Threefalseapproachestothequestion andthreeconditionsofmutualaction

¶"Russia,ifitremainsCommunistic,willnot begivenaplaceatthecouncilofnationsafter thewartoassistintheremakingofEurope."

ReligiousFreedomisAcidTest

Therearethreefalseapproachesto thequestionofaidtoRussia.

Thefirstisthesuggestionthat NazismisagreatermenacethanCommunism.Thispleafailstomakea distinctionbetweenanexternalanda domesticmenace.Externally,NazismisunquestionablyagreatermenacethanCommunism,butinternally, i.e.,asregardsourAmericanwayof life,Communismisthegreaterdanger.

Thesecondfalseapproachargues: Ifyourhousewereburning,wouldyou askwhathisreligionwasoftheman whocametohelpyouputitout.No! 1wouldnotaskhimhisreligion,but Iwouldaskhimifhestartedthefire. AndRussiadidhelpsetfiretoEurope byjointlyburningPolandwithHitler,andapplyingthetorchestoLatvia,EstoniaandFinland,whilethe otherinternationalfirebugsetfireto theWest.

Athirdfalseapproachistopretend thatArticle124oftheSovietConstitutiongivesthesamereligiousliberty astheAmericanBillofRights.The factsinthecaseare:

1.Article124ofthe1936constitution isarestrictionratherthananextensionofreligiousliberty.Theoldconstitutionof1929"securedfreedomof religiousandanti-religiouspropaganda toallitscitizens.'The1936constitutionmakesadistinctionbetween "freedomofreligiousworshipand freedomofanti-religiouspropaganda:' Inotherwords,itispermittedto worship,butnottobroadcast,forthis ispropaganda.

2.Article125restrictsfreedomof speech,press,assembly''tothosewho upholdandstrengthenthesocialist system,"whichmeansitisdeniedto allwhoareopposedtoitsatheism.

3."Religiousassociationsdonot enjoytherightofajuridicalperson." (DecreeofJanuary23,1918,paragraph 12,whichdecreeisstillineffect.)

4.Statutes2and3ofLawofApril 8,1929,paragraph114-3Aread:"Religiousassociationsmaynotgivema- terialassistancetotheirmembers,or-

TherecenttreatybetweenBritainandRussia,andtheAlliancebetween AmericaandRussia,mustgiveeverythinkingpersonpause.WiththeGermanattackontheU.S.S.R.militaryassistancebecamedesirableandindeed inevitable.ButasourSundaycontemporaryremarkedsignificantlyregardingtheNEWdevelopment:"Itisnotacompromiseforthemoment.Itis apactbetweentwoidealogiesdifferingintheirmethods,butnowrealisingthat theiraimsarethesame."FortheCatholic,thepositionisconfusiontwice confounded,ThefollowingarticlebyMonsignorFultonSheen,although writtenprimarilyforAmericans,hasmuchofgeneralapplicationtothe nowimperativetaskofsettingthelimitstotheco-operationwithRussia assheis.Thearticlewas,ofcourse,writtenbeforethenewtreatywas announced:-

ganiseforchildren,youngpeopleand women,specialprayerorothermeetings,circles,orgroupsordepartments forBiblicalorliterarystudy,sewing, workingortheteachingofreligion, etc.,ororganiseexcursions,children's playgrounds,publiclibrariesororganic sanitoriaandmedicalassistance.-

5.ThewholephilosophyofourBill ofRightsandthatoftheSovietConstitutionaredifferentinessence.Americaholdsthat"theCreatorhasendoweduswithcertainunalienable rights."FortheSoviets,theState isthesourceofrights,hencetheState cantakethemaway.Furthermore, religiouslibertyisa"right"forAmericans,buttheSovietConstitution usesThetheweakword"recognise." questionofaidtoRussiamust beginwithadistinctionbetweenRussiaandCommunism.Russiaisnot Communism.Russiapre-existedCommunismandwillexistlongafter Communismhassuccumbedtoreason anddecency.Thisisavaliddistinctionbecause:

1.TheCatholicChurchitselfmakes it.TheChurchhascondemnedCommunismbutnotRussia;shehascondemnedNazismbutnotGermany.A philosophyoflifeisnotidenticalwith apeople.

2.ThroughouttheentireCatholic world,theprayerswhicharesaidat theendofeveryLowMassareofferedfortheintentionofRussia,butcertainlynotforCommunism.Twenty- sixthousandpriestsintheUnited Statesaloneofferthoseprayersevery morninginobediencetotheordersof thelateHolyFather,PiusXI.

3.ThereisnowayofknowingwhetherPresidentRoosevelthadthis distinctioninmind,hutitisinterestingtonotethatinhistelegramto Kalinin,thePresidentoftheSoviet Republic,aftertheNaziinvasionof Russia,thePresidentsenthisbest wishestothe"Russianpeople"-not totheSovietRepublic.

SUBJECTIVEIMPRESSIONS.

R.:Asamatteroffact,thatwould beanexaggeration.Butitisprobablynotanexaggerationtosaythatit seemstoyoulikethat,Andthereasonisbecauseyouhavestrongerfeelingsonthissubjectthanonothermattersofwhichyouhaveheardme speak.Otherlistenersfindmyvoice fullofvenomonothersubjects,butnot onthis.Ourlikesanddislikesaffect ourimpressionsfarmorethanwethink. Sooften,whenwelikeaperson,weput thebestconstructiononallthathe saysanddoes;butifwedislikehim, hecandonothingrightinoureyes. AndIthinkYouwillfindthatthetone ofmyvoicedoesnotreallyvary.They areyourdispositionsthathavevaried themomentyouhearmediscussing Russiafromtheviewpointofreligion.

R.:Shedoesnot.Sheisopposed. nottoRussia,buttoCommunism. whichaimsattheabolitionofreligion altogether.TheCatholicChurchrefusestoidentifyRussiaandCommunism,Russiaexistedlongbefore Communismarrived,andwillexistafter ithasgone.TheprayersafterMass ineveryCatholicChurchthroughout theworldareofferedeveryday,by orderofthePope,forRussia.That doesnotlooklikehatredofRussia,or oftheRussianpeople.

R.:ThatPactwasindefensible. Stalinexplaineditbysayingthatitwas notpromptedbyloveforNazism,but onlybyexpediency,inordertosecure timetopreparethebetterforself-defence.YetbythatPactheagreedto thecrucifixionofPoland,agreeingto letGermanytakehalfwhilsthetook theotherhalf,andpromisingGermany diplomaticsupportagainstEngland andFrance.Inthemoralorder,subsequentvirtuesdonotdemandthatwe denypastvicestohavebeenvices.

R.:Allauthoritiesdonotagreeto that.TheMunichPactdiffersalmost infinitelyfromtheRusso-GermanPact. TheMunichPactwasanefforttoavoid war.TheRusso-GermanPactwas inordertoletHitlerbeginhiswaron PolandwiththeconnivanceofRussia,

clergyatthe timeoftheReformation

violatetheMunichPact,andrenderin vainalltheeffortsofChamberlainto preservepeaceinourtime.There wasnothingintheMunichPacttoex cuseStalin'sPactwithGermany,save thefactthatifEnglandandGermany didnotfight,Germanywouldhefree toturnonRussia.Andthatfeardid notjustifyStalininagreeingwithHit

ler'sproposition,"Let'scrucifyPoland."Themorallawhasinternational aswellasnationalandindividualimplications.Andinhisfamous"Fiy PeacePoints,"thepresentPopeinsistedonthesanctityofinternationallaw, andonthebindingforceofjustcontracts,togetherwiththerightsofsmall nations.

R.:OfWolsey'scharacterIhavealreadyspoken.TodefendtheCatholicreligiononeisnotcalleduponto defendtheconductofallwho,throughoutthecourseofhistory,haveprofessedthatreligion,TheChurchisnot toblameforthebehaviourofunworthymembersanymorethanGodisto blameforthosewhoviolatetheTen Commandments.Whenyoucanfind peoplelivingrightuptotheteachings oftheCatholicChurch,andarethen bad,itwillbetimeenoughtoworry abouttheChurch.Butthatwillnever be.Meantimeyoushouldpointout toyourfriendthat,evenwereheright intransferringtheblamefromHenry VIII.toWolseyforEngland'slossof theCatholicFaith,thefactremains thatheadmitsEngland'sdeparture fromtheCatholicChurchtohavebeen blameworthy.Thatdepartureremains asunjustifiableasever,andconsequentlythepresentpositionofEnglish non-Catholics.TheonlywayEngland'sdeparturecouldbejustified wouldbebyprovingtheCatholicreligionasareligiontobewrong.And asthatcannotbedone,theywere wrongwhorenouncedit,whateveroccasionedsuchadisastrouschoice.

theUniformTaxproposals.Butthat doesnotinvalidatehispleafordecentralisation.Anyonewithhalf-aneyecanseethatthemajorissueofAustralia'sfuturewillbejoinedoverthe respectiverightsoftheStatesandthe Commonwealth.ItisnotatallunlikelythatthebondsofFederationwill suffertheirsevereststrainoverthis veryquestionoftaxation.Itwasthe issueoverwhichBritainprimarilylost theAmericancolonies,anditmayunhappilybetherockonwhichAustralianunitymaybeshattered.

Thereisverylittleexternalevidence oftherealfeelingsoftheStates.Consideringthethreattoournationalsurvival,theyhaveshownadmirablerestraintandarecontentingthemselves withinstitutingalegaltest.Butthe realtemperofthematterrunsvery muchdeeper.Fortotakefromthe Statestheirrightofindependently raisingrevenueisindirectlytotake fromthemthepowerofgovernment, forineverysocietyinhistorymoney hasultimatelyhadthelastsayinpolitics,ThegrievanceoftheStates wouldnotbesobitterifthereexisted somegenuineandtrustworthyguaranteethattheUniformTaxationmeasureswereonly"fortheduration." ButtheCommonwealthTreasurerhas openlystatedthathedesirestheBills notmerelyasawar-timemeasure,but asapermanentthing.Grantedthat theoperationoftheActswillprobably ensurelowertaxation,themeasures givefairpromiseofpermanence.But onceagain,thecriterionofsocialprogressisnotmoneynorequality,but freedom.

Nobodyismorealivetotheevilsof centralisationthantheCatholiccommunity.Itisthesinequanonof sometotalitarianregime,callitwhat

"ism"theywill.Decentralisation,on theotherhand,ensuresthatthegovernmentcankeepinclosertouchwith theneedsofthepeopleandavoiddelay andredtapewhichareinherentdefectsofanylargeandcomplexorganisation.AsMr.Clarkeveryjustly pointsout:"Betweengovernmental units,thereprevailsthatbenevolent rivalrywhichisthebestguaranteeof progress:andsmallunitscanattempt boldexperimentswhichwouldbeimpossibleundercentralisation."Itis obviousonthefaceofitthatthemomentStateGovernmentsarereducedto astatusofvassalage,theywillgrowirresponsibleandextravagant.Australia'scryingneedisfordecentralisation, aseriesofwell-developednaturalregionswithtownsscatterednearthe sourceofrawmaterials,withautonomousunitsofgovernment.Thegradual devolutionofStatepowerstoregional authorities,itisrightlyclaimed,rather thantheirabsorptionbytheFederal Government,isthebestwaybywhich Australiawillachieveasuitableenvironmentforsocialjustice.

TheotherprofessorwasProfessor Mauldon,whooccupiestheChairof EconomicsinthelocalUniversity,He hasbeenengagedinaliterarycontroversywithProfessorMurdochoverthe functionoftheeconomistinthetask ofreconstruction. Asentencefrom thelatestphaseoftheargumentcaught myeye.ProfessorMauldonspokeofa "worldwhichmustbepersuadedto changeitsmotivesifanyprescribed methodsforthereconstructionofits economiclifearetohaveaworking chanceofsuccess."Thisisthevery kernelofthematterandincidentally themostdismayingtaskconfronting thesocialreformer.Atthesametime itwasveryencouragingtohearsuch aviewexpressedatatimewhenvarioustypesofmadoptimistsarerunningloosewithvarioussystemsnotable onlyfortheirsimplicity.ToCatholics itisanaxiomthatifyourphilosophyis wrongitdoesn'tmatteragreatdeal whateconomictheoriesyouhold.

Iftheseideasbeoncegranted,itfollowslogicallythatthereshouldbe somemoralconsiderationsrestraining, firstly,thewayinwhichwealthmay beamassed,and,secondly,restraining theuseofitonceacquired.This,of course,wouldberevolutionaryand woulddestroyinoneblowthefoundation-stoneofthemodernfinancial structure-usury.Itwouldalsoput philanthropyoutofcourtinfavourof justice.That'spreciselythetrouble aboutintrudingmotivesintoeconomic question.Thewholediscussionstends todegenerateintoquibblesaboutmoral conduct,whicheveryoneknowsare quiteirrelevant.Yet,theProfessor seemedtothinkwewouldgetnowhere untilweacceptedthisold-fashioned notion. *

Onereadsagooddealabout"the fourfreedoms"guaranteedunderthe AtlanticCharter.Itwasprobably therefore,noaccidentthatthenes Statement,"ForFreedom,"alsosummarisedthepositioninaseriesofpoints whichmayultimatelybegroupedinto four.Thereiswanted:(1)Freedom fortheindividual,(2)freedomforthe family,(3)freedomforthesmallcony munity(ofwhichIhavespokenabove).

Thefourthpointiscurious.Itdoes notpostulateabsolutefreedomforindustry,butadisciplinedfreedom.So

wehavecomeinthecycleoftimetoa denialofoneoftherootdoctrinesof LiberalCapitalism.ItwasAdam Smith,sofarasIknow,whofirstexpoundedthedoctrinein"TheWealth ofNations,"Itwasimmenselypopularwiththeindustrialistsofthe19th. century,andwasardentlyevokedby thegreateststatesmenoftheperiod. Itsavedalongsuccessionofgovernmentsfromworryingundulyoverthm lotofthepoor.

Itwassimplystated.Governments shouldnotinterferewithbusiness. Commerce,lefttoitsowndevices,tendedbysomeinherentlawtoarrangeall thingsequitably.Itwasactuallya none-too-subtleformulationofthepassionofgreed.Itreacheditsapothesis inthegloriousconceptionofInternationalTrade.Allofwhichhasbrokendown.Itisobviousthattherecan benoreturnto.thissystemofeconomiclicence.Itwasalreadycurbedto alargeextentwhentheworker,wholeheartedlysupportedbytheChurch, acteduphisrightofassociation,and formedtheTradeUnions,Thismove wascounteredbythecontrollersof Capitalbythewholesaleorganisation oftrustsandcombines,aidedmostpowerfullybytheanonymityoftrade names.Nomatterhoworganisedthe unions,orhowindignant,orhowdeterminedtosecuretheirrights,inthe fieldoflarge-scaleindustryitwasalwaysdifficulttofeelyouwerekicking therightman.

Butwhilefreedomofindustry,especiallyincompetition,wassomewhat checkedbytheUnions,itwasprogressivelyrevivedbytheCombines.And, furthermore,theclass-strugglewas greatlyintensifiedtothedetrimentof nationalandmoralinterests.Inthe future,commercemustsubservethe commongoodandthiscanonlyeffectivelybedonebygivingindustryselfgovernmentthroughtheorganisation ofvocationalgroups,representativesof allinterestsconcerned,thecentralgovernmentexercisingsupervisorycontrol.

Whenthethieves-RussiaandGermany-telloutlastyear. andRussiabecameourAllyinJuneoflastyear.Mr.Churchill wasatpainstodrawadistinctionbetweenCommunismandthe Russianpeople.Hemadehispointabundantlyclearbysaying: "IunsaynothingofwhatIhavesaidagainstCommunism."The alliancewithRussiawastobeofastrictlymilitarynature,enteredintowiththesolepurposeofdefeatingNazism.Forayear beforehandthequestionofaRussianAlliancehadbeenkeenly debatedinallquarters.ThegeneralCatholicviewpoint(inasfar asitcanbegaugedbythereactionsoftheCatholicPress)was solidlyopposedtothepropositioninEngland,America,andour owncountry.Whenthemilitarytie-upbecameanaccomplished fact,therewasnothingelsetodobuttoacceptit,andCatholics didsowithmisgivingandstrictlyonthebasisofthedeclaration madebyBritain'sPrimeMinister. * *

ButFriday'scablesbroughtthedismayingnewsthatBritain hadenteredintoa20years'treatywiththeSoviet,whilethe UnitedStateshadformallyapprovedofthearrangements.Furthermore,theSovietwillactwithBritainandAmerica,asapartnerwithequalshares,inthetaskofpost-warreconstruction. Whathasoccurredtochangeapurelymilitaryarrangementinto aseemingfusionofideologies?OnesensesSirStaffordCripps asthevillainofthepiece,althoughthedangerousidealismof Mr.AnthonyEdenisthefacadeshowntotheworld.But,Ivha.everthereason,itiscertainthatthelong-sustainedpuffingof RussiabythePresshashaditseffectandthesterileLiberalpoliticianshaveseizeduponcollectivismasthemostfacilepost-war linetopursue.Russia,whichwasmerelypickedupasapassenger,wouldnowseemtobedrivingthebus.Theassurancesthat thefuturewillbeshapedaccordingtotheAtlanticChartermay consolesome,butnoonehasexplainedhowavictoriousRussia maybeconstrainedalongthepathsofvirtue.Mr.Eden,"for whomthetreatyisassoutstandingpersonaltriumph"(saysthe Press).pointsoutthatwehavearrivedat"thishappyresult throughestablishingcompletemutualconfidence"withMoscow. Onefeelsuneasilythattheconfidencemaybeallononeside.

Whateverbethefullimplicationsofthetreaty,however.Catholicsareplacedinamostinvidiousposition.Anyformof political,socialorideologicalcommonactionwiththeSoviet,asit is,theyareboundtoresist.Andnotonejotortittleofevidence hascometolightthatwouldleadustobelievethattheSoviet hasabandonedanyofitsprinciples.IftheSovietproposesto endorsetheAtlanticCharter'spromiseoffreedomofworshipby theretentionofArticle124ofitsConstitution,forinstance,the wholebasisofunionwillbecomealaughingstock.Therehas. moreover,beennomentionoftherenunciationofacrusading Communism.Itistruethatoneoftheguidingprinciplesisthat of"notinterferingintheinternalaffairsofotherStates,"butthe obviousescapeclausehereisthetenuousdistinctionMr.ChurchillmadebetweenCommunismandRussianNationalism.The SovietneveradmittedtoitsofficialactivityinSpain.Willitbe snorehonestinprostrate,post-warEurope? *

Onecuriousfeatureofthenewarrangementisthecautionof theUnitedStatestowardstheSoviet.whichmayormaynotindicatemorerealisminforeignpolicy.Americanofficialdomisnot swallowingcollectivismintheRussianmodeasthepost-war remedy.Itapparentlyseeks"businessasusual."TheAssistant Attorney-Generalhasspokenofa"revivalofCapitalism,"while yetmorerecentlytheSecretaryoftheNavysaid:"Waysand meansmusthefoundtoopenthechannelsofinternationaltrade. Wemusthelpothersalongthepathsofmassproduction,which alonecanbringasteppingupofaveragelivingconditions."But theultimaterootofcautioncannotliehereforCapitalismand Communismhavenorealquarrelovereconomics.Perhapsthe keytoitliesinthePacificstrategy.For,asthe"WestAustralian"pointedout:"Itwouldbeincredibleiftheagreementfor Anglo-AmericanmilitaryinterventioninEuropetoaidRussia werenotaccompaniedbysomeSovietassuranceofco-operation inthePacificincaseofneed."Now,despiteMr.Curtin'swarm approvalofthearrangement,Australianshavehadnohintofreciprocation,andperhapsAmericancautionisbasedonasimilar failure.Inanycase,nofutureideologicalco-operationwithRussiaonbehalfofalargesectidnofworldopinionwillbepossible untiltheU.S.S.R.hasgivenconvincingproofofachangeofheart.

Continuingmytourofinspection,I wentbycartoJericho,theDeadSea, andRiverJordan,passingthrough

someverymountainousandpicturesquecountryenroute.TheDeadSea is1,300feetbelowsealevel,andsaid tobethelowestspotonearth.The lowestinmyestimationisTobruk,but that'sbesidethepoint.Theseaextendsforadistanceof46miles,andis 9mileswide.Itsgreatestdepthis 1,080feet,whichwouldbequiteenough ifachapwasatthebottom.The waterisextremelybittertotasteand consequentlycontainsnolivingthingevenfishhavelimits.TheJordanis justamuddycreek,andwereitnotfor itsBiblicalfamewouldnotbeaplace ofinteresteventothemostardentof sightseers.Jerichoisaramblingnative village,anditsmainclaimtoimportanceisthatitisovershadowedbythe MountofTemptation,wherethedevil temptedOurLordduringHisforty days'fast.Altogetherthetripwas wellworthwhile,andthoughIwent throughthe"spin"yousentmeinfine style,Ihavenoregretswhatsoever.I'm verygratefultoyou,Alex,formaking thistourpossible.

Comingtomorerecenttimes,Mr, HannanreferredtodistinguishedconvertssuchasCardinalNewmanand CardinalManning,MonsignorBenson (sonofanAnglicanArchbishopofCanterbury),FatherRonaldKnox,G.K. Chesterton,andArnoldLunn.These men,afteranintensesearchforthe truth,discoveredthatitresidedonly intheCatholicChurch.Theyhad foundthat-inthewordsofNewman"tobedeepinhistoryistoceasetobe aProtestant."Englishhistory,as servedupforpopularconsumptionin thelastthreecenturies,andevenin thetext-booksprescribedbyourUniversitiesto-day,waswritteninanatmosphereofbigotryandmisunderstanding.Forinstance,itwasdinned intotheearsofstudentsthatEnglandbecamepowerfulandprosperousinthe 19th.century,andthatthatwaslargelyduetothe"Reformation."Thecold, fact-basedonawealthofunimpeach- ableevidence-wasthatthecondition ofthegreatmajorityoftheEnglish peopleintheGeorgianandVictorian erawasmuchworsethaninthe14th.

ThehostilityandfearofthoseopposedtotheChurchcouldbeexplained bytheirabsorptionofhistorylsocalled)emanatingfrombitterlybiassed sources.Thefactshadlongbeenobscured,buttruthismightyandmust prevail,Towardsthosewhohadbeen misledbyfalseteaching,theattitude ofthesincereCatholicshouldbeone ofpatienceandcharity.Hisownlife shouldshinewiththebrightnessofthe lightwhichhasbeenrevealedtohim.

Enlargingonthepowerofgoodexample,thelecturermentionedinstances,withinhisownpersonalexperience, ofthedevoutpracticeoftheFaith beingresponsibleformanyconversions ofnon-Catholics.

Nodoubtitwasexasperatingwhen somefledgelingUniversitystudent,after hearingafewlecturesinphilosophyor science,imaginedhimselfabletosolve theriddleoftheuniverse,orwhen somementallyill-equippedbutvocally loudperson-ontheauthorityofasixpennyrationalisticpamphlet-proved tohisownsatisfactionthattherewas noGod.Insuchcasestheproperattitudewasofkindlytolerance,mingled perhapswithgood-humouredcontempt.

Thereweremany,ofcourse,who scoffedatreligion,andtheirnumber wasgrowing.Thegeneraldeclineof Protestantismwaspavingthewaytoa neo-paganismwhichwasfraughtwith menacetonationalwell-being.Nowadaysonlyaminorityofthecommunityeverthoughtofenteringachurch foranydevotionalpurpose,andsome Catholicsnaturallybecameinfectedby thisincreasingindifferencetospiritual things.Thescofferswereeverready tosaythattheysawnogoodinreligion.andthattheythemselveswere doingquitewellwithoutit.Theanswer wasthattheirjourneywasnotyetfinished,andthatevenbeforethismortal lifewasendedtheymightbitterlyregrettheirrefusaloftheconsolationsof religion.Theywereliketheunbalancedgentlemanwhothoughthecould safelyjumpfromthetopofafiftystoreybuilding,andwhowhenhalfwaytothegroundremarkedwithsatisfaction,"Well,I'malrightsofar."

Thelecturerproceededtoshowthe advantageswhichtheregularandgeneralpracticeofrealreligionofferedto thecommunity.Itmadebetterand moreloyalcitizens,anditwasapowerfulaidintheadvancementofthepublicwelfare.Referringtothepam- phletsissuedbytheCatholichierarchy onthesubjectof"SocialJustice,"he pointedoutthattheydealtwithfundamentalprinciplesofpropergovernment,Nonationcouldbereallygreat ifitpermittedwealthycapitaliststo overridethenaturalrightsofmanand thefamily.Thiswasthegreatevilof thepresenteconomicsystem,andone whichthepronouncementsoftheCatholicBishopssoughttoremove.They werenotenunciatingdoctrinespecu- liarlyCatholic,suchaswerethedogmas oftheInfallibilityofthePopeandtheImmaculateConceptionoftheBlessed Virgin.Theywerevoicingtruthsap- plicabletoallmankind,irrespectiveof creedorcolour.Itwasforthisreason thattheyhadbeengladlywelcomed bymanywhohadlittlesympathywith theCatholicFaith,butwhowereconcernedwiththegrossinequalitiesand injusticesassociatedwithpresentsocialconditions.Catholicsshouldbe proudtothinkthattheirspirituallead-

erswereprominentinpointingtheway tobetterthings-notbythefashioning ofsomeentirelyneworder,butsimply bytherecognitionofman'sGod-given rights.

Inconcluding,Mr.Hannansaidthat agreattrusthadbeencommittedto Catholics.Havingreceivedthetorch ofFaith,theymustkeepitalightand undimmed,andhanditonasapriceless heritagetofuturegenerations.It wouldsustainthemindarkhoursof sorrowandpain,andbringacontentmentwhichnoearthlypossession couldgive.Greatartistshadlabour. edlongandstrenuouslytoproduce someimmortalwork,andyetinthe storyofmankindsuchworkswererelativelyfew.Itwas,however,pos- sibleforeverymotherandfather,when

fortifiedwiththetrueFaith,todirect theirchildreninthepathsofgraceand lastinghappiness.Bysodoing,they wouldbeproducingsomethingatleast asnobleasamasterpieceofart."Sufferthelittlechildrentocomeunto Me,forofsuchistheKingdomofHeaven," Thelecturelastedonehour,andwas followedwithcloseattention.From timetotimemembersoftheaudience demonstratedtheirenjoymentofthe anecdotesandtheaptandhumorous illustrationswithwhichthelecturer reinforcedthevariousaspectsofhis argument.
