Commonwealth issue a
PAS TO RAL LFTTF R on the occasion of the centenary of the establishment of the Hierarchy in Australia . . . THE Archbishops and Bishops of the Catholic Church in the Commonwealth, assembled in Sydney for the commemoration of the completion of the first century since the establishment of the Hierarchy in Australia, register their profound gratitude to Divine Providence for the abundant blessings bestowed on the work of the Church (luring these first hundred years. The century has witnessed an extraordinary expansion of Catholic life, marked by the increased number of dioceses, and the multiplication of parishes, churches and institutions of education and charity, served by a proportionately increased number of diocesan and Regular priests, and of Brothers and Sisters representing many Religious Congregations engaged in the great variety of works which benefit mankind and sustain the honour of the Christian name. Few could have visualised a hundred years ago that the Catholic Church in Australia would, within the century. grow to its present proportions or gather the rich spiritual harvest which, through the blessing of the Divine Master and the zeal of the devoted labourers in this portion of His vineyard, has resulted from its ministrations. These truly marvellous results, which have few parallels in our time, are at once a subject of thanksgiving and of inspiration-thanksgiving to Christ and to His Vicar on earth for the help and guidance that led and encouraged the pioneers who, through many difficulties and privations, went steadfastly onward, leaving to their successors a noble example of zeal and sacrifice. The monuments raised by those pioneer Bishops, priests and laity, will for ages to come continue to inspire to noble endeavour in the cause of Christ the Catholic people of this land. Each generation will in turn leave its own contribution to honour God and diffuse more and more the light of His truth in this southern. land. Mindful of our duty as spiritual leaders of our people, and viewing the gravity of the obligation which the present crisis in the history of our country places upon us, we pledge our fullest support to the Government of the nation and to the gallant Forces who are actually engaged in defending Australia. We appeal to the people under our jurisdiction to leave nothing undone to assist those who are fighting to drive back from our shores
For Value and Service
the powerful enemy that threatens us with invasion and the consequent loss of the national and individual freedom which the people of Australia have enjoyed from the beginning. For the preservation of this freedom no sacrifice is too great and no service, however small, should be neglected. We are grateful for the splendid response of our people, and particularly of our young men, to the call of their country in this supreme hour of her need. They are nobly contributing to the writing of a new and inspiring chapter in the history of this young Commonwealth. But while we discharge faithfully our duty in rendering material help towards the gaining of victory and the restoration of peace, we must never forget that in the end victory and a lasting peace must come from Him Who holds in His hands the destiny of all nations. Therefore, confident of the justice of our cause, we must constantly invoke the blessing of Heaven on the deliberations of our leaders and on the men who are in the active service of the country. We exhort priests and people to make this month of May, and indeed the whole duration of the war, a time of special prayer for the bringing of justice and peace to a war -weary world. There is no better time for prayer than during Holy Mass, and apart from that there is no more powerful prayer than the Rosary recited in the church or in the family circle. Through this prayer Our Lady Help of Christians in times past obtained for the brave defenders of the Christian name the victory of the Christian religion in Europe. We therefore appeal to our people to attend daily Mass whenever possible, and never to omit the daily recital of the Rosary. We ask priests and religious teachers to arrange for the recital of the Rosary by the school children in the Parish church at noon on each school day, and we enjoin on all the urgency of frequent reception of the Holy Sacraments, particularly at this time. While we pray for the safety and welfare of the living, let us never forget the claims of our brave dead, but daily pray that the light of Heaven may shine on their souls.
