Thefollowingletterhasbeenreceiv-edfromRt.Rev.MonsignorHawesby Mr.H.J.Eales,F.R.I.A.A.MonsignorHawes,whowasformerlyinthe GeraldtonDiocese,andwhodesigned manyoftheChurchbuildingsthereis nowlivingasaFranciscanTertiary hermitonCatIsland,intheBahamas: Sortingoutoldlettersandpapers yesterday,Icameonyourletterof April29,1940,whichIhadputby atthattime,asIwasveryverybusy inbuildingoperations,andindeed havebeensorightuptothisEaster last.ButnowIhavereallyhung upmytrowelforgood,likethe knights'bannersinWestminsterAbbey!Ifeelveryworn-out,tiredand feeble.IthoughtI'dfinishedwith architectureandbuildingwhenIleft WA.,butassoonasIpitchedmytent ,onthisislandIgotrightdowntoit againliketheearlydaysinMullewa.I boughtasmallsailingboat(acutter, 22feetlongondeck),andwitho,ie blackboyforcrewInavigatedhe, some300milesfromtheplacecfpurchase,Abaco,landinghereinFebruary.1940.Sincethen,byfiegrace ofGod,IhaveplantedtheCatholic ChurchonCatIsland,buildingthree churchesandalittlemonasteryand chapelformyself.Ihavealittleflock nowofsomesixtybaptisedCatholics 'andsomefortymorecatechumensunderinstruction.CatIslandwasprobablythesecondlandfallofColumbus afterSanSalvador,andhenamedit Fernandez,andtheoriginalnamelingersinFernandezPointandBay,which IcanseefrommywindowwhereI'm writing.LaterunderEngland'sgood Protestantoccupationthebeautiful oldnameofSanSalvadorwaschanged for"Watling'sIsland,"afterthename ofablood-thirstyrum-soddenpirate. Sometwentyyearsago,inresponseto thehistoricalresearchesandthesolicitationsoftheBenedictineFathersin Nassau,theGovernmentofficiallygazettedthenameofWatling'sIsland backto"SanSalvador"-andabeautifullittlestone-vaultedchurchhas beenbuiltneartheprobablesiteof [olumbus'firstlanding:andthereis usuallyaBenedictinemonkinresidencethere.Itisnearthebigstone

Withsuchprimitive.onditionsas aretobefoundintheout-islandsof theBahamas,onecouldhardlyattain toacloserFranciscanobservanceof GospelPovertythansimplytolive amongthepeopleastheyliveand trytosharetheirprivationsandhardshipsascheerfullyandbravelyas theybearthesethemselves

HereonCatIsland,somefiftymiles long,thereare4,000people,allnegroes -nowhitesatall.EventheGovernment"Commissioner"isa"coloured"man,albeitwell-educatedandcap. able.Whatpassesforreligionis mostlyonlyahypocriticalveneerof copioushymn-singingandignorant rantingthatcloakssexualpromiscuity; stealingandperjuryinthepolicecourt. Thewealthycliqueofwhites(Bahamian-born)inNassauexploitthepoor people:merchantsandrum-purveyors runtheParliament,gettinginand keepinginbyopenbriberyandcorruption-andtheParliamentopposes andthwartsallthewiseandcharitable endeavoursoftheDukeofWindson(as Governor)toamelioratethewa,,esand conditionsoftheislanders. And thereisthesamesortofthingin U.S.A. Racialprejudicesegregates thenegroaseffectivelyasawalled-in Ghetto-andin"MeinKampf"Hitler modelledmuchofhisJewishpolicy fromthe"JimCrow"policyofthat greatDemocracy,theU.S.A.Butwe mustneedssee"ChristintheNegro"' andintheNegro"theleastofthese :trybrethren."

CatIslandissupposedtobeafairlyprosperousfruit-growingislandandwithgoodseasonsandplentyof raintheydon'tdotoobadly.Last yearwehaveaterriblehurricane,the worsteverknowntostrikeCatIsland, comparativelyshort,onlyfourhours, butawindvelocityof200milesan hour.Mostofthefruittreesweredestroyed:andtheselastfivemonths we'vehadadrought,onlyjustbroken bygoodrainstheselastfewdays.Lots ofthepeopleseemtolivejustonthe borderofstarvation-justabitofIndiancornhominey,with,sometimes,a

Correct.ButIamnotawareof havingsaidanythingwhichwasnot true;norofhavingmadeanycommentwhichwasnotjustified. Youalwaysaccountfortheirfailure byblamingtheProtestantparty.

Thatisnotcorrect.Twolettersconcerningunhappymixedmarriageswere discussedinrecentSessions,thefirst from"MixedMarriage,"Sydney;the otherfrom"AnotherMixedMarriage," Victoria.Inthecaseoftheformer, thefailurewasduetothecrueltyof aCatholichusbandwhohadgoneover toCommunism.Inthelattercase,the unhappinessinthehomewasdueto theunreasoningbigotryofanotherwiseexcellentProtestanthusband.

Butitwasneitherstatednorimpliedthateveryfailureinthecaseof amixedmarriagewasduetotheProtestantparty.

Unhappinessinmarriagemaybedue toascoreofthings,forwhichhusband orwifeorbotharetoblame.Mixed marriagedoesnoteliminatethecauses ofunhappinesstowhichallmarriages, mixedorotherwise,aresubject.It merelyaddsanextrapotentialcause ofunhappiness,namely,difficulties overreligion.Thisonefactormay domuchtowreckmarriedhappiness, evenwhenthemarriageisallthat couldbedesiredfromeveryother pointofview.

Whenthefailureofamarriageis -duetodifficultiesoverreligion,the reasonistobefound,inpractically everycase,intherefusalofthenonCatholicpartytoobservethepromises madebeforethemarriagetakesplace.

But,whenthefailureofmarriageis duetootherreasons,itisunfortunatelytruethattheresponsibilitynotinfrequentiyfallsontheshouldersof theCatholicparty.

Thatistrue;especiallywhenthe failureofmarriageiscluetofactors otherthandifficultiesoverreligion. ImarriedaCatholicmanwhothought somuchofhisreligionthathewould notmissMassonSundayorthink

Sofar,sogood.Hewasatthe timefaithfultosomeofhisobligations asaCatholic Iwasobligedtosubmittohiswishand bemarriedintheCatholicChurch, orlosethis"manamongmen."AlthoughIwasnotpleasedatthis,I realisedthatIwouldnotbebreakinganylawofmyChurchbymarryinginhis.Ithereforemadethe necessarypromiseswithregardto anychildrenofthemarriage.

Youfulfilledtheconditionsrequired bytheChurchbeforeadispensation formixedmarriagecanbegranted. Hutthatalonewouldnothesufficient toguaranteeahappymarriage.

IadmiredhisloyaltytohisChurch, andthoughtIwouldhaveatruly loyalhusband. Hadhebeenreallyloyaltothe Church,hewouldhavebeenaloyal husband.Whilemanypeople,these days,condoneorapprovemaritalinfidelity,theCatholicChurchcondemns itabsolutelyasamostseriouscrime.

AFAITHLESSHUSBAND.

Isoonfoundoutmymistake.Befole ayearwaspassed,my"good,"loyal Catholichusbandwas=faithfulto me. Inbeingunfaithfultoyou,hewas beingmostunfaithfultotheteaching oftheCatholicChurch.TheCommandmentsofGodarenotlikethe questionsonanexaminationpaper: "Notmorethantwotobeattempted." Theymustbefaithfullyobservedin theirentirety.Themanwhobreaks anyoneofthemisdisloyaltoGod, andtherebydisloyaltotheChurch whichteachesthoseCommandments. Yourhusband'sinfidelityisnot uniqueinhumanexperience.Henry VIII.thoughtsomuchofhisChurch thathewroteabook"InDefenceof IheSevenSacraments,"againstthe innnovationofMartinLuther.For thisthePopeconferreduponhimthe title:"DefenderoftheFaith";atitle stillretainedbytheEnglishSovereigns.Buttheconfidenceofthe Popewasnotjustified,assubsequent eventsshowedclearlyenough.He profanedtheSacramentofMarriage whichhehaddefendedagainstLuther, contractedanumberofmarriagesone aftertheother,andattemptedtorid

himselfofthecondemnationofthe Churchbyrepudiatingtheauthority oftheChurch,andbyhavinghimself proclaimeditssupremeheadbyact ofParliament. Itwouldbeinterestingtoknow whetheryourhusbandstillretainshis formerattitudetohisChurch,after havingbetrayedtheChurchbyhisinfidelitytohislawfulwife.

* * * * ALIVINGEXCUSE.

HetoldmeIwasnothiswife,but onlyhismistressandthathewas notobligedtobefaithfultoa"here. tic."

EitherheisalmostincrediblyignorantoftheteachingoftheCatholic Church,orelsehewasguiltyofshamelesslyingandbadfaith.

Inthecircumstances,thelatteralternative-unpleasantasitis-seems tobethemoreprobable.Heinsisted onbeingmarriedintheCatholic Churchandhemust,therefore,have knownthattheChurchwouldnothave recognisedhismarriageasvalidhad itbeencontractedoutsidetheChurch. Thisimpliesthatheknewthathis marriageintheCatholicChurchwould berecognisedasvalid.

HedisgracedhisChurchbyhisinfidelitytoyou,and,inordertoexcusehiscrime,hedidnothesitateto haverecoursetothedespicablelie thattheChurchdidnotobligehimto befaithfultoawifewhowasa"heretic." Hesaidthis,mindyou,afterIhad beenmarriedintheCatholicChurch byaCatholicpriest.

Thatconfirmswhathasjustbeen said.

HISLAWFULWIFE.

ThecivillawheldthatIwashislawfulwife,ashefoundwhenIappliedforandobtainedadivorceon thegroundsofhisinfidelity. Youwerehislawfulwifeinthe eyesoftheChurcha,wellasofthe

State.Infact,accordingtothe plicitteachingoftheCatholicChurch, youarestillhislawfulwifeinthe eyesofGod;fortheChurchdoesnot recognisetherightorpowerofthe civilpowertodissolvethemarriage nondbetweenyou.

AccordingtothesameCatholicteaching,youhadeveryjustificationfor seekingajudicialseparation.

THECUSTODYOFTHECHILD.

Igotthecustodyofthechildwhich, needlesstosay,Idonotnowfeel obligedtobringupintheCatholic,. Faith,asIcertainlywouldhave doneifmyhusbandhadbeenas faithfultomeashewastohis Church.

Youarequitemistakeninthinking thatyourhusbandwasfaithfultothe CatholicChurch.Inbeingunfaithful toyou,hewasunfaithfultotheCatholicChurch;ashasbeenalreadyexplained.Withoutsincererepentance forhissin,andagenuineeffortto makeupfortheharmhehasdone,he oouldnotreceivetheSacramentsof. theChurch.Werehetoattemptto receivethemwithouthavingfirstsincerelyrepented,hewouldmerelyadd theguiltofsacrilegetothesinsalreadycommitted.

Inthecircumstances,onecanunderstandandsympathisewithyourreluctancetobringyourchildupinthe atholicreligion.Butthepromise youmadewasnotmadetoyourhusband,norcouldhedispenseyoufrom it.Hisinfidelitytoyoudoesnotdispenseyoufromyourownmarriage vows,whilethebondofmarriageendures.

IfthatistheteachingofyourChurch, thenIthankGodIamnotaCatholic,andwouldbeverysorryto bringmychilduptoholdsuch views.

Ihopeyouaresatisfiedwiththe treatmentyourletterhasreceived. Iamnotabigot,andbelievethatthe CatholicChurchisnotresponsible fortheun-Christianbehaviourof someofitsmembers.

Thatyouarenotabigotisclear fromyourwholeletter.Nevertheless, itseemstomethatyouarejudging theCatholicChurchontheinfidelity ofoneofitsmemberswhenyoudeclinetofulfilyourpromisetohave thechildbrcughtupintheCa.hoic religion.

Bigotryandignorancearenotex:111,sivetoProtestants,norarewisdom andtolerancetobefoundinevery Catholic.

Thatisallquitetrue.ButIwould liketocallyourattentiontotwo facts:Thefirstisthatbigotryandignoranceusuallygotogether-theyare associatedascauseandeffect;thesecondisthatthesectariancampaigns whichsometimesragelikeepidemics arenotusuallyinspiredbyCatholics.

Take,forinstance,thepresentcampaignofpoisonouslyingaboutthe Pope;orthebiternesscausedbyforged"CatholicAction"documents,publishedandcirculatedbythe"ProtestantWorld"coterieofbigots.

ButinfairnesstoProtestantsgenerally,itmustbestatedthatthesecampaignsareusuallyorganisedbyunscrupulousandhatefulminorities

whicharedespisedasmuchbydecent ProtestantsastheyarebyCatholics.

ThecampaignagainstthePopeemanatesfromPro-Sovietsourcesin EnglandandAmerica,andispartof acampaigntodisrupttheunityofthe Empirebysectarianism.

ISONERELIGIONASGOODAS ANOTHER?

Therearegoodandbadonbothsides, whetherCatholicorProtest.

Correct.IfaProtestantleadsa goodlife,itisallthemoretohiscredit,becausehelacksthedefinite spiritualguidanceinmattersofbelief andmorals,andalltheotherhelps conducivetogoodnessoflifewhich theCatholicChurchalonecangive.

If,ontheotherhand,aCatholic leadsabadlife,itisallthemoreto hisdiscreditandhisevil-doingisless easytoexcuseforthereasonsalready given.Hebelongstotheclassof peoplewhomSt.Paulcondemnedas beingworsethaninfidels. Oneisasgoodastheother,and sometimesbetter.

Ifyouarespeakingofindividuals, yourstatementisquitecorrect.Itis nottrue,however,ifyoumeanthat anyformofProtestantismisasgood astheCatholicreligion.Protestantism,especiallyinitscontemporary forms,retainsverylittleofthepositivecontentoftheChristianRevelation.anddoesnotseemcapableof givinganydefiniteandauthoritative guidanceinproblemsaffectingthe veryfundamentalsofbeliefand morals.

Itmaybeadded,moreover,that thosethingsinProtestantismwhich helpmentoleadlivesworthyof Christiansarepreciselythoseelements whichwereretainedbytheReformers whenthenbrokeawayfromtheCatholicChurchinthe,XVIth.century.

ApriestinMelbournerecentlyrefused toallowtheflagonthecoffinofa Catholicreturnedsoldier;andhis behaviourwasadisgracetoyourreligion.

Youhavebeenmisledbyaninaccuratereport.Heobjectedtothefact thattheflaginquestionwasnotreasonablyclean,andaskedtheimmediate relativeswhetheritwastheirwishthat theflagshouldbeused.Whenthey intimatedthattheywishedtheavailableflagtobeused,hepermittedit.

aCatholicsoldier,onlythoseprayers andritesareallowedwhicharein keepingwiththereligionheprofessed. Nooneinhissenseswouldsuggest that,becauseaCatholicisareturned soldier,hemustsubmittoreligious ritesdrawnupbynon-Catholicofficials oftheReturnedSoldiers'League,howeverwell-meaningandgood-hearted thoseofficialsmaybe.

Itisnowonderyourreligioncannotbe understoodbyProtestants;but thankgoodness,IamaProtestant. Whateverotherreasonsyoumay laveforbeingaProtestant,nothing youhavesubmittedinyourpresent letterwouldaffordreasonablegrounds foryourposition.MeantimetheCatholicreligioncancertainlybeunderstoodbyallwhohavethewilltotry tounderstandit,andwhoseekadequateinformationconcerningit,refusingtoformhastyjudgmentsbased upondefectiveandinaccurateknowledge.Onepointyoushouldputto yourselfisthis:IfthemajorityofofficialsintheReturnedSoldiers'League wereCatholics,andbecauseofthat, wantedaProtestantreturnedsoldier, whohaddied,tobeburiedwithCatholicrites,wouldyouthinkitwrong foraProtestantministertoobjectto thecompulsoryuseofCatholicritualat thegravesideofonewhohadnever professedtheCatholicreligion,buthad livedanddiedasaProtestant?You wouldnot.YouyourselfwouldsupporttheProtestantministerinhis protest;andIwouldagreewithyou, holdingthatbothheandyouwerejustified.SoallIaskyoutodoisto actontheprinciple,"Donotdoto otherswhatyouwouldnothavedone toyourself."AsCatholicshaveno righttoimposetheirreligiousritual onnon-Catholics,sonon-Catholics havenorighttoimposetheirreligious ritualonCatholics.Ifyoudonot agreewithmeonthatpoint,Iwillbe onlytoopleasedtosolvesuchdifficultiesasoccurtoyou.

TheFalseDecretalsdidnotoriginate inRome,butineitherRheimsor Toursabouttheyear850 In'view oftheanarchywhichfollowedthe deathofCharlemagne(800-814),the unknomitcompilerofthesedecrees apparentlysoughttofreetheclergy fromaggression.Theyintroduced nothingnewintotheessentialgovernmentoftheChurch,butaimedat protectingtheclergyfromtheunjust accusationsoflayprincesandtheunjustdemandsofimperiousprelates likeHincmarofRheims.Itwaspre-

ciselybecausetheyintroducedno novellegislationthattheywereso readilyacceptedasgenuine.

Theydidnothing,however,toenhancethesupremeauthorityofthe Popewhichwasuniversallyacknowledgedfromtheearliestcenturies. Theirauthenticitywasquestionedlong beforetheReformationbyCatholic theologiansandcanonists,PeterComestor(1178),GodfreyofViterbo(1180), StephenofTournai(1203),andNicholasofCusa(1431).

Power,anesteemedfriendofboth thesewell-knownandhighlyrespected families,officiated.

Enteringthechurchonthearmof herfather,thebridemadeacharmingpicture.Herrobewasofivory satin,cutonclassicallines,withfitting waistlinefromwhichfellalongfull train.Thehand-workedbridalveil, withdelicatelyarrangedtuberroses framingthecrown,fellintranslucent folds.Shecarriedasheafofroses andliliesandamother-of-pearlprayerbook.

MissPatriciaBowenmadeadainty bridesmaid.Herfrockwasofblue floralorgandiewithfittingbodice,full skirt,bluetullehatandsheafofgoldenroses.

Oneofthenaturalvirtueswhichintimespastwasasmuch awoman'sgloryasherhair-thevirtueofmodesty-isto-dayin thediscard.ThedecayofaChristiancivilisationisindicatednot somuchbythedeclineofthespecificallyChristianvirtuesasby thedenialofthenaturalvirtueswhicharetheirfoundation.If, forinstance,themodernsweredownrightlynegativingthenecessityforthedesirabilityofcharity,onewouldhavenoneedfor alarm.Butwhentheycommencetohymnhumanitarianism, philanthropy,and"service"assubstitutesforit,thenoneexperiencesdisillusionanddisgust.Similarlyinthematterofmodesty.

TheoldtimePuritanwasnotareallydangerousenemy,because hewasatleasthonestandevenaggressiveinerror.Butthe newsophistisanunfathomedperilpreciselybecauseheissubtle andtolerantandfair-seeming.Athousandsuchexamplescould beadducedinillustration,theseasonableoneisthatofthebeaches

Thefull-bloodedpaganofthepastmightinhisdecadencehave sneeredatmodestyindressbecausehequitefranklydespisedchastityasacurbonhisdesires.Butthemodernshaveothertactics. Theydonotsneeratmodesty;theytrytopretendthereisno suchthing.Inthematterofbeachcostumestheyrecogniseonly twoattitudes.Oneismockmodest,whichleadspeopletothe extremeofnecktokneeattire,whiletheotherleanstowards nudismandissupposedtobeaverymodernblendofcommon senseandathirstforliberty.

ThisisamatteronwhichthetraditionalCatholichungerfor theuseofreasonmightbepressed.Doesitreallycorrespondto realitytoclaimthatourbeachesarecommandeeredbythesetwo mutuallyexclusiveschools-theprudesandthelibertines?Does theprincipleoftheExcludedMiddleapplytobathingcostames?

Mustwechoosebetweentheneck-to-kneeadvocateandthegentlemanorladywhowouldtreadoursandsclothedonlyinthesmile ofemancipationfromtheChristiandecencies?Thesolutionof thisdifficultyliesinthefrankrecognitionoftheveryobviousfact oforiginalsinonwhichthevirtueofmodestydepends.Initself thehumanbodyisnotevil,buttotheimpairedfacultiesoffallen manitisapotentialdanger.Withtheincorporationoflustasa nationalpastimethereiseveryurgencyforthepreservationof whatevermodestyremains,formodestyhasalwaysbeenthewatchdogatthegateofchastity.Everybodywhobotherstothinkmust admitthattheextraordinarimpetustosexualismduringthese post-waryearshasderivedinsomemeasurefromco-educationand theoverfreeminglingofthesexes.Mixedbathinghasalsomade itscontribution.

Itisadvancedbysomethatthesightofimmodestattirehas teasedtoshocktheconsciencesofmostpeople.Tosomeextent thisisprobablytrue,butevenwereitwhollytrueitwouldnot spelltheobliterationofthevirtueofmodesty.Itsimplypointsto thefactthattheconsciencetendstohardenwheneveranevilpracticebecomesamatterofhabit.Sofarfrombeingthesubjectof boasting,oranindicationofgreaterspiritualbalance.itshould proveamatterofalarm,andshouldservetostirChristianpeople toarefinementofconscience.Theprevalenceofundesirable habitsandlackofpopularreactiontotheminnowayarguesthe validityofthehabitsorareasonfortheircontinuance.Itmust alsobestressedthatthereisdefinitelyamiddlewaybetween licenceandsuppression.Itwouldhesillytoimaginethatthe Churchhassomemorbiddreadofwater.Thereisevenascripturaltextwhichwouldservenotirreverentlyasapuninthematter,andthatisthatamanisbornintotheChurchbywaterand theHolyGhost,huttheChurchcertainlydoesnotbelievethatthe waterofthesurfofitselfwashesoutoriginalsinoritseffectson humannature.Indeedatthemomentitwouldseemthatthesea isbeingpermittedtoengulftheoutpostsoftheChristianlife.The practiceofmixedbathingwillcontinue,andthemostthatcanbe hopedforisthatthecivilauthoritieswillnotpandertothecantof thelibertinesandwillensurethattheleastpossibleoffenceis offeredtoChristianpeoplewhoenjoythesurf.Itisamatteralso inwhichtheexampleofourCatholicgirlswouldeventuallyhave far-reachingeffects.

OnThursday,January28,atideof anxiouswar-frettedhumanity,busy aboutmanythingsandimmersedin earthlycare,ebbedandflowedasusual inthestreetsofPerth.Butamid thisseaofmenthus"chainedand bowed"wasgroupedalittleunobtrusivebandwhosewholeintent wascentredonaworktheworthof whichnotevenangelsken.ThemembersofthatbandweretheCatholic teachersoftheArchdiocese,and,under thepresidencyoftheirArchbishop, theyhadmetwithinSt.Mary'srichlymouldedwallstopleadthatHeWhose guidingspirittheyhadoftencalled uponwithinthelastfewdayswould oncemoredeigntosendthatvivifying spirit,sothattheirplansindaysto comemightyieldrichfruit.

Duringtheprevioustwodays,the teachersoftheArchdiocese,meetingat VictoriaSquare,hadfollowedlectures onreligioussubjectsanddiscussed waysandmeansbywhichtheidealsof CatholicEducationmightfindmoreeffectiverealisationinourschools.

Asinpreviousyears,theConference hadthesplendidservicesofanumber ofourpriestsasdiscussion-leadersin thevariousage-groups.Theirwork inthisrespectwasablysupplemented bytheteachingfacultyoftheVictoria SquareTrainingCollege,whichwesentedanenlighteningpaperonthe teachingofprayersandBibleHistory tolittleones.Rev.FatherWallace, B.Sc.,dealtwiththesubjectofFirst ConfessionandFirstCommunion,and thoseresponsibleforthejuniorgroup inschoolwenthomethericherforhis stimulatingtalks.

Rev.FatherMurphy,B.A.,L.Ph., InspectorofSchcols,dealingwiththe 8-12yearsyllabus,heldthelivelyinterestofalargegroupashehelped tothreshoutdifficultiesintheteachingoftheCatechism.Teachersofpostprimaryclasseswereoccupiedwiththe much-discussedproblemofpromoting theapostolicspiritintheschool.

Mr.Doyle,S.J.,inapracticaland convincinglecture,showedtheiatense vitalityoftheSodalityofOurBlessed Lady,providedthataduebalancebetweenthespiritualandtheactiveis maintained.Asurprisinglyeffective meansofenkindlingtheapostolicspirit wasrevealedwhenRev.FatherLalor demonstratedandcommentedona meetingofaJuniorPraesidiumofthe LegionofMary.

Thedegreeinwhichconferences proveofdefinitevaluetoteachers whentheyreturntoclass-roomactivitiesissometimesquestioned.Prompted byalikecuriosity,wemayfindit temptingtospeculateonthesignificancefortheChurchinW.A.ofthe conferencejustheld.Tojudgealone fromthelargenumberofappreciative commentswhichgreetedenquiriesas tothediscussionsheld,itseemssaftoconjecturethatthisyear'seffortwl'l notbefruitless.Andshouldanextensiveestablishmentofjuniorunits oftheLegionofMarysoontakeplace andthezealofthoselittlebandsof apostlesproveasastonishinglysneessfulasinthecaseofsimilarpraesidia

HisGracetheArchbishop,speaking aftertheGospel,thankedtheBrothers andSistersforthesacrificestheyhad madeincomingdayafterdayforfive consecutivedaystoattendtheconferencesonPlainChantandChristian Doctrine.Heexpressedthewishthat theseconferenceswouldbeproductive ofmuchgoodinthepromotionofreligiousknowledgeandliturgicalmusic intheschoolsthroughouttheDiocese. HisGracethankedthem,too,fortheir splendidworkinthecauseofCatholic Education,acausewhichbutforthem wouldlanguishandwitheraway.

TherewerefewscenesintheGospel, HisGracecontinuedthatweremore beautifullyportrayedandfrequently illustratedbythegreatChristianartiststhanthosedepictingOurSaviour's warmaffectionforchildren.Teachers inCatholicschoolshadgraspedthat lessonoftheGospel.Withzeal,courageandefficiency,theyhadflungthe richtalentsofculturedmindsand insetratedheartsintothenobleenterpriseoftranslatingintoalivingand abidingrealitytheage-oldmandateof theDivineRedeemer:"Sufferthelittle childrentocomeuntomeandforbid themnot,forofsuchistheKingdom ofGod."Theynotonlytaughtreligion:theypractisedit.Theynot onlytaughtbypreceptthevirtuesof theCatholicFaith,theyalsoexemplifiedthemintheirdailylives.That wasthesecretoftheirsuccessinthe fieldofChristianEducation.St.John (hrysostomsaidoftheteachers: "Thereisnopainter,thereisnoscull). tor,norartist,thatcambecompared tothemanwhoknowshowtoform theheartsandmindsofyouth.This is.aworkfarsurpassingthenoblest creationsofman'sart,toreproducein

IlequotedtheApostolicConstitution onGregorianChant,andurgedthem toputintopracticeinallschools,primaryandsecondary,thecommandof theVicarofChrist:"Letthesecular andregularclergyundertheguidance oftheBishopsandlocalOrdinaries, makeeveryexertiontosecure,either personallyorthroughexperts,theliturgicalandmusicaleducationofthe people.Letthemregarditaspart oftheirworkofinstructinginChristianDoctrine.Thiswillbedonemore easilyifschoolsespecially,pioussodalities,andotherassociationsareinstructedinLiturgicalChant.LetallcommunitiesofReligious,ofSisters,and ofpiouswomen,besolicitousaboutthis inthevariouseducationalinstitutions entrustedtothem."TheDiocesan DirectorofSacredMusichadgiven themathree-dayconferenceonPlain Chant,andHisGracewaspleasedto knowthat250teachershadtakenadvantageofthatConference,andheappealedtothemtoco-operatewholeheartedlyintheirimportantwork withtheDiocesanDirector.

Hewasalsogratefultoknowthat theteacherswerebecomingmoreand moreinterestedinCatholicAction,on whichtheDirectorofCatholicAction hasgiventwointerestingandhelpful conferences."IfCatholicActionis toachievethesuccesswehopeitwill achieve,"concludedHisGrace,"the foundationmustbelaidfirmlyinthe seniorclassesofourprimaryandsecondaryschools."

LegionDemonstration.

Averyinterestingdemonstrationof aschoolpraesidiumoftheLegionof MaryinactionwasgivenontheWednesdaymorningoftheConference.The membersofapraesidiumfromSt.Joseph'sPrimarySchool,VictoriaSquare, conductedaroutinemeetingonthe stageinthelecturehall,andthe SpiritualDirector,FatherLalor,gave arunningcommentaryasthemeeting progressed.Thedemonstrationwas agreatsuccessandcreatedagreatdeal ofinterestamongsttheteacherspresent.FatherLalorprefacedhiscommentarywithanexplanationofthe parttheseLegiongroupsintheschools areplayingthroughouttheEastern StatesinthefieldofCatholicAction. Theoutstandingsuccessoftheseveral experimentalgroupscommencedinthe localschoolsduringthepastyearhad amplyjustifiedhisconfidenceinthe Legiontosolvethequestionofthe mostsuitableformofCatholicAction fortheschools.AsDirectorofCatholicAction,hehopedthatsoonevery schoolwouldhaveitsLegiongroup formingthestudentsintoapostles. Attheconclusionofthedemonstrationtherewasanadjournment,after whichanotherhourwasspentindiscussiononthesubjectoftheLegion intheschool.Anyschoolswishingto commenceapraesidiumwereaskedto contactFatherLaloratSt.Mary'sCathedral,andhepromisedtogivethem everyassistancepossible.Itishoped thatthecomingyearwillseeLegion praesidiaestablishedinmost,ifnot all,ofourschools.

Saturday,SundayandMonday,January23,24,and25,weredevotedtoGregorianChant,whentheDiocesanDirectorofSacredMusic,Rev.A.Lynch, gavedemonstratedtalksintheTheatre oftheChristianBrothers'College, whichwasgraciouslylentfortheoccasion.Besidesthequestionofordinaryvocaltraining,theyear'sprogrammewasstudiedandademonstrationlessonwithbeginnerswasgiven. Somereferencewasalsomadetothe teachingofsecularsongs.

Somethreehundredteacherstook partinthesingingoftheHighMass onThursday,January28.TheBro. theNactedasSchola,alternatingwith theSisters.FatherLynchconducted. Thesingingwassobeautifulthatgreat optimismastotheresultoftheirteachingthisyearismorethanjustified.

FIRSTANNUALCONFERENCE.

ThefirstannualConferenceofthe CatholicTeachers'Guildwasheldon the2Sth.ult.,immediatelyfollowing theHighMasswhichconcludedthe annualConferenceoftheDiocesan teachers.Themeetingtookplacein St.Mary'sChapterHall,underthe patronageofHisGracetheArchbishop. Areviewoftheactivitiesof1942was givenandplansfortheforthcoming yearwerediscussed.HisGracethe Archbishopaddressedtheteachers. HisGraceexpressedhisdelightthat ithadbeenfoundpossibletoestablish theGuild,andhehopedthattheideals forwhichithadbeenestablishedwould befulfilled,andthatitsmembership wouldbecomelargeryearbyyear.He remindedtheteachersoftheinfluence forgoodthattheycouldwieldintheir work.Theyhadanobligationtothe EducationDepartment,anobligation ofloyaltyandconscientiousdevotion todutyasofficersoftheDepartment. Inthatrespecttheyshouldbeanexampletootherteachers.Theywere merelydeputisingfortheparents,who expectedthatteacherswouldhavea -salutaryinfluenceontheirchildren. Ileexhortedthemtobefaithfulto therulesgoverningtheCatholicTeachers'Guild,anddoeverythingintheir powertofurtheritsinterests.Heexpressedhisappreciationofthevery valuableservicestotheGuildofRev. J.Doyle,Jesuitscholastic,andannouncedtheappointmentofFather Murphy,It L.Ph.,a,chaplain.

FEELthatnoapologyisnecessary forappearingtolabourthesubject ofjuveniledelinquency.Apartfrom thealarminggrowthofcrimeamong children,thereisagrowingirritation andconvictionofimpotenceinthose centreswheredelinquentsareusually sentforcorrectionandre-education. Thisisaverygraveposition,andit indicatesadeterminationonthepart ofthosemostvitallyinterestedto havethewholeinadequateandfutile systemrevisedandremodelled.

Therootcauseofdissatisfactionlies, asIpointedoutlastweek,intheconductoftheChildWelfareDepartment. Apartfromahopelesslyinadequate staffofofficerstohandlethematter efficiently,thereisevidenceofatotally falsesentimentalismonthepartof thoseengagedinthework.Agreat dealofvaluabletimeisbeingwasted inwarningandadmonishinglikely transgressorswhen,onaccountofpoor orhadparentalcontrol,thereisfrom theoutsetnogenuineprospectofreform.Hence,suchboysare-onstantlyconsortingwithweakandvicious types,anditwouldbeverymuchin theirowninteresttohavethemcommittedthroughtheCourtforre-educationwithoutdelay.Theessence ofre-educationofdelinquentsisthat thetrainingcentresshouldreceive themwhiletheyareyetplasticenough torespondtotreatment.

Instead,underthepresentsystem, theseboysarebeingpamperedbya misplaced"sympathy"and"understanding"overalongperiod,during whichtheirvicioustendenciesbecome deep-rootedandhabitual,untilbythe timetheyreachtheCourttheyaretoo "old"andsetinvicetobecapableof lastingreform.ThepolicyoftheofficersoftheChildWelfareDepartment isbecomingabused,andinsteadof showinggoodresultsbytheir"tolerance"withincipientdelinquents,they cometoberegardedas"soft"and easilyhoodwinked,andsoatlast broughtintocontemptinthemindof a"tough"boy.Theofficersincharge ofdelinquentinstitutionscanbearwitnesstotheprevalenceofthisyouthful cynicismandevilsophistication.

NoristhefunctioningoftheChildren'sCourtabovecriticismonsimilar grounds.Studentsoftheproblemare convincedthatagreatdealofgenuingsympathyisbeingwastedongiving boys"achance"whereinthelightof hardexperiencenorealchanceexists fortheboyoutsideatrainingcentre. Again,thosefataldelaysoccurand byfrequentlenienttreatmentdelinquentscometoloseallaweofthe Court,whilethe"sentences"areso lightastobecompletelyinadequate todeterboysfromsubsequentoffences.

Then,also,thereistheunfairpractice ofmakingtheCourtappearasanalma materandtheinstitutionsasminor gaols.Indeedtheveryterm"Institution"andthebogeyoffearandprejudicewhichsurroundsthem,should becompletelyeliminated.Boysshould beencouragedtobelievethattheyare beingsenttotrainingcentreswherereeducationwillreallyfitthemforlife, wherethereisdiscipline,butalsokindliness,wherethereisworkofasuitable vocationalnaturewhichisintendednot

merelytofillinthetermoftheir"sentence,"buttogivethemareallynew startinlife.

Notonlymustadelinquentboybe senttoatrainingcentrebeforehe istoo"old;'buthemustbeleftthere longenoughforarealeducationalprocesstobecompleted.ThefalsesympathyevidencedintheDepartment andintheCourtfollowsthedelinquent evenintothetrainingcentre.Frequently,sosoonashebeginstomanifestsignsofimprovement,hisperiod ofdetentionisreducedorheis"paroled"totakeupsomejobbeforehis re-educationisfairlyunderway.Invariablymanyoftheseboysrelapse andhavetobere-committed,but"too late"thesecondtime.Theobvious andrationalprocedureistoleaveaboy inthetrainingcentrepreciselybecause heisrespondingfavourably.Forthis isjustthecriticalperiodatwhichhis re-adjustmenttosociallifecanmost

effectivelybegin.Weredelinquents committedyoungenoughandfora sufficientlylongperiod,thetraining centreswouldhaveagenuineprospect offormingcharactersonrightlines, andofbuildinguptheirpowersof moralresistanceagainstthetimethey mustfacetheworldagain.Butat presentthereisfartoomuchinterferencewiththeMagistrate'ssentence bywell-meaningbusy-bodies,who,insteadofhelpingtheboys,gofarto blighttheirchancesirrevocably.

Anotherfactorwhichmilitatesvery seriouslyagainstthesuccessofthe trainingcentresisthetypeofpublicitywhichthecasesintheChildren's Courtreceiveinthedailyandweekendpress.Theburthenofcomplaint isnotthattheysympathisewiththe boys,butthatanykindofcaptioning orunduespaceallottedtoreporting thesecases,tendsto"glamourise"crime inthetwistedoutlookofthedelinquent.Itencourageshimtobelieve thathehasdonesomethingespecially daring,andthereforemanlyandworthyofnotice.Oneofthechieftasks ofthetrainingcentresistodiscourage theexchangeofreminiscencesofcriminalactsforthe"WhatIdone"session isaconspicuousfeatureofdelinquent conversations.Hequicklylearnsto takeaprideinrecountinghisor others'desperateadventuresandto associatecriminalactswithheroism. Thereseemstobenogoodreasonwhy theproceedingsintheChildren'sCourt shouldbereportedatall.

Vetanothercentraldifficultyinthe problemisthelackofuniformityin thegeneralmethodsofdelinquent treatment.Sometrainingcentres,unhappily,continuethepre-commitment sentimentality,andseemtobelieve thataboyisbestimprovedbyeasy conditions.Thisseemstometheclassicexampleofaboy'shanginghimselfbecauseoftoomuchrope.While theboysshouldhavedecentconditionsasregardsfood,housing,clothing andrecreation,themostvitalprincipleintheirre-educationistheneed ofkeepingthemconstantlyemployed inworkforwhichtheyarevocationally suited.Thelack,eitherofagreement onthispointorelseofthefinancial meanstoimplementit,hasgivenrise tothelunaticpositionofboysbeing abletorefusetogotoatrainingcentretowhichtheyhavebeencommittedandofbeingabletochooseanotheronthegroundsthattheyhave littleornoworktodointhelatter.

BRICKBATSFOR LOCALDELINQUENCY METHODS

Thatpositionisbadenough,butwhen thewaywardnessisindulgedbythe officersoftheChildWelfareDepartment,thematterisquiteintolerable.,Someonemustsoondecidewhetherthe officersortheboysaretoruntheDepartment,andastowhethertheDepartmentcanplayducksanddrakes withtheMagistrate'sdecisions.Small wonderthattheprincipalsofthetrainingcentresarerefusingtoacceptcertainboyswhosereformbecomesa moralimpossibilityaftertheindulgencegrantedthembyweak-kneedofficialdom.

Prayer,discussionandaction,the threegreatweaponsofthemovement, arenotlockedawayinwatertightcompartments,butworkinconjunction. Discussionmustbefollowedbyaction, andbothmustbepermeatedbyprayer. Nextweek,onthe11th.,wehave thelovelyFeastofOurLadyofLourdes.ItisoneofOurLady'sbiggest daysandshouldbeofspecialinterest totheBushiesandtheirfriends. Why?FirstlybecauseOurLadyappearedtoalittlegirl,andsecondlybecausethatlittlegirlwasapeasantor, aswewouldsayinAustralia,a "bushie."Itwasnottoanyonewise orrichorwell-known,buttothatsimple,ignorant,littlegirlthatOurLadyannouncedherselfastheImmaculate Conception.

YouallknowsomethingaboutLourdesandthewonderfuleffectsthatfolloweduponthoseapparitionsofOur Lady.Youhaveheardofthemiracleswhichhavetakenplaceatthe Grottoeversince,howthesickare cured.Butwhatweoverlookare themiraclesofgracewhichoccurat thatfamousFrenchshrine.Many thousandsofsickpeoplegothereand arenotcured,becauseitisnotalways pleasingtoGod'sHolyWillthatwe shouldbefreeoftheCross.Buteven tothosewhoarenotcuredgreatgraces arefrequentlygiven-especiallythe gracesoffaithandofresignationto theWillofGod.Sothatmanyof thesickbecomeholierfortheirvisit toOurLady'sshrine,andmoresoperhapsthaniftheyweregivenback theirhealth.

OnthisgreatfeastIthinkweshould prayespeciallythisyearforthepeople ofFrance,whoaresufferingsoin. tenselyundertheGermanconqueror.

Quiteapartfrompoliticalconsiderations,weCatholicsshouldremember thatFranceisstillthe"eldestdaughter"oftheChurch.Thatcountryhas, timeandtimeagain,receivedmarksof God'sspecialfavour.Shehasgiven theChurchsomeofitsgreatestSaints andscholars.Andwhileitistrue thatinmoderntimestheflameof faithhasnotburnedsobrightlyin Franceasinthedaysofhersplendid Catholicpast,thatisallthemorereasonwhyFranceshouldhaveagreat claimonthecharityofourprayers.

Francehasbeenspirituallysicka longtime,butneitherGodnorOur Ladyhasabandonedher,anditmay bethatshewillfindresignationand laterresurrectionattheShrineof OurLadyofLourdes.

WhenNapoleonIIIheardaboutthe youngSwede,however,hespoketoa financier,andAlfredNobelwentback toStockholmwithadraftfor100,000 francs.Thusthefoundationwaslaid fortheNobelfortune.

ToAlfredNobeltherewasnothing sinisteraboutpowerfulexplosives.His father,EmmanuelNobel,hadbeentinkeringwiththemforyears,andhad inventedanavalmineusedbyRussia intheCrimeanWar.

Alfredwasthethirdoffourbrothers, andthepuniestofthelot.Hismother foughtaconstantbattletokeephim alive.Asayoungmanhetravelled inEuropeandAmerica;andinParis hemetagirlwithwhomhefelldesperatelyinlove.Shedied.Saddenedandembittered,Alfredreturnedat attheageof21tohisfather'sfactory andtherehewentresolutelytowork -forwork,hedecided,wasallthat lifeheldforhim.

heartailments.Undercertainconditionsitwouldexplode,butnoone knewjustwhattheseconditionswere. Sometimesacontainerofthestuff wouldfalltothegroundwithathud, andnothingwouldhappen;sometimes asmalljoltwouldcauseashattering explosion.Alfredandhisfatherset outtotamenitroglycerin.

GraduallyAlfredtooktheleadin theexperiments,andarrivedatthe theorythattheonlysurewayofexplodingthesoupishliquidwastoconfineitinastoutcontainerandsetit offwithasharpprimaryexplosion,He evolvedtheblastingcap-aninvention stillthebasisofthewholenitroglycerinanddynamiteindustry.

AftersecuringLouisNapoleon'shelp, Alfredandhisfatherwenthopefullyto work,butnitroglycerinstillwouldnot behave.InMay,1864,anexplosion killedtheyoungestson,Emil,and fourworkmen.OldEmmanuelwas prostrated,andneverrecovered.

TheNobelshadnopermittowork withexplosives,andtheauthorities crackeddown.Indomitably,Alfred kepton.Hemovedhisplanttoa bargemooredinalake.Chemist,manufacturer,bookkeeperanddemonstrator allinone,hehardlytooktimetoeat, andsucceededinruininghisdigestion forlife.Hewouldshowth3world, hesaid,thathisblastingoilwassafe.

Laterheincludedtheprizesforscience andliterature.Heintendedthese awards,notascrownsofsuccess,butas lifebeltsforsinkinggeniuses.Yetthe termsofhisloosely-drawnwillmadeit impossiblefortheawardcommitteesto considerthefinancialstatusoftherecipients.

NobelturnedhisbackonParis whentheFrenchgovernment,alarmed becausehehadsoldhissmokelesspowdertoItaly,placedrestrictionsupon hiswork.Helivedhisremainingdays inausteresolitudeatSanRemo,Italy. WhenhisbrotherLudwig,whohad madeafortuneinoil,died,theFrench papersthoughtitwasAlfred:andhe hadthepeculiarsatisfactionofreading hisownobituaries.Theywerenot complimentary.

AtSanRemohespentmostofhis timeworkingonsyntheticrubberand artificialsilk.Hisheartbeganto giveout,andhewenttospecialists. Helaughedwhentheyprescribed Heboughtasphygmograph,watchedthelinewhichshowed theirregularityofhispulse,andpointedouttofriendsthedegreeofvariationthatwouldkillhim.OnDecember10,1896,hedied.

BeforehisdeathNobelhadabandon edtheideathatmorepowerfulkilling agentswouldfrightenthenationsinto peace.HepinnedhisfaithonsomethingveryliketheLeagueofNations.

Atfirst,hedidnotintendtofound aperpetualpeaceprize.Hesuggested thatitbediscontinuedattheendof 30years,forhebelievedthatifinternationalpeacewerenotassuredby then,theworldwouldrelapseintobarbarism.Hesaidthatin1893. It wasjust30yearslaterthatanAustrian house-painterleda"putsch"inMunich.

Superstitionhasfounditswayinto theAustralianfightingservices,some ofwhosemembersarecarryingin theirwalletscopiesofaprayer,writtenbyhandintheformofacross, withtheassurancethatthisprayer was"foundinthetombofOurLord JesusChristintheyear803."

Evidentlythesamehumbughas founditswayamongtheforcesin

India,anditwouldbewellifthefollowingauthoritativeeditorialcommentsonitfrom"TheExaminer," Bombay,editedbytheJesuitFathers, werecirculatedassoundadviceamong themenintheAustralianandU.S. fightingforces.

"TheExaminer"saysthataprinted copyoftheprayerwassentinbya militarychaplain,whosaidthatitwas claimedthat"thedailyrecitalofthis prayerwillpreservefromsuddendeath bydrowingorpoison,andincertain

circumstancesthemereapplicationof thepaperbearingthisprayerwillproducecertainfavourableeffects,while hethatwilllaughatitshallsuffer.' Thechaplainadded:"Ifindthispatheticnonsenseisbeingsedulously circulatedamongtheAnglo-Indians andEnglish-readingIndianChristians intheArmy."

Thewriterofthecommentsin"The Examiner"saidthathehadbeenaskedbyanIndianCatholicsoldierin hospitaltogethimtheprayer"inthe formofacross.''

"EveryAUTHORISEDCatholic prayer,'says"TheExaminer,""will eitherbeinaproperlyauthorisedCatholicprayerbook,or,ifprintedona leaflet,willbeartheImprimaturand nameofsomeCatholicauthority.As regardsotherprayersonemaycome across,orwhichmaybegiventoone byafriend,Catholicsshouldbevery

muchontheirguard.Oneabsolutely suresignthattheseareBADprayers, iswhentheyareaccompaniedbyabsolutepromisesofmaterialbenefits andthreats.Thisisthecase,forexample,withchain-prayers.
