ThebatteriesofMaltacoulddeal withboththeshipsthatmighttryto coverthelandingoftroopsandwith thelandingparties.Theairsupport wouldbemetbyfighterplanesandby anti-aircraftbatteries.Thisbringsup thesecondpurposeofthedefence,that istheprotectionfrominterferencewith thelifeandtheuseoftheislands.Air attackisbyfarthemostpowerfulweaponforthecarryingoutofanattack ofthiskind.Maltaisfirstandforemostagreatnavalbase.Itcontains thebiggestRoyalNavalDockyardoutsidetheUnitedKingdom.Inadditionitspositionmakesitamostvaluablecentreforaerialactionagainstany pointinSouthernItalyandinNorth Africawithinthereachofmodern bombers.PlanesbasedonMaltacan alsoassistinconvoydutiesoverat leasthalfthewayfromGibraltarand fromAlexandria.TheMediterranean isanarrowseaandinthelonghours ofdaylightthereislittleonitswaters thatcanescapethescrutinyofpatrol planesfromMalta.Infact,Maltabasin planeshavesofarsunkoverlimillion tonsofshippingandtheyhavedropred 2milliontonsofbombs.
ItistopreventtheuseofMaltafor thesepurposes,thatis,offensiveanddefensiveactionbytheairforceandfor themaintenanceofafleet,thatso muchhasbeendonebytheItalianand theGermanairforces.Therehave beensofarover1,600raids,attimesas manyas12or14inoneday,andthe bombardmenthaslastedinsomecases aslongasninehours.Infourmonths therewereonlytwodayswithoutan alarm.
Iaskyoutothinkofwhatthismeans; ofthepsychologicalandcumulativeeffect,oftheanxietyoffamilies,especial-
lyaboutchildren,andtheyarenumerousinMalta,ofthephysicalstrain ofgoingwithoutsleep,ofthematerial damage,7,000buildingswrecked,one areathatharboured24,000inhabitants, entirelyguttedofthecasualties,ofthe lossofthemeansofearningaliving, oftheincomparabledislocationofthe lifeofall,oldandyoung,highandlow, ofthemanyactsofgallantry,ofthe manyawards,ofthedeadlyfireofthe redoubtablegunnersofMalta,ofthe immenseamountofwillinghelpgiven byalltothosewhomaybeinneed.I amgladtobeabletotellyouthatall accounts,fromeveryquarter,speakof thecoolness,thecourageandthegreat faithshownoneveryoccasion.Referencehasbeenmadetothebearingof thepeopleofMalta,evenhereinthe Australianpapers,intheCatholicand inthesecularpress.Writingtome veryrecentlyahighofficeroftheColonialService,whoknowsMaltawell, usedthesewords:"ThewayMaltahas beenstandinguptohertrialsisinthe besttraditionofherprevioushistoryandisanexampletothewholeEmpire."
Youareproud,Iamsure,asIam proud,thatsuchanexampleisbeing givenbyaCatholicpeople,apeople thathavebeenknownfortheirintransigenceinreligiousmattersandthat havetimeandagainmadeitclearthat theywouldhaveno"truck"withmanmadereligion.
Somuchaboutairraids;but,asI havesaid,therearealsotwoother waysofattack,thefirstisbysabotage carriedoutbyspecialparatroops.I haveheardofnoattemptofthiskind sofar,anditiswellknownthatit wouldbeveryeffectivelymet.The otherformofattackisbysmallraiding parties.Therewasanexampleofthis inJunelastwhen23ItalianEboats andspecialtorpedocraftattemptedto forcetheirwayintotheGrandHarbour.ThebatteriesofMaltahitevery oneofthemandnotoneoftheraiders returnedhome. Andhavingtoldyoualittleofwhat thewarhasbroughttoMaltainthe wayofdestructionandhardship,Ifeel thatIshouldtellyousomethingabout somanygoodpeoplewhohavecometo thehelpofMaltainherhourofneed.
AfterthefirstairraidsinJune,1940, HisExcellencytheGovernorofMalta, GeneralSirWilliamDobbie,launched anappealforthebombingvictims.I receivedtheappealinMelbourne,and £3,000wasquicklycontributedbythe MalteseinAustralia.ByJanuary, 1941,thedistresshadbecomeverymuch greaterandtheGovernorissuedasecondappeal.ThistimeIwasready foranAustralian-wideappealinwhich HerExcellencyLadyGowrieandmany ladies,thewivesofnavalofficers,gave unstintedhelpSofarAustraliahas contributed£25,525totheMaltaRelief Fund,andtheAustralianRedCross hassent21tonsofclothingandofspecialrelieffoods.AsIamtheonlyrepresentativeofMaltaonthissideof theworld,andasMaltaisrenderinga servicetoalltheAlliednations,Iappealedforhelpinotherquarters,and asaresult£5,000sterlingwascontributedbySingapore,£4,500byNewZealand,and1£2,000sterlingwasvotedbyHongKong.Sofar,£38,853hasbeen contributedtotheMelbourneFund, andmoremaybeexpected.Other fundsforMaltahavebeenopenedin EnglandandinEgypt,andmuchhelp hasbeengiven.TheirMajestiesthe KingandQueenandtheLordMayor ofLondonareamongthecontributors.

InhisChristmasEveallocutiontothe CollegeofCardinals,HisHolinessthe Popespokeoftheadmirablespectacle ofindomitablecourageinthedefence ofinheritedrightsandsoil;thespectacleofequanimityamidstsorrow;the exampleofmenwhoburnlikefiresof sacrificeforthetriumphoftruthand justice.ThosewordsoftheHoly Fathercanbeheldtobeparticularly applicabletoMalta.Asyouhavelearnt fromrecentnumbersof"TheRecord," thewarhashelpedtomaketheFaith evendeeperandstronger.In1565,after beatingofftheTurks,weinscribedon thegateoftheCityofVictorythese words:"Thouhastcoveredmyheadin thedayofbattle."Whenpeaceshall againbegrantedtothisstrickenworld weshallagainsay:"Thouhastcovered byheadinthedayofbattle,"andwe shalldosowithanevendeeperunderstandingofthesignificanceofthose words.

HE"hatepropaganda"beingdisseminatedbytheDepart. mentofInformationover theA.B.C.andthroughthe dailynewspapershasbeen, tomymind,accuratelydescribedby CaptainC.E.W.Beanas"theatrical outbursts"composedlargely of "screechingthreats"alientotheAustralianspiritandcharacter.TheMinisterforInformation,ontheother hand,hasstoutlydefendedtheseries on"TheJapaneseasheRealyIs,"because,heclaims,theyarerealisticand haveasoundfactualbackground.Let us,forthemoment,abstractfromthe vitalmoralconsiderationsoftheissue, i.e.,thatlyingandhateareessentially evilandcaninnocircumstancesbe justified.Itisenoughtoremember the"atrocitytales"ofthelastwar, andhowtheyareemployedtotoughenmoralewhenthemilitarysituation becomescritical.Butinthiscase, theoccasionforthe"hatepropaganda"seemstohavebeenchosen mostinopportunely,forthegeneral publichashardlyhadtimetoforget MajorGeneralGordonBennett'svindicationoftheJapanesetreatmentof prisonersofwar. Thecrudeandbarbaricoutburstof theDepartmentofInformationis,of course,onlyonefacetoftheallirr. portantissueofpropaganda.ftis interestingtonotethatthev.,orl "propaganda"wasfirstusedswrie threehundredyearsagoinagood senseinatheologicalcontext.Inits modern,shabbysense,thewordis employedtomeananefforttocreate afixedimpressioninasmanyminds aspossiblebyadvocacyandreiterated affirmationcombined.Thistechniquewasfirstadoptedinthecommercialmethodsofthelatenineteenth century,anditwasfromthesalesmanshippractisedbythebigadvertisers thatthepoliticalinstrumentwas copied.TheGreatWar,however, stimulatedittoactivitieshithertounknown.Itwasfoundthatwarinits modernsensecouldnotbefoughtindefinitelyunlessthemillionsengaged couldbefilledwithexcitedhatredof theotherside.Oddlyenough,morale wassustainedbyhatredbasedon fear-hencetheatrocities.Hencethe strainofwarwasmadeendurableby afosteredhatredproceedingfrom dreadoftheenemy'ssuccess.Hand inglovewiththisunnaturalstimulationwentthepolicyofartificialsilence.Everygovernmentemployed fullefforttopreventitssubjectslearningthegravemisfortuneswithbefell theirarmies,air-forces,andfleets. Withoutpropaganda,nationswould tireofwarveryquicklyindeed.
Now,farfrompropagandadisappearingaftertheArmisticein1918, thenewweaponhadproveditselftoo strongtobelightlyabandoned.The useofithadbecomeahabit,andeven anecessity.Inthepasttwenty-five yearsithasdevelopedenormously.
ThenewpoliticalregimesinEurope wouldnothavebeenabletoriseand toendurewithoutit.Inaspecial manneritwasperfectedduringthe SpanishCivilWar.Itdevelopedthree specialcharacteristics.Firstly,itemployedimmediateactionandspeed: secondly,itgaveoutspecificanddetailedaffirmation,reiteratedagainand again;thirdly,itembracedacomplete indifferencetoreality-outrageous, cynical,unexampledlying.Thepublicopinionwascompletelydistorted towardstheNationalistcauseinSpain bytheincidentsofIrun,Guernica, BadajozandthewarshipEspana,yet eachoftheseincidentswerebutexamplesoftheincontinentfalsehood whichhasbeenthespecialityofMoscow,andhasbeenimposedonnearly allnationsandthepressoftheworld. Itishappilytruethatplainmen speakwithincreasingcontemptofpropaganda,forinsomanycasesinrecentyearstheplanhasbeentooobviousandthelyingtoogross.But unhappily,thetruth,whichisdiscoveredsoonerorlater,isalwaystoolate andneverreceivestheworldattention asdidtheantecedentfalsehood.The pressneverexplains,neverapologises, neverretracts,neverrepairs.Inthe presentcase,the"hatepropaganda"is terriblyoldstuffandcompletelyunworthyoftheAustralianpeople.It istruethatnationsharbourcadsand rotters,thatatrocitiesdooccur,but torepresentitasageneralcondition ortogiveexclusiverightstothe enemyisjusttoosilly,inadditionto beingevil.And,moreover,wherethe wholeintentoftheplanislaidopen inthepress,theprojectfallstothe ground.Thepublicisnotgoingtobe terrifiedbyatoysnake.Lastly,but mostimportantly,hatepropaganda cannotbejustifiedfromaChrictan pointofview.Ifweareboundto loveourenemies,thenpresumablyour charityshouldincreaseastheenemy
becomesmoreloathsomeandhost:le lastheA.B.C.broadcastspretend).So thathere,asonnaturalgroundsof commonsense,thepropagandadefeats itself.Whynotgiveuppropaganda asoneoftheworksofthedeviland embracetruth?Fortruthisgreatand willprevail.Ithasbeensaidwecan takeit.Canwe,when"it"istruth? And,moreimportantly,canwegive "it"?
Formypart,IwouldhavebeencontenttolettheAustralian-RussianCongressandallitsworksfadeintooblivion,butsincetheEditorof"The PrimaryProdticer"haswrittenan outrageousleadingarticleonthesubject,itmaybenoharmtopokethe dyingembers.Thisgentlemanconsideredthatperhapsthemostremark-

ablefeatureoftheCongresswasthe factthatleadersprominentinthe churchlifeofthecommunitytooka leadingpartintheday'sproceedings. Whattheyhadtosay,heinterpreted, "vindicatedthatthey acceptedthe RussianideaofaCommunist state. ." Theirpresence,ofcourse, indicatesnothingofthesort;onthe contrary,itshowsthattheymust knownothingwhateveraboutCommunismortheRussianstate,forthe mostbasicpieceofinformationabout eitheristhattheycannotabidethe Christianreligion.Whathashappenedisthattheywishedtoexpress theirhumanitariansympathiesand moralsolidaritywithRussiannationalisminthespecificissueofitsstruggleagainstNazism.Withtheircustomarylackofclarity,theyhavefailedtodistinguishbetweenRussia's nationalcauseandherinternational plotting.However,Iamnotholding abriefforeverymaninthecloth.We haveallheardoftheeccentricRed DeanofCanterbury,butitistoo muchtogeneralisefromisolatedoddities. Whatismoreseriousisthatthe Editorof"ThePrimaryProducer" thoughtthattheclergymen"seemed tofeelthatChristianityrequiredsome justificationinthelightofRussianrevelation."Whetherornottheparsonsfeltthat,itiscertaintheeditor does.Atfirstitreadslieblasphemy, butagainjustlikeboloney.Ofcourse, thewholemuddleisintheblessed word"Christianity."Idon'twonder thatthenon-Catholicsects,invarying degrees,shouldfeeltheneedofsome justification.Theymightfeelthisin thelightoftheCatholicChurch,orof theirownyardstick-theBible-butin thelightoftheRussianrevelation..1
Thosewhohavewhittleddownthe Sacramentofmarriagetoadmitdivorce,orthemoralcodetoadmit birthpreventionmightfeeltheywere unprogressiveagainsttheRussianscene whereyousignforadivorceasyoudo inthiscountryforacrateofducks,or whereabortionandsexualpromiscuity aboundliketheflowersinSpring.But evenanunstart"Christian"sectmight feelsomesmallsenseofsuperiorityin cherishingold-fashionedideasabout theworthoffamilylifeandthedignity ofwomen.TheChristianboastwas thattheOrientfromonhighhadvisitedus;all"ThePrimaryProducer"can sayisthattheOrientalfrombelow hasthreatenedus.
CanonBell'sridiculousstatement, thattheChurchsoughtthesamegoal asCommunism,isjustlyrebukedby
theEditor,who,however,fallsinto thedeeperpitoffatuitybysuggesting ratherthatCommunismseeksthesame goalastheChurch.Exaltedbythis brilliantturnofaphrase,hewrites, pathetically:"IfCommunisminRussiasucceeds,thenwewillhavethe strangepictureofamaterialisticState accomplishinginthelifetimeofone peoplewhattheChurchfailedsomiserablytoachieve;andofthatsame materialisticState,sorecentlyand vehementlydenouncedforitsalleged antiGodcampaign,rallyingtoitsstandardtheheadsofChristianChurcheswhoseeintheRussianwayof lifealeadtowardsaworldrelation. shipbasedonChristianitycalledCommunism."
Surelyatthispointthewritershould haverealisedhewaspenningsheer, classicalnonsense.Onemomenthe confessesthatRussiaisa"materialisticState,"thenext,itisgoingtoachievethesamegoalasChristianity andthatinthelifetimeofonepeople! Isn'tittimepeoplegaveuptalking aboutChristianityandtooktimeoffto findoutwhatitis?Obviouslyworks cannotbethesoletestastheReds andthemuddledparsonsseemto think.ChristHimselfsaidthatHis religionwasmerelyaperfectionofthe OldTestamentcode.Itisafactof every-dayexperiencethattheexternalactsofthegoodChristianandthe goodpaganareidenticaltwins.What

Itisnotthegrandestpieceofmusic thatcatchesatourhearts,ratherisit somesimple,wellrememberedpiece thatwelove,forgreatnesswithout simplicitybeforelongceasestocharm. Theexpressionofafaiththatischildlikeanddeep,thatinformandmannerpossessestheacceptedstandardsof simplicityandspontaneity,cannotfail tosucceedinitspowerofattraction. Thetruemissionofpoetry,asofall art,istogivedelighttothesoul,and onehasonlytoreadthepoemsof MaryKingtorealisethathere,at least,thatmissionhasbeenfulfilled. Herverses,likethoseofotherAustralianpoets,radiateafreshnessthatis whollypleasing.Buttheseattributes areofmeresecondaryimportance,comparedtothegreatmessagethatcomes tousthroughthesepoems-themessageoflovefromChristtoManand fromMantoChrist.Inallofthem willbefoundrareandpreciouswares ofthespirit,thingsbeautiful,which willbringusconsolation,things moreneedednowthaneverinthe stressofwartime.Theyarenot, however,a"wartimeeffort,"and,for themostpart,havebeenwrittenover aperiodofthepastthreeyears,and haveothersourcesofinspirationthan thatofwar.Someofthepoems,itis true,wereborn,asM.L.Dunneobserves,"crimson-dyedinthewinepressofwar,"andtheyareunforgettableintheirhauntingsadnessand beauty.Suchinsightintothesorrow. ingheartofabereavedmothercan onlycomefromanintenselysympatheticpersonality,whichseemstosufferandrejoicewiththerestofhumanity.Thereisonenotethatis neverallowedtocreepintothe thoughtsofthepoet,thatofdespair. Afaiththatisunshakeable,steadfast andtrue,ismanifestedineveryline, afaiththatis,touseherownwords"unadornedandsweet,"andserene andlovely.
makesthesharplineofdistinction isthequestionofmotive,andifChristianitymeansanythinginapractical senseitmeansdoingthingsfor Christ'ssake.Thisitisthatdivides theworksofSt.VincentdePaulfrom LordNuffieldandtheRussiancreche fromtheCatholicfoundlinghome. Hence,thereisaworldofdifference, notindegree,butinkind,between charityontheonehandandmere pity,kindnessandhumanitariansentimentandactivityontheother.What distinctionliesbetweenhope,asa divinevirtue,andoptimism,unlessit istheissueofmotivationandintention?Hencetheworkingman'sparadisewhichdoctrinaireCommunism seeksasitsgoalisfortheChristian merelyameans-asuitableenvironment,wheretheeverlastingmanmay workoutadivine,futuredestiny. Betweenthegoalof"theChurch"and ofCommunismthereisonlythemost superficialresemblanceincertainexternalsrelatingtosocialjustice.But intheirfundamentalandultimateends thereisnocomparisonpossible.
Thehuarystuffaboutthe"miserable failure"oftheChurchisbestansweredbyChesterton'simmortalbonmot: "Christianityhasnotbeentriedand foundwanting;ithasbeenfoundhard andleftuntried."Ofthe"alleged anti-Godcampaign"nothingneedbe urged.Itisduesimplytolackofinformation,andtheEditorof"The PrimaryProducer"mightnotethat the"allegations"arebased,noton ChristianchargesbutonSovietadmissions.Whenthe"headsofthevariousChristianchurches"begintoequate ChristianityandCommunismitwill indeedbea"strangepicture."ButI amwillingtoacceptthisastheacid testofthesimilarityofthetwothings. Thatveryphrase-"theChurch"-amountstoapretenceofspiritualunitywhichhasnobasisinfact.Then,again,thereisawhole pitiableverbalincoherencerelatingto"Christianity."People talkofitalternativelyasoftheindividual'semotionalreactionto hisinterpretationoftheBible,oragainofsomevaguecorpusof spiritualtruthincapableofbeingsetdowninaseriesofobjective statementsorclaims.Whilethesetwoobstacles-oneofthepretenceofunityandtheotheroftranscendentalvagueness-persist itwillnotbepossibletoarriveatevenastartingpointofunity. Andwithoutthat,weasanationwillexertnoworth-while spiritualforce, Allthingsconsideredthen,theoutlookforspiritualunityis notencouraging.Notaloneareweunabletoagreeonthebasic doctrinesoftheChristianrevelation,butevenonthemoreprimaryfactsofnaturalreligion.Yetwar-timeshouldbeaunique opportunity.foritbringsunity,ingreaterorlesserdegree,inevery otherdepartmentoflife.Inpeace-time,wecanallbearmchairstatesmen,butinwarweacceptanever-encroachingpolitical authority.Whycan'twegiveupbeingarm-chairtheologiansand lookforauthoritativespiritualdirection?Itisamazinghowserviletheordinarymanofto-dayistowardsexpertsineveryartand science-saveonlyone,andthatthehighest,thescienceofGod. YetthetruthaboutGodcannotbemany.Itmustbeoneandit must)ediscoverable.Butitwill,)ediscoveredbythereasor aloneandnotbytheemotionsorprivateindividualrevelations. Thestartingpoint,then,willbetherejectionofthesubjectiveapproach.Thiswillentailtheoverthrowofanyfeelingsabout spiritualfacts,andaboveall,therenunciationofhabitswhichconflictwiththeascertainedtruth.Wemustbepreparedforhard consequencesastheresultofdiscoveringtruth,andthatiswhy theobjectiveapproachtoChristianityisnotpopular.Itisknown tobeahardsaying:Whocanhearit?Butuntilithasbeen tried,itcannothefoundwanting.Andunlessitistriedallelse willbefoundwanting,forunlessweseektheKingdomofGodand HisJusticeinthefirstplace,"allthesethings"(includingtheissue ofoursurvival)shallnotbeaddeduntous.

TheVeryRev,FatherB.Gallagher, Administrator,saidthatitwasaday ofrejoicingforthepeopleoftheDioceseofGeraldton,astheywelcomed thenewBishopofGeraldtonintohis CathedralofSt.FrancisXavier.On behalfofthepriests,thereligiousand thelaityofthediocese,whowererepresentedbythepeopleofGeraldton andbyothersdrawnfromthedistrict surroundingthetown,hetenderedto BishopGummertheirheartfeltloyalty. Theypromisedhimtheirco-operation inallhislaboursandendeavoursto furthertheworkofGodinthediocese,whichhadbeencommittedtohis care.Hewouldfindthepeopleonly toowillingtojoinwithhimineverythingheundertook.Theyhadattendedtowitnesshisenthronementand theirpresencewastestimonytothecooperationandloyaltytheywouldever extendtohim.WithhimthatmorningtheywouldoffertheHolySacrifice oftheMasstobegtheblessingsofGod onhiswork;thatHemightblesshim andmightabundantlyrewardanyeffortBishopGummerwouldundertakeforthegloryofGodandforthe advancementoftheChurch.
ArchbishopPrendivillesaidthathe hadbeenprivilegedbyHisExcellency theApostolicDelegatetoenthronethe MostRev.Dr.GummerasBishopof theDioceseofGeraldton,andinso doingheofferedhimhisownpersonal congratulationsandhisbestwishesfor aprosperousandfruitfulreign.He alsoofferedtothenewBishopthefelicitationsofBishopRaible,oftheKimberleys,whothroughcircumstances overwhichhehadnocontrol,had founditimpossibletoattendtheceremony.HealsocongratulatedBishop GummeronbehalfoftheLordAbbot ofNewNorcia,whowaspresentinthe sanctuary.BishopGummersucceed-

Hesaidthatthedaywasoneof thanksgivinganddedicationandcommemoration,whentheyrecalledOur Lord'sentryintotheholycityof Jerusalem.Thereweremanyconsiderationsonwhichtheymightponder, andtherewasawealthofspiritualinspirationwhichtheymightdrawfrom suchreflection.Theycouldfirst considerthesublimedignityofthe officeofaBishop;howthatofficeextendedfromtheBishopofGeraldton to-daythroughtheagesinoneunbrokenlinetotheApostles.They couldreflecthowthatofficehadbeen handeddownfrompredecessortosuccessorassupernaturallyasofold, whenthemantleofoneprophetfellon

cordofachievementwasmoreindeliblywrittenintheheartsofhisgratefulandloyalandappreciativepeople. forwhomhetoileduntiringlyandenergeticallyforaperiodoftwelveyears.
Inwelcominghissuccessor,theyappreciatedthewisechoicewhichhadbeen made.BishopGummerwasamanof outstandingscholarlyattainments:one withpracticalexperienceinparochial activitiesandamanofsoundadministrativeability,wellabletobuild spirituallyandmateriallyonthefoundationssofaithfullyandwelllaidby hispredecessors.Theyprayedthat Godmightblesshislabours.Hewould receivetheloyaltyofthepriests,religiousandpeopleintheadvancementof theworkofGodinthatvastdiocese, ofwhichhehadnowassumedcontrol.

lem,andasthepopulacehadreceived theirDivineMastersotheyreceived BishopGummerwithacclamationand withpalmsintheirhands.Hecame intohiscitywhensorrowovershadow edthelandandtheyofferedtheprayeroftheLord:"Ifpossibleletthis bitterchalicepassfrommyhands,but notmywillbutThinebedone."He camefinallytobeartestimonytothe truth.WhenaccusedbyPilate, JesusChristmadeonlyonepleafor HimselfwhenHesaid:"Icometobear testimonytothetruth."Inthissingleandsimplesentencetheyhadthe wholephilosophyoflife.Inthissentencetheyhadarefutationofthefalsitywhichunderlinedtheirpresent troubles.Thereweretwoclassesof menwhofellintotheerrorofthis falsehood.Theyweretoldthatthe worldcalledforpeaceandtherewas nopeace.Theylookedonpeacea, somethinghavinganindependent beingandthatitcouldstandwithout foundation.Theotherstoldthem thattheycouldnothavepeace,and onlyprovidedaninterludeforanarmamentsracetoprepareforfurther carnage.Theylookedonpeaceand justiceasasortoftwo-storeyedbuilding,withjusticeasthegroundfloor andpeaceasthesecondstorey.It wasthisclasstowhichPilatebelonged.Pilatetoldthem:"Ihaveno faulttofindinthisjustman,-and thatwasjustasfarashecouldgo. Heknewofpeaceandheknewofjustice,butheneglectedtruth,thereal foundationofall.Christhadnotsaid thatHestoodtestimonytojusticeand peace,butastestimonytothetruth. Truthwastheoneuncompromising fact.Truthwaseternal,therockand foundationofallqualities.Fromthe dawnofeternitytruthappearedinis full,changelessandentireform;unabletogrowlarger,unabletogrow smaller,likethediamondwhichscoredothersubstanceswhilstremaining itselfunscored.Truthwasthebasis ofallcivilisation.Iftheyhadbut truth,otherthingswhichtheysodesiredwouldfollowinitswake.In thecomingoftheirBishoptheyhad truthsymbolised.Hecamefirstand foremosttoteachthetruth.They heardmanypromisesofaneworder afterthepresentwarbutthesepromiseswereold.Leaderssincethe timeofJoshuahadpromisednew orders,buttheyhadnevermaterialised.Therewas,however,onlyone neworderwhichwaspossible,and thatwastheonewhichwouldbe foundedontruth.Therewasonly oneoldtestamentandonenewtestament,andChristhadcomeintothe worldtoestablishthatneworder. Whentheyacceptedthetruthwhich Hepreachedtheywouldhavethenew orderHehadpromised,butnotuntil then.Theyweretoldthatfromthe smokeandcarnageofbattletwo thingswouldemerge.Therewould bepaganismononesideandCatholicismontheother.Theylivedinan ageoftotality.Theyheardoftotal wars,oftotalefforts,ofatotalconsecrationoffacultiesofthisorthat cause,atotaldedicationofpowers, totalbeliefortotalunbelief.Thenew orderwouldthereforebemoulded totallyonpaganismorCatholicism Paganismwasasthewhitenedsepulchre,asdeadastheDeadSeaandas barrenastheSaharaDesert.The manwhotriedtofindinspirationin paganismwouldfindattheendofhis daysthathehadpursuedahopeless andfutilecourse.Peacewould,however,berestoredwhenfaith,truthand justicehadbeenfulfilled.They shouldspeakandseektruthandjustice,andotherthingswouldfollowas anaturalsequence.Inconclusion, hewouldliketorefertothethoughts ofanon-CatholicEnglishwriterwho hadagreatinsightintothatfaithand truthwhichtheCatholicreligion broughttothem.Hespokeofavisit hepaidearlyonemorningtoCoventry.Hehadwanderedamongstthe havocanddestructioncausedby enemyaction,whenhecameupona greatcrowdofpeoplekneeling,people whohadlabouredallnightinthiscity ofdestruction,andwhenthislabour wascompletedhaddedicatedthishour tooffersacrificetotheirGod.In eachsilentprayertherewasstrength,

Merchantseamenspendagreatpart oftheirlivesincramped,uncomfortablequartersatsea,andinthesedays theyareconstantlyexposedtodangersfromtheelementsandfrom enemyactionfromtheair,fromunder thesea,andfromsurfacecraftand mines.Theyseldomseetheirhomes ortheirlovedones,andsome-the Poles,Belgians,Norwegians,Dutch, Frenchandotherswhonowformso largeapartoftheMerchantNavy- havenohomestowhichtheycango untilthewarisover.Thesemenare fightingourbattleandriskingtheir livesalmosteveryhourofeveryday tobringusthenecessitiesoflife. ThetoastwassupportedbyCr.F. RowlandandMessrs.A.Meadowcroft andL.J.Chapman.
BishopGummer,inhisreply,said thatGeraldtonwasworthyoftheadmirationandprideofitspeople.Since hisarrivalmanyhadcommentedthat hehadcomeataninopportunetime. Theytoldhimthattheywereconfrontedwithdangersandthatthepeople wereupset.However,hedisagreed withthemonthatpoint.Whenthere wasdangertheshepherd,unlesshewas ahireling,shouldbewithhisflock, andsincehisappointmenttotheSee ofGeraldtonhehadonedesireandthat wastoarriveinhisdioceseattheearliestpossibleopportunity.Fromthe previousdayhebelongedtoGeraldton, andinthespiritualsense,Geraldton belongedtohim.Hewouldlikethe peopleofGeraldtontoregardhimas oneofthem,askeenasthemselvesto advancetheinterestsofthetownand ofthediocesetowhichhehadbeen appointed.Loyaltywasagreatthing. TherewasloyaltyfirsttoGodand thentoone'scountry,andloyaltyto thefamilyandtoone'stown.They hadagreatexponentofcivicloyaltyin BishopO'Collins.Healwaysspoke withprideofGeraldton,andhehad nevermetabetteragentforthetown thantheformerBishop.Hewouldbe longremembered,notonlyfortheaffectionateplaceheoccupiedinthehearts ofhispeople,butforhisworkincompletingtheCathedral,astructure whichwouldgraceatownmuchlarger thanGeraldton.Besidesthecathedral,theyhadexcellentschools,convents,colleges,hospitalsandcharitable institutions,allinkeepingwiththe spiritoftheChurch.TherehadrecentlybeensometalkaboutaJapaneseAmbassadorfortheVatican.Ifthe influenceoftheChurchwasextended, hewoulddefyanybodytosaythatinfluencewasusedforanythingbutthe welfareofmankind.TheyhadadequateproofofthatinAustralia.They hadevidenceoftheendeavoursofthe Vaticantotraceprisonersofwarand bringcomfortandrelieftoagonising hearts.Theycouldrestassuredthat withthefurtheranxietycausedbythe fallofSingaporetheHolyFather,the Pope,hadalreadysetintrainrepresentations,throughchannelswhichhe alonecoulduse,whichwouldbring comfortoncemoretobereavedhomes andtootherswhoweresufferingthe painsofuncertaintyastothefateof lovedones.Iftheinfluenceofthe Churchcouldbeextendedthatinfluencewouldneverbeusedtodamage thepeople.
Inconclusion,theBishopsaidthatas theirnumberswerefewinGeraldton, itwasimperativethattheyshouldbe united.Thereshouldbenosectionalismandhewaspleasedtolearnsince hisarrivaloftheunityofthepeople. Hewasgratefulthatsuchastateof affairsshouldexist,andiftherewasno otherreasonwhyhewouldwishtoremainwiththemformanyyearshe wouldcertainlydesiretodosoafter learningoftheunityofthepeople.

Continuing,'theBishopsaidthat therewasonenotewhichhedesired tostrike.HeknewthemasgoodpeopleAsCatholicstherewereperhaps nonebetter,nonemoreloyalandnone moreproudofthefactthattheywere Catholics.However,thedangerous timesthroughwhichtheywerepassing demandedthattheyshouldbestill betterCatholics.Thiswasnotanage forweakness.Theywantedpeopleto bestrongintheirfaith,stronginits practiceandstrongintheirconfidence inAlmightyGod.Thereweredangers tothesoul,dangerswhichtheywould alwayshavewiththemcomingfrom theworld,thefleshandthedevil. Howcouldtheybendtheirkneesto GodandaskHimforHisprotection andguidanceiftheirconsciencestold themthattherewassomethingintheir liveswhichwasdispleasingtoHim, whoseprotectiontheysought.He hadtakenashisepiscopalmottothe wordsofthePsalm,"Nosautemin NomineDomini"(Ourtrustisinthe NameoftheLord).Letothersplace theirtrustinchariotsandmechanical devices,orinwhatevertheywilled; theyhadtoplacetheirtrustinthe nameoftheLord,andwhateverdangerscametheirwaytheywouldface themtogether,confidentofthegood andguidingloveofChristtheirLord. FatherLynchinhiseloquentaddress madereferencetohisenthronementon theanniversaryofChrist'sentryinto Jerusalem,whenHewasgreetedtumultouslybythepeople,buttheyshould notforgetthesufferingHehadundergonesubsequently.Theremightbe sufferingbeforethem,butwhatwould allthismatteriftheywereinthestate ofgraceandhadconfidenceinGod's goodnessAfterGoodFridayhad cometheResurrectionmorning,the dayoftriumph,thegreatestdayin Christ'smortallife.They,likewise, couldfacethefuturewiththeutmost confidenceiftheyplacedtheirtrust implicitlyinGodandinthewordsof theTeDeum,whichhadbeensungat thecommencementofthemorning ceremoniestheycouldsay:"InThee,0Lord,haveItrusted,Ishallnever beabandoned." Onemorelinkwiththeearlydays ofKalgoorliewasbrokenwhen,on March10,Mr.MartinHartigan,of80 TheAvenue,Nedlands,passedaway suddenlyatNorseman.
AsonofthelateMr.andMrs.MartinHartigan,ofKyneton,Victoria,and agrandsonofMr.MartinHartigan, who,togetherwithhisfirstcousinand closefriend,SirJohnO'Shannessy,were amongthestout-heartedCatholicpioneersofVictoria.
In1902Mr.HartiganmarriedMiss NellieHogan,daughterofMr.andMrs. MichaelHogan,pioneersofTylden, Victoria,andcameWest,settlingat Kalgoorlie,whereheengagedinthe gold-miningindustry.
Widelyknownandhighlyesteemed duringhis25years'residenceatKalgoorlie,Mr.Hartiganalwaysextended agenerousandhelpinghandtoothers lessfortunatethanhimself.Hetook averykeenandactivepartinpublic affairs,andwasfortwentyyears,in anhonorarycapacity,Kalgoorliedelegateatallminingconferences.Among otherbenefits,Mr.HartiganwasinstrumentalinobtainingfortheGoldfields theexperimentalplantattheKalgoorlieSchoolofMinesforpracticaltests onrefractoryores.Thisplanthas provedofgreatvaluetogoldminingin
thisState,andwasinstrumentalin solvingthetreatmentproblemsofthe Wilunaore.
Adebaterandspeakerofoutstandingability,Mr.Hartiganwaskeenlyinterestedandwidelyandwellinformed onpoliticalmatters.Onewhowould neversellthetruthtoservethehour, hethreetimesunsuccessfullycontested Parliamentaryelections.
Aftereightyearssuccessfullyconductingfarmingoperationswithhisfamily atBroomhill,Mr.Hartigancameto Perthtolive,andatthetimeofhis suddendeathwasawayonaprospectingtripatNorseman.
Mr.Hartigan'sremainswerebrought toPerthbyroad,andafterRequiem Mass,celebratedattheChurchofthe HolyRosarybytheVeryRev.Father Moss,afriendofmanyyears,hisremainswerelaidtorestattheKarrakattaCemetery.Thelastprayers wererecitedbytheVeryRev.Father Moss,assistedbytheRev,FathersJ Fahey,F.O'ReillyandF.O'Connor.
Mr.Hartigan,whowasinhis66th. year,leavesawidow,twosons,three daughters,andonebrother,Mr.WilliamHartigan,ofKyneton,tomourn hisloss.

ThedeathoccurredinPerthonMarch 6,ofMr.EdwardB.(Teddy) White, followingaseriousoperation.ThedeceasedwasborninMelbourne,andwas theeldestsonofthelateMr.Dan White,andduringhisschooldayswas oneoftheprincipalaltarboysofSt. Patrick'sCathedral.Hehadtwobrethers,one,thelateVictorGeorgeWhite, residentmedicalofficerofThursday Island,andtheother,Jack,residesin Brisbane.Mr.WhitecametoPerth intheearlyninetiestomanagea branchofhisfather'scoachbuilding business,afterwardsgoingtoKalgoorlie,whereformanyyearshewasprominentinallCatholicmovements,chieflyinaidofbuildingSt.Mary'sChurch, alsootherpublicactivities,L.V.A., HuntandPoloClubs,andalongofficial associationwiththeW.A.T.C.,Canning Park,andtheKalgoorlieRacingClub. Hewasofakindlyandgenialdisposition,andhispassingwillberegretted bymanyoldfriendsthroughoutthe State.Mr.Whiteleavesawidow,son anddaughtertomournhisloss.
FollowingaRequiemMass,celebratedinSt.Mary'sCathedralonMarch7, theremainswereprivatelyinterredat Karrakatta.Rev.Dr.Collins,thelate parishpriestofToodyay,officiated.

ItwastheeveoftheFeastofSt. Joseph14wetomiserableafternoon, withfrequentclapsofthunderand vividflashesoflightning.TheboardersofCresfieldHouseweresorrowfullygazingatthesullenskies.They hadbeenpromisedatriptotheBoys' BoardingSchool,Mary'sMount,onthe followingday-theweatherpermitting-
Justamonthpreviousthesefortysixgirls,accompaniedbytennuns, hadevacuatedtheirConventatFremantle,andhadcometotheHillsfor safetyandfortheopportunityofpursuingtheirstudies.Althoughtheyhadnotthecomfortsandconveniences oftheirFremantlehome,yet,spurred onbytheexampleofthebraveSisters. whosegreatestdeprivationwastheabsenceoftheirChapel,thegirlsjoyfully acceptedthelackofcomfortsandsettleddown.
Sotheynowviewedtheweatherwith dismay,butSistersaid"St.Joseph willnotdisappointus.Askhimto obtainafinedayforusto-morrow." Atoncethesaintwasbesiegedbybig andlittle,andeventhenightclosed inwithoceansofrain,frequentthunderandlightning,thegirlswereconfidentthattheirprayerswouldbe answered.Theysleptsoundly-as schoolgirlsusuallydo-andleftthe matteroftheweatherinthecapable handsofChrist's'fosterfather.
"Ohyeoflittlefaith!Whydoye doubt?"Themorningbroke-calm, dryandbeautiful.HolyMasswas celebratedinthefrontroom,where thegoodSistershadimprovisedan altar.JustbeforereceivingHoly Communion,theNunsrenewedtheir vows,withthegirlskneelinground them,andtheselatterweredeeplyimpressed.
Afterbreakfast,thebusarrivedand allsetoutinglorioussunshine,fora longdayatMary'sMount,allthoughts ofwaranditsevilsforgotten,forat leastoneday.Onarrival,thegirls madeavisittotheBlessedSacrament, inordertothankGodandtheirloved Patronforthedelightfulweather.Tennis,ramblesintheorchard,andswings
weretheninorderuntilthebell soundedfordinner.Intothelong diningroomthegirlsfiled,anddelight shonefromtheireyesastheygazed onthetablesliterallygroaningunder theweightoftheroyalfaresetthereon. Allthingsearthlyhaveanend,and soSt.Joseph'sDayfor1942wasfinished.ThePHswalkedthecoupleof milesfromMary'sMounttoCresfield atseveno'clock,andthoughtiredthey enjoyedit.Theair-toquotethe poets-was"likewine."Noneedfor Sistertourgeherchargestoprepare forbedthatnight.Theymadeno delay,butinanastonishinglyshort time,hadtheirheadsonthepillows. Oneandalldeclaredthat,inspiteof evacuation-orwasitbecauseofit?St.Joseph'sDay,1942,wasthebest vet,andtheiradvicetoallis"Itead Joseph."

ItisapproachingclosetoadangerousfarcewhenaCongressofRussophilespresumestodefinetheduties oftheAustralianchurchesandofindividualChristians.Weknowour dutyinthisregardonlytoowell.
Itisgoodforustorememberbefore consideringthisnewRussianwayof life(whichweknowasCommunism), thatuntilJune22,1941Britain'swar againstNaziGermanywasregardedbyevenAustralianCommunistsasan imperialistwar.TheunexpectedinvolvementofHolyRussiaconvertedit notonlyintoajustwar,butintoa veritablecrusade.Priortothatthey hadbeennotmerelylukewarm,but soantagonisticastocausetheirsup- pressionthroughouttheCommonwealth.SowhenRussiawasattack. edandbecameourmilitaryally,Mr. Churchilldeclaredforthrightlythat Russiawouldreceiveallpossibleaid againstthecommonfoe,butthathe unsaidnothingofwhathehadsaid againstCommunism.Similarly,Mr. Menzies,thenPrimeMinisterofAustralia,stated:"Iwanttomakeit clearthatwhenanyBritishcountry welcomes,asBritishcountriesdo,any aidthatcanbegivenbyRussiainthe wayofdestroyingGermanmilitary power,itisnotequivalenttosaying thatweidentifyourpoliticalviews withthoseofRussia."SirEarlePage wasevenmoreexplicitwhenhesaid: "Wehavenotenteredintoanalliance withapoliticalcreedorsocialideology,butwithaStatethatisfighting HitleriteGermany."
Andinallthecurrentconfusionof thoughtandglibtalkingaboutDu shevikRussia,onethinghasnever beeninvestigatedorairedinanyway andthatistheuncompromisinghostilityofdoctrinaireCommunismand ofBolshevisminpracticeagainstthe Christianreligionofanykind.
CatholicismandCommunism-ChristianityandCommunism-aremutually exclusive.Thereisnoremotestpossibilityofcompromise.ItispreciselybecauseChristianityiswhatitis thatCommunistshateitsobitterly, andlikewiseistheCatholicChurchthe specialobjectoftheirloathing,becauseittothem,representsauthoritativeChristianity.
ItisnottheideologyofCommunism thatwillgivethiscountrythespiritual forcethatwillunifyourpeopleand inspirethemtoheroicthingsthatAustraliamightbecomegreatandfree.
