IN a letter to the Cardinal secretary of State, the Holy Father has requested that special prayers be offered (luring the month of May to implore a just peace for the world. In response to this express wish of the Holy Father I am sure that our Catholic people kill intensify their prayers in the coming weeks that God,
through the intercession of the Mother of His Son, will grant to all nations the just and lasting peace for which we fight-for which we pray. It is not a peace at any price for which we pray, nor has the Holy Father at any time suggested that a just peace was not worth fighting for, and dying for. Clearly, too, he has enunciated the basic principles upon which any peace agreement must be built, and until they are finally accepted by victors and vanquished alike there will he no real peace, but only another futile armistice. It is indeed significant that in each year of the war the Holy Father has chosen the month of May for a crusade of prayer from the suffering ranks of Christendom. It is no less significant that he places his hopes for the final triumph of truth and justice in the omnipotent mediation of Our Lady. For surely in this, its darkest hour, humanity will not he left unsuccoured by the Godgiven Mother of mankind. With every confidence, then, in the Mother of God and men, to whom our country and our Archdiocese are dedicated, let us turn to her to beg for this war -racked world the just and Christian peace for which the people of all nations desire.
