MixedMarriages

'Worried,"Rockhampton,Queensland. Wouldyoupleasehelpmetoexplain threepointsofCatholicteachingtoa youngwoman,withwhomIhave comeintocontactlately?

Ishallexplainthembriefly.Ifyou willsendmeyournameandaddressI willpostyousonicliteraturewhich treatsmorefullyofthepointsyou mention.

Iamaskedwhy,whenamixedmarriageisabouttotakeplace,thepartiesmustbemarriedintheCatholic Church,thusobligingthenon-Catholicpartytoabidebylawslaiddown bytheCatholicChurch?

TheCatholicChurchtakesherself seriouslyastheonetrueChurchfoundedbyChrist.She,therefore,regards itasherboundendutytoprotectthe faithofhersubjectsineverypossible way,sincethisFaithissovitallyimportantfortheireternalsalvation.In pursuanceofthispurpose,theChurch forbidsCatholicstocontractmarriage exceptintheCatholicChurch,anddeclaresthatanymarriagecontractedby aCatholicoutsidetheChurchisinvalidintheeyesofGod.Now,the Churchdisapprovesofmixedmarriages becausetheyoftenleadtothelossof Faithandtoreligiousindifference,and becausetheyareopposedtothatcompleteunitybetweenhusbandandwife iftheyaredividedonthemostfundamentalofallissues,whichisreligion. NeverthelesstheChurchdoesnotforbidmixedmarriagesabsolutely.She permitsthemundertheconditionslaid downbylawforthesafeguardingofthe FaithoftheCatholicparty.Chief amongsttheseconditionsisawritten undertakingbythenon-Catholicparty toallowtheCatholicpartyfullfreedominthepracticeofhisorherreligionandawrittenundertakingby bothpartiestohaveallthechildren broughtupasCatholics.TheChurch alsoinsiststhatthenon-Catholicparty shouldhavesomeinstructioninthe teachingsoftheCatholicChurch,for itisimportantthatthenon-Catholic partyshouldhavesomeknowledgeof thereligionoftheCatholicparty;it willleadtoabetterunderstandingbetweenthemandgivegreaterhopeof harmonyinthehome.

TheChurchlegislatesforHerown subjects,notforothers.Ifnon-Catholicsarenotwillingtoobservethe conditionslaiddownbytheChurch beforeshewillrecogniseasvalidthe marriageofCatholicstonon-Catholics, thereisnoneedforthemtomarryCatholics.

ISTHECHURCHUNREASONABLE?

Thenon-Catholicpartyneverstipulatesanysuchconditions.

Thenon-Catholicchurchesdonotinsistonsuchconditionsconcerningthe marriageoftheiradherentswithothers. Rutthenthesechurchesusuallyhold thatonereligionisasgoodasanother. TheCatholicChurch,ontheother hand,deniesabsolutelythatonereligionisasgoodasanother;shetakes herselfseriouslyastheOneTrue Church.ThefactthatthenonCatholicchurchesallowagooddealof latitudetotheiradherentsinthematterofmarriage,asinthematterof beliefandworship,isnotasufficient reasonwhytheCatholicChurchshould followsuit.

Whyshouldn'tthenon-Catholicparty beallowedtomarrytheCatholic partyintheProtestantChurch?

Non-Catholicsarefreetomarry wherevertheywish.ButifanonCatholicwishestomarryaCatholic, theChurchinsiststhatthemarriage musttakeplaceintheCatholicChurch. ItisfortheCatholicChurch,notfor thenon-Catholicparty,todetermine whatisrequiredofCathoiics.

WhatrighthastheCatholicChurchto makethesedemands?

Therighttomakesuchdemandswas directlyconferredupontheChurchby ChristHimself,Whosaidtotherulers ofHisChurch:"Whatsoeveryoushall binduponearthshallbeboundalsoin heaven, andwhatsoeveryoushallloose uponearthshallbeloosedalsoin heaven"Matt.XIV.,19;XVIII.,18). Thatmaybeherwayofthinking butitsworthdependsonthevalueof herreasonsforthinkingthatway. The factisthattheChurchdoesnotask anyonetogivemoneyhecannotafford.

Onthecontrary,theChurchteaches explicitlythatnooneisobligedtogive whathecannotaffordtogive.

Suicidemeansthepositiveinfliction ofdeathupononeself.Itisavery seriousmoralwrong,beingopposed bothtothelawofnatureandthe DivineRevelationoftheTenCommandments,TheCatholicChurch doesnotpermitorcondoneitunder anycircumstanceswhatever.

Didnotthecaptainofthe"GrafSpee" commitsuicidetohavethehonour ofhiscountry?
