Howisthistripleofferingofthe HolySacrificeexplained?
LiturgistsofthelaterMiddleAges, insteadofexploringthefieldofarchaeology,confinedtheirattentionsolely toasceticandmysticalreasonsforthis Romantriplication.Butallthese mysticalmeanings,whilegoodin themselvesandwellcalculatedtofosterpiety,arewhollyirrelevanttothe earlyoriginofthistriplication,which wasnotaltogetherunknowninRome, fortheFeastoftheApostlesPeterand Panlalsoenjoyedtheprivilegesof threeMasses;andthatoftheseven sonsofSt.Felicitasincludedfour.
AccordingtotheLiturgists,theMidnightMasscommemoratestheeternal birthoftheWordofGodamidthe magnificenceofHisFathe.r'sglory:the MassatdawncelebratesHisappearanceintime,inthehumanityofthe flesh;andthethirdMasssymbolises Christ'sfinalcomingattheendofthe worldtojudgethelivingandthedead.
St.Thomasgivesanothermysticinterpretation.AccordingtotheAngelicDoctor,thethreeMassesrecallthe threeNativitiesoftheSonofGodtheeternalone,whichhasitssymbol intheMidnightMassbecauseitisconcealedfromus:thespiritualone,that ofJesustakinglifeinus"Tanquam luciferincordibusnostris"(asalightbearerinourhearts),whichiswell symbolisedbytheMassatdawn,and
thetemporalone,accordingtothe flesh,theonlyonevisible,whichis symbolisedbytheMassatmidday.
TheoriginofthethreeMassesat Christmasmaybemoresimplyexplained.Thecustomwasalreadyestablishedattheendofthesixthcentury,andSt.Gregorymentionsthat factinoneofhishomilies.
Thisishowitwasintroduced.At thebeginningofthefifthcenturythere wasonlyoneMassonChristmasDay; itwascelebratedbythePopeatbroad daylightinSt.Peter's.
