Thisyearit'sdifferent-particularly inEngland-ratherterriblydifferentin manyways.Butevenbombsand gunscanlightourwaybacktothe Baby throughsufferingwecanrediscovertheBabyWhocametosuffer forusandwithus.Iftherehadn't beenaBabyintheCrib,thisChristmaswouldbeofallChristmasesthe mostsad butbecauseHeisthere, poor,indanger,inpoverty,wecan, forperhapstheveryfirsttime,really spendChristmaswithHim,notjust withourpleasures,ourself-indulgenc:!, ourblindnesstoallthatChristmas reallymeans.

Infact,theangelstoodbythem; "cameuponthem,"saystheJacobean Bible,perhapsrightly,fortheGreek wordisalwaysusedbySt.Lukeof unexpectedinterruptions.Douai,however,isasaferguidewhenyouwant tounderstandthemeaningoftheangelicannouncement.Thegoodtidings ofgreatjoywerenot-explicitly-for allpeople,butforallthepeople;that oftheJews,commonlyasopposedto theGentiles.And,asweknow,the celestialhymndidnotpromisepeace onearth,good-willtomenbutpeace onearthtomenofgood-will-probably,thatis,tothemenGodapprovesof. Thecharacteristicfeatureofthe feastofChristmasintheRomanrite isthecustomofthethreeMasses,one atmidnight,thenextatdawn,the thirdinbroaddaylight.
Howisthistripleofferingofthe HolySacrificeexplained?
LiturgistsofthelaterMiddleAges, insteadofexploringthefieldofarchaeology,confinedtheirattentionsolely toasceticandmysticalreasonsforthis Romantriplication.Butallthese mysticalmeanings,whilegoodin themselvesandwellcalculatedtofosterpiety,arewhollyirrelevanttothe earlyoriginofthistriplication,which wasnotaltogetherunknowninRome, fortheFeastoftheApostlesPeterand Panlalsoenjoyedtheprivilegesof threeMasses;andthatoftheseven sonsofSt.Felicitasincludedfour.

St.Thomasgivesanothermysticinterpretation.AccordingtotheAngelicDoctor,thethreeMassesrecallthe threeNativitiesoftheSonofGodtheeternalone,whichhasitssymbol intheMidnightMassbecauseitisconcealedfromus:thespiritualone,that ofJesustakinglifeinus"Tanquam luciferincordibusnostris"(asalightbearerinourhearts),whichiswell symbolisedbytheMassatdawn,and

TheoriginofthethreeMassesat Christmasmaybemoresimplyexplained.Thecustomwasalreadyestablishedattheendofthesixthcentury,andSt.Gregorymentionsthat factinoneofhishomilies.
Thisishowitwasintroduced.At thebeginningofthefifthcenturythere wasonlyoneMassonChristmasDay; itwascelebratedbythePopeatbroad daylightinSt.Peter's.
TheMidnightMassattheBasilicaof St.MaryMajorisoflaterdateand needsamoredetailedexplanation.
OnChristmasDayA.D.431,Pope Celestinereceivedtheletterswhichin-

AsatJerusalem,soalsoatRomeit wasfittingtoreproduceinliturgical formthesceneofthememorablenight inBethlehem.especiallyasPopeSixtusIIIhadhaderectedinSt.Mary MajoraRomanrepresentationofthe originalCribatBethlehem.Thenonly didthecustomofMidnightMassoriginateinRomeanditwas,andisstill, celebratedatSt.MaryMajorinthe chapeloftheCrib.

ThehourofdawnatwhichthisStation(Mass)wascelebratedhadoriginallynomysticalmeaningconnectingitwiththebirthofOurSaviour, suchasmediaevalliturgistsafterwards sawinit.SincetheSolemnMassat St.Peter'swasfixedforthehourof Terce,onlytheearliestmoaninghour remainedavailablefortheStation MassatSt.Anastasia's.
ThisMass,celebratedatdawn,in theChurchofSt.Anastasia,hadorigin allynothingwhatevertodowiththe FeastoftheNativity.Itwasforthe benefitoftheByzantinecolonyin Rome,anxioustocelebratethefeast dayoftheirsaint,forhername,althoughshewasbornatthefootofthe Palatine,isintheGreekCalendarof Saints.
WiththedeclineoftheByzantine Empire,thecultofSt.Anastasiaalso waned.TheStationindeedsurvived, thoughitnownolongerrepresented theanniversaryofthesaint'smartyrdom,asatfirst,butintroducedasecondMassatdawnincommemoration ofOurLord'sbirthasMan,witha commemorativecollectforSt.Anastasia.Thiscommemorationisstill saidinthisMass.

Atlonglasttherewas"peaceonearth" -thepeacearisingfromthereconciliationofthedistantheavensandthe waitingearth,ofeternityandtime,of Godandman.Thesoulcouldrest nowontheaccomplishedfact.The irrevocableThinghadhappenedand itcouldnotbecancelled.Allthrough thelaterscriptures,chroniclingthis movement,runsthesenseofrelief,of joyandoftriumph.ItisintheDay thatthendawnedwearenowliving.

Aneventofthatkindonceoccurring cannotbeundone.Itchangesthe courseofhistoryandentersintothe warpandwoofofcivilisation.The thingsthathavehappenedintimecontributeaccumulativelytothepresent constitutionofhumannature.Memoryissomethingmorethanthedim reflectionofthepast;itisourreaction tothepresentactivityofthepastin thepresent.Wearethesummaries ofthegenerationswhichprecededus. Theyliveinourblood.Theirvoices, inthenight-watcheswhenthedinof contemporarytrafficissilenced,make themselvesheardinthesoulsofthose nowliving.Nothingcanbethesame, since,allthatwhileago,Godcame intheflesh.Hehaschangedthevery textureofourthought.Itisthefallacyofneo-paganismtothinkitcan recapturethemoodofancientGreece andRome.Itisasfoolishanotion astoimaginethatcivilisedman,by "goingnative,"canenjoytheunsophisticatedinnocenceofthesavage.The thingisimpossible.Itwouldundo history.Andthatisbeyondthewit anddeviceofman.Thingsonce donearedoneforever.
Soirrevocableisthepastandsoimmanentinthepresentthat,ifitcannotrevealitselfasacontinuinggood, itwillmanifestitselfasincreasingevil. Thegreaterthegood,thegreaterthe possibilityofevil.UntilGodassum edahumanform,thesinofDeicide wasimpossible.Thestoutertherock thatjutsouttosea,thefiercerwillbe theseethingofthewatersflungagainst it.ThecomingofGodintotheworld evokedallthedevilryofHell.And thisdiabolismisitselfawitnessto theDivinePresenceagainstwhichit rages.
Thatistheanswertothosewhosee inthepresentstateofhumanaffairsa denialofourFaith.Menwouldnot
besobaditGodwasnotsogood. Thisgenerationwouldnothavebeen wroughtuptosuchafuryofhatred wereitnotforthepresenceinour midstofIncarnateLove.

TEEIRREVOCABLEVICTORY.
Butthestoryofwhichwearecommemoratingthebeginningendedona noteofdecisiveandfinaltriumph.And thatfactalsomustbeinsomeway permanentlyregisteredinthecontemporaryscene.Thestarthatshone overBethlehem,havingbeenoncelit, cannotbeputout.Where,'then,are wetolookforit?Whereamongst usto-dayistobefoundtheconcrete evidencethatGod,cominginour flesh,conqueredsinanddeath?Where istobeseentheCausewhichhasprovokedthevolcaniceruptionofevil thatisnowdelugingtheearthwith itsfloodofmoltenhatred,cruelty,lust ofpowerandDeicidalfury?'
Noadequateexplanationofthat furycanbegivenunlesswerealise thattheIncarnation,havinghappened, continuesasapermanentfactoperativeinhistory.NeithertheResurrectionnortheAscensioncancelledit.He Whoappearedinaphysicalbodyper-

Thereisapttocomeuponusat timesawearinessthatwouldinduce ustobelievethatourtaskiscomplete andthatwecannowcontentourselves withmaintainingastaticimmobility. Wearelikethosemenwhoretirefrom activelifetospendtheremainderof theirdaysintrivialdoingsandin "fightingtheirbattleso'eragain."
ItisagainstthatmoodthatChristmasisaprotest.Itrecallsustothe contemplationoftheEternalSonstandingonthethresholdofacareerwhich wastoturntheworldupsidedown.BecauseitwasHisFather'swillandbecauseitwouldenableHimtoliftthe burdenfromcountlesshearts,Christ enjoyedbecomingMan.Onemust thinkofHimasenteringuponHistask withalltheexultationofyouthlaunchedupontheworld.Wecanpicture theChildinMary'sarmsasradiating thesplendourofOnetakingupcostly butcongeniallabours.Thiswasthe initiationofanenterprise,contemplatedfrometernity,afterHisOwnheart andindeepestaccordwiththewisdomofHisomniscientmind.No wonderthat,astheheavenslooked downuponHim,theycaughtthespirit ofthisembarkationupontheseasof timeandshatteredthesilenceofthe nightwithpaeansofpraise.

ItisthatcontinuedPresence,letit berepeated,whichhasstirredupthe depthsofHell.TheChurchisthe supremeirritantinhistory.Itwill nederallowmentoremainneutral withregardtoit.-Soonerorlater, thoughtheydeludethemselvesby adoptinganattitudeofagnosticindifference,theymustproclaimthemselvesfororagainst.Mortalsconstitute ajurywhichislockedinuntilitrendersitsverdict.Allitssquirmingand evasionareinvain.GodasrepresentedbyHisChurchisnononentity whichcanbeignored.Thatisthe heresywhichwemisnametolerance. Thepersecutorsknowbetter.They paytheChurchthecomplimentof saying,ineffect,thatitandtheycannotexisttogetherinthesameworld; oneortheothermustgo."Thedevils believeandtremble."

Andhowdowegiveourheartsto God?Itisnotsimplybyasymbolicofferingthatwemakethegift toGod,butbyadefiniteactofthe will,byasurrenderofsomething whichmaypossiblycostusagreat deal.Wemust,ineffect,excludefrom ourheartsallthatisnotinconformitywiththeLoveofGod.
Now,theLoveofGodisnotsomethingthatismerelysentimental,merelyathingofaffections.ChristOur SaviourHimselfdeterminedtheproof ofoureffectiveLoveofGod,andinso
