Outstanding Progress in Geraldton CATHOLIC COMMUNITY'S REGRET AND CONGRATULATIONS It was announced by His Excellency the Apostolic Delegate (Most Rev. Dr. J. Panico) on Monday last, that the Holy Father had appointed His Lordship Most Rev. Dr, J. P, O'Collins, Bishop of Geraldton, to succeed the late Bishop Foley in the Diocese of Ballarat. Dr. O'Collins was the third Bishop of Geraldton, and during the eleven years of his episcopate the Diocese has made extraordinary progress. His translation to the more important See of Ballarat is a token of esteem and appreciation for his pioneering labours in this State. "The Record" respectfully expresses the regret of the Catholic people of this State at losing His Lordship, but offers sincere congratulations on his new appointment, and hopes he may be spared many years to prosper the fine work begun in Geraldton.
His Lordship was born at Port Melbourne in 1892, the son of parents of Irish birth. Educated at St. Joseph's, Port Melbourne, by the Christian Brothers, Dr. O'Collins exhibited a talent for mechanics and engineering, and took up work in this direction. In 1914 he journeyed to Rome to be present at the ordination of his brother, Rev. Father W. O'Collins, S.J. Director of "Loyola" Retreat House and Jesuit Novitiate, Victoria). His theological studies were commenced at St. Patrick's College, Manly, and completed at Propaganda College, Rome, where he remained for five years. Dr. O'Collins was ordained in St. John Lateran at Christmas time, 1922, by the Vicar -Archbishop o f Rome, After a brief visit to Mgr. Palica. Japan at the time of the destructive earthquake, he returned to Australia. On his return the young priest was appointed assistant to the Rev. Father J. P. Carney, of Yarraville, later being transferred to Our Lady Help of Christians parish, East Brunswick, where he distinguished himself as Spiritual Director of the C,Y.M.S. Little more than seven years from his ordination Father O'Collins was nominated Bishop of Geraldton on February 15, 1930, and consecrated on May Cathedral, 11 in St. Patrick's bourne, by Archbishop Mannix. Ad multos annosl Ballarat, the new diocese of which His Lordship will take control, is very much larger than Geraldton. The Catholic population is nine times greater. It contains 173 churches, ministered by 112 priests. Boarding and day schools for boys and girls number 29, while there are 47 primary schools, conducted by 21 religious Brothers and 395 Nuns. The number of children attending the schools is five and a half thousand. His Lordship will be the fifth Bishop of Ballarat, succeeding the :ate Dr. D. Foley. MOST REV. DR. J. P. O'COLLINS. His Lordship has achieved a consolidation of the Catholic community and an intensification of the spirit of Faith in the Diocese that, in the circumstances, is indeed remarkable, His devotion to pastoral duties and interest in the civic affairs of Geraldton have endeared him to all, Catholic and non catholic alike. The priests and pecple of his Diocese will learn of his departure with profound regret, while rejoicing that his labours and talents have been recognised and rewarded with more ample scope for his apostolic ambitions. Dr. O'Collins comes from a sterling Catholic family. He is a brother of Rev. W. Boarding schools for boys and girls number seven, while there are nineteen primary schools. Over 1,000 children are provided with Catholic education by 133 Nuns and 18 Brothers.
