ANOTEDIRISHMONASTERY.

AwriterintheLondon"Tablet" gavethefollowinginterestingaccountofavisittoMountMellarY, whichCanonSheehancalledthe "HillofIncense"inhispowerfulnovel,"TheTriumphofFailure":TheSeptember,afternionwasdrawingtoaclosewhen,afteralong day'sride,wereachedChaPPoquin, MountMelleray,County,Waterford. TheTrappistMonasterywasourdestination,andifweweretoreachit beforedarktherewasnotimefor delay.Fourmilesofmountainroad stilllaybeforeus,andweploughed ourmachinesbravelythroughthe ereasymudtherecentrainhad made.Whenweatlastreachedthe summitoureffortswereamplyrepaidbytheviewwefoundthere.A greatpartofdesolatelandstretched farawayfromustillitreached thefootofadistantmountainrange. Massesofdarkredheather,with hereandthereclumpsofgorsein fullbloom,coveredtheground,and onewhiteroadstretchedacross,losingitselfamongthemountains. Theskyhad.growndarkandlowering,andthrewadeepshadeoverthe landscape,makingitappear,utterly wildand,forsaken.Yettothemidst rifthisdesolatespot,with'itswretchedandseeminglyunreclaimable soil,therelayanoasisofsomefive hundredacres.Thislittleislandof fertility,whichonewouldimagineto havebeen by handsfromanrosperonsvalleyto thisbarren.reeion.istheworkofthe Tranpistmonks.'Earlyinthenine, teenth.centurythirtyIrishmonks weredrivenwithothersoftheirbrethrenoutofFrance.Banishedfrom thecountryoftheiradoption.their thoughtsturnedtotheirnativeland, enethitherthey,retracedtheirsteps. Forasmallsumofmoneythey enuehtletractofmountain,andthen eetabouttoestablishthemselvesin eecurity. Thewholemeritryside eerier,out'tomeetthemandrive *hemwelcome.Thenanovelsight wa.seen.White-cladmon"sarmed withseadeandcrowbar.beganto hoeanddigthe,ungrateful.oil.All theable-bodiedmenofthedistrict offeredtheirservices,endby,degrees comeimpressionwasmadeonthe mountain.Cropsgrew,stripsofpasturecoveredtheland.abeltoffir treesbegantoraisetheirheads;and asubstantialheildingreplacedthe ',norshelterthamonkshadatfirst elTANTINGOFTHEFRIARS.

Itwas.nightfallwhenwereached themonastery.Werangthebell, whichwasimmediatelyansweredby theguestBrother.Hebadeuswelcome.butheaskedusnoquestion whowewere,fromwhencewehad come,whitherwewerehound,only remarkingthatnodoubtwewere '-:angry.andthatsupperwasready. Wefollowedhimtothedining-room, andweresoonseated:italongtable eoveredwith,awhiteoilcloth.here theproduceofthemonasteryfarm waslaidbeforeusMountainmutton.freshmilk,yellowbutter,homemadebread.Nobutcher'sor1aker's "arteverfindsitswayu;'themountainstoMelleray; themonastery sippliesitsinmatesanditstomercleguests.Wewerehungry.after ittwenty-fourmileride,anddid ampleji.sticetothemonks'hospitablehoard.Wher.wehadfinished, theBrothertoldustheretriteBetteeictiOnatsixifwecaredteattend itWefollowedoutguide,wholeft usatthedoorofthechurch.The iildinewasplainintheextreme, withncpretensionstoarchitectural

beauty.Insideitwasdividedbya solidwoodenscreenwithanaltar oneithersideofacentraldoor.To thispartthepublicwereadmitted. Thechoir,whichlaybeyond,wasreservedforthemonks.TheOffice wasbeingchantedasweentered, andaswelistenedtothedullmonotonyofitskey,wefeltthatit wouldnotbethebeautyofthemusicthatwoulddistracttheattentionofthesingersfromthemeaning ofthewordstheysang.Benediction followedtheOffice,andwhenitwas overthemonksfiledoutwhilethe clocksstrucksevenandthebellstolled.Wethenwenttofindourright quarters,quaintlittlecells.where weweresoonlulledtosleepbythe rushingmountainwindcomingin throughtheopenwindows,theoily soundinthisutterlysilentspot. Nextmorningwewereepbetimes forwewantedtoseeallwecouldhe shownofthemonasteryandheon theroadagainbeforemidday.BrotherR.,ourfriendlyhostofthepreviousevening,againmetes,and gladlyansweredthemanyritesitions weaskedhimaboutthewayoflife atMehintMellaray.Besidestheir farmoccupationsandthestudies theeindulgein,themonkshavea largeboardingschoolwherethey serveasprofessorspreparingtheir PupilsforexamireatiOns.Thereis alsoadayschoolforpoorboys.Intothelatterwewent,andwewire struckbythecheerfulaspectofthe school-room.Threemonkswereengaged,inteaching.TheBrothertold ustosomrtothem,ashecould not.norcouldtheysneaktousuntilwehadfirstspokentothem.We wentire.tooneofthem,andhe stoppedhiswork,spoketoesofthe intelligenceoftheselittlemaintain boys,andmade,themsingforesan oldIrishlament.

RISEATTWOEVERYMORNING.

Wewerenowon'themountainrcad and,mountingour,bicycles,weleft themonasterybehindus.Nota livingcreaturewasinsightonall sidesofusextendedthedesolate waste.Itwashardtobelievethat neartous,outofsight,wasahive ofindustry,acentreofcultivation. Onandonwewentthroughthelonely'.wilderness,tillatlasttheroad begantodescend,andthen,lyingfar belowus,wesawinthedistancethe ::oldenvaleofTipperary.

Acorrespondentin"ThePublic Ledger".writes,underdateofAnguste Thereisonlyoneblackspotinthe wholeofIreland,andthatisBelfast,wheretheroughsofbothpartiesarebreakingeach'other'sheads ateveryopportunity.Lastweekthe troopswereouttostopariotat the,Queen'sIslandshipyards.

TheLordChief,,JusticefoundWaterfordin'excellentconditionand congratulatedfifeGrandJuryonthe Peacefulnessof'thecounty.Justice Kennyhadonlytwocasestotryin WaterfordCity.TheJudgescould notfindwittyterroreveninConnni.ght.JusticeGibsontoldthe MayoGrandJurythattheirduties wouldbelightandthatpeaceand orderreignedinthecounty.Leitrim,saidJusticeMadden,wasthe homeofpeace,andRoscommonwas "satisfactory,"andJusticeGibson declaredthatthefewcaseswhich camebeforehiminSligowere"of slightimportance."

In"rebelCork"JusticeBoydwas rleasedtonotethattherewasa greatdecreaseincrimesarisingfrom drunkenness,andthatinthewhole countytherewasnotasinglecrime againstproperty,whileattheother endoftheislar.dDerryCitywas 'fneefromorganizedcrime,from riotingandfromdrinizenness."

Londonisaboutthelastcityone wouldassociatewithasuccessful "Sacktotheland"movement(says the"IrishWeekly"),yetthefourth annualreportofthe'VacantLand CultivationSocietyindicatesthata fairmeasureofsuccesshasattended theeffortsofthisorganisationto bringthelandlessmanintocontact iththemanlesslandinthemetropolitadarea.Thesociety,whichis modelledonsimilarsocietiessuccessfullyatworkintheUnitedStates,wasfoundedinNogbyMr.JosephFels,thewell-knownlandreformer.Itseekstoobtaintheloin ofvacantlandfromitspresentowners,andletitrentfreetoneedy menandwomenonconditionthat theycultivateit.Inallthesociety nowcontrols6o,acresinthisway, anduponthis5ocumenandwomen arenowcultivating,plots,thushelpinctoprovideforabout2,soopersons.Another4;01personshave ss;liedforclots,andtoprovide

LastMonday,7thOctober,wasa red-letterdayattheClontarfOrphanage,asonthatdaytheannual sportswereheld.Astheplaceisso tarremovedfromtramandtrain, andconsequentlysoverydifficultof access,thenumberofourvisitors wasrathersmall.Howeverafew kindfriendsmanagedtoreachthe place,inspiteofthemanyhardshipsanddifficultiestobemetwith intheaccomplishmentofsuchatask. Itisprobablethathadthematter beenmadepublicafewdays previously,thenumberofourvisitorswouldhavebeenmuchlarger. Bethatasitmay,however,avery pleasantdaywasspent,andthe boysgaveverymanyexnibitionsof skillandagilitythatwouldhave donehonourtoolderandmoreexperiencedathletes.Theprincipal itemsconsistedofrunning,highjumping,thesack-races,theeggand spoonraces,thepotatoerace,the hurdlesandtheobstacleraces. Theselast'mentionedwereparticularly'interestingandamusing,asthe youthfulcompetitorshadtotryand wintheraceunderconsiderabledifficulties.Aftertheirstartoverthe course,theyhadfirsttothreada needle,thenfurtherontojumpover arevolvingbarrell,thentocraml underatarpauliniirmlvfixedinthe groundbythefourcorners,thento laceuoahoot.thentosigntheir na-ne,andfinally(hardestofall)to teeanappleoutofatubofwater withtheirteethwithoutusingtheir heads,'andatlastreach'thewinning-post.

Anothercomforttothetimidbelieverwasfoundinthis-thechief thingsthatreallymatteredinhuman knowledgerefusedtoenterthetests ofthephysicalandchemicallaboratoryatall.Wonderfulresearchhad beenmadeintothemanifestationsof lifeasshowninitschemical,physical,andelectricalconsequences collectedforthemandstrikingly commenteduponinhispresidential addressbyProfessorSchafer.But lifeitselfevadeddirectobservation. Sofar,physicsandchemistry(matter,hemeant),unaidedfrompreviouslife,hadfailedtoproduceeves thelowestformoflife.Mostscientistsheldithopelesstoexpectlife fromsuchorigin.

TheRoyalAgriculturalShow,held atClaremontduringtheweek,must hemostencouragingtothemanon theland,andmostinspiritingtoour Statesmenwhohavethefutureof thegreatWesternStateatheart.

ThisRoyalShowmaybetermed atruemirrorinwhichtheprosperityoftheStateisannuallyreflected. Thereflectionthisyearisindeeda goodone,itisclearandfulland welldefined,showingmanyevident signsofthebrightestharvestthat waseverreapedinthegoldenWest.

Idealweatherhasprevailed,people haveflockedfromeverycornerofthe landtothecityandsuburbs.and sincetheendoflastweekfarmers, merchants.andmanufacture'shave leftnothingundoneintheirefforts tohavetheirexhibitsappeartothe bestadvantage.

Theattendanceoneachdaywas faraheadofanythingrecordedin thepast;itisestimatedthatthe numberpresentonlastWednesday totalled-mom.

TheremarkablegrowthoftheHi herniateSocietyinScotlandwas amplyevidencedbythehugegatheringwhichtookplaceonSaturdayat Hamiltonsaysthe"CatholicTimes" ofSept.6th.TheannualScottish A.O.H.demonstrationisayearlyrecordofprogress,andSaturday'sassemblywaswellaheadofallprevious yearsinnumbersandenthusiasm. Aboutthirtyspecialtrainswererequisitionedfortheoccasion,while tramsandothermodesofconveyance werefullyavailedof.Thegathering inthefieldatSaffron'Hall,where themeetingwasheld,.musthavetotalledfilly3o,o0opeople.

Overonehundreddivisionsof.the societywererepresentedat.thegathering.Atthe,closeofthemeeting, thesewerema'-shelledintoprocessionalorderandmarchedthroughthe principalstreetsofthetown.There wasquitealargenumberofladiesin the,,processon.Forty-sixbandshelpedtoenliventheproCeedings,and specialattentionwasattractedby themartialmusicandpicturesque costumesoftheO'NeillPipersfrom Armagh.Thewholelineofroute wasthicklylinedwithpeople,who watched'patientlythepassageofthe longline,whichmusthaveextended forfullyamile.

THEMEETING.

Therewasnomistakingtheenthusiasmofthedensecrowdwhich4.3.theredaroundtheplatformtolisten tothespeeches.Theresolutionsexpressingloyaltytothe'BoardofErin andtctheFaithofSt.'Patrick,and unswervingconfidenceintheIrish Partywerepassedwithacclamation. Amongthoseontheplatformwere AldermanBoyle,M.P.,BailieO'Neill, M.P.,Bros.Dr.Fern:,T.McAuley, J.N.Doherty,D.o'Neill,ex-Bailie Loney,T.O'Connell,Holland,Donohoe,Cunningham,etc.Bro.J.Bradleypresided.

AldermanBoyle,M.P.,inthe courseofarousingspeech,referred tothewonderfulprogressmadeby theAncientOrderofHibernians,in thefaceofallkindsofslanderand vilification,orratherbecauseofit.

Thesocietywaseverywhereactuated bythesamemotives-loveofcountryandChristiancharitytowards allmen.Itwasasocietywhichhad theapprovalofbothChurchand State.Romeitselfhaddeclaredthat itwasgoodfortheChurch,goodfor Catholics,andanorganisationto whichanyCatholicmightbelong. Effortshadbeenmadebyitsenemies in,Parliamentto,preventitfrombecominganapprovedsocietytinderthe InsuranceAct,hettheseeffortshad failed.

ReferringtotheHomeRuleBill, thespeakersaidthatitwould,by Christmas,havepassedthroughthe Houseof('omnaons,astheIrish charteroffreedomandemancipation.

Mr.J.H.Campbell,M.I'.,hadsaid inMidlothianthatifasecretballot oftheIrishpeopleweretakenthe majoritywouldhefoundadverseto HomeiRule.HechalloilgedMr. CampbelltocontestanyNationalist constituency.Ifhedidsohewould come'hackaverymuchwiserman. Mr.Boyleridiculedtheideaofan ITNterrebellion.Hedidnotthink thatanythingmoreharmfulthan non-gunswouldheusedinthecombat.However,hehadnotcome theretosayanoffensiveword againstanyIrishmainwhodiffered fromhiminreliKforand.politics.He helieved,thatthebettersenseoftheir fellow-countrymeninthenorth-east ofIreland'wouldeventuallyprevail. When.HomeRulehadpassedandan IrishParliament.haddemonstrated thattheirfearsofpersecutionwere groundless,thatnersecutionwasforeigntotheIrishnature,thenthey wouldrealisethatitwasbetterfor allIrishmentoheunitedandthat anythingdoneforthegreaterglory orrreiana'wesOdaddfethegreatnessoftheEmpire.
