Wecelebrateto-daytheFeastof OurHolyFather,St.AlphonsusLiguori,thefounderofourinstitute, thecongregationoftheMostHoly Redeemer.Few,brethren,veryfew saintshaveeIPProachednearer,in theirunaffectedhumilitytheperfect lifeofJesusChrist,thanSt.AlphonsusLiguori,ordemandmore rigorouslyintheirtreatmentthe severesimplicityoftheGospel. "LearnofMe,tobemeekandhumbleofheart,"saidourDivineMasterandModel,"andyoushallfind restforyoursouls."

Fromhistenderestyears,Alphonsussethimselftolearnthatlesson,andwhenwelookbackonthe nintyyearsofhissinlesslife,and thinkoverthemanycontroversieshe hadtowareagainsttheenemiesof religion,theirritatingtrialshehad toencopnter,thepainfulcalumnies towhichheandhisOrderwereso rudelysubjected,thelongtrainof Physicalmaladiesthatfollowedhim !ramthecradletothegrave"hen wethinkofallthesethingsandgaze intohiscountenance,toseewhat linestheyhavewrittenonhisvenerableface,wefindthereonlysweetness,meekness,andhumilit% and thatsweetsmileuponhislipswhich issofullofpain,andpity,and love.Oursaintwalkedinthisvale oftearsinthefootstepsofJesus Christ,withthecrossuponhis sitalders,andthoughthecross whichhecarriedwasheavierthan mostofusshalleverheaskedto bear.andthoughhecarrieditfora termefyears,overninty,thatvery fewofusarelikelytoreach,still thelessonofhislonglifemayhe summedupinthefamiliarwordsof :tealsChrist-"Forlovemakesall taineseasy.Takeupmyyokeupon:011.andlearnofmetohemeek andhumbleofheart,andyoushall findrestforyoursouls,termyyoke ,aeet,andmyburdenlight."

St.Alphonsuswas.aboveallother thongsthesaintofmercy.Hisspiriti.aiworks,hishundredvolumesmervellousmonumenttethewisdom, piety,andzealofoneman-all,all speakof,and.asitwere,breathe mercy.oursaintwasborninan areofextremespiritualharshness andausteritaJansenism,cruel,lamentable,thatmostlamentableof heresies,paintedGodasatyrant. stretchedtheconsciences'ofmenand women,asitwere.onarack,and madereligionatorture,andall,all thisunderthepretenceofextraordinaryzealforGodandGod'sglory. ThiswretchedheresyPrevented,exceetatveryrareintervals,menand womenfromapproachingtheSacramentsaftheChurch,andshutout avastsectionofChristiansfromthe hopeofheaven.

ButGod,whohaspromisedtobe withHisChetahalways-"Lo!Iam withyoualldays,eventothecon.summationoftheworld,"andthe wholeofthatChurch,inallthe criticalmomentsofitsexistence, provesthatHeheskeptHispromisefaithfully-raisedup,inHisown pro,identialway,asHeraisedtip theProphetsofoldintimesofspecialdanger,thissweetSt.elphonsustorestoretothetribunal'of Penance,thespiritofmercy,andif to-daythepoorpenitentfindsinthe eacredtribunalthekindlyzealand eentlepityoftheGoodShepherd, andthelarze,andloving,andtruly mercifulheartofthefatherofthe Prodigal,heowesitall,enderGod, tothelifeandthelife'sworkofSt. AlphonsusLiguori.

ST.ALPHONSUSASALAYMAN. Hewasbornonthe27thofSeptember,r6e6,atMariauella,theseat ofhisnoblefamily,outsidethecity ofNaples.Hisfatherwasacaptain inthenay.,andwaswhatmightbe callednowadaysagoodmanofthe world.Hismother,LadyAnnCatherineCavalceri,piousandprayerful.instructedAlplionsusinreligion,

andthesaintlovedthatmotherto theendofhislifewithanaltogether peculiarlove,andblessedhermemoryagainandagain,saying,"If therewasanythinggoodinmeasa child,ifIkeptawayfromsinand wickedness,Ioweit,under'God,to mygoodmother."Alphonsuswasa childnotonlyofPrecociousintellect,butofprecocioussanctityas well,andseemedtohaveacqpired, eveninhistenderestyears,thehabit ofprayer.Wehaveanadmirableobjectlessonofthesanctifyingpower ofprayerinhisboyhooddays.Th, incidentisrelatedforusbythewriterofhislife.TheFathersofthe Oratory,underwhosecareAlphonsuswasplacedatschool,wereaccustomedtotaketheirstudents, SundayafterSundayaftervespers, totheircounty',houseforrecreation. Now,ononeoccasiontheboysstartedagame,andalthoughAlphonsus

officesintheStateandshineinthat littlekingdomofNaples. Inhis16thyearhebecameaDoctorofLaws,andbeforehisloth, byhisindustryandability,hehad reachedtheverytopofhisprofession,andwasregardedasthemost successfulpractitionerattheNeapolitanBar.In1722hewentthrough theexercisesofaretreatatthe houseoftheLazarusFathers,and wassomuchimpressedbythegreat truthsoffaith,ashesawthemin thehouseofsolitudeandprayer, thathebeerntofeelthatthethings oftimewereunworthytobecomparedwiththethingsthatareeternal.Hecarriedoutofthatretreat anintensepersonalloveforJesusin theBlessedSacrament-theoneunfailingfriend,theunchangedandunchangeablefriend,inalltheworld throughouthislonglifeofover nintyyears.Suchwashisdevotion

Protestedthathedidnotknowhow toplayit,yetoutofcourtesyhe joinedinthegame.Fortunefavouredhim,andhewonthirtytimesin succession.Oneoftheoldesttoys, irritatedathissuccess,madeuseof anunbecomingobservation,andAlPhonsus,thoughonlyaboyoftwelve years,tiredwithholyindignatien, criedout,"WhatisthisShallGod beoffendedfirafewcents?"He threwdownthemoneywhichhehad wonuponthetableandleftthe company.Lateron,whenitwas timetoreturntothecity,theyseek Alphcnsus,andfindhimonhis kneesbeforeapictureoftheBlessed Virgin,hisfaceall'aglowandwrapt in'ecstasy.Brethren,hewasalready asaintb.themiraculouspowerof Prayer.

Intellectuallyfewmeninhisown, oranyothertime,couldbreaka lancewithAlphonsus.Hewasgifted withakeeninquisitiveandcomprehensivemind,andpossessedamarvellousmemory,whichseemedtobe astorehouseofuniversalknowledge. Brilliant,studiousandsuccessfulin allthebrancheshestudied,itwas the'dearestwishofhisfather's hearttoseehimreachthehighest

toJesus,intheSacramentofthe Altar,thatheneverpassedachurch withoutpayingavisittotheBlessedSacrament.Hecultivatedwith hisovnhandstherarestandfairest flowerstodecoratetheAltar,andin thehymnshecomposedinhonourof OurSaviourintheTabernacle,he tellsusthatheenviedtheveryflowersoftheAltar,theirprivilegeof beingdotandnightinthepresence ofHisSacramentalLord."If,"he usedtosaylateron,"ifIhaveleft theworldandturnedmybackupon itsvanities,ifIhavegivenmyself oGodinreligionandinthepriesthood,IoweitalltoJesusinthe Tabernacle."

Andnow,brethren,wecometothe Partingoftheways,tothepoint whenAlphonsusLiguorileftthePath oftheworld,andtookthepathto theSanctuary.Ohbrethren,itis trulyamazingonwhatapparent trifleshangs'ourimmortaldestiny. Ignatius,ayounganddistinguished officerintheSpanisharmy,withthe bloodoftheknightsofSpa'nburningin'hisveins,andwithoilthe fantastictalesofSpanishchivalry Blowinginhismind,iswoundedat theseigeofPamnalana,andbecomestheSoldierSaintofLoyola

andthefounderofthatmilitantOrder,intheChurchmilitant-theSocietyofJesus. Augustine,withhisgreatandrest-a lessheart,flungpantingintothe veryvortexofsensualpleasures,and tryingtoquenchhisinsatiablethirst forknowledgethatconsumedhim, inthepoetryandphilosophyofpaganGreeceandpaganRome,takes upthelifeofSt.Anthon'.-thefatherofthefathersofthedesert,and likeDavidofold,histearsforhis sinsbecomehisdrinkdayandnight, andisnowhonouredbytheChurch astherealpenitentsaintofhishistory..AndAlphonsus,thoughheneverfellfromthegraceofhisbaptismalinnocence,hadhisownmysteriouscallfromaworldthathad beguntoattracthimwithitsalluringvanities

Itisnotmypurposetodescribeat anylengththefamousincident,the greatlawsuitbetweentheGrand DukeofTuscanyandoneofthe mostpowerfulnoblesofthekingdom,inwhichAlphonsus,asthe leadinglawyerinNaples,tooksuch aprominentpart.Itwillsufficeto saythatourSaintmadeamistake, whichcausedhimtolosetheimportantcase,andwhichatthesame timeshowedhimthevanityofhumanfame.Itwas,however,brethren,amistakewhich,inthedesigns ofGod,wasmoregloriousthanvictory,andwhichgavetotheChurch oneofhergreatesttheologiansand mostillustriousSaintsandDoctors. Onleavingthecourtofjusticehe criedout,"Ahworld,IItnowthee now! Courts'oflawshallnever hearmepleadagain."Withthisresolutioninhisbreaet,hegavehimselfentirelytoGod.

PRIEST.

IntheworldAlphonsuswasthe modelofthelaity;nowhebecomes themodelPriestintheSanctuary. Itisyourprivilege,brethren,the laity,tofollowinthefootstepsof .TesusChrist,asdisciples,toimitate Hisvirtues,andgrowbytheforce ofthatimitationuntoHislikeness butthePriest,calledofGod,as Aaronwasintheoldland,andthe Apostlesinthenew,byaspecial graceofpredelection-thePriest,I say,issentforthfromtheSanctuary,astheApostlesfromtheSupperChamber,totaketheirplace andtobe"AlterChristi's,"another Christintheworld.

AttheAltar,intheconfessional, inthepulpit,inthelanesandallas andstreetsofthecity,inthebywaysofthecountry,atthebesideof, thesickanddyingandfever-stricken.t inthehouseorinthehospital-howeverharditmaybeforusamidst thepaganismwhichsurroundsushoweverunworthythemanhimself maybewhoassumesit,that,brethren,isliterallythegreatandtranscendentandawful,and,letmeadd, Christlike,privilegeoftheCatholic Priest.

AlphonsuswastheidealPriestin theSanctuary.Hisconfessional, thattruetouchstoneofsacerdotal zeal,wasalwayscrowdedwithpenitents,and,likeHisDivineMaster andModel,thepoorandtheilliterateandthelittlelambsoftheflock ofJesusChrist,werehisfriendsand favourites.InFatherAlphonsusLiguorithepoorlostsheepofthehouse ofIsraelfoundagoodshepherdand thereturningpenitentthefatherof theProdigal.

Asapreacher,thewordofGodon hislipswaslikeahammertobreal4 inpiecestherocksofsinandvice. Wehaveanincidentrecordedinhis lifeofwhatthepeoplethoughtof hiseloquence.Havingarrivedata churchwithhiscompanionsfora mission,thepeople,seeinghissickly appearance,hispatchedhabitandhis evidenthumilityasherodeona wretcheddonkey,tookhimtobethe cookofthepartyofmissionaries. Butoreeently.whenallenteredthe churchandAlphonsusmountedthe

ThefatherofSt.Alphonsuswas notmadeofsuchheroicclay.He opposedineverywayhis,son'svocation,andwhenhe Alphonsus steadfastinhisvocation,hecast himoffbyrefusingtoadmithimintohispresence.Thepainfulstruggleended,however,inaglorious victoryforAlphonsus.Onedayas thefatherofourSaintwaspassing achurchinwhichAlphonsuswas Preachingtoavastcongregation,he enteredthroughcuriosity,andwas sotouchedbytheeloquenoeofhis sonthat,goingroundtotheSacristyafterthesermon,hethrew himselfonhiskneesbeforeourSaint andcriedout,"Oh! myson,you havetaughtmeto-daytoknowand ItrustloveGod.InowthankGod athousandtimesforyourvocation tothePriesthood-thatholystate whereinItrustyouwillhethemeans underGodofleadingmanysoulsto 1,Paradise."

CONCLUSION.

IsaidthatfewSaintshaveapproachednearertheperfectlifeof JesusChristthanSt.Alphonsus Liguori.Hislife,likeourLord's, wasfullofsufferings,andlikehis DivineMaster'slife,too,thegreatestofhissufferingswasreservedfor itsclose.

One,ofthemostpatheticthingsof thePassion(ofOurLord)wasthat ProphecyfromthelipsofJesus ChristattheLastSupper. Alphonsus,bytheintriguesofa cleverandinsidiousenemawas made.tofeelthepainofthatabandonment,toseehisbelovedcongregation,thathelovedastheappleof hiseye,rentintwobyschism,to havehisfairnameInsulted,hispure charactercaluminated.andworstof all,likeSaintJosephCalasanctius, tohedeposedfromtheOrderwhich hefounded,bythehighestauthority onearth,theVicarofChrist,Pope Piusthe6th.

Thiswasthecrowningsorrowof hislifeitwasalso,brethren,his crowningglory,for'itrevealedtous theunderlyingprincipleofsanctityitsperfectself-denialandsupreme conformitytothewillofGod.

DIFFERENTFORMSTHATHAVE BEENUSEDATVARIOUS TIMES.

ProbablynineIrishmenoutoften, ifaskedwhatthenationalflagof Irelandis,wouldreplywithouthesitation,"Theharpwithoutthe crown,"meaningthegoldenCeltic harponagreen,ground,whichis flownsouniversallybyIrishpatriots.Mostofthembelievethatthis hasalwaysbeenIreland'sflag,but thefactisthat,asflagsgo,itis comparativelynew.

Itfirstmadeitsappearancein 1798,whenitwasadoptedbythe UnitedIrishmen,anditissaidthey chosegreenbecauseitisablendof orangeandblue,totypif'theunion ofnorthandsouth.

InpointofantiquitytherealIrish flagisthe"spearandserpent," whichappearsinthearmsofthe O'Sullivans.ItissaidtononmemoratetheincidentofGaodhalGlas, theancestorofMillesius,'who,traditionsays,wascuredofasnake bitebytherodofMoses.Nextto thatcomestheflagofFionnMacCumhall'smilitia,thegoldensunburstonabluegroundandthe weightofopinionseemstofavour thisasthetruenationalflag.Blue, indeed,wasalwaysIreland'snationalcolouruntil1798.

Thereareanumberofotherflags whichhavefiguredinIrishhistory, andallhavetheirenthusiasticsupporters.Oneofthemostpopularis thethreegoldencrownsonablue ground,whichfiguresnowinthe armsoftheprovinceofMunster.This wasacceptedaftertheNormaninvasionin1170astheflagofIreland, thethreecrownstypifyingthekingdomsofDesmond,Ormond,andThomond.Itwasretaineduntil1347, whenHenryVIII.abolisheditand substitutedtheharp.

Comingdowntomorerecenttimes, wefindthatGrattan'spatrioticParliamentdidnotrecognisegreen,althoughitdidaccepttheharp.Its flagwasagoldenharinonaFlue ground.

Anewflagwasevolvedatthetime oftheUnion,apparentlyfortheexpressiPurPoseofincorporatingitin whatisnowknownastheUnion Jack.Thiswasthe,redsaltireona whitegrouad,whichwaschristened "St,Patrick'sCross."Apparentlyit was"lifted"fromthearnieofTrinityCollege,Dublin,thoughhowTrinitycamebyitisequallyamysterv.

TheweightofinformedpublicopinionnowinIrelandisinfavourof theblueground,butisaboutequallydividedbetweenthebarnandthe sunburst.

Butlifehasitsseriousphase.Religionmusthaveitsplaceinit,and thereforemanmustseekreligious knowledge.Howmanymenandwomen,youngandold,amongstusseriouslydesirereligiousknowledge, andgivethemselvestoitsacquirement?YethowpoorInthought,in moralstrengthandguidance,andin virtueandtruenobilityofcharacter, menarewithoutit!Howneceasar%' itisteenablementofulfiltheir dutiestotheirCreator,totheir families,totheiremployersandemployees,totheirState,totheirfellow-men,andtothemselves,andto Pointoutthewaytofulfiltheir finaldestinyDomenstrivetobecomerichinreligiousknowledge? OnTuesdaymorningMr.Redmond paidavisittotheConventSchools. Inabriefintroductionofthedistinguishedvisitor,themanagerof theschools,the,Rev.MoreHallinan, tookoccasiontosaythattheideal theystrovetoattainwasthatwhich wastraditionalinIrelandsincethe faroffdayswhenshewasthe "IslandofSaintsandScholars."

Aseriesofmonthlyeuchreparties anddancesarebeingheldinaidof theCatholicBuildingFund.These littlegatheringsarebecomingmost fashionable,andeachsucceedingone isvotedbetterthantheother.The lastwasheldintheMechanics'InstituteonWednesday,Julyi7th,and Provedamostenjoyableevening. TheprizesweredonatedbyMessrs. D.Milligan,J.G.Smith,W.H. On'Mondayeveninglast,August 5th,atthePresbytery,theRev. Dr.O'Hurley,onbehalfoftheCatholicsofCoalgardie,presentedMr. Monaghan,whoisabouttoleavethe goldfieldstoenterintobusinessin Fremantle(havingtakenoverthe HotelOrient)withagoldsovereign case,andMrs.Monaghanwitha goldCelticCross,bothsuitably_ascribed.

TheRev.Father,in'makingthe presentation,saidhesincerelyregrettedthedepartureofMr.and Mrs.MonaghanfromCoolgardie,who hadalwassbeentothe.foreinhelpingalonaanymovementinconnectionwiththechurch,andhefelt surethattheirlosswouldbefeltnot onlybythechurch,'butlarthetown inwhichtheyhadbeenresidentsof solong.OnbehalfoftheCatholics ofCoolgardie,hehadgreatpleasure inmaking,thepresentation,andhe wishedthemeveryhaPpinessintheir newhome.

OnlastSundayweektheDistrict PresidentandofficersoftheHibernianSocietypaidanofficialvisit tothelocalbranch.Quiteanumber ofmattersofimportancetothesocietywerediscussedatthemeeting, andasaresultoftheenthusiasm displayedweexpectquiteanonwardmovementintheYidiand branch.CharlesLouisllermann,of Smith'sMill,wasproposedasa member,andtwonewmembers(M. BolgerandB.Gorey)wereinstalled asbenefitmembers..FatherMorris extendedaverycordialwelcometo thevisitingofficers,andcongratulatedthesocietyonthehonourof havingsecuredHisLordshipDr. Cluneasanhonorarymember,and FatherLynchasPresident.Father Lynch'suntiringenergyandshrewd diplomacywere,hesaid,recognised throughoutthedioceseandbrought successtoeveryworkwithwhichhe hasbeenassociated.Heassuredthe societyofthedeepsympathyand heartyco-operationofhimsolfand hisyoungandenergeticassistant. Hespokeearnestlyoftheneedand opportunityofformingajuvenile branchofthesocietyinMidland, andassuredthesocietythatinthe eventofsuchastepbeingtaken,if itdidnotmeetwiththesuccessit deserved,thefaultwouldnotrest withthelocalclergy.Followingthe wisemottoof"strikingtheiron whileitishot,"Mr.Suganproposed,andMr.Gibbsseconded,Father Morrisasanhonorarymember,subjecttohisassent,whichwasfreely andpromptlygiven.
