It is difficult for a Christian man or woman to look on this war other than as a scourge of the Trinity-in just retribution for the apostasy of the nations Christ has been and of the masses. unceremoniously, even savagely, driven from international and from public morality. The crucifix has been torn from the walls of our schools, yes, even here in Australia, and with it has gone the sanctity of love and the indissolubility of marriage, the inviolable right to life of the unborn child, and the protection and development of adolescence by the parents of the nation and by the State itself. Gone is respect for all authority, unfulfilled the duty of censoring pornographic filth, and little concern is shown over atheistic propaganda in an allegedly Christian Comonwealth. The real morale, the real standard of our young manhood is eloquently ex-

Christ or His teaching, knowing nothi of the greatest fact of history-the f' of Christ, of His life in Palestine, His Death and Resurrection. Free, secular education has failed-it has given us for the greater part a Godless youth . . a youth to whom the words of Christ are strange, unheard of, and from whom the divine ultimatum on the necessity of penance in our lives draws a childish snigger or a sophisticated sneer. And moreover, the youth of to -day are but the products of their homes, and where they are not-then the home has failed, as too often It has. Yet perhaps at no other period of our national history has the Christian Church in her liturgical period of Lent so much to teach us . on that very point. If there was one thing Christ insisted upon, it was the necessity of penance. And if there is one thing we, as a nation, have forgotten, it is just that-the necessity of penance, and the fact that we needed to be redeem-

pressed in the Forces of the King. Our young men, and why not say it, are being utterly demoralised in camp life whilst they are being trained to fight "in defence of Christianity." Yet all this is little to be wondered at. These present generations are but the flowering of our national culture. If that sounds damning, it is meant to. For we can still go on from day to clay so completely oblivious of where we are heading, and of the paramount need of prayer in the present emergency. The Christ we have rejected, said Father Lalor, will not hear our prayer of supplication unless we manifest our sincerity by penance. The necessity
of penance was one of the things that But God became man to teach us. as a nation we are proud to-day. We in a fool's paradisehave been living politically, socially and spiritually. Only by facing realities will we achieve a resurrection, through the blood and sweat of war, of our nation-old and blase whilst yet it is young. That is the warning of the Lenten Liturgy which commences to-day. It is the spirit of this season of penance that matters-and we should carry it on throughout the year, that this element of penance might become part of our life, always. Each one of us can make it what we will, but each one of us should remember this year just what depends on this spirit of penance voluntarily accepted. And better that by far than a penance involuntarily enforced, from which God deliver us! .
