of the Irish College in Rome, i'opp Leo XIII. selected him to accompan3 the late Cardinal to Sydney as confidential secretary, and not one of us but knows the great part he played as his Eminence's right-band man, both as private secretary, as Chancellor of the Archdiocese, and as administrator of St. Mary's Cathedral. From the day he landed in Australi -he is now in his 29th year of residence amongst us-he has been a tireless worker, and has contributed in no small degre' to Vie wonderful prorress of the archdiocese. In the building of St. Mary's he has laboured magnificently, both as organiser and superintendent of works. It sill be remembered that the last two great fairs of which the Cardinal and himself were the life and soul, and vlbich they endowed their fathomless energy, realised £32,000. RIGHT REV. MONSINOR O'HARAN Three Australasian Catholic Congresses have been held, and of the two that toot place in Sidney-the first and last-Monsignor O'Haran was one of the secretaries. In Irish national matters he has plan ed a, distinguished I art, too,

And the delegations of the Irish ?arilsmentary Party that have visited Australia in recent years to appeal on behalf of the Home Rule cause Lave found in him a tower of strength. He has placed himself entirely at the disposal of the envoys, and it was his masterly mapping out of tiv De lin-Donovan itinerary in 1906 that contributed so much to its s'ireess. lent institution has understood the duty that rests on every Catholic of opposing bad publications by good ones, and how earnestly it has hitherto striven to fulfil it. His Holiness has gladly taken cognisance of this report which has given him much consolation in the thought of all the good that must have been done to the minds and hearts of readers by the widespread diffusion of these good writings. Meanwhile the great excess of the bad press over the good which, especially in our own time, every honest heart must bitterly deplore, the negligence, the inerzia of good people compared with the activity displayed in this field, as in others, by the perverse, afford a painful proof of how true it is that the children of darkness are wiser in their generation than the children of light, and oh how this afflicts the heart of His Holiness and what painful anxiety it causes in his mind! The August Pontiff, therefore, availing himself of this occasion, while entrusting me with the office of communicating to you and all the members of this deser ing society his satisfaction for the good YOU have hitherto accomplished and what you Propose to do in the future, expressed also the wish that through ou efforts should le made to stimulate more and more in Catholics this most important duty and to bring home to all the truth that to close one's eyes in the face of the great destruction of souls which is being every day effected by the evil press is not conduct calculated to make
