JANUARY INDULGENCE

After a long journey, Perth man Peter Porteous was ordained a Servite priest by Bishop Donald Sproxton. It was a moment of great joy for all concerned.

When it came to celebrating the Feast of the Birth of the Saviour of the World, Rockingham parish and Catholic school joined forces.

As part of the special Year of St Paul called by Pope Benedict, Catholics in Perth can receive an indulgence on January 25. Don’t miss out!

VATICAN CITY (CNS) Christ’s resurrection is not a myth or fairy tale; it is the one and only event that has destroyed the root of evil and can fill the emptiness in people’s hearts, Pope Benedict XVI said in his Easter message. But Christ still wants humanity to help affirm his victory by using his weapons of justice, truth, mercy and love to end the suffering in Africa, build peace in the Holy Land, and combat hunger and poverty worldwide, he said on April 12 in his message “urbi et orbi” (to the city and the world). “Africa suffers dispropor-

THE GIFT OF MONSIGNOR HAWES

Geraldton keeps millennial time

The relentless message from the media and contemporary culture is that Christianity is irrelevant, repressive, selfrighteous and seeks to impose its harsh beliefs wherever it can. Nevertheless, this year across WA and further afield around the world, Christians embraced the true meaning of their faith by gathering to celebrate with hope and joy the sacrifice of Christ - and the overwhelming truth of his resurrection. As they did, they marked their celebrations with variety and unique contributions from national background, spirituality and locale.

arish churches were packed repeatedly as Catholics flocked to the major Easter liturgies over the four days from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday. The crowds included 150 people who entered the Catholic Church through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults at the Easter Vigil on Saturday night and an unknown number of others who were baptised Catholics as infants but who had not subsequently received other Sacraments such as Reconciliation, Confirmation, and Holy Communion. The celebrations began in the familiar atmosphere of suppressed excitement at the Mass of the Last Supper, recalling the occasion when Jesus instituted the Blessed Eucharist and washed his Apostles’ feet as a sign of their priesthood. The evening ended with the stripping of the altar and, in many churches, a period of adoration of the Eucharist in the altar of repose. Good Friday saw a variety of formats for the Stations of the Cross. Continued - Page 3

ALKING to Chris Cypher in the grounds of the Catholic Education Office in Leederville where he is a gardener I find myself in the presence of an ordinary man with an extraordinary gift. Early this year he self-published a book of his poetry, The Gardener’s Prayer – A Journey into the mysteries of the Natural World. The collection of poems celebrates the beauty of nature whilst never forgetting the Creator. As Mr Cypher puts it, “Nature reflects God’s presence in our lives.” Born in England in 1944, Chris Cypher moved to America at the end of World War II with his parents. The family spent 18 months there. They then came to Australia where Mr Cypher has lived ever since. Part of Mr Cypher’s secondary education was at the Christian Brothers College where his best subject was English. At the age of 15 he started working. He served in the Citizens Military Forces from 17 to 24 years of age. On completing an apprenticeship in Machine Composing, he worked in the graphic arts and newspaper industry for 28 years. After that he studied horticulture at a technical college. At the same time he ran his own gardening maintenance company until 1994. For the last 15 years he has been Please turn to Page 2

An initial print run of 100 copies was quickly sold out among colleagues at the CEO and he is now planning a second modest print run for a wider audience. The news was announced by the Vatican last week and communicated in Australia by the Apostolic Nuncio (the Pope’s personal representative to the Australian people) in Canberra, Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto. Bishop Prowse succeeds Bishop Jeremiah Coffey who retired 18 months ago. Bishop Prowse, 55, was born in Melbourne. He is a former Vicar General of Melbourne and was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne in 2003. The Solemn Mass and Liturgical Reception of Bishop Prowse will take place at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sale, at 2pm on Wednesday, July 15.

Obvious but little practised? Fathers are of vital importance to raising children, says Archbishop Barry Hickey.

AS the Year for Priests called by Pope Benedict commences, the Pope has imparted an Apostolic Blessing to Australians who participate in the third Knights of the Southern Cross National Prayer Crusade for Vocations, which will take place from September 6 to November 28. In his blessing, the Holy Father acknowledges the commitment of the Australian national laymen’s body “to the Church and the ministry of the priests.” The Prayer Crusade aims to pray for an increase in all vocations, but especially more priests and deacons - and for muchneeded military chaplains for the Australian Defence Force, whose Catholic members and their fami Please turn to Page 4

Stable families and committed fathers are society’s best defence against crime and violence, and a great many other ills as well, Archbishop Barry Hickey said last week. “Tougher laws and more prison sentences might have their place, but if we want to understand why our society has become so violent we must look at the state of marriage and family,” he said. “In 1993, when there was great concern Continued - Page 2

AMONG those backing Pope Benedict on AIDS and condoms is the head of Harvard University’s AIDS Prevention Research Centre. But will you see it reported in the media here in WA? At the root of recent controversies is a a fundamental media failure to report what is really happening or to comprehend what Pope Benedict actually stands for, and why - hence the concerted, and now open, campaign to bring him down. Images tell in ways words can’t how - and why - people should give during this Lent for the greater needs of the human family around the world.

THE little fellow at the centre of this photograph, pictured at left, probably didn’t suspect he would be helping communicate the message in Australia of the need for global solidarity. But the images taken by students from the University of Notre Dame’s Fremantle campus during an immersion trip jointly organised by the Australian Catholic Church’s aid and development agency Caritas, and the University of Notre Dame Australia, inspired their takers to do just that. Together with seven other staff and students, University of Notre Dame second year medical student Elizabeth Connor travelled to India in November and December last year to see firsthand how Project Compassion helps local communities to build their future. Project Compassion is the Church’s annual appeal throughout the season of Lent in Australia to raise funds for much-needed aid and development work, both within Australia and abroad. One unexpected result from the trip was a photographic exhibition, currently showing at UNDA’s School of Arts and Sciences, which opened as The Record went to press at Notre Dame’s Fremantle campus on March 24. Meanwhile, Ms Connor shared her impressions of the trip at the launch of Project Compassion in WA at Parliament House on March 11. An edited version of Ms Connor’s talk together with some of the photos from the exhibition can be found on page 6
