Dr. McMahon Exhorts Members

of Newman Society University Sunday was observed in St. Mary's ,Cathedral on Sunday last at the 8 o'clock Mass, when the members of the Newman Society gathered for their annual General Communion. Graduates and undergraduates in academic robes, led by the Lord Mayor (Dr. T. W. Meagher) and executive officers of the Society, marched in procession with His Grace the Archbishop from the Palace to the Cathedral. The Mass was celebrated by His Grace, assisted by Rev. Father J. Very Rev. Dr. J. T. McMahon, founder of the Newman Rafferty. Society, and Diocesan Director of Education, preached the following occasional sermon.

VERY REV. J. T. McMAH'ON, M.A., Ph.D., H.Dip-Ed. Preaching from the text: "Because thou hast seen Me, Thomas, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen and have believed," from the Gospel of the day, Dr. McMahon said: The scene in the supper room in Jerusalem depicted for us in the Gospel for Low Sunday, makes us impatient with Thomas doubting the testimony of his fellow -apostles. And we think him childish when he boasts that he will not be so easily imposed upon as the others. "Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will In the same room, not believe." after eight days, all are again assembled, the doors shut, and Jesus came and stood in the midst of them. Then He said to Thomas: "Put in thy finger hither and see My hands: and bring hither thy hand and put it into My side, and be not faithless but believing." One look at that beloved face

was sufficient for Thomas, who fell upon his knees saying: "My Lord and Christ was delighted with my God." the obvious sincerity of Thomas' profession of faith in His presence in the room- Yet, He added: "Because thou hast seen Me, Thomas, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen and have believed." The Promise of the Blessed Eucharist. To understand the application of these words to us, we must go back to that wonderful chapter VI. of St. John's Gospel, a chapter which I hope you University people read frequently. We watch the crowds on the lakeside impatiently awaiting the boats to ferry them across the waters of Galilee, when the word went round that Jesus of Nazareth was seen at Capharnaum. All the yesterday they sat at His feet drinking in the words that fell from His lips and sank into their hearts. And how they wondered at His feeding those thousands by multiplying the loaves and fishes. To -day they are ready to neglect their homes, their fields and their fishing nets-all, even

their pleasures, are forgotten in the desire to see Him again, to hear His voice, and, perhaps, to witness another wonder. At last the boats have landed the final load and the mighty crowd gathers around Him and He beThey listen gins to speak to them. attentively to the references to the manna of Moses, and the multiplication of the loaves and fishes of yesterday, but the reverential silence is broken as small ripples of resentment ruffle that sea of faces, and as He continues to repeat His promise to give them His flesh to eat and His blood to drink, the ripples grow into angry waves which break the crowd into protesting groups: "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?" Christ's reply to this challenge is to re-emphasise His doctrine by dropping the note of entreaty and eager invitation, and demanding their acceptance of this solemn repetition: "Amen, amen. I say unto you: Except you eat the fir ilk of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you shall not have life in you."

ReThe Jews doubted His word. fusing to believe in Him, even after yesterday's proof that He was from God, they argued that no man could give his flesh to be eaten as cannibals do. But He had told them that He would ascend to His Father in Heaven, and that this Body which they now saw with their eyes, and could touch with their hands, would no more walk this earth. The Flesh and Blood He now promises to give them will come in a supernatural way which they could not understand. Christ pleaded with them to have faith in Him, to trust Him. For it is the spirit of faith which enables one to believe, not carnal judgements. But no, like Thomas, they demanded to see before they believed. "This saying is hard, and who can hear it?" Great segments of the crowd broke away to walk no more with Him. They threw away the companionship and friendship of Christ because they doubted His word. The Fulfillment of the Promise. But let us return to the supper room, where the Apostles are assembled for the Last Supper. The ceremonial supper of the Jewish Pasch is finished, a silence fills the room, the Apostles are awed at what is about to happen. And Jesus. taking bread, blessed and broke it, and gave to them, saying: "This is My Body, which is given for you-" Back flew their thoughts to that day by the Sea of Galilee, and they hear again the angry protests and challenge of the Jews: "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?" Here is the answer. They kneel on the floor as He comes towards them, their eyes are on Him and their ears hear the soft padding of His bare feet on the boards: they touch His garments as He moves around them, feeding them with His own Body out of This own hands. What He gives them has the familiar shape and colour of

the bread upon the supper table: (Continued on Back Cover.)
