FlorentinoAsensioBarroso,Titular BishopofEureadiEpiroandApostolicAdministratorofBarbastro,addressedtohisRedexecutionersbefore hewasshotonJuly31,1936,afterseven daysoftorture."MyLord,Jesus Christ,trueGodandtrueMan,"the Bishophadcommencedtopray,buta volleyendedhisprayerandhislifeand hisbodydroppedintotheditchthat hadbeenpreparedforit.
Barbastro,thenobleandancientcity oftheQueenofAragon,wasthescene oftheveryworsttypeofCommunist impiousness.Theturretsofitscastles andthetowersofitscentennialchurchesstillstand,buteverybuildingfromthesmallestshoptothelargest warehouse,aswellaschurchesandpublicbuildings-hadbeenthoroughly sacked-Allthatremainedinthecity weremountainsofobscenebooksand CommunistpropagandawhichtheNationalisttroopsburnedinthestreets aftertheircaptureofthecity.
AllPriestsArrested.
OnJuly19,1936,Colonel,laterGeneral,Vilialba,enteredthecityatthe headofagroupofworkersbelongingto theC.N.T.andtheF.A.I.Theytook possessionofthebarracksandthe munitionstores,andthusarmedcowed thecitizensintosubmission.Aplatoon,accompaniedbyahowlin'-mob, rushedtotheBishop'sresideitr,and, whilethemobstonedthe4/se,the platoonarrestedtheprelate,and,pushinghimforwardwiththebuttsoftheir guns,amidinsultsandblasphemies, tookhimtotheConventoftheEscolapianFathers,whichwasconvertedinto aprison.Therewere40Escolapian alreadyimprisonedthere,andtothis numberwereaddedtheBenedictines, theMissionariesoftheSacredHeartof Marv.andallthepriestsofthecity. Therewereseveralhundredinall.The guardssubjectedthemtopitilessinsultsandtorments.
Meanwhiletherestofthemobwas busysackingthechurches,particularly theCathedral,which,theythought, wouldrenderagreatreturn.Truckloadsofjewelledchalices,vestments, ornamentsandancienttapestriesof greatvalueweretakentoBarcelona, andbyJuly26allthechurcheswere completelydespoiledbutthefamous
"jovero"-thegreattreasurethatduringcenturiesthekings,princesand faithfulhadgiventotheCathedralas votiveofferings-wasstillmissing.The fameoftheBarbastrotreasurewassuch thattheRedsknewthatitwaswell worthfinding,andtheysearchednot onlytheCathedral,buttheentirecity, thinkingitmightbeconcealedinsome privatehome.
Whenallothereffortswerevain, theybeganexcavatingundertheCathedral.Dayandnighttheyworked withpicksandshovels,tearingdown wallsandtearingupfloors.Covetousnessdrovethemon,butwhentheybecamewearywithsomuchworkand noreward,theCommunistmayor, JoseSeco,orderedthattheRightistsbe broughtfromtheprisonsandputto work.Theylaboured16hoursdailyatthepointsofpistols.Eventually theycameuponanancientnecropolis andwereforcedtoprofaneitstombs. Dust,ashes,bones-butnothingmore. Thetreasurewasnotfound.Whetherit waseverfound,oreverwillbefound, isnotknown.Somesayyes,andthat itprovedtobeworth80,000,000pesos.
GoWithoutWater. Deathmusthavebeenarelieftothe agedBishop.Thereweredayswhen theprisonerswerenotevengivenwater. 'Ontheseventhdaytheguardtoldthe prelatescornfully:"Prepareyourself forto-nightwearegoingtotakeyou for;walk."
Thatafternoonthewine-cellar:and tavernshadbeencleanedout.Wine andotherintoxicantsruledthecity. Meanwhileintheprison,theBishor andhispriestswereprayingfervently, preparingfortheirmartyrdom.At1 a.m.,theBishopsaidtohiscompaaions:"Mysons,Iamgoingtogoieyou mylastblessingandthenweshallcelebrate,asdidJesuswithHisDiiciples, ourlastsupper."Manybeganto weep."Donotweep,"headded."We mustpardonourenemies.Theyknow notwhattheydo."
At2a.m.asquadenteredtheprison. BishopAsensiotookalastlookathis clergy,thensaidtohisexecutioners: "LKusgo."
ThestreetsofBarbastrowereresoundingwiththecriesofdebauchery. Atroopoflewdwomenhadarrived fromBarcelona.Onenotoriouscharacter,knownas"LaPeruse,"waswavingherpistolandboastingofthenumberofpeopleshehadkilled.And
throughthisseethingmobofdrunks andprostitutes,theBishopwasledto thecemetery.Theymadehimstand besidehisyawninggrave.
Adisgustingandsacrilegiousritewas enactedafterthebodyhadfalleninto thegrave.Beforereturningtothe citytoresumetheirorgyofblood,wine, voluptuousnessandpillage,theyparodiedareligiousserviceforthedeadchantingthe"Internationale"inimitationofliturgy.

Onsuccessivedaysotherprisoners werekilledinlikefashion.Ofallthe priestsofthediocese,onlyfiveescaped withtheirlives,Butonthewallsof theEscopalianConvent,usedastheir prison,onemayreadthemessagesthat theyleftbehind:"Letusforgiveour enemies,""ThebloodofChristiansis theseedofmartyrs,"andlikeinscriptionswhichreflectthetrulyChristian
spiritthatBishopAsensiohadinspired inhispriests.
Morethan700RightistswereexecutedatBarbastro.Oneoftheworsttorturerswasknownas"ElZapatillas." Hevisitedhishatredevenuponthe bodiesofhisvictims.Theyweredenieddecentburial;theirfamiliesand friendscouldnotreclaimthemlater, for"ElZapatillas"buriedthempiled upinthesameditchandsprinkled onicklimeoverthetop.Forthisreasonheearnedanothernickname:"El Enterrador"-theUndertaker.
Whenthelastgroupwasbeingtaken fromtheprison,fourofthem-onea priest-refusedtoleave.Wepreferto diehereifwemust,"theysaid,"but wewillnotgo."Theywereshot.
AsinallthecitiestakenintheNationalistadvance,thechurchesofBarbastrowerefoundtobewithouteverythingthatisusedinservices;not evenacandlewasleft.Fortunately thereredosoftheCathedral,whichis veryartistic,wasnotdisturbed.But thetombsoftheBishopsofBarbastro weretheobjectsofspecialvandalism. Thereisnotonethatescapeddestructionandprofanation.

Nowtheystandinunshakenunity. ThesecondreasonIgiveforthepreservationoftheirfreedomisthisunity, athingwhichwasdeplorablyabsentin everyoneofthepresentvanquished countriesofEurope.ItseemsespeciallysurprisingamongtheSwisswho arecomposedsincetheNapoleonic WarsnotonlyoftheoriginalSwiss, butalsoofFrenchandItalians.But theforeignermustrememberthatthese descendantsofItalianandFrenchrefusetobeanythingbutSwiss.Swiss theyallare,andSwisstheyremain.
Sofarweseethattheenemy'schief weapons,threatsandfifthcolumns, havenotworstedtheSwiss.The enemyhasnotsucceededingaining controlofthetunnelsbyhissubversiveactivities.Thetunnelsindeed wouldbenoprotectiontotheindependence,ifthecountrywerenot unitedfromwithin.Howquickly FranceandNorwayfell,becausethe enemyhadhisagentsinkeypositions! Switzerlandwouldlongagehaveshared thesamefateifshehadsufferedfrom thesamelackofpatrioticunity.
OnNovember15,1940,aSwisstotalitariangroupknowsasthe"SwissNationalMovement"hadtheimpudence todeliveraso-called"ultimatum"to theGovernment,demandingtheright todisseminatepartypropagandaand the"rehabilitationofpersecutedand imprisoned"colleagues.Thegroup wasnotstrongnumerically,butneutralforeignobserverswereworriedas totheeffectoftheactiononthepositionofSwitzerland.Theeffectwas thepromptdissolutionofthegroupby theFederalCouncilonNovember19, 1940.
General-in-ChiefGuisandoesnothesitatetoarrestwherejustified.Even SwissnotablessuchasColonelFonjallez,thebob-sledchampion,andColonel HansTrueb,ofthearmylegaldepartment,havefallenundertheheavy handoftheGovernment.Saboteurs arecondemnedtolifeimprisOnmentat hardlabour.
AModelArmy.
TheSwissrecognisethenine-hundredyear-oldcompulsorymilitarytraining tobethetruebasisfordemocracy. Theirselectiveservicehasbuilta modelarmyupontheglorioustraditionsoftheSwissfightersofthepast: ofArnoldofWinkelried,ofthetroops hiredbyFerdinandandIsabella,ofthe SwissguardofLouisXVI,andofall theothers.
Fromthebeginningoftheirstruggle withAustriaforindependence,the Swissbecametheterrorofintruders. AfterconqueringCharlestheBold,the greatestwarriorofhistime,theywere called"themastersofmodernwarfare."EmperorMaximilianI.modelledhisinfantryafterthem.

Inspiteoftheirfinearmyandtheir fightingspirit,however,theSwisscould hardlyhavemaintainedindependence solongwithouttheirbusinessacumen, the'fourthsupportoftheirfreedom. TheSwisscangovernthemselvesvery adequately.Theyinhabitaland whichisalmostbarrenofthenecessitiesoflife,Inpreservingtheirfreedomtheyhavenotonlydisplayedbraverybutalsoingenuity.
Theyhaveestablishedacommerce whichtheymanipulatetoenormous profits.Therawmaterialstheymust importaremanufacturedandexported,equallingthoseofEngland,BelgiumandHollandinquality.The Swissmachineindustryisworld-renowned,nottomentionthechocolate, silkandcheeseindustries.Wagesin Switzerlandarehigh,andthestandard oflivingisadmirable.
OnApril9,1941,theFederalCouncil decreedthattheSwissflag,forthe
Andnow,intheyearthatmarksthe sixhundredandfiftiethanniversaryof theirindependence,theSwisstreasure thesecretoftheirfreedom:theirpiety, theirunity,theirarmy,theirbusiness ability.Theircourageisinspiredby theirfaithinGod,theirloveoffreedom,andtheirsuccessfuldefenceof libertydownthroughthecenturies.
TheSwisslookbacktothefounding oftheir"EverlastingLeague"in1921. Theylookbackoncenturiesoftenaciousfighting,ofeconomicdevelopment andrisetowealthfromalmost nothing;theylookbackontheformationoftheirnationalcharacter.
Theylookaheadtonewstruggles,to newsacrifices.Buttheyareprepared tomakethemforthefreedomthey lovesodearly.

daysinwilddancing.Therewasno lawororder,andnooneworkedany morethanhehadto.Thelepersfelt thattheyweregoingtodiesoonanyway,sotheymightaswellhaveagood timewhiletheycould.
FatherDamienfirstbuiltachurch, forhefeltthatthethingthesepeople neededmostwasreligion.Hewanted toteachthemhowtofacedeathas ChristiansButhealsowantedto showthemhowtolivelikecivilised people,sohetriedtoteachthemalso howtokeepclean,andbuildbetter houses,andplantgardens.Hebuilt aschoolforboys,andsoonlooked aboutforSisterswhowouldtakecare ofthegirlsandwomen. InthemeantimeapriestfromHawaii wasintheUnitedStates,lookingfor SistersfortheleperhospitalinHonolulu.Hehappenedtospeaktothe FranciscanSistersofSyracuse,New York,wherehefoundwhathehadbeen lookingfor.TheProvincialSuperior, MotherMarianne,andsixothersvolunteered.Hecouldhardlyhavegota betterrecruitthanMotherMarianne, forshehadhadchargeofthehospital inSyracuse,andknewagreatdeal aboutthework.
OnNovember8,1885,theboatcarryingtheSistersenteredtheharbourat Honolulu.TheSistersweremetby Hawaiianofficials,andafewdayslater wereintroducedtotheQueenherself. Theirworkwasbegunatonce.The leperhospitaljustoutsidethecitywas inaboutasbadshapeasaplacecould wellbe.Therewereovertwohundredpatients-menandwomenofall ages.Thefoodwascookedandservedbylepers;therewerenomedicines, nolights;buttherewasplentyofdirt, andrats-ratsbythehundreds.The firstjobwastocleanup,andtheSisterssettoworkwithawill.When thiswasdonetheycouldseetoitthat thepatientshadbetterfood,andthat rightcarewastakenofthem.But MotherMariannewasnotsatisfiedwith justthesethings.Therewasmuch moretobedone-thereweresomany children,whoseparentswerelepers, whohadtobetakencareof.Shesaw toitthataschoolwasopenedforthem, and,ofcourse,theSistershadtotake careofthattoo.
InherfiveyearsinHonoluluMother MariannehadvisitedMolokaiandhad heardthelepersaskforSisterstoopen ahomeforleperwomen.FatherDamienhadspentsometimeatthehospitalinHonoluluandhadtalkedabout theSistersgoingtotheisland.In1888 MotherMariannewasaskedbythe HawaiianGovernmentwhethershe couldgiveanyhelptoMolokai.Her answerwasthatshecould-thatshe wouldgoherselfandtaketwoSisters withher.
InNovember,then,theywent,with aboatloadoflepers.Ahomehad beenbuiltforthem,butwhenthey reachedittheyfoundthatnowellhad beendug.Itwasdecidedthatwater wouldbesentfrommilesawayinbarrels,andthattheywouldhavetowait alongtimeintheheatforadrink. ButthiswasnothingtotheSisters. TheyhadnotcometoMolokaiforcomfort,anditiswellthattheydidnot, fortheyneverhadit.
MotherMariannewasbusyatmany things.Thebuildingswerenotall theyshouldhavebeen,soshesetabout havingthemfixed.Shewasinterested ingardening,anddidherbesttomake thegroundsasbeautifulaspossible. Shefelt,too,thatitwouldbegoodfor theleperwomentoworkout-of-doorsitwouldgivethemsomethingtothink aboutbesidestheirsickness.Then therewasthenursingtobedone,and thewomenhadtobetaughttocarefor themselvesandtheirchildren.And throughitalltherewerethesickening sightandsmelloflepers-peoplewho
wererottingawaywhilestillalive. MotherMariannewasnotworriedabout herselforherSisters.Oneofthem didaskwhatwouldhappenifthey shouldbecomelepers,butMotherMariannetoldhersimplytokeepclean,to becarefulofherfood,andnottoworry, "God,"shesaid,"willprotectus.Do notletthethoughttroubleyou.You willneverbealeper,norwillanySisterofourOrder."Uptonowherpredictionhascometrue."-"TheLittle Missionary."
Inanopenlettertoanthropologists whohaveexpressedindignationthat theNazishaveattackedtheDarwinian theoryofevolution,thestaffof"The Queen'sWork,"thenationalorganof theSodalityofOurLady,intheUnitedStates,pointsoutDarwiniantheoristsshouldpinmedalsontheHitlerites,commenting:

Thedistinguishingcharacteristicsof thetrueChristianworship,asindicated inverses21and23,arethatitistobe universal,notlocallyorraciallyrestrictedliketheJewishorSamaritan worship;andthatitistobespiritual -offeredwithheartsanimatedbyfaith andgrace,andnotconsistingmerely inexternalrites.

THE"SIMPLE"TEACHING. he(myfriend)saidtherewasafar ciybettyeenthesimpleteachingof Ltnistandthelavishceremonialof theChurchofRome.
ChristOurLordtaughtsimply:asa ruleinsimplelanguage;forIlewasthe Teacherparexcellence.Butmuch thatHetaughtwasnotsimple,nor easytounderstand.Themanwho saysthattheteachingofChristwas simplehasneverstudiedHisteaching. Withoutknowingit,yourfriendwas merelyrepeatingthecantandclaptrap whichwasfashionableyearsagowhen thetheoriesofmodernistswereagood dealmoremodernthantheyaretoday.
IntheteachingofChrist,asrecorded intheGospels,thereismuchthatis enigmaticandobscure;muchthatis unexpectedandseeminglyparadoxical. ThereareDivineTruthswhosedepths ofwisdomandbeautycanneverbe soundedbythefinitemindofman.
AsG.K.Chestertonwrote:"Aman simplytakingthewordsofthe(Gospel)storyastheystandwouldform animpressionfullofmysteryand possiblyofinconsistency. inthefirstplace,theobjectionis based,aswehaveseen,onafalsein. terpretationoftheteachingofChristaninterpretationopposedtotheteachingandpracticeofChristHimself,His ApostlesandHisChurchthroughall ages.
Secondly,itisbasedontheirrational theoryofLiberalism,whichholdsthat religionisexclusivelyaprivatematter, andhasnoplaceinpubliclife,and shouldnotbepubliclymanifestedor displayed;whichisoneofthosehalfmithswhichareworsethanlies.
Religionisaninteriorandprivate affair.Butitisalsoapublicand socialduty.Publicworshipwhichwe owetoGodastheAuthorandLordof Societynaturallytakestheformof ritualorceremonialworship.
TobepleasingtoGod,ritualworship mustbe,notmerelyexternal,butexpressiveofthefaithandloveofthe worshippers.
ThedepthandrichnessofCatholic belieffindsfittingexpressioninthe Catholicliturgy.Theceremonialrites ofCatholicworshipexpressthebelief andtheloveofCatholicsasabody. Andthisritualworshipisincomplete harmonybothwiththeteachingof Christandnaturalandnormalhuman instincts,
Byritesandceremonies,religionis adaptedtotheneedsofmenwhoare conditionedtosolargeanextentby thesenses,andaresodependentupon visibleandtangiblemanifestationsof spiritualrealities.

MonsignorIlayes,onrisingtorespond,wasreceivedwithgreatenthusiasm.Hesaidthatitwasasheer delightforhimtobeabletoattend thisCommunionbreakfast.liehad beenjustover39yearsintheWest withouthavingbeenabletoparticipate fullyinaHibernianCommunionbreakfast.Hehadattendedafewbuthe hadalwayshadtotenderhisapologies andleaveearly.Thisisafinesight forhimtosee,comingupfromthe country.Hehadlethismindrun alonghismemoriesandexperiencesof theHibernianSocietysincehecame herein1902,andtheconclusionthat hehadcometowasthis:thattheSocietymustbearemarkablywellbalancedSocietyanditIT111.5tbesingularlysuitabletotheAustralianCatholic. Therearetwothingsthatwemustall do.Oneistoorderourlivesthatwe shallsecurethemercyofGod'slove afterwepassthroughthegatesof death,andthenextisthatwemust livethelivesofgoodcitizens:thatwe mustbepatrioticandthatwemu, dotheverybestwecanforourfellow men.ThatmorningthemembersassembledattheHigh'Altarandhad theprivilege,inabody,ofreceiving HolyCommunion.Thereisnodoubt aboutthefaithofthemembersofthis Society.YourSociety,beingwellbalanced,asafriendlysocietyithasto dowithmoneysandithasdonethat dutyverywell.Itisverypopular withotherfriendlysocieties,because itiscomposedofmenandwomenof commonsense,Theyarenotsickly butheartymenandwomen.They arecheerfulanddonotwearlongfaces, andperhapsabovealltheykeepto theirpaces.The39yearsthathehad knowntheSocietyithadprogressed: onandonitgoes,andsoitisthatthe Churchisproudofit:andtheChurch willneverhaveanybodyelsetotake itsplace.Hesaidhewouldgivean exampleofthetypeofmanwhohas alwaysconstitutedthisSociety.The yearafterSt.Mary'sChurchatKalgoorliewasbuilt,aMissionwasheld there,andinthetowntherewasafine branchoftheHibernianSociety.On thelastSaturdaynightoftheMission everymanwastheretoprepareforhis Communionandthechurchwasfull. TheHibernianswentoutsidetowait andtheyweresittingalongthewall ofthechurch.Theyincludedtwoprominentmembers,ConDolanandMick Dwyer.Theywerehavingalong waitand,withcharacteristicwit,Con movedamotionthatMickshouldgoin andgotoconfessionforthewholeof them.ThatisthespiritthathasanimatedtheSociety.TheMonsignor concludedbysavingthattheChurchis entirelysatisfiedwiththeSociety,and expressingthehopethatitmaykeep onitschosentrack,MayGodbless you.)(Prolongedapplause.)

LackingasyetanyofficialSaintsofourownbloodandstock,the charactersandlaboursofXavierappealverystronglytotheCatholicmindinAustralia,forinthisgreatestmissionaryinChristianhistoryextraordinaryapostolicendeavourwascombinedwith thecultivationoftheinteriorlifewhichwasatonceitssourceand itsinspiration.ThehappyflexibilityoftheJesuitconstitutions moreoverenabledXaviertocarryouthisapostolatewiththatinitiativeandfreshnessofmethodwhichmakeshimsoattractiveto themodernismofto-day.Hefiresparticularlytheimagination oftheyoung,forhislifeisrepletewithadventure,impetuosity,and acompletegenerousimmolationofselfinthecauseofChrist.This hasbecomeincreasinglytruewiththeadvanceofCatholicAction inAustralia,forastheeviloftheworldincreasessotheCatholic lifedrivesdeeperanddeepertowithstandit.Greatergenerosity, moreself-sacrifice,aredemanded,andtosuchaspiritofchallenge theardentflameofyoutheagerlyreachesout.Tolivedangerouslyto-dayistobeaCatholic,forthefull-bloodedCatholic,life ismorefulloflabour,ofrisk,andyetmorerepletewithprospect ofspiritualconquestthaneverbefore.
TheFeastofSt.FrancisXavierislikeanoteofreveilleinCatholicAction.Truethemovementhascommenced,hasgathered impetus,andgivenpromiseofbringingforthverymuchfruit.But itwillneverbecompleteuntilitisall-embracing,forCatholicActionisnotthesoleprerogativeofyouth,becauseitisCatholiclife aimingtoembraceinthemysticalbodyofChristeverybaptised soul.InthemeantimetheworldoutsidetheChurchdriftsfarther andfartherfromthedoctrinesandthewayoflifepreachedand livedbyChristOurLord,andfinallythegreatcalamityofwarhas comeuponChristendom.Andwhileoneapprehendswithanxiety thefearfulspiritualaftermaththatfollowsinthewakeofwar,to theapostleitisalsoamilieuofintensepossibilitiesforgood.The heartbreak,thedisillusion,thecynicism,thedespairofpost-war periodsisauniqueopportunityforanyonewithaconstructiveidea. Andwhatalternativeafterallisthereforthenextgenerationapart fromCatholicism(whichcansatisfyallthatisbestinhumanaspiration)?Onallsidesthereishope,howeverirrational,ofanew orderarisingoutofthisconflict,socialreconstructionofcommunitiesandnations.HowmucheasierallthiswouldhetorealiseifAustraliaenjoyedacommonreligiousbeliefandasingle philosophyoflife.True,thesocialreconstructionenvisagedby theChurchproceedsfrompremisesofpurereason,buteventhese havebeenvitiatedbyreligiouserrorandstillmorebyindifferentismwhichissooftencalledtolerance.
TherecurringFeastofXaviershouldthenbetheoccasionfor therecallingtoAustralianCatholicmindsnotonlyofthetremen dousresponsibilitiesthatfalluponthemasCatholicsnormally,but ofthetremendousincreaseinthese,duetothecircumstancesof thetimes,andshouldbeawarningagainstcomplacency,andthat temptationwhich,thoughprevalent,iscompletelyforeigntothe Catholicoutlook,thatis,thattheFaithisaprivateconcern,and thattheCatholicobligationfinisheswiththeefforttosaveone's ownsoul.Faiththatisnotapostolicincharacterverysoondeclinesanddies,becauseFaithworkeththroughcharity.Faithis dynamic,itmustradiate,andthisbringsustothequestionofhow onecangivetheFaithtoothers,underGod,ifitdoesnotsuperaboundinourownmindsandhearts.Personalholinessisthena prerequisiteoftheapostoliclife,fornoone,asthelatePopedeclared,cangivewhathedoesnotposse-s.Thetime.moreover,is ripefortheconversionofAustralia.Thenationalcharactercom,binedwiththetraditionsofdecayedLiberalismhaslargelyuprootedpositivereligiousantagonism,butithasmadeatthesame timeforreligiousindifference,atypeofspiritualdolcefaniente. 'Thisatmosphereofvagueness,uncertaintyanddoubtisamilieu pregnantwithpossibilities.Itisagoldenopportunityforthe ChurchinAustraliaandwemustseizeit.Fortheconversionof Australiatotheonetruefoldwouldgreatlyfacilitatebothsocial andeconomicreformswhichthemassofthepeoplesoardentlydesire.Itisourgreatnationalresponsibility,withtheaidofSt. FrancisXavier,tomakethiscountrythesouthernlandoftheHoly Spirit.

TheSewingGuildoftheHighgate branchoftheCatholicWomen'sLeagueheldtheirdisplayofsummergarmentsintheParishHallonWednesday,November26.Thehallwas crowdedwithmembers,friendsand well-wishersoftheLeague.Theeveningtooktheformofasocial.Thegarmentswereattractivelydisplayedon tablesattheendofthehall.The largenumberandexcellentqualityof thegarmentsgavemembersoftheLeagueeveryreasontobeproudoftheir work.Averypleasanthourofentertainmentfollowedtheinspectionofthe display. Mrs.O'Sullivan,Presidentofthe Highgatebranch,receivedMrs.Maxwell,theGeneralPresidentoftheLeague.Mrs.O'Sullivanoutlinedvery; clearlytheplanwhichhadbeenfollowedintheestablishmentofthesewing guild,andtheworkwhichhadbeen doneduringthepastfewmonths.The garmentswouldnow'behandedover fordispatchtotheair-raidvictims overseas,andsomewouldbekeptto assisttheSt.VincentdePaulSociety intheirworklocally.
Mrs.Maxwellcongratulatedthe branchontheirexcellentworkandcooperationinassistingthecentral branchtosendhelpoverseas.Nearly 1,400garmentshadbeendispatched onlyrecently,andanotherconsignment wasbeingprepared.Mrs.Maxwell spokebrieflyofmanyotheraspectsof theworkoftheLeagueandexpressed gratificationatthecontinuedincrease inmembershipoftheHighgatebranch.
Mr.Coughlin,PresidentoftheParticularCounciloftheSt.Vincentde PaulSociety,andMr.H.Gallagher,a memberoftheCentralCouncil,were alsopresent.Mr.CoughlinspokehighlyoftheassistancewhichtheSt.VincentdePaulSocietywasreceivingfrom theCatholicWomen'sLeague.Heexpressedthehopethattheworkofthe sewingguildswouldcontinuetogrow.

FranceandBritainbothmissedthe lessonofCambrai,butGermanylearnedit."TheGermanGeneralStaff,as aresultoftheirhistoricalstudies,becameaware,"writesCaptainKutz,"thatthetank,ifnotheldtothepace offootinfantry,presentedpotentialitiesofarmouredmobilitythatwould permitthereintroductionofGenghis Khan'slightningwarmethods."In otherwords,theGermans,insteadof followingtheFrenchtacticsofslowing upthetankstosuittheinfantry,accleratedtheinfantrytosuitthetanks byputtingthemalsoonwheels. Dreaming,likedrinking,isalrightif indulgedinmoderately,butit'sall wrongwhenitencroachesonlife. 1 saythisbecauseweCatholicsasarule havethebadhabitofdreamingmost ofthetime;dreamingperhapsthatwe canachieveanythingwithouteffort; dreamingaboutthingsweknowwe shoulddobutwhichwecannotmuster enoughenergytodo. Thistalkaboutdreamingisvery vague,andseeminglybesidethepoint, butwhenitisappliedtoaCatholic's attitudetohisreligionitassumesan importancewhichis,tosaytheleast, critical.Everyoneisinfluencedin somewaysbyhisenvironment,\Ve Catholicsliveinapaganenvironment, andsoitisonlytobeexpectedthatwe shouldhaveacertainpaganelementin ourmake-up.Thisisnoticeablein ourapatheticattitudetothingsspiritual. Weoftenhearavoicefromthepulpitaskingus,forourowngood,toassistatMassmorefrequently,andwith greaterdevotion.Whatdowedo whenwehearthis?Forthemost partwestartdreamingaboutanold ageofleisureinwhichwecanfind timetogotoMassanddoallthose thingswhichtherushandbustleof modernlifemakesimpossible.Impossible.Fiddlesticks! Aleoparddoes notchangehisspotsovernight.What wearecontenttobeto-daywewillbe to-morrowifwedonotdecidetowake upandfacetherealityoflife.Underneathourdreamyexteriorweknow thatrushandbustleaftermaterial thingsarenotfulfillingthepurposefor whichwewerecreated,namely,to workoutoureternalsalvation.
Soletussticktheproverbialpinin ourthickhidesandstartdiverting someoftheenergybehind
TheinvasionofIraqand,morerecently,thatofIranhaveformostofus simplyemphasisedagaintheuniversal characterofthepresentfight.But oncemore,too,theyhavefocussedattentionuponaforce,dominantstillin thosetwocountriesamongmany, which,littlelessthanChristianity,has leftitsformandimpressonhistory. WhilethenationsofEuropeengagein thisfratricidalanddestructivewar, eagerlyandwatchfullyIslamstands andwaits.
Whicheversideisableattheendto claimthepoorvictory,itwillbeunable tostabilisetheworldonamaterialist basis,whetherthatbasisbeNational Socialist,Communist,orjustplain pagan.Formaterialismcanneverbe apermanentbasisforanycivilisation.
ThentheheresyofIslamwithits emphasisonthespiritualand,atthe sametime,itsconcessionstotheanimalinuswillremain,inthewordsof amodernhistorian,thegreatestfoeof Christianityandallitstandsfor, Mohammedanismforitsfourteencenturiesofexistencehasneverceasedto beoneoftheincalculablereagentsof history.To-daytheOccidenthasforgottentheterrorwhichthenameof Islaminspiredlessthantwocenturies ago.Rapidadvancesinourmaterial culturehaveencouragedtheopinion thatIslam,despiteits260,000,000adherents,cannotberegardedasarival toChristianity.
Yet,infact,Mohammedanismisthe onlyreligionbesidesourownthatis stillgainingconvertsinconsiderable numbers.Moslempropagandaand Moslemzealfortheconversionofthe unbelieverareactiveeverywhereinthe East.Beforethepresentwar,centralAfricawasrapidlybeingIslamised despitetheheroiceffortsofCatholic missionariestostemthetide.Every trueMoslemisamissionary.Andthe presentwarwithitsilleffectsonCatholicmissionshasnotaffectedMoslem proselytisingactivitiestoanyappre ciableextent.
Thereare,however,twosidestothe modernpictureofIslam.Oneshows theMoroboyspittingonthestatueof ChristOurLordwhilewaitinghisturn inaCatholicdispensaryinthesouthernPhilippines.Ontheothersideof thepictureweseeaprofessorofphilosophyinaMohammedaninstituteof
higherlearning,holdingdegreesfrom AmericanandGermanuniversities, scoffatbeliefinMohammedandmake openprofessionofagnosticism, Toreconcilethetwoisnotdifficult. Islamto-dayisundergoingarevolution.Thematerialcivilisationofthe Westhasawakenedthemassesthat professthefaithofMohammedtoa realisationoftheirbackwardness.As acontrasttoIslamadvancingsideby sidewithChristianityamongthepeoplesofmissionlands,weseetheeducatedMoslemofourgenerationsubstitutingdevotiontothescreen,strong spiritsandspeedforthelessalluring 411m0411.1

OneofthegreatesIfieldsofmissionary endeavourmaybeopenedwithinthe nextdecade.Upuntilnowthreequartersormoreoftheconversions madeamongMoslemshavebeenmade bynon-Catholics,Istheretobea responseonthepartofCatholicsto theneedforapostlesinthisdifficult work?Allcanatleastprayforthe returntotheChurchofthemillions spirituallyenslavedinaheresythat deniestheDivinityofChristandhas destroyedtheFaithinlandsonce whollyChristian.-"America."
