Onthe21th.ofMay,1907,abandof ninenunsfromtheConventofSt. JohnofGod,Subiaco,leftFremantle bythe"Bullarra."boundforthe North-West-theirdestinationbeing theBeagleBayMission.ThelateBishopGibney,,whowasdeeplyinterested inthespiritualinterestsoftheaboriginesoftheNor'-West,sawworktobe doneforGodamongthem,andin1890 securedpriestsandBrothersforthat uninvitingfield.Butnunswerealso needed,nunswithatruespiritofselfsacrifice,whowouldbebraveenough toundergoallthehardshipsofanisolatedmission.Hencehisappealto theSistersofSt.JohnofGod,acompanyofwhom,withtrueapostolic zeal,noblyresponded,andasstated leftthecomfortsoftheirMotherhouse andsetoutundertheleadershipof thelateMotherAntonioforthethen unhospitableNorth-West.HisLordshipshowedforesightandacleardiscernmentofcharacterinchoosingthe lateMotherAntonioasSuperioressof thefirstbandofpioneerSisters.She wasendowedwithintensefaith,rare courage,andanearnestzealwhich enabledhertoconfront.obstaclesto whichanyordinarymortalwouldeasilyhavesuccumbed.

AfterbeinginBroomforawhile, MotherAntoniorealisedtheneedofa school,andmoreassistants.Shesent twoSistermissionariestotheSouth andEast.SheherselfwenttoIreland,andtheyallreturnedwithexcellenthelpers.ShealsosawtnenecessityfortrainednursingSisters,and sentaSistertoIrelandforspecial training.Shereturnedwithfourother trainedSisternurses.Theywerenow abletocareforandnursethesickof allcreedsandcolours.TheJapanese ofBroomebuiltafinehospital,and broughtadoctoroftheirownnationalitytotalcscharge:buttheycould notgetalicenseuntiltheyhadtrained nurses.SotheSisterscametothe rescueagain,andputamatronand nurseinthehospital,whichwasduly openedandwheretheSistersdid splendidworkforsufferinghumanity.
Thenursesarestillnursinginthe GovernmentHospitalatBroome.They alsohaveanexcellentschool,wherea first-classeducationisgiven,besides music,piano,violin,andotherstringed instruments,paintinganaldrawing, fancyneedlework,typewriting,shorthand,andbookkeeping.
Thelittleoldshackofthepioneerdayshasbeenabandonedforthecomfortsofamoreup-to-datedwelling place.Near-byafineConventhas beenraised,andwasblessedandopen- edbyBishopCoppoonAugust15,1926.
MotherAntonioandthegoodMother Bernardine,whowerethepioneersof theBroomeCommunity,haveboth gonetotheirrewardleayingtotheir Communityandtoallwhocomewithintheircircleofmissionaryworka sweetmemorythatwillhaveanabidingplaceinthetreasuredrecollections oftheKimberleyApostolate.

InaremotepartoftheCounty Clare,closetotheWesterncoast,where theAtlanticbreaksagainsttherock cliffs,thereistobefoundintheCatholicchurchamonumentthatrepresentsaninterestingiflittle-known periodofIrishhistory.Sixtyyears agoWestClarewasthesceneofcurioushappenings,anditisdifficulttobelieve,inthelightofto-day,thatwhat istoldofthattimecanreallybe true.Yeteye-witnessesremainto provethefacts,andfromthat,bitby bit,thestorycanbegatheredand piercedtogetherintoacompletewhole thatdoesnotadmitofanydoubt.
In1849,theyearoftheGreatFamine,Carrigaholtandthesurrounding districtsweredevastatedbythe scourgeoffever.Thepeoplewere dyingbyscores;hunger,sickness,miserywasoneveryside,anditseemed impossibletocopewiththeforcesof destruction.OneSundaytheparish priest,FatherMalachyDuggan,after administeringthelastritesofthe Churchtoeighteenpersonsdyingof cholera,caughttheplaguehimselfand succumbedtoitattheendofafew days.FatherMichaelMeehan,curate atKilrush,whohadbeensenttohelp thepriestsofWestClareintheirlabours,wasappointedinhisplace.The newparishpriestwasayoungman andfullofstrengthandenergy,andhe threwallhispowersintothegreat fightagainsttheFamine.Onleaving Kilntsh,hisfriendstherehadgiven himtwohundredpoundstoenable himtostartcomfortablyinhisnew home.Confrontedbystarvingpar. ishioners,FatherMeehansoonspent themoneyinotherways.Every morningathisgatethedestitutecollected,andintothiscrowdthepriest came,placingsixpences,shillings,halfcrownsinthethinhandsstretchedout towardshim.Themosey-wassoon gone,buthungerandpovertystillre mained.FatherMeehancouldnot watchthismiserywithoutseekingto relieveit.Hehadnothingmoreof hisowntogive,sohebeggedandborrowedandwas intodebt. lleknewhewasputtingaheavyburdenuponhimself,aburdenhecould notbesureofeverfreeinghimselffrom again.Buttheillsbeforehimwere toogreatnottobelessenedatany cost.
Theleverandwantthatwerescourginghisparishweredifficultiesgreat enoughforanymantocopewith,but anothernowroseupbeforeFather Meehan.NohistoryoftheFamine canI-..'completethatdoesnottellof itstxtritordinaryside-issue-souperism. ThesoonerssenttheiragentstoWest Clare.Inthosedaystherewereno NationalSchoolsinthatpartofthe ,ountr-,.Travellingteachersvisited thedifferentcentresandheldwhat wereealledHedgeSchools.Anew teachercametotheparishofWest (Tan,andheofferedmanyinducementstothechildrentoattendhis classes.Atfirstallwentwell.The ordinaryhookswereusedandthe schoolmasterseemedtobefollowingon theoldacceptedlines.Bydegrees, however,varioussuggestionspierced throughtheteaching,andatlasta newbookwasintroduced-acatechism thatcertainlywasnotCatholic.The maskwasremoved,andthenatureof thenewschoolsandtheirmastermade clear.Atthesametimeastheschools, soupkitchenswereestablishedinDoonaha.Carrigaholt,Cross,andKilbaha, wherehotdinnerswerefreelygiven toallthosewhoapplied.Thesecond timeanypersoncameforadinner,it wasgivenonlyonconditionofpromisedattendanceofthechildrenatthe newschools,andoftheheadsofthe familyatthereligiousserviceheld therein.Thepeoplewerestarving. andtheywereofferedfondattheprice oftheirFaith.Thenbeganthegreat strugglebetweenFatherMeehanand thesoupers.
DuringpenaltimesnoCatholicchurcheswereallowedtoexistinIreland, andincountrydistrictsSundayMass wassaidinthedifferentfarmers' houses.Ashewentround,weekby week,tothevariouscentresofhis largeparish,FatherMeehanurgedon thepeoplenottotakethebribesofferedthem,anddeclaredthathelpmust tomeifonlytheywouldwait.As longashecouldthusgathertheparishionerstogethereverySundayand addressandencouragethem,Father Meehanfelthepossessedthemoral forcetoholdthem.Thesoupersfelt 'hisalso,andnowsettoworktopretthesemeetingsandtoputastop toSunday'sMass.Thefarmersofthe

districtinwhosehouseMasswassaid wereinformedthatiftheycontinued toallowtheservicetotakeplacetheir dwellingswouldbeknockeddownover theirheads.Oneofthesetoldthe priestofthethreatenedpersecution, addingthathewouldratherseethe housefallthenclosehisdooronthe Mass.FatherMeehan,however,dedaredhewouldnotletthepeoplesufferandthathewouldmakeotherarrangementsfortheSunday'scelebration.
Twobrotherswhohadtheirhouses joinedtogetherwerewillingtosell them,astheywishedtogotoAmerica.
FatherMeehanmadethepurchase, brokethroughthedividingwall,and turnedthetwodwellingsintoachapel. Thebuildingwasbarelycompleted whenawritwasservedontheparish priest.Hewasevictedandthechapel hehadmadeknockedtotheground. Nothingdaunted,however,Father Meehan'sinventivegeniussoonfound anotherwayofenablingtheSundayobligationtobefulfilled.Thenext week,whenthepeoplecametotheappointedplacetohearMass,theyfound animprovisedaltarerectedintheopen. Twocarts,tiltedupwards,wereplaced facingeachother,acrosstheaxleswas laidaboardarrangedasanaltar,and fromtheshafttopsquiltswerehung tomakeashelteraround.During theremainderofthesummerandon throughtheautumnthisarrangement continued,andthehousesdoomedto destructionweresetfree.Butwith thewinterweather-thestormsand therain-thecartaltarwasnolonger secure.Theelementseffectivelyput astoptotheservice.
FatherMeehanatlastfeltbaffled. Twicehehadoutwittedtheopposing powers,andnowNatureherselfseemed tohavetakenpartagainst them. Wearyanddiscouraged,hereturned oneeveningtohiFhouseandthemhe satpplateintothenighttryingto makeuphismintthatthestruggle wasoveranethathewasbeaten.Suddenlyanideacameintohismind,came soclearlythathealmostthoughtthe wordshadbeenspokenintohisear. "BuildanArk."Thissolutionofthe difficultywassoobviousthathewonderedithadnotoccurredtohimat first.Hispeopleshouldhavetheir ArkofSalvationandbesecureagainst everyopposition.Immediatelyhe rose,tookhislastremainingtenpound note,andwentdowntothevillage carpenter,OwenCollinsbyname.He handedOwenthemoneyandexplain edwhathewanteddone.Thetrades manmadethe"LittleArk,"and"said thereciterofthestory,"whetherthe tenpoundspaidhimforhislabouror notIdonotknow.Ifitdidnot. OwenCollinsneversaidawordabout it."
Builtsomethinglikeabathingcabin, theArkhadglasswindowsoneach side,anopendoorway,anditwassupportedonfourwheels.Ashortstep ladderleduptothethreshold.The altarwasplacedatthefarthestend andtheofficiatingpriestwaseasily seenthroughtheglasswindowsand open door.
FatherMeehanbroughttheArkto Kilbahaandplaceditonagrassriangleatthemeetingofthreeroads. Nowheknewhimselftobesecure. Ilecouldnotbeevictedfromthespot, foritwasnoman'sland.Thealtar wasprotectedfromtheelements,for thelittlechapelcouldbeturnedonits wheelsinanydirectionawayfromthe wind.Outsideontheroadthecongregationassembled,kneelingingroups aroundtheArk.Astone'sthrowfrom themthewavesbeatagainsttheshore, makingnature'smusicasanaccompanimenttotheservice.
Thesouperswerenotreadytogive upthestruggleyet.Afewweeksafter thebuildingoftheArk,FatherMeehanwassummonedtotheSessionsat Kilrush.HewasaccusedofobstructingthethoroughfareatKilbaha.The casewasgiveninhisfavour.Refusingtoacceptthedecision,thesoupers broughtthecasetoDublin.Itwas heldthereforasecondtime,andthe judgmentwasagaingivenagainst them.AtlastFatherMeehanhad finallyconquered:theArkwassafe andSundayMasscouldbesaidwithout anyinterferenceinWestClare.
Bydegreesthestoryofthestruggle wasnoisedabroad,andpublicopinion wasraised.Peoplecomefromgreat distancestowitnessthe'uniquesight ofawholeparishmeetingSundayafter Sundayonthesea-shore-theonlyspot wheretheywerefreetoworshipGod intheirownway.Itwasincredible thatthingshadcometosuchapass, anditwasnottobetoleratedthat theyshouldcontinue.Astrongoutsideopinionwasbroughttobearupon thesoupers.Theywereinformedthat thedaysofsuchpersecutionwerepassed.AsitewasgivenforaCatholic church,fundsweresentfrommany partsoftheworld,andwithinview oftheLittleArkasubstantialstone buildingwaserected.WiththebuildingofthenewchurchatKilbahasouperismwasrouted,thoughitoccasionallyraiseditsheadinafeebleeffortto assertitself.Butitspowerwasgone. Thesearchlightoftheworld'sopinion madeitsdoingtooclearforthemto bestillcarriedon.
TherecollectionsofFatherMeehan arefreshinthemindsoftheolder generationofthepeopleofWest Clare.Manysawhim,manyknew him,manyhadbeentaughtbyhimas children.ManyservedMassinthe LittleArk,andsharedinsomeofthe strangescenesofthesouperismdrama. Oneofthesemen,whofromaltarboy becameorganistandthenschoolmaster,wasconstantlywithFatherMeehan,andhepossessesafundofanecdoteofthoseyears.Fromhisdescription,FatherMeehanwasapowerfully builtman,veryathletic,andagreat loverofsport.Heoftentookaturn athurleywiththeladsofthedistrict, andwasseentodrivetheballupwards, outofsight,twenty-fivetimesrecurringwithoutmovingfromthespot wherehestood.Hewasanexcellent shot,andcouldhitasixpencethrown intotheairsixtyyardsfromhisgun. Oftenonafreedayhewentoutfowling,takingwithhimasacompanion ThomasCasey,hisorganist."Hesaid he'dbelonesomegoingbyhimselfand wouldfindthewaylong.Well,if talkevershortenedaroaditwas shortenedthen,fornomanIevermet couldtalkaswell."
FatherMeehanhadothertalents also.Hewasamusician,andhad taughthisorganistnotonlytoplay, butthescienceofthemusicaswell. HecollectedtheyoungmenofCarrigaholttogether,andmadethem a hand.Heattractedthechildrento hisschoolbymusicandgames.He wrotepoemsinIrishandinEnglish. andsetthemtomusic.Oneofthese, abeautifulIrishhymn,wentbeyond hisparishandhasfounditswayinto DouglasHyde's"ReligiousSongsof Connaught."Thusrunsthefirstverse inliteraltranslation:
"Fromthefoeofmycountry,thefoe ofmyFaith, Fromthefoeofmyfamilyandmy friends, Oh.Lord!bemyprotectorwiththe signofThyHolyCross." Thishymnwaswrittenthatthe peoplemightlearnitbyheartandsay itconstantlyduringthetimesof struggle.OtherpoemsFatherMeehancomposedthatturnedwithgreat spiritthesoupersintoridicule.He setthemtopopularairsandtaught thechildrentosingthem.
Strangeincidentsoccurredfromtime totimeduringthesouperwar.In theearlypartofthestruggleafarmer inwhosehouseMasswasoftensaid, hadacceptedoneofthelittle'speckledbooks,"asthosedistributedbythe ,superagentwerecalled.Whenthe Sundaycameroundhefearedthe priestmightfindthebook,soheplaced itintheroofoverthedoorwayofthe cattleshed.Inpreparingthestable forthepriest'shorsehetookouthis jennetandledittotheothershed.The animalrefusedthecrossthethreshold. Inducements,blows,proveduseless. Thejennet,usuallytractable,would notobey.Inthestrugglethe"speckledbook"wasdetachedfromitshidingplaceandfell.Themanpicked itupandimmediatelythejennetenteredthestable."Ajennetcarries theCrossofChristonitsback,soit wouldnotpassunderthesouper's book,"commentedthetellerofthe story."Thereweremanypeoplein thosedayslikethatman.Theydid notbecomesoupers,buttheydabbled withthesoup."
Anotherincidenttookplacetowards
theendofthefight.OneSunday,a& FatherMeehancameintotheSmnctuaryofKilbahachurch,thesouper agententeredthebuilding.Hetook uphispositioninthecentreofone side,aconspicuousfigureamidstthe kneelingcongregation.FatherMeehanorderedtheintrudertoleave,sayinghecouldnotbeginMasstillhe hadgone.Themanrefused.Then thepriesttoldthementocarrythe agentout."ButIlayaheavy_charge onyounottoinjurehiminanyway." Thiswasdone,thedoorswerebolted, andtheMassbegun.WhenthesermontimecameFatimMeehanquenchedthecandles,turnedtothepeople, andinvokedaheavycurseonthe, soupers.Whetherthecursewaseffectiveornot,itisawell-knownfact thatthedescendantsofthesoupers havenotprospered.
DuringtheFamine,whenononeoccasionFatherMeehanhadgivenaway hislastcoin,hemetthenextmorning adestitutewomanwhobeggedforhalfa-crown "Ihavenothingleft,"he replied."IhavegivenawayallI had."
"IIyourReverencewouldputyour handinyourpocket,maybeyou'dfind ahalf-crowninit."Tosatisfyherbe didso,andtohissurprisedrewout twohalf-crowns.Whenhereturned homehetoldwhathadhappenedto afriendwhowasstayingwithhim, sayingitwasindeedamiracle.
"Itwas,Isuppose,amiracle,"fipliedhisfriend."Butithasnotberm,. fitedme.Youtookmycoatandthe half-crownsinthepocketweremine."
Ifthisoccurrencecanhardlybeattributedtoasupernaturalcause,others tookplacethatrequiremorethana naturalexplanation.Whilestillcurate atKilrush,FatherMeehanwaswalkingwithsomefriendsinthestreetona FairDay.Averywildhorsewas theretobesold,andtheanimalwas jumpingaboutamongthepeople,to theimminentdangerofmany.
`Canyounotquiethim?"saidone ofhiscompanionstoFatherMeehan.
