JThasbeenmoreandmoreevidentthatthemenandslogans ofyesterdayarecertainlynot inapositiontocarryonsuccessfullythestrugglewithHitler.Onlyanewandbetteridea iscapableofproducingandgatheringthenecessarystrength,andonly achallengethatpointstothefuture isabletoshakeandtooverthrow thesysteminpowerto-day.Toolong thefighthasbeenfoughtfrompure resentmentandfromunfruitfulfeelings ofhatredandnegation.
ForobviousreasonsitistobeexpectedthatagreatpartoftheGerman emigrantsstillpossessthisoutlook, whereastheGermanoppositioninside theReichhaslongsincegonebeyond theoldpartyslogansandpartyforms, presentinginthemainaspiritual unitythatlacksonlytheopportunity tomanifestitself.
ItisbettertobecometheexpressionofthisoppositionwithinGermany,evenifthismeansabandoningthoseemigrantswhoarestillpreoccupiedwithpartiesandpartylines intheirreasoning.
Again,someoftheemigrantsdonot approveofthepolicyofrejectingall co-operationwiththeCommunists,consciouslyanduncompromisingly.It was,andstillis,oneofthedecisive weaknessesofthefightagainstthe Hitleritesystemthatthisfightwas, andstillis,frequentlyunderopenor disguisedCommunistleadership.Apart fromtheintellectualandmoraluncleannessthatisthusintroducedinto thestruggle,allrealeffectiveness amongtheGermanpeopleislost,for theyhavenowishtochangeadictatorshipinbrownforoneinred.
WemustthereforerejectallconnectionswithanysortofBolshevism, justasunconditionallyasconnections withNazism.Inbothdictatorial

Therightofnationalself-determinationbelongstotheRussiansasmuch asitdoestotheCzechs,Poles-andobviously,totheGermanpeoplealso. Andwiththiswedefinitelyinclude thethirdpointofthe"AtlanticDeclaration,"whichassertstherightof nationstodetermineforthemselves thatinternalformoflifeandgovernmentwhichisbestadaptedtotheir nature.
Thedemandsofpoliticalpractice givesupporttosuchfundamentalprinciples.Consequently,everythingmust bedonetoeffectthegreatestdamage possibletoHitler'swarmachine,
Theimmensedamagesustainedby thismachinetodatehasalreadyhad seriousrepercussionsonthemoraleof theGermanpeople,thusaccelerating thedownfallofNazisminatwofold manner,
Tohastenthisprocessisademand whichpolitics,basedonrealism,makes obviousAndthiscanbeaccomplishedthroughmaterialaidtothe Russianarmyaswellasthroughmore intensepeacepropagandaamongthe Germanpeoplethemselves.
3.BOGNOMICSECURITY.
Thethirdaimis"Economicdemocracyandsocialco-operation,"
Thegreatestcatastrophesthathave precipitatedupontheworldduringthe lastthreedecades(ofwhichwarBolshevism,HitlerismandFascismare onlyvariousmanifestationsandprofiteers)havebeencausedprimarily bytheinstabilityoftheeconomic order.

Ithas,ofcourse,greatpotentialities fordamage,andrequiresconsiderable practicetouseproperly.Foryears, attemptshavebeenmadetoovercome thesedisadvantages,withtheresult thatallmannerofcontrivanceshave beendeveloped.Inthemain,such deviceshavebeenopenrazorswith guards,bladesthatareessentiallysectionsofsuchrazors,andthefamiliar hoe-typerazorwiththedouble-edge waferblade.Itisthelast-namedthehoe-typerazor-thatismostwidelyused.Comparedwiththeopen razoritisaninefficientshavinginstrument,butitisrelativelysafeand easytouse,andthisaccountsforits popularity.Atleastthecutsarenot asdeepnorasseriousasthosereceivedfromanopenrazor.Theblades themselves,however,leavemuchtobe desired;itisnotnecessarytorecount herehowwidelytheyvaryinsharp-

Othertypesofso-calledsafety razorshavebeensuccessfulinvaryingdegrees,Generallyspeaking,they areefficientindirectratiototheir similaritytothehollow-ground,open razortype,whiletheirdegreeofsafenessandeaseofuseisininverseratio. Arazorcannotbesatisfactorilyemployedsimplywithwater -itwouldpullthehairs,irritatethe face,andbequicklydulled.Topreventthis,agentsmustbeemployedto (1)softenthehairs,sothattheycan becutmoreeasily;(2)softentheskin andlenditpliancy,soitwillgivebeforetherazor,therebyminimising abrasions;(3)provideamatrixtosupportthehairs,sothattherazorcan cutthematanangle;and(4)lubricatetherazorinorderthatitwillglide moreeasilyovertheskin.These functionsaremoreorlessperformedby themanyshavingsoapsandcreams offeredforthepurpose,althoughthe actualsofteningactionisaccomplished bywater.Hairsarecoatedwitha naturalprotectionofoil.Soapis necessarytoremovethiscoat,sothat watercanpenetrate:latherholdsthe water,sothatitwillnotflowaway. ThePrimeMinister'sfrequentwarningsthatvictoryinthe warcancomeonlyoutofsacrifice,haveculminatedinthepresent AusterityCampaign.TheGovernment'saimistoinstilintothe publicconsciousnessamoresobersenseoftheperilsandthenecessitiesofthewarsituation,andhencetobringaboutamorepersonal responsibilityinourmethodsoflivingcharacterisedbyseveresimplicityandlackofluxury.Theappealforausterityisanappeal toapaganpeople,foritasksthem"toscorndelightsandlivelaboriousdays"fromsheerlynatural (althoughperhapsthehighest natural)motives.HadAustraliabeenaChristiannation,its peoplemighthavebeenaskedtodopenance.butpenanceisno longerpalatablewhentheconvictionofsinhasgrowncold.However,thepracticalapplicationofbothwillhaveverysimilarexternaleffects.Theywillaffectthingswhicharehadorindifferent inthemselves.Itisunlikelythatpeoplewillsuddenlyrenounce evilfrommotivesofpatriotismwhentheywouldnotdosooutof theloveorfearofGod.Butsomesuccessmaybeanticipatedfrom the"indifferent"category,whichafterallisthelargestofall.It ispossiblethatpeoplemaybeinducedtocurtaintheuseofthose thingstowhichtheyarenotattachedbyviciouspassion.Forthe plainmanofcommonsensewillreadilyseethathisownandhis country'ssurvivalmaywellhanguponsuchrenunciation.
ThePrimeMinisterwasapparentlyawareofthisdifficulty aboutmotiveswhenhesoughttoenlisttheaidofthechurches"to giveaspiritualforcetoourausterityappeal."Forwhatever successmaycomefrompatrioticreasonsorsentiment,itiscertain thatfarmoreistobehopedfromcitizenswhoviewthewarprimarilyastheresultofatheismandapostasyfromGod,andarewillingtoacceptitshardshipsandeventoseektheminaspiritof Christianpenance,andevenperhapsasameasureofreparationto theoutragedmajestyofGod.TheGovernmentis,naturally,chieflyconcernedtocurtailprivatespending,tohaveWarLoansoversubscribed,toconserveessentialmaterialsandtoreleasethemaximumman-power.Butthesethingscanobviouslyonlycomeby theconcertedactionofpeoplewhosemindsareimbuedwithright andpowerfulmotives,andwhosewillsarehabituallyaccustomed toactagainstlowerinclinations.Suchpeoplefallbroadlyinto twoclasses.TherearethoseChristianswhoacceptthecomplete revelationofChrist,especiallythose"hardsayings"aboutrepentanceforsin."takinguptheCross,"andtheeternalpunishment. Andtherearethoseagainwhomaybedescribedaslogicalpagans. andwho,inthepursuitofhighermaterialends,arepreparedto sacrificelowerones.Butthese,forthemostpart,aremotivated byselfishness.

Amanwilldowithoutnormallegitimatepleasuresforthesake ofsavingmoney,andwillenduremonotonousstudytoobtainsome positionordistinction.Butwhentheendinviewisnottohis personalmaterialadvantage,ortohispersonalspiritualsatisfaction,asinscienceorphilanthropy,willhebeabletopersevere?It ispreciselyonthismatterofenduranceorfortitudethatthe strengthoftheChristianeffortwillstandoutaboveanypurely naturalethic.TheCatholicespeciallyisinuredtoawayoflife whichcomprisesverylargelytherenunciationofself-interestfor supernaturalmotives,andfromwhichhederivesnopersonalsatisfaction,exceptthatofagoodconscience.Nowitwillbeinterestingtonotejusttowhatextentthesheerlyabstractappealof patriotismwillinfluencethelogicalpagan.Itistruethatthe survivalofAustraliawillultimatelyhetohisadvantage.Buthas hebeenaccustomedtothelong-rangeview,orhashisincomplete ethicimpelledhimtomoreimmediateends?TheCatholiccan lookthroughthegatesofdeathtotheprospectofeternity.But forthepaganlifeissoshortthathemustbeconstantlytempted togatherrosebudswhilehemay.Howeverthatmaybe,theCatholiccommunitywillhesolidlybehindtheAusterityCampaign. notonlyfortheexcellentnaturalmotiveofsavingournativeland fromtheJapanese,butalsoforthesupernaturalhopeofsavingit fromthedevilandallhisworks.

Animpressiveaddresswasdelivered byRev.FatherE.McLoughlin, O.SS.R,inthecourseofwhichhesaid thatthetransformationeffectedinthe soulbythegraceofvocationwasno lesswondrousthanthemiraclesby whichChristrestoredsighttothe blind.Bythegraceofvocation,the recipientwasenabledtoseethetranscendentbeautyofreligiouslife,and wasmovedtoacceptit,despitetheselfdenialthataccompaniedit.This self-denial,bywhichtheaspirantto religiouslifesurrenderedherliberty intheworld,andboundherselfby vows,toleadalifeofpoverty,purity andobedience.socompletelytranscendedtheweaknessofhumannature,that theProtestantmindcouldnotbeconvincedthatReligiousLifewasgenuine,andwaseverofferingsinister motivestoexplainitsexistence.We thoroughlyagreethattheReligious Lifehasnonaturalexplanation,but weofferasupernaturalone-thesupernaturalfunctioningofGod'sgraceon thesoul;illuminingthemindandfortifyingthewill.Thisactionofgrace onthesouldoesnotdestroythefreewill;andpostulatescorrespondenceon thepartoftheaspiranttoReligious Life.Thiscorrespondenceonthe partoftherecipientofGod'sgraceentailsself-denialandsacrifice,butthis self-sacrificeiswellrepaidbythe sweetnesswhichinevitablyfollowson bearingChrist'syoke,forChristhas said,andHiswordscannotfail,"My yokeissweetandmyburdenlight."
SincethepublicationoftheAutobiographyofthe"LittleFlower,"thereis nolongeranyjustificationforany misgivingsconcerningthelifeofanun: Theyoungnunlaysbarethemysteriesofreligiouslife,revealingitsgodlinessanditshappiness.Thebeauty andfragranceofherlifefiredtheint aginationofanunbelievingworldand capturedtheheartsofthousands.Over twomillioncopiesweresoldinacomparativelyshorttime,andtranslations numberedthirty-five.TheAutobiographyofthe"LittleFlower"hassilencedforevertheaspersionsoftheenemiesoftheCatholicChurchonConvent liferevealingasitdoesalifeofgodlinessandhappiness.Sogreatwasher triumphovertheweaknessofhuman naturethatnoteventheapproachof deathintheflowerofheryearscould robherofherhappiness.Shetestifiesherself,thatthecertaintyofapproachingdeathfilledherwithinexpressiblehappiness.

WhenOurLordtoldHisdisciplesto gointoalltheworldandtopreachthe Gospeltoeverycreature,Hewassettingataskwhichmaywellhaveseemedtothem,asmenbredintheJewish tradition,notonlymorallydangerous butevenimpossible.Bywhatpower werethey,fewinnumberandignor- ant,togainahearingfromthepagan
society?YettheMasterhadcommandeditandHiswordwaslaw.The burdenoftheirobligationmusthave begottenasenseofhopelessinadequacy,ButJesuswasrisenandascended,Hisinvisibilitydidnotmake theirdependenceonHimandHiswillingnesstohelpanylessthaninformertimes.Theseconsiderations,weare justifiedinbelieving,createdanattitudeofreceptivitywhichmadepossiblethepentecostalexperience.It wastheacceptanceoftheapostolate impliedintheCrosswhichprepared thewayfortheGiftoftheHolySpirit. Onefeatureofthisgreatisland,and itisnearly1,000mileslongbysome 350atitswidest,isthatitiswell-nigh harbourless.Shipsmustanchor,if theywishtolandortotakeongoods, inexposedroadsteads-andtheweatherisuncertain,andcanbevery nasty.Buttothisfeaturethereare twoexceptions.First,ontheeast coastthereisTamatave,andthewonderfulCanaldesPangalanes,towhich weshallreturn.Second,almoston thetipoftheisland,onthenorth-east, isDiegoSuarez,whichtheFrench, eversincetheiroccupation,haveclaimedtobethefinestharbourintheworld.
Andthefinestitis,ifutilityalonebe considered-landlocked,healthy,with deepwaterthroughout,andcapableof containingnotonlytheAlliedFleets, buttheentirenaviesoftheworld.And aglanceatthemapshowshowitdominatesthesearoutesthatcrosstheIndianOcean.
ToforestallJapanesepossessionof thiskeyharbourmaywellhavebeen matteroflifeordeath.Thethree monthsspentinmakingreadytheexpeditionaryforcethathasjustoccupiedDiegoSuarezwerewellspent.
ANavalBase.
DiegoSuarezhasbeenanavalbase ofsortseversinceFrancefirstproclaimedaprotectoratein1885,butit wasneveracommercialport.Trade wentinandoutofTamatave.And withthatharbour,too,weare,orshall be,concerned.Asananchorage,itis onlyfair,thoughithasbeenimproved, butfromTamatavesouththereruns perhapsthemostextraordinarysystem oflagoonsintheworld.Forover300 milestheyextend,paralleltothe coast,sometimesopeningintooneanother,sometimesseparatedonlyby narrowbarriers,alwaysseparatedfrom theoceanbyacontinuous,never-shifting,bar.Onlysome30milesofcanal hadtobecuttocompletemorethan 300milesofcompleteshelter.Such istheCanaldesPangalanes,ofwhich theFrenchhavebeenjustlyproud; anditisthecanaland,stillmoreso, DiegoSuarezthatconstitutethepresentimportanceofMadagascar.Economically,wemayadd,theislandhas greatpotentialities,butislittledeveloped;andtheMalagasy(asboth theinhabitantsandtheirlanguageare called)wouldnotbeofvalueinthe war.(Inthewarof1914-1918the FrenchdidemployMalagasytroops, buttheydidnothavethevalueofthe SenegaleseorAnnamese.)

Geographically.Madagascarisvery interesting.Itisnot,asis,e.g.,TasmaniaorNewGuinea,acontinental island,separatedfromthemainland
byacontinentalshelf,100fathoms,or less,belowthesurface.TheMozambiqueChannel,betweenAfricaand Madagascar,isdeep,verydeep.Still, astherocksshow,theislandwas oncepartofAfrica,asalsowasArabia.
Therearemany,andtheirnumberis increasing,whoholdWegener'stheory (wecanhardlyspeakofitasyetas proven)--oramodificationofit-ofthe driftingapartofthecontinents.Those whodoholditconsiderthatAustralia (theWesternPlateau),India(the Deccan),andAntarctica,oncealljoin. edontoAfrica.ThepressureofAfricaagainstEuropemadetheBalkans, AlpsandAtlas,whilstthenorthern partofIndiaactallypenetratedunder whatisnowCentralAsia,andliftedup theplateauofTibet.Atanyrate, Africaisstillsplittingto-day,principallyalongtheRiftValley,inKenya, butalsoinotherplaces;andthosewho holdbyWegener,DuToit,andothers, predictthatinsomemillionsofyears muchofEastAfricawillhavesplitoff fromthemaincontinentjustasArabiaandMadagascarhavealreadydone. Thereare,ofcourse,othertheoriesto explaintheundoubtedconnectionthat onceexistedbetweentheseplaces,and alsowithSouthAmerica,butWegener'sthesiscertainlyexplainssome verystrangefactsthatotherwisewe cannotaccountfor.
AProblemClimate.
TheclimateofMadagascaralsopresentsproblems.Thesouthandthe south-westoftheislandhaveameagre rainfall,under15inches,andtheclimateandvegetationisnotunlikethe LittleKarrooofSouthAfrica.Andit cannotbesimplyexplainedby"rain shadow."Andthere,forthepresent, wemustleaveit.Elsewhereconditionsarewhatwewouldexpect.The eastcoastishotandsteamy,withrain fromtheTradesalltheyear.Here arethedenserainforeststhatoccupy aboutone-eighthoftheislandwith ebony,rosewood,andothervaluable timbers.Theinteriorplateauofworn downoldrockshasafineclimate, somethinglikethatofKenya,while thenorth-west,withonlysummer rains,ispartlygrassland.
Madagascarhas,onthewhole,apoor fauna-thelemurs,those"halfapes," beingthemostcharacteristicanimal. Buttheislandhad,untilquiterecentlyagreatwinglessbird,theeapyornis, thatdwarfedtheextinctNewZealand moa,andlaidaneggwhosecontents rantogallons.Itisprobable,though notcertain,thattheearlyEuropeans inMadagascarfoundthesebirdsstill livingthere;atanyrate,theywerein existencewhenMarcoPolowrote,from hearsay,hisaccountof"Madeigascar,'" mixingitupverymuchwithAfrica.
