Thecryofdistressisunfortunatelytoofrequentlyheardinthis country-young,fruitful,andblessedbyAlmightyGodwithan abundanceofriches.AustraliahasallthefavourswhichNature bestowsuponherprivilegedones,andamongthenationsshe shouldberankingasthemostprogressive,wealthy,andmostcontented.Thecontraryistheunhappyfact.Socialstrife,industrialheartburningsandimmoderateupsets,havebegottenresults thatto-dayareoccasionnggravepublicanxiety.Whattodoto easethetensioncommonthroughouttheCommonwealthisapro- blemforsolutionbyourpoliticians-StateandFederal.Unemploymenthascreatedanatmospherethatisnotatallacceptable tothepublicmind.Thevoiceofdistressisbecomingminatory, andisdemandingapublichearing.Theshadowofunemploymentisnottobeperfunctorilywaivedaside,andissteadilyassumingtheproportionsofaproblem.

Inthiscityweknowthattherearemanycasesofextreme poverty-genuinecasesofhiddenpovertythatshrinksfromshowingitself.Mothersandlittlechildrenareinneedofclothesand food,andaredependingentirelyonthecharityofneighboursor thegoodofficesoftheSocietyofSt.VincentdePaul-thatwonderfulbodyofcharitableworkerswho,almonersforChrist,give uptheirleisurehourstosearchingoutthosehiddencasesofpovertyandministerigtothepoorandneedy.Compassionandcharityhavemadethemthefriendsoftheindigentofeveryraceand creed.Fromtheirslenderresourcestheyarestrivingtomeetthe pressingdemandsmadeupontheircharity,buttheyareunableto copewiththemanyclaimsthatappealtothem.Thishasbeen atryingwinterinmanyhomesandourbrothersofSt.Vincent andtheirsisterauxiliariesarenowinneedoffundstoaidtheir worksofmercy.Theirtreasuryisempty,theirwardrobesarede- pleted-whowillfillthem?Therearemanygenerouslydisposed i,ersonsinthecommunitywhocouldsparealittleoftheirgoodsto helpthepoor-andwhowoulddosoweretheSocietyofSt.Vincentbetterknown.Onbehalfofthebrothersofthischaritable association,weappealtoourprosperousfellowcitizensandreaders,togivealittleoftheircurrencyandsurplusgoodstoassist theirlessfortunate,nayverypoor,brethren.Thecupofcold watergivenintheNameoftheMastershallnotbeforgotten. ThegoodSt.VincentdePaulusedtosay"Thosewholovethe poorinthislifeshallhavenofearofdeath."

Thefootballteammadeitsdebut lastSundayafternoon,whentheteam journeyedtoClontarftofulfilamatch engagement`withthenippyteamfrom thejundirbranchoftheassociation. In1831,FrederickOzanam,thena youngman,28yearsold,arrivedin Paris,withhissoulapreytoreligious doubtsandstruggles.Passing,one day,beforetheChurchofSt.Etiennedu-Mont,hefeltimpelledtoenterit. Thechurchwasalmostemptyofpeople,but,devoutlykneelingbeforethe altaroftheBlessedVirginwasanold manabsorbedinprayer.Ozanam camenearand,tohisastonishment,recognisedinthatoldmantheillustriousAmpere,whowassayinghisbeads withgreatdevotion.Hewastouched atthesightandatoncekneltdown andweptandprayed.Allhisreligious doubtsvanished,andgaveroomtoan unshakeablefaith.Lateroninhis life,Ozanamwaswonttosay,"The beadsofAmperehadmorepowerover methanalltreatisesandlectures."

TAXICAREOFTOURTEETH.
Theliabilityoftheteethtodecay variesindifferentpersons,butitis seldomthateventheweakestteeth couldnotbesavedbycleanliness.The beginningofdecayinatoothconsists intheeatingoutofthelimeinthe enamelbylacticacid.Thisacidis theresultoffermentationofthe starchyfoodparticlesleftbetweenthe teethorbetweentheloosenedgumand theneckoftooth.
Inordertopreventitsformation, themouthshouldberinsedaftereach mealwithanantisepticwash.Asolutionofboraxinlukewarmwatermakes aserviceablemouthwash,andthere aremanyotherkinds.Butawordof cautionisnecessaryhere.Anastring- entmouth-wash,contrarytotheusual belief,isnotgoodforlong-continued use,foritmaycauseretractionofthe gumsandconsequentlooseningofthe teeth.
Theteethshouldbebrushedatleast twiceaday,andintheeveningsome dentrificehadbetterbeused.
Aftertheuseofanydentrificthe mouthshouldbethoroughlyrinsedin ordertoremoveallsolidparticlesfrom betweentheteethorbeneaththeedge ofthegums.Thecoarserfoodpar- ticlesshouldberemoved(inprivate) aftereachmealbymeansofaquillor woodentoothpick. Publicopinion,thoughnotmuchexpressed,wasdistinctlyagainsthim, butBrianwasnonethelessdashing forthat,although,despitethedevilmay-caregaietyhealmostalways showed,therewasoftenaveryloweringlookinthebrightblueeyeswhose expressioncouldchangewithsuch alarmingsuddenness.
Therewaslittleenoughdoubtin themindsoftheneighbours.Brian andDesmondCafferty,whoselittle holdingdowninthevalleywasoccupied,sinceDesmond'sdeath,bya red-hairedcousintwiceremoved,whom nooneliked,hadneverbeenfriends. Eventhedaysofboyhoodhadbeen markedbymanyadisagreementand pitchedbattle,theupshotofthose strugglesbeingthatthebalanceof powerwasheldprettyevenly,the boysbeingwellmatched.

Thetwoyoungfarmers,althoughthe rough-and-tumbleencountersoftheir boyishdayswereover,wereasuncongenialasever.Theycouldnotagree. Andsotheykeptasmuchapartas practicable.
Thentherecamethetragicepisode ofbright,buttoosimple,Mollie Darcy'swooing.Boththeyoungmen admiredher,andMollie,whowasan innocentflirt-innocent,sinceshehad nothoughtofdoingharmandnowish tohurt-couldnotmakeuphermind betweenthem.

Mollie'smurderer!Thepoisoned wordswenthomeallthemorekeenly forthefactthatthethoughthadbeen inisownmindfirst.AndMolliehad saidthitshewouldsoonerthrowherselfintheriverthanwedwithhim. Mollie,then,hadhatedhim,andMolliewasdead-foreverlosttohim.
And,ifhehadnotbeenholdingher handthen,shewouldhavebeenalive still;sheneednothavefallenintothe greedyriverandbeensweptawayfrom theminaninstantintheburstingof thegreatstorm.Yes,hewas,unintentionally,Mollie'smurderer.

WiththemostseriousrevoltinMexicosincethedaysofPorfirioDiaz crushedandtheFederalforcesincompletecontrolofthesituationeverywhere,theMexicanGovernmentnow appearstobereadytodiscussways andmeansofendingthereligiouscontroversywhichfornearlythreeyears hasdividedthenation,writesL.C. SpeersfromWashington,toaNew Yorkpaper.
Thequestionis,CanChurchand State,undersuchconditionsasnow exist,beharmonised?PresidentPortesGil,whilecarefultoletitbeknown thathesubscribestothepoliciesof Calles,wouldwelcome,manyofhis friendssay,theclearingofthereligiousskies.PrivatelyMexicansofprominencewilltellyouthatthisquestion mustbesettledbeforecompletepeace andtranquillityispossibleinMexico.

LeadersoftheChurch,notablyArchbishopLeopoldoRuiz,ofMichoacan, seniorBishopoftheMexicanEpiscopate,assertthatthequestionisnot beyondsettlementandthatadecision canbereachedwhichwillsatisfyboth sidesifthematterisapproachedin therightspirit.
"TheCatholicChurchinMexico," saidArchbishopRuiz,"asksnoprivilege,butasksonlythatonthe,basis ofanamicableseparationofChurch andStateitbepermittedtheliberty whichisindispensabletothewell-being andhappinessofMexico.
"ThereligiousconflictinMexico arisesfromnocausewhichcannotbe correctedbymenofsincerityand good-will."
ArchbishopRuiz,whoisnowinthe UnitedStates,anexilebecauseofhis refusaltosubscribetotheCallesregulations,hasforaquarterofacentury beenoneoftheleadingspokesmenof theCatholicChurchinMexico.His viewoftheexistingsituationcan thereforehesaidtobeatruepicture oftheMexicansituationasviewed throughtheeyesoftheChurch.

Evenrecentlythepresshasrevirted policeactivitieswhichseemonlytoo welltojustifythesefears.
"TherearewholeStates,:ikeTabascoandDurango,wherenotonepriest remains,orwhereanypriesthaving thetemeritytoremainisinconstant dreadofthelawuntilrecentlyenforcedagainstallpriests.
"Thechurchesareinthehandsof neighbourhoodcommitteesappointed bythecivilauthority.Insomeplaces, asinMonterey,thesecommitteesare knowntobehostiletotheCatholics andtotheCatholicChurch.Insome instancesthesecommitteeshaveneglectedthechurches,andithasbeen officiallyreportedthatarticlesofgreat valuehavedisappearedfromsomeof thechurches.Someofthechurches, liketheShrineoftheBlessedSacramentbesidetheMexicoCityCathedral,forlackofrepairsareindanger offallingintoruins.

InbothcampsthereareMexicansof influence,menandwomenwholove theircountry,whoaresincerely anxiousthattheexistingsituationbe clearedup,andwhatistrueofthese Mexicansisalsotrueofforeignfriends ofMexico;forinstance,Ambassador DwightF.Morrow,themostpopular andthemostinfluentialforeigndiplomataccreditedtheMexicanGovernment. Asisthecasewithallgreatques. tions,therearetwosidestothisMexicanproblem,thatofthegovernment andthatoftheChurch.Thegovernmentinsiststhatagreatmajorityof thepeopleapprovetheCalles\policies andareinsympathywiththereligious edictsof1926.
Furthermore,thegovernmentof Callesmaintained,andsodoestheexistingprovisionalgovernmentunder PresidentPortesGil,thatthelawsand theregulationsinthemselvesareno bartothefreeworshipofGod,that theonlytrouble,theonlybartocompletetranquillityasbetweenStateand Church,istheChurchitself.-
