairlysafeto prophecyasteadyincreaseintheregimentationoftheindividualbysecularistStatesservingthemachineaccordingtothepaganaimsofoneideology oranother.Thedestructionanddisruptioncausedbythewararebound as.farasIcansee,toleadtosomesuch controlinordertostaveoffanarchy andtosettheworldrebuilding.The onlyalternativeisanarchy.
Howlongsuchcontrolwilllastno mancansay.Ipersonallybelieve thatitwillultimatelyfail,becauseit willbeonlyanother-andthistimea
desperate-formofthatmaterialism whichhassocompletelyfailedspiritual man.
Butwhateveritsshapeanddestiny, wecanatleastbecertainthatitwill inpracticeleaveverylittleroomindeedfortheChristianasChristian.And becauseofthis,howevereasyitmay betothinkasChristians,itwillbecomeincreasinglyhardtobehaveas Christians-nolesshardperhapsforall ofusto-morrowasitishardto-day forChristiansundertotalitariandomination.

Yetfromnowonwardstherewillendurethecryofmechanised,enslaved manforliberation,forfaithandhope andcharity,acrywhich,throughignoranceandblindness,willbewordless,seekinghelpwithoutknowingthe nameoftheonlyhelpthatcanbe given.
Andtheanswercanonlycomefrom Christians,Christians courageous enoughtospeakandlivetheirfaith,in sofarastheyhaveanyopportunity, inthemarket-place.
TimeisShort.
Butthetimeisshort-desperately short;andifChristianityistohave itsbeneficenteffectinthenearfuture, wemustraceagainsttime.Ibelieve thatthereisagreatopportunity,but precioustimeisdailybeingwasted. Thereisagenuinereturntothatsobrietyandhumilityofmindwhichis consonantwithChristianity,areturn, asProfessorJoadhasrecentlyputit, "fromsunshinetoshadow."Alive, week-day,livedChristianityonthe partofthemillionsofChristianswho arestillfree,couldprofoundlyaffect therevolutionthatisbeingmadeby exhibiting,asitwere,theanswerfor whichthemassesarereallyseeking. ButIfeelthatitisallornothing.The opportunitywillnotcontinue.
Iftherevolutionaryforcesgetaway withtheirpresentideas,theywillbe buttressedbytheirresistiblestrength ofthemachineandthetechniqueof absolutepowerwhichitmakespossible.Christianitymaythenbefaced withthechoiceofconformitytothe neworderorthecatacombs.
Thethirdway,thewayofopenwitnessinthemarket-placetothetruththewaythatisstillopentous,though wetakesolittleadvantageofitwilldisappearforallsavethosewho havethestuffofmartyrdomwithin them.

ThefutureofAustralia'spopulation wasreviewedbyMr.G.R.Bohun,who. besidesquotingdisconcertingstatistics, pointedtothedefectsineducationresponsibleforthegenerallossofmoral consciousness.Acampaignagainstimmoralsensationalisminliterature, films,etc.,wouldbearealcampaign for"nationalpreservation."
Attheconclusionofthesession, Mr.ColinClarkexpoundedthemost
radicalstatementsoftherecentPopes withregardtotheredistributionof wealth.Theabusesofmonopoly capitalismaretoberemedied,hesaid, bytheprohibitionofadvertising,of speculation,andofallunnecessary companytrading.Taxationshould begradedsoastofallmostheavilyon bigcapitalsandcompanies.Thealternativetoownershipofpropertyis theacceptanceofslavery-evenifthe latterbecalled"permanentemployment."

Originallyasimplepolytheism, Shintoto-dayhasdevelopedintoa variedandcomplicatedreligion,the mainprincipleofwhichistheworship ofancestors,especiallytheancestors oftheEmperor,ando:theEmperor himself,who,asthedirectdescendant oftheSun-Goddess,isbyrightbelieved tobethedestinedrulerofthewhole earth.Thoughtheinfluenceofother religionsinaddingnon-Shintoelements isofinteresttothetheologian,itis theassumptionofdivinedescentfor theEmperorofJapanandfortheJapanesepeoplewhichisofthegreatest practicalimportanceto-day,asitconstitutesthepropagandaweaponfor promotingandmaintainingtheloyalty oftheJapanesepeople.
BeforeA.D.522thenationalfaithof JapanwasknownasKaminoMichi thewayoftheGods),butfromthat year,withtheintroductionofBuddhism,itbecameknownasShinto,which istheequivalentinChinesecharacters oftheformerJapanesename.The historyofthisearlyperiodofShintois teasedentirelyonthefirstwrittenrecordsofJapan,which,thoughcredited withhistoricalaccuracybytheJapaneseDepartmentofEducation,areessentiallymythologicalincharacter, .indtell,,fthecreationoftheearth throughtheunionoftwogods,andthe ultimateestablishmentabout2,600 yearsagobyJimrnuTennooftheImperiallinewhichwasdestinedtorule throughageseternal.
AfterthecomingofBuddhismto Japan,Shinto,thoughitsurvived,went intoabeyance,andforabout1,200 yearswasaveryminorinfluenceinthe religiouslivesofthepeopleofJapan. Itsrevivalwasapoliticalexpedient forunifyingthecountry,andwasfirst advocatedtowardstheendofthe eighteenthcenturybyMotooriNorinaga,agreatnationalistscholar.Motoori'sideas,however,werenotput intoeffectuntiltherestorationofthe EmperorMeiji,whentheneedfora unifyingfaithwasrealised.TheofficialintroductionofShintoasthenationalfaithwasforsomeyearsthe causeofbitterreligiousdisputes,which ultimatelyforcedtheGovernmentto allowgreaterfreedominreligiousbe:ief.However,Shintoremainedthe nationalfaith,and,thoughinsubsequentyearsitwanedalittle,ithas neverlostthepositioninwonin1868. Latterlyithasagainincreaseditsinfluence,gainingnewstrengthfromdoctrinalandphilosophicborrowingswhich areafarcryfromtheoriginalfaith.
ModernExtensionofShinto.
ThepresentsignificanceofShinto canbeamplyillustratedbyquotation fromoneofthemostrecentpublicationsofaprominentShintoadvocate, entitled"TheGreatShintoPurifica-
tionRitualandtheDivineMissionof Nippon. AprophecyoftheDawn ofaNewAge."Accordingtothis pamphlet,Japanistheoriginalmotherlandofthehumanraceandtheland towhichallcivilisationsowetheirorigin.Assuch,Japanisnowwaginga holywartoreuniteallnationsunder theoneroof-theuniversalfamily householdwhereeachnationistofind itsproperplaceunderthedivineprotectionofhisImperialMajesty,who, asthedirectdescendantoftheSunGoddess,isthe"cosmiclifecentre."
Further,Japan"istopermeatethe wholeearthwithonecosmicvitality embodiedinourDivinesovereignso thatallthesegregatednationalunits maybeledtore-unitethemselves spirituallywiththesincerefeelingof brotherssharingthesameblood."
WhereafewyearsagotheJapanese onlywerenamedasaraceofdivine descent,nowthewholeworldhasa placeintheheavenlyfamily.This extensionofShintofitstheaspirations ofthoseJapanesewhoregardtheworld asripeforconquest.Itisenunciated inthefollowingpassagefromthesame pamphlet:-
"Allbeingsbothanimateandinanimateunderheavenhavetheirrootsin commonastheywerebornofone divinevitalrace. Itfollowsthat byseekingtotracetheirorigin,they willbeabletoreachthesamefountainheadofcosmiclife,outofwhichthey haveallsprung.Itisonemajorlife thathasbecomediversifiedintomany minorlivesandthelatterwillbereintegratedagainintotheformer,andthis iswhatcharacterisesthecreativephil osophyoftheWayoftheGods..."
"AccordingtotheWayoftheGods, thecosmiclife-rootwhichhasgiven birthtoallthingsisbelievedtobe beginninglessandendless;itisaconstantoperationtranscendingtimeand spaceandthusthepastlonggone-by andthedistantfuturecometomeetin theeternalpresent. Quiteinlinewiththisutteranceis thedecreeofthePeople'sCommissariat ofEducationofFebruary27,1940,No. 312,whichreadsinpart:
"(1)Thedirectorsofhighschools shallexamineatthepedagogicalconferencesthequestionofthemeasures forimprovementofthemethodsorthe anti-religiousworkinschool.
"121Alldepartmentsofpubliceducationandschooldirectorsareinstructedtoorganiseanti-religiouswork amongtheparentsofthepupils."
SincePolishtroopshavebeenfightinginRussiatheSovietGovernment haspermitted52Polishprieststoserve aschaplainswiththePolishforces. BishopGawlina,OrdinaryofthePolishforces,recentlyvisitedRussia,and wasgrantedexceedinglywideecclesiasticalandpastoralfacultiesbythe HolyFathertohelphimtomeetthe importantproblemsconnectedwith hismission.
