DeepFaithofJewishConverts

Tributetodeepfaith,zealandsincerityofconvertsfromJudaismtoCatholicismwaspaidbytheRightRevMgr,ThomasJ.McDonnell,National DirectoroftheSocietyforthePropagationoftheFaith,inastatementat NewYorkrecently. "Harassedbywar,penniless,andin greatnumbershomeless,itwould seemthatthismightbeanopportune timetoenlistthehelpofheavenforthe entranceoftheJewishpeopleintothe TrueFold,"Mgr.McDonnellsays, "Addedtoourprayersweshouldalso includetheaidofatrulyChristian charitytowardsthem,aswellasan understandingoftheirneeds,remembering,atalltimes,that'Catholicism isJudaisminflower-Judaismfulfilled.' Itmightbewelltorecallwithwhat fidelitytheRedeemerHimself,aswell asHisMotherandHisfosterfather,fulfilledtherequirementsoftheOldLaw andthatHeconfidedtheministryof HisChurchtoHisJewishfollowers, 'Thetwoapostles,theseventy-twodisciples,Mary,Martha,Lazarus,Joseph ofArimatheaandNicodemuswereall Jews.Thefirstteachersandconverts, thefirstmartyrs,confessors,widows andvirginswereJewishconverts,while thefirstBishopofJerusalem,St. James,andfourteenofhissuccessors wereHebrewChristians.' NotableConversions.

"Thereisaconsolingfactorregarding conversionsfromJudaism-theyare markedbyadeepfaithandsincerity ofpurpose,towhichisaddedzealfor theenrolmentoftheirfellowmen.The pagesofhistorygivemanyinstances ofsuchconversions-thenineteenth centuryofferingsomesplendidexamples,amongwhicharetheRatisbonne brotherswiththeirworld-embracing faithandfervour-TheSocietyforthe PropagationoftheFaithandthemissionsunderitscareoweadeepdebtof gratitudetoaJewwho"becamea Christian,apriest,andfounderofare-

Thatmanisananimalisnotanew discovery.Itisafactwhichhasbeen recognisedforthousandsofyears;so thatthenoveltyofthediscoveryis nowsomewhatlessthanitwas.

Sincemanisananimal,itisnotsurprisingthatheresemblestheanimals. Andsincetherearevastdifferencesin theappearanceandstructureofanimals,itisnotsurprisingthatheresemblessomeanimalsmorethan others.Manisavertebratemammal. Itwouldberathersurprising,then,if hedidnothavepointsofresemblance withothervertebratemammals.In particular,hebearsacloserbodilyresemblancetotheanthropoidapesthan toanyotherkindofbrute.

POINTSTOBENOTED.

Inthisconnect*,thereareseveral thingstobenoted4themoresosince Messrs.Wells,HuxleyandWellsmake nomentionofthem:-

(1)Chemical,anatomicalandphysiologicalresemblancesarenotproofof geneticrelationship,Theydonot provethatmanevolvedfromtheapes, northatbothapesandmenevolved fromacommonstock.Instrictreason,suchresemblancesprovenomore thanthatthereisarationalplanor designrunningthroughnature;aplan anddesignwhichmakescientificclassificationpossible,andbespeakthework ofanintelligentAuthor.

.(2)Themaindifferencebetween manandthebrutesisnotphysical,but psychological.

(3)Suchbeingthecase,thereal questionatissueisnotwhethermanis justasthoroughlyananimalasanyof thebrutes,butwhether,overandabove hisanimalnaturewemustrecognise inhimtheexistenceofaspiritualmind orsoul,aprinciplewhichdifferentiates himfromthebrutesandmakeshima creatureuniqueandalone,despitethe unmistakableresemblancesbetween bestialorganismsandthehumanbody.

(4)Acarefulexaminationofthe characteristicfunctionsofhumanintelligence,theformationofabstractor dematerialisedconcepts,theformation ofjudgments,reasoningprocesses aboutthingswhichhavenomaterial qualities,thepowerofreflectionand creativeexpressionwhichthemind possesses,aswellasthepoweroffree choicewhichispartofourconscious experience-allthesethingspointunmistakablytothepresenceinmanof aninextended,incomposite,immaterial orspiritualprinciplewhichwecallthe soul.

THEAPES"LEARN."

"Theape,likeourselves,hasitsdue shareofreflexesanditscomplement ofinborninstinctswiththeiraccompanyingemotions," Apartfromthegratuitousassumptionthatinborninstinctsarethe "complement"ofreflexes,thatstatementisquitecorrect.Butitproves nomorethanthatbothmenandapes areanimals.

"Likeourselves,it(theape)cannot onlylearn,butlearnrapidly."

Herewehavemoreofthesophistry andconfusionwhichcharacterisesthe preciousopusofWells,Huxleyand Wells.

Thesophismconsistsintheambiguoususeoftheword"learn."Itmay meanthatboththeapeandmancan learnbytheexperienceofthesenses. Takeninthissense,fewwillquarrel withthestatementthatboththeape andman"learn."

Ontheotherhand,itmaymean thattheapelearnsbyintellectual ideasandjudgmentswhichdifferonly indegreefromthoseofman.Thecontextshowsthatthisispreciselythe meaningwhichthepreciousauthorsintendtoconvey.

Here,however,theycalmlyassume, asproved,theverypointthathasto beproved,andarethusguiltyofthe logicalfallacyofbeggingthequestion.

* ONEAPE'S"INTELLIGENCE."

"Onechimpanzee,studiedbyProfessor Koehler,thoughwhollyuntaught, hadtheideaoffittingonestickinto thehollowofanotherinordertoget atabananawhichwasoutofreach ofeitherstickbyitselfandtodo thatistoanticipateexperienceby thought."

Dr.Koehler'sexperimentswiththe chimpanzeeSultanaredescribedinhis "MentalityoftheApes"(1927).

FollowingDr.Koehler,Messrs.Wells, HuxleyandWellstellusthattheape hadtheideaofputtingonestickinto thehollowofanotherinordertoreach abananaoutofthereachofeither stick.Theytellus,moreover,that,to dothisistoanticipateexperienceby thought.

Theydonottellus,however,that Koehler'sallegedfindingswererejectedasinconclusiveandequivocalby manypsychologists.Listenerswill findastrictlyscientificanddevastatingcriticismofKoehler'sexperiments in"ExperimentalPsychology,"by Prof.HubertGruender.

ButMessrs.Wells,HuxleyandWells donotstoptotelltheirreadersofthe inconclusiveandhighlydoubtfulcharacterofKoehler's"proofs"ofintelligenceinanimals.

Instead,theysimplyassurethereaderthattheexistenceinanimalsofan intelligencesimilarinkindtothatof manisademonstratedfact:"What concernsushere,"theysay,"isthefact that-chimpanzeesandothertrueapes dohavethisfacultyofanticipatingexperience,ofputtingtwoandtwotogethersoastodealwithanewkind ofsituationinanintelligentway.." Butsufficienthasbeensaidtoshow that,apartfromtheveryemphaticassurancesofthelearnedauthors,there islittletoshowthattheirallegedfact isreallyafact. * * * *

THENIGGERINTHEPILL

Whytheauthorsaresoanxiousto havehighlydoubtfultheoriesacceptedasfactisperhapsexplainedbytheir obviousanxietytolessenthegulf whichyawnsbetweenmanandthe brutesinordertomakeanatheistic evolutionarysystempossible.They presenttheoriesforwhichthereisnot ashredofunequivocalevidenceasestablishedfact;theyindulgeinthe pastimeofhumanisingthebrute,thus creatinganillusorybridgebetween manandthebrute.Thentheyhave theaudacitytocalltheirspeculations "science."

Finally,letusassumeforthesakeof argument,thattheapepossessesintelligenceessentiallythesameasthehumanintelligence.Fromthisitwould merelyfollowthatcertainbruteanimalshavearudimentarybutrealintelligence.Itwouldnotexplainthe originofintelligence.

Messrs.Wells,HuxleyandWellsare stillconfrontedwiththeinescapable difficultyofaccountingfortheorigin ofintelligence,and,indeed,ofconsciouslifeofanykindfrombrutematter.Howcanconsciousnessoraware-

ness,whichhasnothingincommon withmatter,betheproductofmatter, i.e.,ofpurelychemical,physicaland mechanicalforces?Thatisthequestiontheymustanswer;thepointthey mustexplain.Andintheirsystem theymustexplainitwithoutintelligencebehindtheprocess.

Needlesstosay,theydonotoffer anyexplanationwhichwillbearamoment'sscrutiny.Butuntiltheydo sotheyhavenofoundationfortheir purelymaterialisticandgodlessuniverse.

Sir,-Itisgoodtoseethearticleon theabovesubjectwhichappeareiin theLondon"Tablet"copiedintoThe Record."ButsurelyenlightenedCatholicshardlyneededtheassuranceof Mr.ChristopherHollisthattheymay acceptHenryGeorge'seconomicdoetrinewithoutinjurytotheirCatholic belief.Certainlycontroversieshave takenplaceoverthelast5;tyyears, andanumberofpriestshavecondemnedtheSingleTax,butthesewere onlyindividualopinionswithoutany bindingupCatholicswhoknowwhere theirfaithrests.

"TheRecord"mentionsthat"Single Taxclaimshaveofrecentyearsbeen agitatedovertheair,"andIhavelearnedthat,ingeneral,theSingleTaxproposalhasbeencondemnedbyCatholic broadcastersinSydneyandinMelbourne.Idon'tlisten-intoradio-life's tooshort.Anyhow,youcannotresolveaquestion"overtheair"-you cannotdiscussthings.Someother time,"TheRecord"permitting,Iwould liketogofurtherintothequestionof theSingleTaxandCatholicprinciples, JustnowIwishtorefertosomepoints inMr.Hollis'articlewhichseemto needsomecorrection.

Mr.HollistwitsHenryGeorgewith having"aweaknessforthe'apriory," butwhatshallwesayofsomeofMr. Holliscauseandeffectstatements whicharequitecontrarytofact?

HesaysthatapassageintheEncyclicalofLeoXIII,"RerumNovar. um,"beingacceptedascondemnatory ofHenryGeorge'ssystem,ledtothe excommunicationofRev.Dr.Edward McGlynn,ofNewYork,whowasasupporterofthatsystem.Now,Father McGlynnhadbeen"warned"concerninghisutterancesonthelandquestion asfarbackas1881,notablywhenhe tooktheplatformwithMichaelDavitt, whovisitedAmericain1882onbehalf ofHomeRuleandtheIrishLandLeague. FatherMcGlynn,consciousofhis right,heard,butdidnotheed,these "warnings,"andgavecauseformany more.Thenhewasorderedtoreport himselfatRome,buthedidnotobey thecommand.Finally,inJuly,1887, thebanofexcommunicationwasimposed.Itmustbenotedthattheban wasnotimposedonaccountofhisadvocacyoftheSingleTax,butbecause hedisobeyedtheordertoproceedto Rome,

Thebanremainedinforceforfour years.Then,MonsignorFranciscoSatoli,subsequentlycreatedaCardinal, visitingAmerica,clothedwithfull powersasPapalDelegate,openedthe caseofFatherMcGlynn,incollaborationwithfourDoctorsoftheCatholic UniversityatWashington.Theresult wastheliftingofthebanofexcommunication,andFatherMcGlynnwas restoredtohispriestlyofficejustprior toChristmas,1891.

Now,"Rerum.Novarum"wasissued atRomeonMay15,1891,soitcould nothaveleduptotheexcommunication,whichtookplacefouryearsearlier. Onthecontrary,asitsissuancewas followedsoshortlybyFather McGlynn'srestoration,itmightbe arguedthattheEncyclicalhadsomethingtodowiththathappyending.

Mr.HollissaysthattheSingleTax requiresthat"theoriginalvalueofthe land"behandedovertotheState.Not so.Itisproposedtoresume,for Statepurposes,thepresentrentalvalue ofthebareland,allimprovementstheproductsoflabour-beingexempt fromanylevy.

Inanobliqueway,Mr.HollissuggeststhatHenryGeorge'sprinciple aimedat"soakingoftherich.'That isnotso.Itisproposedtoplaceall menonanequalitywithregardto Nature'smaterialgifts-theearthand naturalforces-andtoabolishGovernmentalprivileges,Then,withjust conditionsestablished,nonewouldadvanceatthecostofhisneighbour,and wewouldnotseekto"getat"themore industrious,themoreprosperous. Theconcludingparagraphofthearticlemightbetakentorefertowhat theSingleTaxdiddo,orwhatitmight do.Thesystemhas,ofcourse,never

ThebodyofBlessedMargaretof Savoy,MarchionessofMontferrat,who diedin1464,hasbeenfoundinastate ofperfectpreservationattheopening ofhertombatAlba,Italy,statesRadio Vatican.Thetombwasbeingrepaired.Mothshadfoundanopeningin oneoftheglasspanelsofthecasket containingthebodyandwerethreateningtodamagethematerialwithwhich thebodyiscovered.BishopGrassi, ofAlba,presidedattheopeningofthe tomb.Aprofessorofanatomyfrom TurinUniversity,somenunsandafew otherpeoplewitnessedtheceremony.

HereshejoinedtheBenedictineOblateSisters,andspentsixhappyyears wholeheartedlydedicatedtotheChristianeducationofthegirlsofSt.Joseph'sOrphanage.When,in1931,it wasdecidedthatthreeoftheOblate Sistersshouldgoandsharewiththe BenedictineFathersthehardshipsof missionarylifeintheDrysdaleRiver Mission,SisterScholasticawasoverjoyedtolearnthatshewasoneofthe chosenthree.InAugustofthatsame year,theSistersmadetheirhomeat theDrysdaleMission,ThelateSisterwasappointedfirstSuperiorofthe littleCommunity,andremainedin chargeuntilMay,1938,whenthethree pioneerswererelievedbyanother bravetrioofOblateSistersfromNew Norcia.

SisterScholasticagaveherselfunreservedlytotheworkoftheMission. Shehadagreatwaywiththechildren, wholovedherdearly,andendeared herselfnolesstotheirparents.She neversparedherself,Sheprofited byherpositionasSuperiortoclaima righttodowhatevertaskwashardest ormostrepugnanttonature.Ever readyforworkandsacrifice,thelate Sisterrenderedinvaluableserviceto theMission.Itisnotunlikelythatin herardentdevotiontotheGreatCause sheneglectedherownhealth,for,soon afterherreturntoNewNorcia,inJune, 1938,thereappearedinherthefirst symptomsofthefataldiseasethathas carriedhertoanearlygrave.

Amostpatientsufferer,SisterScholasticawasaconstantsourceofedificationtoherSistersattheOrphanage. Similarly,attheHospitalofSt.John ofGod,Subiaco,whereshewasanin mateforfourmonths,herreadysmile, evenwheninacutepain,madeadeep impressiononthegoodSisterswho nursedherorvisitedher.Shewon theiradmirationbysufferingsomuch withouteverutteringawordofcomplaint.

BackinNewNorcia,andknowing hercasetobehopeless,thelateSister lookedDeathbravelyintheface,and keptherselfconstantlyinreadinessfor it.Whentheenddrewnearandher sufferingincreasedtoanunbearable point,shebeggedandobtainedfrom herspiritualdirector-oneoftheNew NorciaFathers-leavetoprayfor deathtocomenotlaterthantheFeast oftheImmaculateConception.Havingbeenbornonthatday,andhaving alwaysbeengreatlydevotedtoOur BlessedLady,shewasanxioustocelebrateher34th.birthdayinthecompanyofherImmaculateMother.Her prayerwasheard,andtheendcame evensoonerthanshehadexpected. OnthenightofThursday,4th.inst., shehadtheprayersforthedyingsaid forherbyherspiritualdirectorand theSisters.Shefollowedthemperfectly,for,thoughhardlyableto speakawordduringherlastfourhours, sheretainedfullconsciousnesstillthe lastmoment.Notlongaftermostof theSistershadretired,herpainsbecameexcruciating,andthenshewas heardtopronouncetimeandagainthe words"Takeme,"whichwereher prayertoOurBlessedLadytorelease hersoulfromtheprisonofherbody. Towardsmidnightherpainsceased andherbreathingbecameeasy,but speechwasimpossible.TheSisters weresummonedbacktothebedside oftheirdyingSister,andtheirprayers,

togetherwiththeministrationsofthe priest,helpedhertoawaitinthegreatestcalmandpeacethecomingofher DivineSpouse,whosecrucifiedimage shekissedmostdevoutlyasshebreathedherlast,shortlybeforemidnight.

ASolemnRequiemMassforthelate Sisterwascelebratedinthepro-Cathedralat9o'clockthesamemorning,in thepresenceofalargecongregation consistingmostlyofthepupilsofthe localCollegesandOrphanages,A somewhatsmallercongregationattendedthefuneralintheevening,whenthe deceasedSisterwaslaidtorestinthe Missioncemetery,wherewithsomany saintlymenandwomensheawaitsthe finalresurrection.Thesingingon bothoccasionswasperformedbythe BenedictineMonks'Choir,Inthe morningtheyrenderedatwo-partMass by0.Ravanella,andintheevening theychantedtheprescribedresponses, etc.,inGregorianmusic.

ThedeathofSisterScholastica, thoughnotunexpected,hasbeenkeenlyfeltbyallwhoknewher,butby nonesomuchasbytheReligiousCommunityofwhichshewasamostworthymember,andbythenativechildrenatNewNorciaandattheDrysdaleMission,towhosewelfaresheconsecratedherenergiessogenerously. Thegreatsorrowexperiencedatthe latterplaceisclearfromthefeelingly wordedmessagesofcondolencesentby theFatherstheretotheLordAbbot andOblateSistersatNewNorciaimmediatelyafterreceiptofthesadnews oftheSister'sdeath.

ButlerwasborninClarendon,South Australia,70yearsago.Comingtothe Goldfieldsin1895,heopenedabutcheringbusinessonthepresentsiteofthe KalgoorlieRacecourse.Hewasbought outwhenconstructionofthecourse wasundertaken.MovingtoBoutler, heopenedasimilarbusiness.In1911 heopenedanopen-airpictureshow andskatingrinkinBurt-street,later buildingthePalaceTheatreandGardens,whichheranformanyyears,and whichareatpresentleasedtothe GoldfieldsPicturesLtd.

Alwaysapublicspiritedman,Cr. Butlertookanactiveinterestinmunicipalaffairs.Hisassociationwiththe BoulderMunicipalCouncilgoesback to1912. Hewaslargelyresponsible fortheformationoftheBoulderRatepayers'Association,andastheirrepresentativewaselectedtothecouncil. TrottingwasthesporttowhichCr. Butlerwasmostattracted.Hewasa lifememberofboththeWestAustralianTrottingAssociationandtheGoldenMileClub,andwasvice-presidentof theGoldenMileClubandfoundation memberoftheoriginalclub,andtook aninterestinthereconstructionofthe newclub.Healsoracedandbred manytrotters.Hewasanactive memberofAllHallows'Church,the HolyNameSociety,andH.A.C.B.S.

AfterRequiemMasshisremainswere t,restintheBoulderCemetery. Anotherfavouritewas"WhenI'ma Man,"whichwasgivenbysevenlittle lads. Themainfeatureoftheconcertwas theoutstandingperformanceofthe GymnasiumSquad,theeldestboyin whichwasonlyabout11yearsold. Theyperformedamazinglywell,especiallyinthemovementwheretheyliterallyflewthroughthehoop.ThisexcellentperformancereflectsgreatcreditontheBrotherswhotrainedthese youngboyssowell.

Inkeepingwiththefestiveseason, alittleEnglishboygaveaverysweet renditionofthetraditionalChristmas carol,"StillNight,HolyWight."The hallwasdecoratedwithnationalpennantsinpatrioticcolours.andpresent. edaverystrikingappearance. Itcannotbedeniedthattheopeningphasesofthewarinthe PacifichavegonebadlyagainstusandthattheJapanesethreatto Singaporeisveryreal.Thewarhas,moreover,revealedinAustraliaandinothercentresofactualconflictastateofunpreparednesswhich,aftertheexperienceoftwoyearsoftotalwarinEurope,issimplyincomprehensible.However,thatsubjecthas beenthefocusofacrimoniouspoliticaldebate,andwedonotproposetoaddtoitsbitternessandfutility.Recriminationforpast errorsiscriminalfollyforthereisonlyonetaskbeforeeveryAustralian-tomakewhatwecanofourresourcesinthetimeleftto us.TheAustralianisnotoriouslylethargicaboutpublicaffair:, andwhileattachedtopersonalindependence,hascaredalltoolittle aboutnationalindependence.Wheneveracrisisoccurredinpubliclife,theaveragecitizeninthiscountryinevitablyasked:"What istheGovernmentgoingtodoaboutit?"

Thefullperilofthisattitudeisonlynowapparent.Inthe fieldofinternationalpolitics,theAustraliancitizenandhispoliticalleaders,too,forthatmatterhavesmuglyreliedfordomesticdefenceontheBritishNavyandthepoweroftheUnitedStates.The JapaneseBlitzhasalteredallthat.Britainhaslosttwobattleships uponwhichtheeffectivedefenceofMalayalargelydepended. whileinthelandoffensivetheJapanesehaveindisputableairsuperiority.Americahassufferedtragicallynotonlyfromasmashing blowtothestrengthofherPacificfleet,butalsointhelossor cripplingofvitalairandnavalbases.Sorealdoessheregardthe threattoherownWesterncoast,thatresponsibleAmericanpoliticianshaveasmuchastoldAustraliashemuststandonherown feetandthatshecannotcountonAmericanaid.Iftheeffectof allthisistobringhometoourcountrythegenuineisolationin whichwestand,itwillhavedonegreatgoodandshouldbring fortharemarkablewareffort.AlreadythePrimeMinisterhas spokenoftheneedof"self-sufficiency."

Whiletheenlistmentratehasgreatlyimproved,andinsome casestrebled,thisisnotparticularlyhearteninginviewofthe verypoorfigurespriortothePacificoutbreak.Therearestilltoo manymeninreservedoccupations,andtoomanyintheadministrativesideofthearmyitself.Thereisneed,moreover,ofaclarificationofthepositionasbetweenA.I.F.andMilitia.Mr.MenziesoriginallydeclaredthatAustralia'sfrontierwasontheRhine. LateritshiftedtotheMediterranean,andatpresentitappearsto beinNorthAfrica,Palestine,andSyria.ItshouldgreatlystimulaterecruitingifthePrimeMinisterwoulddefinetheboundaries ofAustraliandefence.Thereisalsoverylittlerealisationofwhat Mr.Curtinhassaidwillcausearevolutioninourevery-daylives. Thespiritofpleasureandirresponsibilityisalltoopainfullyobvious.Ifpeoplewillnotvoluntarilycurtailluxuryspendingthere canbenoobjectiontoGovernmentalcompulsion.Quiteapart fromthewar.thereisnodoubtthatAustraliawasbeingsoftened byitswayoflife.Thesacrificesandhardshipofarealwareffort willbeproductiveofnothingbutgood.

AnaspectofthewarwhichmustvitallyconcernCatholicsis thepreservationoftheFaith.Itshouldbetothemquiteasimportantasnationalsurvival.Forinthehorribleeventofdefeat andofAustralia'spassingintosubjugationunderaforeignpower, theFaithwouldstillhavetobepreservedandpropagated,for whilenationsandempiresdie,theFaithmarchesontotheendof time.Australiaisalargelypaganisedcountryandithasbeen difficultatalltimestolivethefullCatholiclife.Butinwar-time itissupremelydifficult.Homesaredisorganised,marriagesindefinitelypostponed,andtheconfined,comfortlesslifeofcamp tendstohavereactionsinabandonmenttopleasure?Moreover,the vastareaofourcountrytobedefendedwillmakethesupplyingof chaplainsamostdifficultproblem.ThiswillbethetestinggroundofCatholicAction.CanitpreservetheFaithduringthe war?Hasitproducedleaderswho,oftentimesaloneandderided. willdaretobedifferentasChristwasdifferent?Thisisthetask beforeus-topersevereinChristaswehopetosurviveasanation.

Underidealrunningconditionsand inthepresenceofalargegatheringof supporters,theC.Y.M.S.athleticteams performedsplendidlyatLeederville OvalonSaturday,December13,again winningtwooutofthethreegrades.

Althoughseveralofourprominent athleteswereunabletoattend,those participatingintheteamspulledtheir weightingrandstyleandsurmounted difficultiesinthetraditionalC.Y.M.S. manner.Themostnoticeablefeature oftheafternoon'ssportwasthedeterminationandfightingspiritinwhich ourathletestookpart.Thiswasparticularlynoticeableintheperformances oftheoldermembersoftheclub,and itwouldbewelliftheyoungermemberstookparticularnoticeandcultivatedthatsamespiritwhichwillhelp themovergreatoddsinallwalksof life. Allmembersofthe"C"gradeare againcongratulatedontheirfineeffort inwinningbyalargemargin.This teamhascomeintoitsownnow,and henceforthshouldholditsownagainst anyteam.The"B"gradeteamis alsotobecongratulatedagainonits win.Thisteamshouldhavenodifficultyinagainwinningtheshieldthis season.Asseveralmembersofthe "A"gradeteamscoreincapacitated andotherswereunabletoattend,the teamdidnotdotoowell,butunder thecircumstancesnothingelsecouldbe expected.Theindividualresultswere:

OnSunday,November30,theSt. Gertrude'sEx-CollegiansAssociation (NewNorcia)helditsannualgeneral meetingatSt.Joseph'sConvent,South Perth,Discussionwasheldonthe year'sactivitiesandgeneralsatisfactionwasexpressed.TheCollegeTennisCourthasbeenalmostcompletely cleared,therebeingnowonlyavery smallbalanceoutstanding.TheannualCabaret-acombinedeffort-at theCarltondrewalargecrowd,and wasquitesuccessful,theprofitbeing £615s7d,whichwasdonatedtothe C.W.O.TheHighTeaatSt.Joseph's Conventwasalsowellattended,despitetheintenseheatonthatday.Duringtheyear,also,therewasareunionatNewNorcia.Thiswasheld inconjunctionwiththeOldBoys'Association,andwasvotedatremendous success.Opportunitywastakent,

Theyear1941hasbeenaparticularlyactiveandsuccessfulonefortheexstudentsofSt.Joseph'sConvent,Fremantle.Thefirstsocialeventofthe yearwastheannualsportsdayandexstudents'reunion,whichwereheldon May24,the86th,anniversaryofthe landingofthepioneerSistersway backin1855.LaterinJulywasheld theannualball,whichwasanunprecedentedsuccess,bothsociallyandfinancially,over£215profitbeingmade. Asusual,debutanteswerepresented toHisGracetheArchbishop,towhom theex-studentsareverygratefulfor hisinterestandsupport.Tothe ladies'suppercommitteeallofwhom areeitherpaststudentsormothersof paststudents,adeepdebtofgratitude isowed,astheentirecateringarrangementsarecarriedoutfreeofanycost whatsoever.Andwhenthisentails alsotheprovision,preparationand servingofsuppertothechildrenat theirballalsoonthefollowingevening,oratotalofwellover1,200people, themagnitudeoftheirtask,socheerfullyandablyperformed,canberealised.

InSeptemberweheldourfirst annualenclosedRetreat,whichowed itssuccesstotheeffortsofRev.Father Cowan,O,M.I.,andtothecareexercisedbytheSistersinmakingtheaccommodationarrangementsonsucha lavishscale.

InOctoberaneventuniqueinthe annalsoftheChurchinthisStatetook place,whentheGoldenJubileeoftwo formerMotherSuperiorsoftheCon. venttookplace,inconjunctionwith theSilverJubileeoffourothermembersofthecommunity.AttheGardenPartyheldonSunday,October26, overthreehundredparticipating,many ofthemhavinglongassociationwith theSisters-inonecasedatingasfar backas1883.Thereligiouspartof thecelebrationsontheMondaywas equallywellattended,andweare deeplygratefultoAlmightyGodthat HechoseourAlmaMaterforthissign ofHisfavour.

Thefinalfunctionoftheyeartook placeonSundaylast,14th,inst.,atthe Conventat3p.m.,whenaninformal re-unionandafternoonteawasheld.

TheexecutiveoftheAssociation, wishestothankallthosewhobypersonalserviceorgiftshavehelpedto makeouryearsosuccessfulfrom everypointofview.To"TheRecord"theyextendverydeepestappreciationforitsunfailingcourtesyand co-operation.TooneandallweextendourbestwishesthattheChristmasseasonwillbeasholyandhappy aspossible,andthatwiththenew year,thedarkcloudsofwarwhich hangsoperilouslyclosetouswillsoon bedispelled,sothatinthelightofa justpeacewemaygoforwardtogether inthepathsoftruthandhappiness.
