Theentertainmentprovedmostenjoy- able,andfromtherisingofthecurtaintothefinalact,thepupilssucceededinentertainingtheirpatronswithvocalandinstrumentalitems, dances,andtheoperettas"Christmas inOtherLands"and"BriarRose."
Themajorportionofthefirsthalf oftheprogrammewasdevotedtothe juveniledrama,"ChristmasinOther Lands,"inwhichtheSleepyDust Fairy(MissA.Glass),withthecooperationofFatherChristmas(Master P.Wheelan)givesthechildrenofAustraliaaninsightintohowthechildren cfNorway,Holland,Russia,andItaly fareatChristmastime.Thecostuming,representativeofthevariouscountries,wasmostappropriate,andthe juvenilesactedtheirseveralpartswith greatsuccess.AsFatherChristmas, MasterB.Whelanwasallthattraditionhaddepictedhim,whileMissis. Glass,astheSleepyDustFairy,attendedtothewishesofthechildren, aswasonlytobeexpectedofafairy. a Herelocutionaryabilitywasalsovery pleasing.L.Prunster,asFather Christmas'reindeer,E.Enrightas Babuska.MasterN.BriersastheCat, andMasterM.TroyastheDog,maintainedtheircharactersexcellently, whileMast4Z.McGuinness,asthe NaughtyB7,-,7vasveryentertaining.

Thelatterhalfoftheprogramme comprisedtheoperettaentitled,"Briar Rose-SleepingBeauty,"andthehistrionicabilityofthevariousartistes, combinedwiththeappropriatecostumesworn,resultedinamostenjoy- ableandpleasingpresentation.The sceneopensintheKing'sPalace, wherethereisrejoicingatthebirth ofthebabyprincess.Sevenfairygod- mothersareinvited,buttheQueen's omissiontoinviteBlackabogle,the Witch,bringsdowntroubleuponthe Royalfamily.Blackabogle,enraged atnotbeinginvitedtothecelebra tions,castsaspelloverthePrincess, whichcauseshertosleepforahundredyears.Inthemeantimeseveral suitorsendeavourtogainanentrance intothepalace,wherethePrincessis sleeping,butallfail,untiltheadvent ofPrinceFloria,whosucceedsinwakingthePrincessandwinsherashis bride.
AsKingPeppin,ofRosaciaand QueenPepitarespectively,MissG. McGowanandMissK.Tindalperform- edverysatisfactorily,whileMissP. Whelan.asBlackabogledemonstrated abilityofnomeanmeritforajuvenile. MissK.Ryanwasgoodasthemuch admiredPrincessBriarRose,while Floria(MissD.Cahill)alsocarriedout herpartwell,asdidalsotheminor characters.
Achorussongbythepupils,entitled "GodBlessOurLovelyMorningLand, Australia."asafinaletotheentertainment,andtheoverture,"TheWedding oftheRose,"byanorchestraofinstrumentalists,headedbyMr.C. Wright,werefurtheritemswhichcontributedtoamostenjoyableentertainment.

Theroadlaybeforeus,awhiteribbon,dwindlingawayintotheilliraitabledarknessoftheforest.Herein thesemountainsoftheHaute-Loire trafficwassmall,andonthisforest, roadfromChateauVeraneyxitwas negligible.Snowhadfallensteadily alltheafternoon,andonintothecalm greyofthenight;sotheroadandthe earthatthetree-rootswasallwhite, gleaminginthemoonlight.Behind uswasthechateau,avast,irregular groupoftowers,risingonitsrock. plateaufromtheswirlingwatersofthe Loire.Thegreatbellstruckeleven. Myhost,inhisgreatbeaver-tinedcoat, wasalreadyseatedinthecomfortablylightedcoupe.Itookmyseat,and withathudofflyingsnowwewereoff intothenight.
Travellingwasslowonthatforest Ad,thoughit'waskeptingoodreair.Twicewehadtodismount, whilethecarpanteditswayoutof thedeepersnows.Thenonwardagain. Arounduswasthesilenceofthatgreat forest-ashroudofdarkness,broken, hereandthere,byashaftofmoonlightstrikinganopenspace,orarecentclearingmadetoprovidefuelfor thehardymountaineers.Thenwe caughtaglimpseofserriedpine-trees, glisteningrichlyintheircanopiesof snow,reflectedinvastpools,coldand blackinthemoonlight.TwiceIsaw darkforms,stealingawayintothesecurityofthatdimforestandonce, whenwealighted,alowgrowlcame softlythroughthedarkness."Wolves!" saidmycompanionshortly.Hereand there,too,thegreatdarknesswas brokenbythesuddenflareoflight fromthewoodherd'shut;andoncein theflareofthelampsIsawafur-coatedpeasantstandingbyhishighmarket cart.Thatwasall:fortherestthere wasnosound,nolight,nolife-not eventhedullsobbingofwind,thedrivingofrainagainstourwindows,orthe swayingofthemanytrees.Nothing butdarkness,solid,silent,withthe greypatchesoflightonthecleared landandtheyellowblurofapeasant's lamp.
Atlastthelongforestroadended, andweweretravellingthroughrncuntainstowardstheplains.Thescene wasindescribablylovely.Inagreat, smoothsky,silveredwith hungatranquilmoon.OverthecountrywasaChristmascalm.Themountainsscintillatedintheirsnowcoverings,brokenhereandtherebythe darknessofpinewoods.Inthevalleyslaythesnow,heapedandunspoiledthepoolsandrivuletswerehard andsparkling.Hereandtherewere quietcottagesonthehillsideandbelowus,withtheirlightedwindowsand hospitablefire-litrooms.
Ontheroadswasallmanneroftraffic,fromtheclosedsuper-carofthe "grandseigneur"speedingtohisdistantchateautothehighroofedcart ofthebelatedpeasantreturningfrom market.
Wespedthroughavillage-justa groupofcottages-avignetteofacomfortableinndischargingitslaterevellers,asquat-toweredchurch,agroup offur-coatedpeasantspreparingfor theirmountain(journey,andonagain intothesilent,expectantworldofthe country.Onthroughthepain,on thoselong,straightroads,swifter,as traffichadchurnedthesnowtoslush thatswirledandspunbeneathour wheels;onpastfarmhouses,cottages, chapels,tillthelightsofagreattown rosemirroredinthesky,beforeus, and,amidsttheclashandthunderof fiftybells,wesplasheddownagreat, widestreet,andstoppedintheshadow ofthecathedral.
Within,inthedarkness,weregatheredhundredsofpeople,surgingtoand fro,carryingprie-dieus,rattlingthem ontheground,andtalking,quicklyand shrilly.Ifeltjustalittledamped. Herewasnoneoftheaugustpomp, thesilentdignityofagreatfestival, Wefoundprie-dieus,awayfromthe crowd,intheaisle,justoppositethe highaltar,quiteclosetothegreat gatesofthechoir.
Abellsounded,curiouslyaloof.Then agreatman,inliveryandcarryinga halbert,appeared,decoratedwiththe GrandCrossoftheLegion.Thenoise ceased;thelastchair-rattlersubsided, againthebelltolled.Doorsacross thechoirwereflungopen.Icaughta glimpseofpurpleandlace.Then, sharply,myattentionwasheldbya trembleofmusicfromthegreatorgan upthereintheshadows.Therewas anothertremblelikethetuning-noteof anangel'schoir-sweet,inexpressibly sweet.Andthen-theglad,triumphantsurgeofawonderfulBachmotif. Ah,howIwasgladwhenIheardit! Nonervelessmarch,nosoullessthing, notrampingjog-trot,butamighty waveofsound,surgingforthfromthe
shadows,breakinginvolumeaftervolume,alloverthatvastcathedral,and dyingtumultuouslyawayintheshadowyaislesandchapels.Againit came,butnowothervoiceshadtaken upthemajesticcry;lessgrandindeed; sweeter,moredelicate;otherssadand mournful,othersloudlyinsistent,roaring,laughing,wailingacrossthatgreat seaofsound.Thentheysanktorest, gradually,quietly,lessinsistent,they weresoonatrest,thenoncemore, grandly,wildly,bravely,withtheshout. ingdeliriumofjoyandpower,came thegreatmotif,echoingintheaisles andarches,tumblingtumultuously amidstthecoldandmellowstonework. Thenitdiedaway:theoft-repeated echoesweregentler,morequietlybeautiful;tillatlastitseemedasifachoir ofunseenangelswerecarryingthat gladcrytotheverygatesofdistant Paradise. Ipausenowonthethresholdof something,forwhichboldnarrationis almosta,dishonour.ThatMidnight Masswascertainlyanexperience.It wasgorgeousinthelightofmanycandles.Onthealtarweredull-goldvessels,shiningwithdiamondsthathad beenthebelatedgiftofapenitentEmperor.OnhisthronesattheCardinal-Bishop,resplendentintheriotous scarletofhisrobes,fleckedbythe jewelledgleamofPapaldecorations. Inthechoir,enshrinedinthecarved gloryofthirteenthcenturywoodwork, weretheCanonsanddignitariesofthe cathedral.Thevestmentsgleamed withjewels.ItwasabeautifulMass, andachoirofmalevoiceschanteda touching"Adeste."
HutmyrealMass,myrealexaltation,myrealChristmasgreeting,had respondedto,hadbeencaughtupand intensifiedby,thatgloriousfuguethat preludedtheDivinemysteries.
Allwasovernow.Theelectriclights, shiningcoldlyinthatforestofGothic tracery,werebeingextinguished.On thealtarwasthesmokeofahundred quenchedcandles.Thedoorsopposite thechoirwereclosed.Inthechoir thelonglinesofsaintsandkingswere relapsingintotheirstarkdarkness.The chairswererattlinginthebodyofthe church.Therewasasoundofasurgingctiowdgoingoutintothenight.All wasover.Bymyside,mysoldierly hostkneltinhisgreatbeaver-lined coat,theverypictureofaGod-fearing Frencharistocrat.We,too,rose,and N.entoutintothenoiseandcoldness ,,"themorning. Then,inthedawn,backtothe l.ateau.grimandfeudalinthemidst oftheencirclingforest,ontherocky plateau,risingfromtheLoire.AsI layawakethatmorningtherewasstill inmyearsthegladsomecryofthat myriadofvoices.PerhapsIwas wronganditwasonlythesoundof theLoire,hoarsewithbrokenice,rushingthroughthemountains,fiftyfeet below.--R.C.C.

Thescholasticyearwasbroughtto amostsuccessfulconclusiononDecember6,whentheCollegeconcertand dramaticperformancetookplace.A largeandappreciativeaudiencewitnessedanexcellentanddiversifiedprogramme.TheVeryRev.PriorWilfrid,intheabsenceoftheLordAbbot, whoisabroad,presided,andwasac companiedbyseveraloftheBenedictines.FrombeginningtoendtheentertainmentreflectedthegreatestcreditontheSistersandstudentsalike, thefirstpartbeingdevotedtoclassic andchoralnumbers(withahappyin troductionofaveryhumorousitem), whilethelatterhalfwaswhollydevotedtoanappropriatedramabrimful ofsignificance,"ANativityPresentation."
"TheBrooklet,"anopeningchorus bythepupils,wasimmediateevidence ofthesuccessdestinedtoattendevery subsequentnumber.Thevoicesblendedattractively,andeachmellowedrefrainrevealedparticularlywellabalanceofthefirstandsecondvoicesto delightfuleffect.Asanelocutionist MissJoanHarveytwoyearsagodemonstratedhereagerabilityforthe art.InBuckham's"SongoftheMarketPlace,"onthisoccasion,although sufferingfromacold,sheexcellently dramatisedthewailoftheunwanted womanandherbabeintheFrench marketplace,andtheartistwho,impetuouslyrenderingsuccour,experiencedthatrewardofspontaneousjoy vouchsafedbyanactofholycharity. Thedearoldballad,'"Rose.ofMy Heart,"asavocalduet,wassungby MissesChittyandTreacy.Itsdelight,
however,wassucceededbyadiverting sketchbyMissesWilliams,Barnes,and Martinelli,whocreatedafuroreby theircleverconcoctionofsingingand acting.Roechel's"ABirdinthe Hand"''TheOldMaidsofLee").Miss M.Gannonfollowedwithapianosolo, "Beethoven'sSonata"Op.7.With laurelsofsuccessinherrecentexam. inationsstillabouther,thisyoung lady."stillveryyoung,promisesdistinctiveachievement.Herworkin thisnumber,highlyattractiveasit was,revealedtheverynecessaryad. juncttofeminineperformance,particularlyofBeethoven,viz.,thatmasculinityofcomposureandtechnique. 'RhthmeticDrill,"byascoreormore ofpupils,presentedaverygraceful expositionofphysicaltraining,anda truereflexoftheinculcationofutmost careandprecision.Eightofthe seniorstudentsnextassembledin Glover'spartsong,"TheLilyandthe Rose,"thebeautifulvocalharmony beingexpressivelyworthyofthesub limesentimentofthisfamiliar,oldtimesong.Ajoytoeveryone,old andyoung,was"FairyBells,'interpretedbyabevyoftinyjuniors.Clad infairygala,the"Queen"dominated thedellwithhermagicwand,towhich thenymphsunhesitatinglyandvery prettilysubmittedingracefuldances andposes.Thenthefinalnumberof themusicalprogrammewasMissE. Treacy'spianosolo,"Phantasie"inE Minor(MendelssohnOp.16).Exceptionallywellsuitedtohertask,Miss Treacy,imbuedwiththetrueMendelssohnspirit,providedanexcellent transcription,tinklingmelody,of course,characterisingtheseductive natureofthework,anditisherethe -performerwasobviouslyquitenatural andatease.Theyoungladyaccom. panistesthroughoutdeserveduemen tionoftheircontributiontothesuccessoftheprogramme.
"ANativityPresentation"followed, withactsandscenessignificantofthe approachofChristmas.Outstanding andbearingtheburdenoftheproduction.MissJ.Harvey,astheolddecrepitshepherd"Uncle,"wasindeed excellentthroughout,ablysupported by"Boy"(C.Cole)and"Thomas"(N. Clapshew).Shepherdsalsowere"Ned" (P.Langer),"Willum"(B.Magee), "Tim"(M.Ayres),"Zachary"(E. Baston),and"Bart"(D.Smoker).The tenoroftheir"shepherdtalk"and songsanddanceswasthatsomething unusualhadbroughtthemtogether. Conversationsuchasbefitsthemby theiroccupationasbeingnearest NatureandcommuningwithHerwith theirlivesandanimalswasmeaningful,excitedlysustainedbyoneand thentheothertillatlengthastrange, unknownsoundmomentarilytransportedthemonlytobeawakenedtoa realisationthat"Uncle"hadbeengin enthesecret.Atlengthatableau depictedtheangelannouncingthejoyfultidingsovertheprostrateshepherds,andthestorycarriedusonto thecitywhere"Andrew,"theinnkeeper(M.Bown)wasahesitantbutinterestedwitnesstotheuncertaintyof themoment,pressinghisbrotherJohn (G.Adamson)andhisdaughter"Miriam"(I,Burrell)tointerpretforhim theshepherds'story,while"Nat"(P. Burrell),theservant,alsoassistedto unravelthemystery.TheThreeKings
fromtheEastappeared,havingseen "thesign,""Melchior"(P.Brother- stone)pourtrayingadmirablemajesty- anddignity.Acomposedelocution- ist,hisferventexpressionsoffaith intheScripturalsignsofthetimes. andunfetteredinthedesiretofulfil theprophecies,and,withtheguiding starflickeringinthedistance,heradiatedaninfluenceoverhiscompan- ions,biddingthem,"Balthazer"(S. McGrath)and"Gasper".(B.Brother- stone),followevenagainstHeratZ orders,Thereuponinvisiblesoundsof angelvoicesoverawedtheunquietmultitudethathadgatheredontheway, andanexquisitedemonstrationofper- ferviddumbfoundednessinthetab- leauwasherewitnessed.Whatwith thecelestialharmonyofthetuneful carol,"SilentNight,"andtheflash litstarneartothedarkenedceiling. claimingthevividlyabstractcountenancesofthecharacters,dominatedby "Melchior"and"Uncle,"thescenewastranscendentlybeautiful.Induetime thejourneyingKiegsaalpitheirentouragewerepreesnted theen- thronedHerod(S.Runciman)inhis palace.UponthetidingsofthecorningofanewMessias,yetagainreactinghisearsthrough"Melchior,""Herod"developedalltherageat- tributedtohim,promulgatingthe massacreofthemalechildren,etc.,in whichforfluent,unfaultering,vehementoratoryhewonuniversaladmirationoftheaudience."Micanor"(N. Fonceca),acourtier,and"Hycranus" (G.White),adoctor,receivedthe royalonslaughtwithsubservienttimidity.Thefinaltableau,representative oftheadorationoftheDivineInfant bytheEasternKingsandtheshep- herds,superstructedbyamarvellous arrayofangelsfromaboutthecradle uptodizzyheights,wasindeeda "thingofbeauty."Actuallyseeingthe vistawasonlypartofthejoyforthe delicatelyobtruding"Adeste permeatedthewholescenewiththe mostsolacingeffect.
ThefunctionconcludedbytheVery Rev.Priorextending,onbehalfofthe audience,thanksandcongratulations totheSistersandstudentsonthe greatsuccessoftheentertainmentand theyear'sschoolwork,stressingtheap- propriatenessofwhathadbeenwitnessedandwishingeveryonethereal happinessofChristmasandaprosperousNewYear.

Despitethefactthattherewereseveralcounterattractionsonthe11th. inst.,therewasaverygratifyingattendanceattheKing'sTheatre,when thepupilsoftheChristianBrothers' Collegeentertainedpatronswithaconcertandgymnasticdisplaycombined. Theentertainment,thesecondsince theestablishmentoftheschool,proved anunqualifiedsuccessandtherewas notadullmomentthroughoutthe evening.Thevariousitems,includingseveralsketches,orchestral,vocal andinstrumentalitems,actionsongs, andlast,butnotleast,theexhibition ofgymnastics,pyramids,andvaulting horse,notonlycommandedthesustainedinterestoftheaudience,but earnedftrthepupilswarmapprecia.'lion.

TheRev.BrotherDaly.Superiorof -theCollege,presentedadetailedstatementofthereceiptsandofthevariousitemsofexpenditure.Brother Dalystatedthathewasdeeplyindebtedtothecollectors,theresultsof whoseuntiringeffortshadpassedhis mostsanguineexpectations,andbad enabledmuchusefulworktobedone inconnectionwiththecollege,both withintheclassroomandwithinthe grounds.Hedesiredspeciallyto thankMessrs.StinsonandO'Brienand thecollectors,MesdamesO'Brien,Russell,Parry,Carroll,Stinson,Martin, English,Pascoe,Francis,Moroney,and Ardagh.TheRev.FatherMosscongratulatedthemembersontheresults oftheirfirsthalfyear'swork.He statedthatthepresentfinancialstringencynecessitatedtheutmosteconomy.Hehopedwhentheymetagain earlyinthenewyearthesameenthusiasmwouldbeshown,andthat otherswouldlinkuptoshowtheirappreciationoftheworkoftheBrothers, andassistthecollectors,whoduring thehalfyearunderreviewhadcarriedouttheirexactingdutiesinamost satisfactorymanner.Hehopedthat the"oldboys,"manyofwhomheld highlyremunerativepositionsthroughouttheState,wouldbecomemembers ofourassociation,themembershipfee forwhichwasonlyIs.permonth.He congratulatedtheBrothersontheexcellentresultsobtainedintheschool andinthesportsarena.Messrs.Russell(treasurer),Horgan(secretary), andBoylensupplementedtheremarks ofthepreviousspeakers.

TheplaywasenlivenedbytheadditionalcharacterofPedro(MasterFred Buck).Heplayedhisparttoperfection,and,owingtohisimpishness, provedasourceofmerrimentthroughouttheentertainment.MissKate McMahon,inherpartasFairyGodmother,charmedallwithhervoice andmanner,whileherlittlebandof fairiesformedassweetapictureas couldeverlieconjuredinchildhood's dreamswhentheycametrippingalong infrocksofthedaintiesthues.Great applausewasextendedtothelizard footmen(MastersBillyMoran,Ernie Dwyer,JamesFuller,TomLowther), andthecoachman(MasterPatDwyer). Theballroomscene,whichfinalisedthe pantomime,wasmagnificent.The MinuetandGardenWaltzweregracefullyexecutedbytheleadingcharacters.Charmingindeedistheword whichcanbeappliedtoMissMavis Bond,whoactedtheroleof"Prince Charming,"andtearsofjoy,filledthe eyesofmanyasPrinceCharmingand Cinderellaparadedtheballroom.The charactersofKingandQueenwerefittinglyportrayedbyMissE.Thornett andMissRuthFairhead.Thepages inwhiteliveriesandredcloaksadded anotherbeautifultouchtothegorgeouscostumes.
Allpresentcouldnotspeakhighly enoughofthetalentedandartistic scenicdecorations-theworkofRev. FatherDoddy.'Theballroomscenery wasideallyrealistic,andconsiderably addedtothetastefulcostumingtif theperformers,whilethekitchenscene wastruetolifeineverydetail.The childrenwillevergratefullyremember thepatienceandkindnessofRev. FatherDoddyandtheSistersinthe preparationoftheperformance.
Theaccompanimentwasablyrenderedbytheorchestra,consistingof piano(MissFlannery),cornet(Mr.R. Baker),drums(Mr.A.Baker),violins (Messrs.L.Baker,James,Wardand Smith).Priortothedrawingofthe curtain,andduringtheinterval,delightfulmusicwasgivenbytheorchestraTheRev.MotherandtheSistersdesiretothankthepublicwho performanceasuccess.Specialthanks soheartilyco-operatedtomakethe isduetoMrs.Moran,whoprovidedthe childrenwithadaintysupper,andalso thegoodladieswhogenerouslygave theirtimeandserviceinthemakingof thecostumes.

The"OsservatoreRomano,"theofficialVaticanorgan,recentlydedicated threecolumnsofitsfrontpagetothe announcementoftheexcommunication oftheFrenchpriest,JosephTunnel, ofRheims,allofwhosebookshave beenputontheIndex.Aslongago as1392,Tunnelwasdeprivedofhis .professorialchairatthelocaluniversitybytheArchbishopofRheims,for statingthathedidnotbelieveinthe presenceofChristintheEucharist. Aftervariousadmonitionsandattemptstoprovehisculpabilityasthe authorofmanyatheistbooks,which Tunnelalwaysdenied,itwaseventuallyprovedthatheusedtwelvepseudonymsforthepurposeofwritinghereticaltreatises.Twoofhisbookshave beenpublishedinGreatBritain-one inLondon,"TheLifeoftheDevil,"by "LouisCoulange,"andtheotherin EdinburghTheLatinChurchinthe MiddleAge."`by"AadreeLagarde."

HehadaconventoftheseSistersin hisownArchdioceseofPerth.The workoftheSisterswasunrecognised, buttheirtriumphswererecordedin heaven.Theirliveswerehiddenwith ChristinGod,andtheworldhardly noticedwhattheydid.Theyhad gainedmanywonderfulconversions. HehadnohesitationinsayingthatalthoughtheCatholicsofBrisbanewere heavilytaxed,hefeltgreatconfidence thattheywouldrespondtotheappeal onbehalfoftheSisters.Hewassure thatnothingwouldgivemorepleasure totheheartoftheJubilarianthan thatthepeopleshouldshowtheirappreciationoftheSistersinapractical waytohelptoerectaconventonthat site.Hehadcomealongwayto showhisappreciationoftheirwork. ThespanofhisepiscopateinBrisbanehasbeenashortoneofeleven rears.yetIventuretosaythatinthat period.Ili,otherpartoftheChurchof Gcdintheoldworldorinthenewhas beensoenrichedandadornedormarkedbysuchprogressandsealasthe ArchdioceseofBrisbaneunderArchbishopDuhig-MostRev.Dr.Clune.

Inashortspanhehaddonewhat
tothosewhohadcomefromafarseemedalmostincredible.Hehadspread overBrisbaneamosaicofvariegated andwonderfulbeauty;amosaicof churches,schools,convents,andreligiousactivities.Hisworkshad sprungupliketheflowersinthe spring,whereverhehadtrodden.Undoubtedlythisentitledhimtoberememberedamongstthegreatestchurch. menthatadornedtheChurchinAustralia.NootherpartoftheChurch intheoldworldorthenewhadbeen soenrichedandadornedbythezeal ofapastorastheArchdioceseofBrisbane.
Despitethedepressednatureofthe times,evennowtheChurchwasone ofthegreatestemployersoflabour. Between70and80percent,ofwhat wascontributedtoit-despitewhat thegrumblerssaid.andtheywere generallytheoneswhonevercontrt butedanything-wentbackthrough thepaysheetstothewageearnerswho were'buildingitsedifices.
Intimesofunemploymentlikethe present,hewenton,itwaswelltorememberwhatsooftenwasforgotten, thatthegreatesthelpersoftheworkerwerethemenlikeHisGrace,who keptonthosebuildingenterprisesin order,foronereason,togivethe peopleworkinatimeofstress.
Iftheyweretoaskwhowasthe greatestemployer,thegreatestwagepayerinQueensland,heventuredto saythattheanswerwouldheArchbishopDuhis.(Applause.)
ThevirtuesofHisGracewereso manythatitwouldbeimpossibleto dohimjusticeinanhour'soratory: butherepresentedthehierarchyof Australia,whowerefilledwithadmirationforthismanofGodtowhom theyofferedtheiraffectionateesteem, theirreverence,andcongratulations.

Theywereimmenselyproudthathe hadtheapprobationofotherdenominations;thathewasrecognisedand esteemedasagreatcitizen,afriend ofthepeople,afar-seeingstatesman whoseopinionsweresoughtbythe highestintheland.
HisGracewouldlookbackwithsatisfactiononhisrecordof25years,bUt when25Yearshencehereceivedthe plauditsandadmirationofhisflock, hewouldhavemaderecords,farexceedinganythinginthehistoryofthe Church.(Applause).

"Iseehere,aroundme,myfellowpre- latesinthehierarchy,headedbythe illustriousArchbishopofPerth.Isee aroundmemonsignoriandpriestsfrom otherdioceses,inotherStates,andin thisState.Iseeinlargenumbersmy ownbelovedclergy,someofwhom havebeenmyfellowlabourersduring these25years.Isee,too,thevery flowerofourCatholiclaity,headedbytheAttorney-GeneraloftheState,andtheSeniorPuisneJudge." inthesesurroundingshehadbeen examininghisconscience,andhadaskedhimselfwhatclaimhadhetoall theremarkabletributesthathadbeen paidtohimduringthepastdays. Therewerecertainthingshecouldnot deny.Hecouldnotdenythatfrom theverydayonwhichthemitrewas placedonhishead25yearsago,hehad practicallyneverrestedfromhislabursHislifecertainlyhadbeenvery strenuous.Thetaxattimesonmind andbodyhadbeenextreme,buthe hadtothankGod,andhealthyIrish parents,whogavehimawonderful constitution,thathehadstoodup againstallthework.To-dayhefelt asfreshashedidonthedayofhis consecration.(Applause.)
aretwoorthreethingsto whichImaylayclaim,"proceededHis Grace."FirstIamproudtoclaim thatneitherthehonouroftheepisco- pate,noranyotherconferredonme asapriestorbishophaseverchanged thesimplicityofmylife.Ihavealwaysregardedmyvocationtothe priesthood,andmyelevationtoepis- copalrankasjustanactofDivine Providence.NeverinmylifehaveI foundanythinginmyselfofwhichI mightbeproud,orwhichmightgive metherighttolorditovermyfellowmen.Ihavebeenaccessibletothe people,eventolittlechildren,andI donotthinkthereisanyinthisaudience,orthroughoutthediocesethat willnotagreewiththatstatement."

Secondly,HisGracewenton,looking forareasonforallthepeople'stri- butes,hefoundthathehadnever madeuseofhispositionasBishopto enrichhimself,ortoraiseuphisfam- ilyinthesocialscale.To-day,hewas poorerthanwhenhebecameaBishop. andHisfamilywasinthesamesocial positionastheywereonthedayof hisconsecration.
Hehadhadopportunities,hadhe desiredtotakethem,ofaccumulating wealth,buthepreferredtofollowthe fineexampleofSt.Paul.Ifhehad notfolloweditinotherthings,he couldclaimthathehadfolloweditin this,thathehadtakenjustwhatwas hisdailyneed,andhadturnedevery- thingelsetothebenefitoftheChurch.
"Iclaimalso,"saidtheArchbishop "thatIhavelovedthepoor,thattheyhavebeenamongthedearestofmy flock,thatmydoorhasalwaysbeen opentothem,andthatIhavehelped themsofarasevermymeanswould permit.Finally,IclaimthatIhave lovedQueensland,thatIhaveloved thecitizensofBrisbane,andtheircity, andthatasacitizenIhavetriedto domyverybesttoadvancetheinterestofthewholecommunity."(Ap- plause
To-day,hefeltintenselyproudthat theLordMayorwhosoworthilyfilled thecivicchairofhisnativecity,and representativesofotherreligious bodies,oftheArmyandNavy,ofthe judiciary,oftheprofessions,andof commercegatheredintheCityHall totenderhimgreetingsontheoccasion ofhisjubilee.
"Thesewerejusttheclaimshehad fortheloveandvenerationofthepeo- ple.Butitwouldbeimpossiblefor himadequatelytothankallwhohad joinedintenderinghimgreetingsand goodwishes.Itwouldbeimpossible forhimtorepaybyanywordsthe
wonderfulmanifestationofaffection andloyaltyofthechildrenoftheCa- tholicschools.Theyhadcomein theirhundreds,nayintheirthousands, morningbymorningtotheChurch fromalloverthecityandsuburbs. Theyhadmethimintheschools,they hadtoldhimhowferventlytheyhad prayedthathisworkmightbeblessed, andincludedinthetestimonialnow givenhimwasmuchthatwassub- scribedbytheselittlechildrentohelp himinhiswork,particularlyforthe completionoftheHolyNameCathe- dral.

''Thepastishistory;ifnotwritten itismade,atallevents,"hewenton. "IfIhavemadeanymistakesnoone regretsthemmorethanIdo,butI cansaywithabsolutesinceritythatI haveneverapproachedanylabourthat hasnotbeenpurelyforthehonour andgloryofGod.Withyourassist- ance,withtheassistanceofaCatholic peopleasgenerousanddevotedasyou couldfindinanyotherpartofthe globe,wehavebeenabletodomuch.
"Ithankthedevotedpriests,andgenerouslaity,whohavegivenme suchwonderfulmanifestationsoftheir logeandloyaltyduringthesedays,"addedtheArchbishop."Ifacethe futurewithabsoluteconfidenceinGod, thatweshallbeabletocarryonour buildingprogrammeandmeetallour liabilities.Noonehaseverworked inthevineyardoftheLordyet.orcon- fidedinthatGodforwhomhewas labouringwhodidnotreceivefromHimthemeanstocarryouthiswork."
Werehetrustinginhumanmeans hecouldneverhaveundertakenthe workhehad,norshouldhehavethe couragewithwhichhewasfacingit now.Theywerepassingthroughdiffi- culttimes,butasithadalwaysbeen inthesedifficulttimespeoplehadto live.Therewasnothingto-daythat sotouchedhisheartasthesightof thearmyofunemployed.andifhehad themeanstherewouldnotbeoneun- employedpersoninQueensland.
TheChurchhadgivenagreatdeal ofworkin hundredsthepast.Theyhadspent ofthousandsofpounds,and comparedwiththe£2,000,000expended inacquiringsites,andputtingup buildings,itsliabilitiesto-daywere verysmall.Hefeltintenselyproud ofthepeople,andofbeingthechief pastorofsoexemplaryaflock.He hadmetinhisdailylifenothingbut thekindliestwords,themosthelpful gestures,andthemostearnestco-opera- tionfromthepeople.
Dr.OhmsThanked. HefeltmostgratefultotheArch- bishopofPerth,notsomuchbecause hehadspokenofhimashedid;hefelt certainthathisgreatcharitywas promptinghimeverystepoftheway; butwhathedid.feelgratefulforwas thathehadcomefromthefarwestof Australiatogracethejubileecelebra- tions,tostrikeanoptimisticnote,and totellthemthattherewasagreat futurebeforetheChurchofGodin this,theyoungestofChristiannations. Itwasthatperennialhope,that trustinDivineProvidence,thatspur- redhimonwards;itwasthatloyalty tooneanotherthatbroughtBishops fromtheirownSeestohelpanymem- berofthehierarchywtohadany workinhand.They'Wenttoone anothergladly,becausetheyrealised thatGodhadplacedthemonthe watchtowersofHisrealm,andthey wishedtobeworthy.
InArchbishopClune,heassured them,theysawoneofthemostin- trepidandworthyleadersinthehier- archyofAustralia.Ifhe(Archbishop Duhig)livedtobeahundredhe wouldneverforgetthekindnessof ArchbishopCluneincomingtoBris- bane,andspeakingashehadspoken thatnight. HisGracethankedalsoDr.J.P. O'Collins,theyoungestmemberofthe hierarchy,forcomingafargreaterdistanceeventhanDr.Clune.Hethanked,too,hisoldfriendtheBishopof Toowoomba(Dr.Byrne)forattending,andmentionedwithregrettheabsenceoftheBishopofRockhampton (Dr.Shiel),andtheVicar-Apostolicof NorthQueensland(BishopHeavey).
