The immoral atmosphere pervading the Press and the theatre as well as factories and offices, and the part which Catholics should take in the spiritual renaissance of mankind were discussed by the Holy Father when he received in audience and gave a long address to representatives of Italian Catholic Action recently. The Holy Father spoke of the harmful effect on young workers of loose talking and loose living in factories and offices which could become hateful to those who work there, and His Holiness urged workers to get together to persuade those in authority to use the force of law against immorality in the Press and the theatre.

In the present painful upheaval of mankind, the Pope said, there is at stake nothing less than the problem of restoring and re-organising all things in Christ. This work is the re-establishment of the Kingdom of God, founded by Christ. "To -day the whole world feels the need of a re -birth of order. Look at the statesmen. What is their ambition? Is it not to secure the coma mon good in an atmosphere of temporal order, in harmony with the eternal and supernatural order? Other professions give great influence in the social sphere, such as the law and the civil service. But even in menial employment and among unskilled workers there can be plenty of scope for the exercise of the apostolate. rruption, becoming hateful to those who work there though they are not courageous enough to say so. The Holy Father made a reference to "unscrupulous editors" in speaking of immoral tendencies in the Press and the theatre "even in these days of exceptional gravity." He spoke of the images of vice which remain indelibly fixed on the minds of children when they are permitted to see harmful pictures. But human nature is not universally Human depraved, His Holiness said. nature is essentially good. The small minority excepted, people in general do not want the productions that are almost forced on them-and the Pope urged people to get together to persuade the civil authority to use the force of the law against such persons and against such practices.

Within your own circles you can help the apostolate. Within the family you have much to do for God by your suggestions and ex-

"There is the apostolate of holiness as well as the apostolate of the word; the apostolate of example as well as the apostolate of action." The Holy Father spoke strongly on the painful effects of human respect in factories and offices where loose talking, loose living and freedom of action that make one tremble have become so prevalent. What would be the effect on the young workers if mature men are not strong enough to put such things down? They are like children afraid of the dark. Such places could become sources of

Rome It has been reported that the Holy

Father has refused to leave Rome, and explaining the declaration a spokesman at the Holy See said: "Diplomats approached the Pope, and suggested that he should go to his country estate of Castel Gandolfo, in view of the danger of remaining in Rome under present conditions. The Pope refused, and said: 'I have ordered all my Bishops to remain at their posts, as good shepherds among their flocks in times of national distress.' "
