IfyourChurchisestablishedbyGod, andifChristisreallypresentinthe TabernaclesofyourChurches,which havebeendesecratedbytheinvaders,whydoesnotGodstrikethem dead,insteadofallowingthemto trampleHimunderfoot?
Inthefirstplace,yourquestionis basedonamisunderstandingofthe CatholicdoctrineoftheRealPresence. ChristisreallypresentintheHoly Eucharist,notonlyasGodbutalsoas man.HeispresentinallthemajestyofHisDivinity,inallthesplendourofHisglorifiedHumanity,but bothDivinityandHumanityarehiddenundertheappearancesofbread. Onceagaintheresultsoftherecentschoolexaminationshave surpassedthoseofotheryears.Onceagainourschoolslave beenuniquelysuccessful,notonlywithregardtothescholarships obtained,butin,theresultsofallschoolsgenerallytakeninthe aggregate.Handicappedastheywereintheearlymonthsthrough thenumbersevacuated,sodepletingthemetropolitanschoolsand crowdingthecountryschools,neverthelessthevariousreligious congregationsrosemagnificentlytotheoccasion,and,asinpreviousyears,haveachievedresultswhichcompletelyvindicatethe claimthatourCatholicschoolsmorethanholdtheirowninthe fieldofeducation.ThedebtweowetotheBrothersandSisters 3ftheteachingcongregationsisonewemaynotmeasure,fornot onlydotheyaccomplishallthatcouldbeexpectedoftheminthe sphereofseculareducation,butmustanddo,inaddition,inculcatetheprinciplesandpracticeofthespirituallife-theygiveour childrenthatuponwhichalltrueeducationisfounded,andwhich issadlylackinginthenationalsystemofseculareducation.-' childwithoutmoraltraining,withallbutthevaguestknowledge ofChristandthesynthesisofChristiandoctrines,islittleelsethan amoreorlesswell-readanimal.Thebreakdownofmorality amongtheyoungmenandwomenofAustraliato-daymaybeplacedfairlyandsquarelyontheshouldersofthose"enlightened" statesmenwhointroducedthefree-secular-and-compulsorysystem intothecountrynotsoverylongago.Thetreacherousthing theydidhasquicklyreapeditsownreward,andtheteachingcongregationshavebeenallalongthesalvationofourCatholicyouth.
Yes,thedebtweowethemisonewecannotmeasure,andcannotrepay.Itmustbesomerewardforthem,however,tosee intheresultsthatwehavebeenpublishinghowwellthechildren haverespondedtotheirtireless,unselfishefforts,andtoknowthat theparentsinparticular,andtheCatholiccommunityingeneral, deeplyappreciatetheheroicsacrificetheyaremakingthatbefore allelse,ouryouthmaycome'toknowtheonetrueGodandJesus ChristwhomHehassent."Whatistoberegrettedisthatthe nationatlargerefusestorecognisethemagnitudeoftheservice theyarerenderingtheircountry,andinmanycases,thecountry oftheiradoption.Theresultsofthesepublicexaminationsyear afteryearareacompletejustificationoftheCatholicclaimsfor thatrecognitionandforsimplejusticeinthedistributionofpublic revenueforeducationalpurposes.Yetthoseclaimsarerejected, ;timeandagain,andoftenviciously.Thesectarian.issueisinvariablyraised,unreasoningandvigorousoppositionisimmediately organised.andtherealissueiscloudedinthehueandcry. Throughitallandafter,theCatholicschoolsgoon.Quietl: hefoically,thesemagnificentmenandwomenofourreligiouscongregationscontinuewithoutrecognition.withoutthanks,without anyearthlyreward,labouring-inoneofthemostdifficultandtryingofallvocations,fortheirGod,theirstudents,andtheircountry.
Anotheryearofstudiesissoontocommence,withthehappy auguryofthesesuccessesof'42.Maytheybeexcelledyetagain inthetermsahead.Eachyearseesthestudentrollsincrease. eventhoughschoolsarecontinuallybeingbuiltandextending,or wereuntiltheclaimsofaunitedwar-effortbroughtthatactivity t:mporarilytoastandstill.ButthegreatsystemofCatholic educationthathasbeenbuiltupatsuchtremendouscostherein Australiainthistwentiethcentury,couldneverhavebecomethe consolingrealityitis.wereitnotforthesacrificessogladlyborne bytheBrothersandSistersofourschools.Theyarethefoundationuponwhichitrests,theyarethesecretofitssuccess,andmay wejoinincongratulatingthemontheachievementsofthepast twelvemonthsinparticular.andexpressthehopethattheirwork intheyearaheadwillbeassingularlyblessedbytheOnewhom ;theyservesodevotedlyandsowell.

ArchbishopSimondsintheSeeof Hobart.Thenewlycreatedprelate, whoisforty-twoyearsofage,wasborn inMinmi,NewSouthWales.He studiedatSpringwoodandManlybeforegoingtoRome,wherehereceived hisdoctorateandwasordained.On hisreturnDr.Tweedywasassistant priestatNferewether,inMaitland forfouryears,andin1931wasappointedprivateanddiocesansecretary totheBishopofMaitland,Dr.Gleeson.Hewassubsequentlyappointed AdministratorofWestMaitlandand diocesanconsultor.Forfiveyears Dr.Tweedywasalsoexaminerforthe dioceseinChristiandoctrine.In1938, hewasorganisingsecretaryoftheme NewcastleRegionalEucharisticCongress,andforsometimepasthascapablyfilledtheofficeofDiocesanDirectorofCatholicAction.Hehasalways takenavigorouspartinpromotingthe studyofsocialjustice,especiallyin theminingandindustrialdistricts aboutNewcastle.Aspresidentof CUSA(correspondingtotheC.W.O. inthisState)hehasbeenresponsible fortheerectionofmanyhutsforthey, fightingservicesincampsandtowns throughoutthediocese.Dr.Tweedy hasalsowonareputationasaspeaker.

Theprovincesofthewestwere,until quiterecently,remoteandinaccessible exceptbytheexpenditureofmuch timeintravel:andtheendurance,in mostcases,ofgreathardship.These provinceswereregardedbymostof thedwellersintheeastasthefascinatinghomeofvaluablemedicinalherbs, beautifulandrareflowers,giantvaluablemedicinalherbs,giantpandasand otheranimals,aswellasprecious metals.
There,itwasknown,livedstrange tribesmenwhoinhabitedmajestic mountainswhichwerethesourceofour principalgreatrivers,butallfartoo difficultofaccessevertohereached byeasterninhabitants.
UptothetimeofthefallofNanking,ourpeopleasawholepaidlittle attentiontothefar-flungprovincesof thewest.Now,however,tensofthousandsofourpeople-amongwhomare leadersofindustriesandinstitutionsof learning,withtheirstaffsandstudents --havemovedin,comingonsteamers, motorcars,trucks,oronfoot.

Thearticle,"ACommunistSpeaks," byDr.Rumble,inyourissueofJanuary14,isaveritablemasterpieceinthe summingupofthistreacherousdoctrine.EveryonewhohastheinterestsofChristianityatheart(beheCatholicornon-Catholic)andwhohasnot yetstudiedtheRussiansysteminall itsaspects,woulddowelltoreadand digestthearticlereferredto."The Record-istobecongratulatedonits far-seeingpolicyintakingupthecudgelslonehandedtocombatthesenoisy egotistswhohavetheeffronteryto preachandimplythatthosewhodon't seeeyetoeyewiththemareplaying theFascistgame-are,inotherwords, "pro-fascist."

Itisratherdifficulttogivepractical adviceonthismatter,butwherever youstartaGroupbest.rethatyou haveatleastsixorsevenmenwhoare preparedtomakeaqysacrificeatallin theinterestsofCatholicAction.They mustbepreparedtofaceanydifficulty withconfidence,and,ofcourse,there arealwaysplenty.

ImpressuponmembersofGroups thattheymustnotexpectimmediate results,which,unfortunately,many farmersdo.
Theremustbearevolutionofsocial thoughtandwewillallhavetochange ouroutlooktorurallife.Themodern ideaofourlifemustchange.Farmers mustnotregardthelifeontheland fromthe"getrichquick"pointof view.Theymustregarditastheideal ,:atholicwayoflifeforalayman.
WhenwefirststartedourGroup,all wasnotplainsailingbyanymeans.We hadourmeetingsintheChurchtwicea month,'becausethiswasthemostconvenientplace,sincewedonotlive closetogether,althoughthisareais closelysettled.TheCatholicsrepresentaminority.About30yearsago theywereinthemajoritybutsold theirlandtoretire.
Thewomen,aswellasthemen,attendedourfirstmeetingsandtookpart inthediscussions.Wefoundthisan excellentideaaswealwayshadagood numberpresent.Ifthemanofthe housewasunabletocome,hiswifeor sonsanddaughterswerethere,andin thiswayeachmemberwasabletokeep
intouchwiththeaffairsoftheMoveinent.NowwehaveaseparateWomen'sGroup,whichisfunctioningwell, owingtothegoodinsighttheyreceived throughbeingpresentatthemen's meetings.
WeformedourMen'sGroupabout 18monthsagowith9members,but theyweregoodones.Sixmonthsafter westartedwehadaco-operativepurchaseoftea.Itrepresentedasaving ofsixpenceperlb.toeachmember,by getting2001bs.fromanimporter.It washighlysuccessfulandresultedin asavingofS5.Thisawokeconsiderableinterestinthosewhowerenonmembers,andtheywereabletosee thatsomethingcouldbedoneinthis way,inwhichallcouldbenefitina materialway.Thiswasdonebefore tearationingcamein,butnowweare endeavouringtomakeaco-operative purchaseofbindertwine.Atany rate,wefinishedtheyearwithamembershipof23intheMen'sGroupand almosteveryfamilyinthedistrict joined.
Youcanimpressuponyourmembers thatCo-operationisthekeynoteof success.Co-operativebuyingand workingtogethertohelponeancrtner willsavetimeandmoneytoallwho adoptthismethod,butmostimportant ofallitwillbringbacktothepeople thespiritofChristiancharity,which appearstohavediedoutinalotof places.
AtyourGroupmeetingsalways,if possible,selectsomesubjectappertainingtotheLifeontheLand,whichwill provokediscussion.Talkstimulates thoughtandthatiswhatisneeded. Peopleneedtobeawakenedtothe perilousstateofthingsandtopool theirideasintheformationofasolutionwhichwillremovethefettersfrom themanonthelandandenablehim tolivearealCatholiclife.Itisalso agoodplantogetamanfromanother parttogiveanaddressonsomesubjectwhichwillbeofinteresttofarmers.
Asregardsthewaysandmethodsof farming,stresstheIndependentFarm asaworthwhileobjective.Although ourGrouphasbeenfunctioningfor'18 months,itisonlynowthatsomeare beginningtorealisethetremendous advantagesofIndependentFarming.

TheChestertonof'Orthodoxy, sometenyearsbeforehisconversion, wasbasicallythesamethinking-machineastheChestertonof"TheEverlastingMan."TheessentialCatholic castofhismindatthattimemade hisdefenceoforthodoxyaword-forworddefenceofCatholicism.Buthe knewthatnoamountofrational thinkingorbrilliantdefenceofCatholicismwouldbargainHeavenout ofSaintPeter.Somethingmorewas needed.Unlesshehadthevisaof Faith,hejustdidnotgetin.Hence heprayedandwaiteduntil,fortunatelyforhim,themysteriousGodofgrace lookedkindlyuponhimandbestowed thegiftofFaith.
Fortunateitwasforus,too,since Faith,alongwithjustification.often bringsothercharismaticgiftsthatare secondarybuthighlydesirablebecauseotherwiseunobtainable.For Chestertonthemostwonderfulof thesewasaveryearnestdevotionto OurLadythatindicatedhiscomplete mentalandemotionalturnovertothe trueFaith.
HisearlyattitudetowardOurLady hadbeenatleasttolerant,forheconfessesthathecouldnotatanystage ofhisopinionsimaginethereasonsfor theProtestantoppositiontoher.That thisoppositionwasquiteunreasonable theveryreasonableChestertoneasily recognised.Itwasnotuntilafterhis conversion,however,thatthesigns ofthisoppositiongoadedhinttofull fury.Thisangerreachedaclimaxand betrayedhimintoapossibleimprudence whenayoungProtestant,probably withunwittingdisrespect,wrotethat "OurLadyhasbecomethepatronof aparty(Catholicism),whereasChrist wasneverapartyleader."Ignoring theshoddyreasoningforonce,Chesterton'sindignationexplodesand againstthisderogationofOurLadyhe lashesoutinatoweringrage:

Chestertonwouldhavebeenasgauche withfraillyricismasJohnPhilip SousacomposingthescoreforaRombergoperetta.Why,hecouldnot writealovepoemtohiswifewithout thunderingaboutthesunandthe stars,angels,Hell,theDayofJudgmentandthegloryofthefaceofGod!
Itproves,then,theuttersingularity ofhisdevotiontotheMotherofGod thathisloveforhercouldforcehim outofhisnaturalpoeticvein.In probablytheonlyexampleofChestertonbeinggracefulandtender,weare givenaChristmashymnthatneeds onlyamelodyequaltoitsemotional sweetnesstoplaceitbeside"Silent Night"inthetreasuryoftheworld's Christmasmusic.Weshouldnotbe prejudicedagainstitbecauseitwas notwrittenbeforethefifteenthcentury;thealbumofChristmasmusic stillcontainsmanyblankpages.I submitforsomegiftedcomposera poemwhoseimmortalsimplicityisevidentevenfromoneofitsstanzas:
