TheinhabitantsoftheIslandEmpire to-day,includingtheprovincesofFormosaandKorea,numbermorethan 93,000,000.MostoftheseareadherentstotheBuddhistorShintosects; notmorethan210,000areCatholics.
For1,549yearsChristandHisreligionhadbeendebarredfromthecountry.WhenSt.FrancisXavierreachedKagoshimatheEmperorGonarawas reigning,andunderhisprotectionthe apostlefoundawelcome.Fortwoand ahalfyearsXavierremainedinJapan, spreading,asifbymiracle,theFaith ofChrist.In1552hewroteofhisneophytes,"Isawthemrejoicinginour successes,manifestinganardentzeal tospreadtheFaith.'Forthe30years followinghisministrytheGospelspread rapidlywith138priestsandcatechists preachingtosome600,000Catholics.
In1580theEmperorGoyogeiandthe ShogunHideyoshiruledoverJapan, Korea,andManila.Inthatsameyear threeoftheleadingdaimios(feudal lords)sentdelegatestoPopeGregory XIIItothankhimforhavingsentapostlestoleadthemtosalvation.These delegateswentladenwithgiftsforthe HolyFather,evidenceofgratitudefor theirFaith.Inthe33rd,year,asin thelifeoftheirMaster,theChristians begantofeelthefirsttasteofsuffering. Hideyoshi,thwartedinhisdesireto secureayoungCatholicgirlforhis court,attemptedtoexiletheforeign priests.ButthepoweroftheChristianswasgreat,andtheShogunsaw thathewouldonlymeetwithgreater difficultiesifheperseveredinthisplan. Instead,Catholicdaimioswerepunish-
edbybeingsenttothemostdistant anddangerousposts,asfarremovedas possiblefromtheShogun.Itwasbut the'beginning. Whilethisfeelingwascausingalarm inmanycircles,asaintlyFranciscan, FatherPeterBaptist,camefromManila withseveralcompanionstopreach Christinalandwhich,theyhadbeen told,wasripefortheharvest.With aneyetosecuringinformationregardingManila,ratherthanwithanyinterestintheteaching eyoshisentforFatherBaptistand showedhimandhiscompanionsmany favours.TheJesuitswarnedFather Baptisttobecareful.Theypointed outtheinsanejealousyoftheBuddhist priests,andbadehimgoslowly.But thatgoodman,seeingonlysoulsto save,senttohissuperiorsformore Franciscanstohelphiminthisnew field.ForawhiletheChurchcontinuedtospreadrapidly,withmany importantconversionsamongtheleadingnoblemen.Hospitals,leprosaria, orphanageswerefounded;monasteries andchurcheswerebuilt:andwhat seemedtohavebeenathreateningpersecutionwas,forthemoment,averted.
OnJuly12,1596,agreatdisastervisitedKyoto,atthattimetheleading cityofJapan.Acomet,fallingtothe earth,wasfollowedbyvolcaniceruptionsandearthquakes.TheBuddhist priestsseizeduponthisasanevidence oftheangeroftheJapanesegodsshowingtheirdispleasuretotheforeignreligionandtheforeignpriests.Hideyoshiimmediatelyrestrictedtheactivitiesofthepriests,andissuedanedict
-"twoandahalfyearsXavierremain,edinJapan,spreading,asifbyamiracle,theFaithofChrist."
thatnomoreforeignpriestswouldbe allowedtoenterthecountry.Ashort whilelater,aforeignboatloadedwith arichcargoboundforNewSpainwas wreckedontheshoreofJapan.The Shogun'sadvisers,prevailinguponhis avarice,advisedhimtoimprisonthe priestswhowereontheboat,andto takethecargoaspenaltyforpriests daringtoenteralandwheremorehad beenforbidden.TheBuddhistmonks notonlyrejoicedatthiswell-takenadvice,butfolloweditupwiththesuggestionthatitwasunfairtoimprison onlythenewpriests;theoldresident priestsshouldalsobedoneawaywith.
JustbeforeChristmas,Hideyoshi, spurredonbypaganmonks,issuedan edictprescribingdeathfortheCatholic priestsintheland.FatherBaptist, togetherwith23otherpriestsandbrothers,wasthatdaycastintoprison. ShortlyaftertheNewYearcelebrationshadbeenconcludedtheywere bound,loadedthreetoawagon,and takenouttobeshowntothepeopleof thecity.Catholicsfollowedthatsad procession,prayingaloudinspiteof theordersoftheguards,declaringthat they,too,werereadytosufferdeath ratherthandenytheirFaith.Pagans. touchedbythisevidenceofFaith,show. edgreatrespecttotheprisoners.Father Baptistwasinthefirstwagon,encouragingtheothersandpreachingtothem. Someoftheprisonerstoldthecrowds howfortunatetheyweretodieonthe
crossliketheirMasterandLord;a privilege,theyassuredthem,givento few.
FromKyoto,throughthecoldsnow, inadequatelyclothed,theholymenbeganthelongtrekofmorethan400 milestoNagasaki.AtOsaka,oneof theChristianswassoovercomeatthe sightofthepriests'sufferingsthathe clungdesperatelytoFatherBaptist and,whenhecouldnotbedrivenaway, wasaddedtothenumber.Atafurtherstop,Peter,aboyof12,rushed outtothewagonoccupiedbythree brothers,hisformerteachers."I'll staywithyou,"hepromisedthem, "fromnowuntilwereachNagasakior.Heaven!"He,too,wasseizedand takenalong. AllwasinreadinessatNagasaki whenthe26,afterfourweeksofbitter journeying,reachedthehillforexecution,Here,facingtheocean,26crosses hadbeensetupwhich,whenthecondemnedbeheld,theysalutedwithdeep prostrations.Rising,theyallsangthe "TeDeum"andmeeklywenttothe crossonwhicheachone'snamehad beeninscribed.Heretheyweretied withropes,thefacessettowardthe city.AshemountedhiscrossFather Baptistsaidquietly,"Idon'twantto betiedwiththisrope;nailme!"But hisrequestwasrefused.Towardeveningtheworkoffasteningtheprisoners tothecrosseswascompletedandtwo soldierswithspearswerestationedat thesidesofeachcross.Atagiven signalthe26holymartyrsweretranspierced.For80daysthebodieswere leftexposedthere,andatnightthe Christianswouldstealouttowipeup thepreciousbloodandsecurerelicsof theholywood.Yet,inspiteofthe longdelaythefacesofthemartyrs neverchanged.Theywerelikesleepingangels.Thebirdsofprey,asif respectingtheseholytabernacles,did notcomenear, TheArchbishopofManilabeganthe causeforbeatificationofthemartyrs, andinJune,1862,withaconcourseof morethan200,000fromalloverthe world,the26werecanonisedatSt. Peter'sinRome.
WiththecomingofIemitsuasDictatorinJapan,anewandstrongereffortwasmadetowipeoutanyremnantsofChristianity.Arewardof 1,000piecesofsilverwasofferedtoanyoneannouncingthewhereaboutsofa Catholicpriest;100piecesforreporting aChristianlay-person.Coupledwith theinternalpersecutions,international jealousiesbetweenthePortugueseand Dutchmerchantsgaverisetomany accusations.TheDutch,taintedwith thenewProtestantism,influencedthe Dictatortosuchanextentthatall foreigners,excepttheDutch,werefor-

Theyearsprecedingandfollowing 1798againbroughtstrifeintheNorth betweenProtestantandCatholic.In July,1792,WolfeToneandSamuel NeilsonhadaninterviewwithLord DownshireonthesubjectofthedisturbancesthenprevalentinUlster, Tonewrites:"Wepinnedhislordshiptothe confessionthattheCatholicshave neverinanycasebeguntheattack," and"wedeclaredourconvictionthat iftheCatholicscouldseethatthey hadequalprotectionwiththeProtestants,peacewouldbeimmediatelyrestored."
ThomasRussell,whowasmadeJus ticeofthePeaceforCo.Tyronein 1791,resignedinthesameyearbecause,ashesaid,hecouldnotreconcileittohisconsciencetositasamag-

Inthesubsequentpogroms,23,000 Catholicswereexpelledfromtheir homes,theirfurnitureburnedor wrecked,andoftentheveryhouses razedtotheground.

Duringthelesserpogromof1935the disturbancewasconfinedtotheYork StreetareaofBelfast.InthisdistricttheCatholicsnumberfiveper cent,oftheinhabitants.Notawindowwasbrokeninthepredominantly Catholicpartsofthecity,noProtestantmolested,Andnow,whenEnglandisfightingtothedeathforChristianityandthefreedomofsmallnations,theNorthernPremierinvitesa veryresponsibleEnglishMinisterto wearanOrangesashandbeatthebarbaricdrum.

Itisawell-knownhistoricalfactthat thewanderingandwarringtribesof EuropewerecivilisedandChristianised bybeingtaughttheartofagriculture. Takeforexamplethepracticeofthe MonksoftheWest.Theyestablished amonasteryandstartedagriculture. Perhapsnotimmediately,butsooner orlater,tribes,orportionsofthem, attachedthemselvestothevicinity, andguidedbythemonksbegantotill thesoil.TheircivilisationandChristianisationfollowed.
Thereareinvariouscentresofpopulationgroupsofaboriginalslivingclose towhitepopulationswhoknowlittle oftheoldlifeandwhoareekeinga mereexistencebyworkingforwhites, butwhoneverhadanopportunityof tillingthesoiloftheirownland,and asownersoftheproductofthesoil. Untilsuchanopportunityisgiven them,itcanneverbeclaimedthat Australiamadeasincereefforttosave therace.Theopinionhasbeenexpressedbymanywhoknowtheircapacityandhavetheirwelfareatheart thatifaboriginals(whohavesofar progressedin"civilised"methodsasto makeasuccessofmanyclassesof bushwork)hadtheirownlittleplotsof landandweregiventhebenefitof whattheyproduced,asenseofresponsibilitywouldthencomeintotheir lives.Thissenseofresponsibility wouldbesuchascouldnotbeexpectedfromanyothercause.Forthe mostpart,theirlabourhasbeenexploited,butevenwheretheyhavereceivedafairrecompenseinwages,as theQueenslandGovernmentinlater times,bylegislationandsympathetic administration,hasendeavouredtoassurethem,awageevenwhenitenables asmallsaving,doesnotgivethem stabilityandindependence.Although thissystemiscommendableforits effectinprovidingfortheirimmediate wants,itleavestheirchildrenjust wheretheirparentswere,regimented inagroupsystem,or'hangers-on'upon theoutskirtsofthewhitepopulation.
Letthisideabeexaminedandsee howreasonableandpracticalitseems. TakefirsttheNorthernRiversofNew SouthWalesandMenindie.Thereis averyconsiderablenumberofCatholic blacksineachofthesetwodistricts, andwhoquitewellmaybespokenof as"civilised'blacks.Theyareworkingforwhiteemployersaroundtheir districts.Theyareincentreswhere marketscouldbereasonablyassured,if thelandweremadeavailable,andit isunreasonabletothinkthatthesepeoplewouldnotmakeagenerousresponsetosuchamove.Theyare law-abiding.(Theword"citizens"was almostwritten,butnoneoftheirrace haseverbeengiventhestatusofcitizen.)Theyare,however,CatholicsmanyofthemfrequentCommunicants -someofthemareConfirmed,and quiteafairnumberofchildreninboth centresaretaughtinCatholicschools bynuns.AstotheirCatholicity,that isdueinlargemeasuretotheefforts oftwoorthreepriestswithinitiative andtherealspiritofmissionaries.God blessthem-themissionariesandthe blacks!
MenindieandtheNorthernRivers havebeenmentionedastwocentres ofproposedadvancedmissionaryactivity.Addtotheseanumberof PalmIslandaboriginalsinsomesuitablecentreinNorthQueensland,This wouldinvolvetakingCatholicaboriginalsoffthisGovernmentstation. Withtheobjectofkeepingthisidea withinpracticallimits,aswellasdown toareasonablecostforabeginning, addtothethreebefore-mentionedonly twofromthevariousoldestablished CatholicMissions.Oneachofthese
fiveMissionsplaceanaverageof100 men,womenandchildren,say20Catholicfamilies,andthefirstseriousattemptin150yearstosavetherace wouldgodowntothecreditofthe Church.Theaboriginalscouldnotbe giventhedeedsoftheland,foralthoughtheyhaveownedmotorcars andhavehadbankingaccounts(with restrictions)andfoughtintwoWorld WarswithA.I,F.,theymaynotown oneacreofthatlandwhichforcen-
turieswastheirown,theirveryown. Mr.ArchibaldMeston,inhisusualrich phraseologysaid:"Theirtitledeedsof occupationwereoldwhenBritainwas occupiedbytribesofpaintedcannibals,andthemodernBritishracehad neitherahabitationnoraname." However,theproduceoftheland wouldbetheirs,andamilestonein theirnewhistorywouldbereachedon thedaythatapplicationwasmadeto anAustralianGovernmenttopass legislationtoenablethetransferinfee simpleofthetitle-deedsoftheland heldbytheCatholicChurchintrust forvariousheadsofCatholicaboriginal families.

Asfor thelong-establishedMissions,nothing needbesaidaboutthefitnessofafull quotaoftheirsubjectsbeingeminentlysuitablefortheexperiment,bothin regardtotheirCatholicityandtheir generalcapacity.Theonlytroubleto beanticipatedontheseoldMissions wouldbetokeeptheirquotadown tothesmallfiguresmentionedforthe beginningofthisscheme.However, thespreadingoftheexperimentover fivedifferentMissionswouldhave manyadvantages,oneofwhichwould bethattheprogressofeachMission wouldbereadilyknownbyCatholics indistrictsasfarapartastheseMissionswouldbeseparated.Toseethe advantageofthatonethingaloneitis merelynecessarytosaythattheCatholicsectionofPalmIsland,establishedbythefirstBishopofTownsville,Dr,McGuire,asaDiocesanMission,hasdonemorethananything elseinthehistoryoftheChurchto makeknownamongstCatholicsofthe EasternStatesofAustraliaithelarger centresofpopulation'thecapacityand worthinessofaboriginalCatholics.'
Manyaspectsofthisimportantquestionarediscussed,andFatherHealy concludes-
"Twostatementsweremadeatthe beginningofthisarticle,viz.,thatthe aboriginalsdidnotreceiveafairdeal; thatitwaspossiblefortheracetosurvive.Withtheaboriginalpopulation nowat60,000,theyhavethesame rightsasaracethattheyeverhad. Innormalcivilianparlance,a"hut" mightbedescribedasashelterroughlyconstructedandthatchedwith palmsorbranches.Butinmilitary language,ahutmayindeedbeavery substantialstructure.Such,forinstance,istheC.W.O.HutatNortham, wherehospitalityisavailabletoallsoldiersinCampfor365daysoftheyear. Thisbuildingisahandsome,roomy hallofsufficientdimensionstoaccommodate300to400men.Theoutsidewallsareofasbestoswithtimber battensandadadaofweatherboards. Theroofisofcolour-blendedtiles,and numerouswindowopeningsareprovidedonallsides,providingadequate naturallightingandgoodaircirculationinwarmerweather.Overallwindowsexposedtothesunaregailycolouredcanvasblinds,whicharedesignedsoastoadmitanybreezebutshade thewindowfromtheheatofthesun. Thegroundsaroundthehallarelaid outwithgardenbedsandshrubs, whichinthefloweringseasonpresent agayandcolourfulsight.Andprominentinthefrontsectionofthegardensisaflagpolefromwhichflutters thepennantoftheC.W.O.inredlettersonablackground.
Theoriginalstructurewaswithouta porchentrance,butthishassincebeen addedandfromthisporchentryis madeatoneendofthehall.Entrancesarealsoprovidedatthesides. Thehallpresentsaloftyandspacious appearance.Itislinedandceiledin whiteplasterboard,animprovement effectedinthepasttwelvemonths,At oneendofthehallisanaltarscreened fromviewbyarollerblind,whichis inplaceexceptduringMass.Thealtar mayberemovedifrequiredanda clearstageisleftwhichmaybeused byconcertparties,etc.,visitingthe hallforentertainmentpurposes.On onesideofthealtaristhechaplain's room,comfortablyfurnishedandavailablefurtheuseofthechaplain(Rev. Alargefireplaceisafeatureofthe southernwallofthebuildingwhich, nightlyinwintertime,providesabig fireforcoldtroops,Numerouswritingtablesaresetoutinthebodyof thehallwithwritingpaper,envelopes, blotters,etc.,allprovidedfreeof charge.InfacttheC.W.O.service throughoutisentirelyfree.
Nochargeismadeoracceptedfor anyserviceoffered.Bookshelvesare wellstockedwithliteratureofall types,Newspapers,periodicals,etc., areprovideddaily.Thereisalsoa lendinglibraryattachedtothehut fromwhichanysoldiermayhavea bookforreadinginhisownhutortent.
Facilitiesareprovidedforposting lettersinthehutandatelephoneis alsoavailable.Aradiowithloud speakerattachmentisprovided,and isapopularfeatureforbothnewsand entertainment.Inaprominentpositioninthehallisa"SuggestionBox," intowhichtroopsareinvitedtodrop writtensuggestionsforimprovedserviceintheC.W.O.Hut,Itisnoteworthythatoverthepast18months allcommunicationswithoutasingle exceptionhavepraisedC.W10.services andaddedthatitwouldbedifficultto improveuponthosealreadydispensed.
Thecapitalcostofthebuildingand furnitureattheNorthamHallhave beenmetfromC.W.O.funds.Maintenancecostsmustbepaidfromthe samesource.Anydonationsmadeto C.W.O.fundsensurethecontinuance ofthepresenthighstandardofservicetotroops.Donationsofbooks andliteraturearelikewisewelcomed,

AttherequestoftheApostolicDelegation,theOrganisationformeda branchoftheApostolicDelegation PrisonersofWarInformationBureau. Enquiryformswereprinted,andthese formsmadeavailabletothenext-of-kin ofmenreportedmissing.Theinformationsuppliedbythenext-of-kin wasthentransmittedtotheDelegationinSydneywho,inturn,forwardedthemtotheVaticanCity.ImmedatelytheVaticansucceedinfinding thewhereaboutsofthemissingman, theinformationissenttoAustraliaby radioandtransmittedanywheretothe next-of-kin.Needlesstosay,thisadditionalactivityentailsconsiderableexpenseinstationery,postageandtelegrams,butthemeasureofreliefitensurestoparentsandrelativesofthe missingtroopsiswellworththefinan. cialdemand,quiteapartfromthe Christianspiritofcharitywhich promptsit.

OverthepastyearsinceIhavebeen ChaplaintotheCamp,Ihf:vemarlea greatnumberofcontacts,andIlike tothink,quiteafewfriends.
Thereisnodoubtthatalargeconcentrationofmen,workingtogether, eatingtogether,sleepingtogether,gives oneampleopportunitiestostudylife inadifferentform;aformaltogether differentfromthatoneseesinordinary parishwork,andyetonenotlessattractive,Althoughhumannatureremainsthesame,militarylifecallsfora considerableadaptationofhabits,but theAustraliandoesnotappeartofind ittoodifficult. Ifeel,indeed,after
fewshortmonthswhichthetraining periodcovers.
Underthepresentorganisation, whenaChaplainisattachedformessingandquarterstooneparticular unit,itisalittledifficultforaPriest toreallylivewithallthemen;anditis forthatreasonthatthehutprovided andmaintainedbytheCatholicWelfareOrganisationfillsaveryrealneed asfarastheChaplainisconcerned, and,Iamconvinced,providesaunique serviceequallyappreciatedbythe men.
TheHutatMelvillewasinbeingand wasflourishingbeforeIwasattached toMelville,sothatIcansaylittleregardingitsinauguration.ButI thinkthatifIdescribedit,itwouldbe possibleforyoutogainsomeideaof thestructureitself,thesurroundings, anditsplaceinArmylife.
TheHutitselfisbuiltofwood, paintedcreamwithgreenrelief,andis

TheequipmentoftheHutconsists almostentirelyofwritingdesks, chairs,andforms.Thisisinconsequence,apparently,ofthesettledpolicyoftheC.W,O.toexcludegamesof anoisynature,andtoencouragethe writingoflettershomeandstudygenerally.

TheHutiscontinuallyinuse.On severaloccasionsIampleasedtosay thatmenattendingMassfromallunits overflowedthehall,filledthelawns, andwereevenlookingintheback windowsintheirendeavourtohear Mass.Trulyasatisfyingsight!

DURINGPASTYEAR
Averyfinerecordofprogressstands tothecreditoftheCatholicWelfare Organisationduringthepastyear.The workofmaintainingthehutsatMelvilleandNorthamhasbeencarriedon withincreasingpopularity. The groundsoftheMelvilleHuthavebeen grassedandplantedwithshrubs,while steamerchairshavebeensuppliedfor theverandahs,andatbothMelvilleand Northamincreasedcomforthasbeen providedfortheChaplain'squarters. Telephoneshavealsobeeninstalled, thecostofcallsbeingbornebythe C.WJO, TheinterioroftheNorthamHuthas beentastefullylinedandastore-room added.Themainsourcesoffinance forthesedCvelopmentshavebeenthe annualcollectiontakenupintheCatholicparishes,togetherwithdonations frompatrioticbodiesandgenerousindividualofferings.Theproceedsofthe St.Patrick'sDayConcertandofthe CatholicBallwerealsodevotedto C.W.O.work.
Inadditiontomaintainingthetwo existingHuts,theC.W.O.hasprovided chairs,racks,andstationeryforthe KarrakattaCampandgamesanddevotionalobjectsfortheA.I.F.DetentionBarracksatClaremont.Stationery,gamesandobjectsofdevotionhave alsobeensuppliedtotheLadies'Auxiliary(for visitationdistributionduringtheir ofmilitaryhospitals);to Chaplainsservingabroadwiththe A.I.F.,andtothemerchantservice. Arrangementswerealsomadewithte'e FremantlebranchoftheCatholicWomen'sLeaguetocaterfortroopsinthe portwhowerenotvisitingPerth.
TheC.W.O.alsohadthepleasureof assistingBishopO'CollinsintheformationofaServiceClubatGeraldton.A supplyofstationeryandanti-gossip stickerswasdispatchedtothatcentre.
Anotherservicewhichhasbeenvery favourablyreceivedwasthesettingup ofaPrisonerofWarInformationBureau.Thiswasdoneattherequest oftheApostolicDelegate,andiscarried oninconjunctionwiththeVatican RadioService-thespeedandefficiency ofwhichwasratherbelatedlyacknowledgedbythelateFederalGovernment. Theanxietyofmanyparentsandrelativesofmissingsoldiershasbeen speedilyrelievedbythismeans.More than500querieshavebeenmade throughthischannelsinceitcorn. mencedoperationsinJulyoflastyear.
Onthespiritualside.aRollofHonourofCatholictroopskilledonactive servicehasbeenpublishedweeklyin thecolumnsof"TheRecord,"and Masseshavebeenarrangedforthe soulsofthedeceased.SeveralMass kitshavealsobeensuppliedtochaplains.
TheworkoftheC.W.O.wasgenerouslyrecognisedbytheGeneralOfficer CommandingtheWesternCommand, inalettertoHisGracetheArchbishop.
ThecomfortableandquietinterioroftheMelvilleHut. ayear'sexperienceofthiscrosssection ofAustralianmanhood,reallyoptimisticregardingthefutureofthisland ofours.
Itisdifficulttorealise,whenone viewsabodyofsoldiers,thateachman hasabackgroundofindividuality,and thatinprivatelifeanytwomenmay haveneverhadtheopportunityof meetingonwhatonemaycallequal terms,sociallyandeconomically.Yet, heretheyarenow,livinginthesame tent,eatingtogether,andrelyingeach upontheother'sabilityandinitiative forthesuccessfuloutcomeofsome tactical"stunt"uponwhichtheyare bothengaged.
TrulydoestheArmygiveeveryman afreshstart!Eachonenowhas equalopportunitytoformortoreformhimself,andIcouldtellofsome extraordinarychanges,physicaland moral,whichhave....enplaceinthe
linedandceiledinplasterboardand fittedwithalargenumberofwindows.
Themainroomitselfisprobablysixty toeightyfeetlongbyaboutthirty wide,whichgivesaveryusefulfloor area;andatoneendthereisalarge andcosyfireplace,which,Icanassure you,isextremelypopularinthewintertime, Abovethismodernfireplacethereis alargeclock,andinfrontofitseveral tableshavebeenplacedwhereatmen whoarestudyingforexams,,etc.,may workwithoutfearofdisturbance.

ForthatreasonIfeelfreetosay that,inmyopinion,theC.W.O.fillsa veryrealneedinCamplife.Theidea ofmaintainingquietintheHutis splendid,evenifnovel.Itgivesto thosemenwhowishitaroomwhere everyfacilityismadeavailableforthe purposesofstudyorwriting.Disciplineismaintainedbyanexperiencedofficer,whowasacommissionedofficeratthelastwar,andwhoisnow abovemilitaryage.Suppliesofstationeryaremaintainedand,infact, allfacilitiesareprovidedwhichmay assistintheintellectualandmoral advancementofthemenofalldenominationswhomaybeinCampatMelville.

Ladies'Auxiliary
TheLadies'Auxiliary,formedinDecember,1940,comprisestenyoung ladies,andtheyhavesupplementedthe workoftheC.W.O.Executiveduring thepast12months.Theirfirltactivitywastoarrangethecateringfor thelargenumberof"nestswhoattendedtheMelvilleCamp,andtheyalso providedthehousestafffortheSt. Patrick'snightconcert,theproceeds ofwhichweredevotedtotheCatholic WelfareOrganisation.Theirprincipal activityhasbeenhospitalvisitation. Therearealargenumberofpatientsin MilitaryHospitals,andmanyofthem havenofriendsorrelativesableto visitthem.TheLadies'Auxiliary, therefore,undertook'visitationofa MilitaryHospital-twoladieshaving visitediteverySundayafternoonduring1941,anddistributedcomforts providedbytheC.W10.Atotalof447 patientswerevisitedduringtheyear, andthefollowingdistributed:1,231packetsofcigarettes, 437packetsofsweets, 4,842packetswritingmaterial, 1,059magazinesandbooks, RosaryBeads,etc.
Inaddition,100Christmasparcels weredistributedonTuesday,December23,1941.
