War,art,andpoetryarethefavouritepastimesoftheJapanese.Their tasteforartandbelles-lettrescameto themfromChinasolongagothatthey haveforgottenitsorigin.Theirlove ofwarisnativetothem,fortheyhave beenbusyfightingamongthemselves forsomanycenturiesthattheydid nothavetimetodisturbtheirneighbours.Thearmyprofessionhasalwaysbeenanhonouredoneamongthe Japanese,asseenfromoneoftheir famousproverbs:"TheSamurai(feudalwarrior)isthenoblestofmen,even asthecherryblossomisthemostbeautifulofflowers."

Nevertheless,Ibecameacquainted withJapannotthroughtheseevents ofhistoricalimportance,butthrough mydailylifeinaJapanesehouse,at myneighbours,inthestreet,onthe marketplace,inthecapital,andinthe fields.

WhenyouapproachJapanfromthe Pacific,thefirstthingyouseeisFujiyarna,intheperfectformofaninvertedfan.ItlookslikeaJapaneseprint. whichisactuallymuchlessstylised thanisbelieved.Thetreesarereally twistedinafantasticmanner,andthe templesdoriseupinsupernatural beauty;ontheTokaido,theimperial highwayfromTokiotoKioto,youcan stillseethetravellersandmerchants wearingasortofmushroomontheir heads,andtheirkimonosraisedtothe waist;ontheirshoulderstheycarrybamboostickswithasmallbundleof theirpersonalpossessionsbalancedat eachend.Butthereisnothing strangeinthatsight:yourecogniseit beforeyouhaveseenit.

Whenyougothroughtheundergroundpassagetotaketheelectric trainfromYokohama,youarepracticallydeafenedbytheclackingof woodenclogsonthestone;thewhole crowdismovingwithsmallhurried steps,buttheyarehamperedbytheir kimonos.

WhenwereachedTokio,wefound thatthecentreofthecity,withits wide,well-pavedstreets,anditsMarunouchiskyscrapersofreinforcedconcrete,lookedlikeamoderncapital.A fewhundredyardsawayfromthissection,however,wefoundnarrowold streetsalongwhichonlypedestrians andrickshawscanpass.Thesestreets, fullofcolourfulshops,aremadelively bythetravellingmerchantswhocan berecognisedfromafarbytheir music.
