Married couples hold your heads high – you are the “powerhouse of the Church” to bring about what the late Pope John Paul II called The New Evangelisation to renew the face of the earth. That was the key message behind the keynote address given by Byron and Francine Pirola, founders of marriage enrichment program Celebrate Love, at the “Celebrate: Life, Family, Journey” conference at Riverton parish last weekend. The Pirolas, who have been married for 17 years and have worked in marriage enrichment for over 12 years and in natural family planning for 10 years, said it is about

Call issued on Feast of great traditional prayer ■ By John Thavis
VATICAN CITY (CNS) - Pope Benedict XVI urged Catholics to pray the Rosary for peace in the world. Speaking to pilgrims on October 7, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Pope recalled that Marian apparitions at Fatima, Portugal, 90 years ago underlined the need to pray for the end of World War I. “We too want to welcome the maternal request of the Virgin, committing ourselves to reciting the Rosary with faith for peace in families, among nations and throughout the world,” he told several thousand people in St Peter’s Square. The Pope, noting that October was dedicated in a special way to evangelisation, said the Rosary can stimulate missionary action by leading Christians to meditate on the life of Jesus.

time married people were recognised as the “powerhouse of the Church” that they are by the very nature of the sacrament they share – marriage. Gone are the days when the Church’s missionary work consisted of priests, Brothers and nuns venturing out into ‘primitive territory’ – the territory is right here, in our midst. In Australia. There is a new phenomenon emerging in our modern world which John Paul II spoke of, they said: re-evangelising the baptised.

APPEARANCES CAN BE DECEPTIVE. On a beautiful spring day, Western Australian native wildflowers blossom in the mid-morning sun. But they can be hard to see from your car - you’ve got to get out and walk a few metres into the bush to find them all. There are so many out that The Record didn’t have enough space to print pictures of
all the different kinds that can be seen, so we chose some of the best. The hills are alive with colour at the moment and well worth the effort of a weekend leisurely drive and a short walk from the roadside to see the astonishing variety of kind and colour that greet the viewer. Tip: try Mills Rd or Chevin Rd in Roleystone. More: VISTA 1
