Inaninterviewwithaspecialrepresentativeof"TheCatholicWeekly,"he saidthathehopedhewouldalsohave theprayersofCatholics,thathemight dischargehisnewandheavyresponsibilitiesinamannerpleasingtoAlmightyGod.

ThefirstmessageHisGracereceived afterhisappointmentwasatelegram fromArchbishopMannixassuringhim ofawarmwelcomefromhimself,the clergyandthefaithfulofMelbourne.

"Iwillbeveryhappy,"saidArchbishopSimonds,"toassisttheArchbishop ofMelbourneineverypossiblewayto beartheheavyburdenwhichtheadministrationoftheArchdioceseof Melbournehasimposedonhisshouldersfor30years.

NewshasnowbeenreceivedthatEnsignDavishasbeenpromotedtothe rankofLieutenant,andhasbeen awardedtheDistinguishedFlying CrossbytheU.S.A.Navy.Theaward wasmadeforskilfulhandlingofhis patrolbomber,whichenabledhiscrew toshootdownanattackingJapanese fighter.Lieut.Davishassomodestly referredtohisexploitsthathisfamily inIndianabelievedhewasdoing nothingmorethan"routineflying." OntheeveningofSeptember30, 1897,alittletimeaftertheringingof theAngelusbell,underthehumble roofoftheCarmelofLisieux,there passedfromthislifetoGodthesoul ofayoungnunbythenameofTeresa Martin.Thelastwordsutteredbyher dyinglipswere:"MyGod,Ilove Thee"-andherlastlookuponthis earthwasdirectedtowardsthestatue o:God'sholyMother.

Twenty-eightyearsafterwardsher namewasraisedtothehighesthonoursoftheChurch,foronMay17,in theyear1925,Teresawascanonised.On thatdayshebecameSaintTeresa,but alwaysshewillbetoeveryCatholic heartwhatsheherselfpreferredtobe called-"TheLittleFlower:

ThisLittleFlowercamefromoneof themostcharmingandvirtuousfamiliesinthewholeofFrance;nay,itmay besaid,thatinthehistoryofthe ChurchtheMartinfamilyrankshigh inthelistofthoseChristianfamilies whichhavebeenfortheChurch,nurseriesofsaints.

Everymorningthefatherand motherofTeresawereatMassand HolyCommunion,ThedaysofpenanceoftheChurchwerezealouslyobservedintheirhousehold:Though roundabouttheirhomeonSundaypeopleworkedunnecessarilyandmissed Mass.Theyneverdid:Andagreat dealoftheirSundaywasoftengiven tothereadingofgoodandholybooks. Prayersinthemorningandinthe eveningweresaidalltogether.The Martinswerecomfortableasfaras earthlygoodswent,butintheirhome nobodywasextravagantorspoilt. Moneywasgivenbythemtothe Church,tothePropagationofthe Faith,andtoallcharitablecauses,especiallytothepoor.Andtheexcellentparentsofthesechildren,oneof whomwasTeresa,oftenspoketotheir

childreninthisway:"Thatheartcan neverbehappywhichseeksanything hutGod.-Wearenotsurprisedto learnthatatleastonememberofsuch afamilybecameacanonisedsaint,and thatherseveralsistershaverivalled herinsanctityofthehighestorder.

YetthefamilycircleofTeresahad timeforitsinnocentjoyandlaughter. Teresaherselftellsusofherwalkswith herfatherandhowtheywouldvisit OurBlessedLordontheway.Then thegloriouswalksinthefieldsinthe country,thefishingexpeditionswhen Teresawithherlittlefishingrodtried, thoughunsuccessfully,tocatchsome fish,Howtheplayingofthemilitary bandattractedherattention,andhow allthebeautiesofnatureweremusic tohersoul.

Thenathomeherlessons,herbooks, herdolls,hergamesofdraughts;how allveryhumanandyetallsanctified bytheloveofGodandprayer.

Asachildshewasintelligentand veryopeninhercharacter,butextremelyhead-strongandsensitive,and couldbeverystubbornattimes,Teresaalsowasratherbrightandgayin herdispositionstillsorrowenteredher younglifeandmadeherinureserious andthoughtful;butTeresaneverlost herstrengthofcharacter.

Manylessonsmaybelearntfromher life,butwemustbecontenthereto learnfromherathreefoldlesson:Firstly,herspiritofunselfishness;secondly,herspiritofprayer;thirdly,her tenderdevotiontoOurBlessedLady.

HerSpiritofUnselfishness.

Teresabecameasaintnotbecause shehadnofaults,butbecauseshe strovetocorrectthem.Evenasa littlegirltheSaintusedherstrongwill againstherself,andsethersoultosacrificeseveninthedaysofherchildhood,AndGodgavethismerechild manyanopportunitytosacrificeherselfforHissake.Allloveisproved bysacrifice,AllforGodandour neighbourandnothingforourselvesis thereallifeofanunselfishsoul:andif evertherewasanunselfishsoulitwas Teresa's.Onecannotcomeaway fromthereadingofherlifewithout beingconvincedofthis:"Thereisa happylife-foritwasspentindoing God'swillinallthings,""Fromthe timeIwasthreeyearsold,"shecould sayofherself,"Ihaveneverrefused anythingtoGod,"

Godtookherdearmotherfromher whenTeresawasamerechild.Then whenPaulinewastakingtheplaceof amotherinheryounglife,Godtook PaulineawaytoCarmel.Then,when leftaloneafterthesetwohardand heartbeltpartings,GodsentHisLittle Flowerasickness,whichmadeher youngheartsorrowfulevenuntodeath. Buttheyoungsoulofthissmallgirl wasequaltosuchappallingsacrifices: Fromtheageoffourteensufferingnow wassodeartoher,itwasajoy-not becauseofsufferinginitself,butbecauseitgavejoytoGod,itbought forHimthesoulsofmen.Sheprayedforanabandonedcriminalwhohad refusedallthesacraments.Teresa askedforhisconversionevenasheput hisfootonthescaffold-andherprayerwasansweredbecauseherprayer wasaccompaniedbytheofferingof suffering.

SpiritofPrayer, Teresaprayedasaninfant,asa child,asayounggirl,asanoviceinthe beginningofherreligiouslife,andas aprofessedreligious.Teresaprayed inherhome,onhertwalks,ather school,onherpilgrimagetoRome,and inherconventinafterlife.Likeall God'ssaints,shelearntverywellthis firstandlastlessonofallsanctityprayer.WithherthewordsofOur BlessedSaviourweretakenattheir fullvalue:"Ceasenottopray,"Pray always."
